One of my favorite 4chan moments was when a high school student posted pictures of all the guns he was going to take in the next morning, and 4chan pulled the exif data from the photos and called the police. When he got off the bus, he was met by several police officers and arrested. He later posted back on 4chan to criticize them for snitching, thinking that they would think his school shooting would be hilarious. 4chan just replied that him get caught and arrested was funnier.

A week after we declared victory in the Persian Gulf War people started showing up to local banks with yellow ribbons, the ones people wear to support the troops, asking for 20 bucks. There was much confusion. Some people actually got their money, other banks thought it must not apply to their location, etc.

4chan is sometimes toxic, chaotic and plain disgusting. On /pol/ you get idiots demanding someone's head get bashed in and below that you might get a thread with a news report link and a discussion about inconsistencies in the story, comparisons with other news sources from different countries and political viewpoints of the same event, just people trying to figure out the truth of a story. And the next thread is a flat earther trolling everyone.
4chan isn’t just incels living in mom's basement, though quite a few parts of 4chan are dominated by those. You get people from all countries, social positions and political viewpoints sharing their opinion there.
I despise /b/ because of all the p*rn there, but seeing all sorts of political views and news on 4chan can really open your eyes to all sorts of alternate viewpoints. I don’t usually share the radical ones, but knowing they exist and what other people think is a step above what most media sources are willing to give people.
Were you aware of the russian smear campaign against zhelensky the day before the war in ukraine started, when some media reported he was supposedly buying real estate in other countries? It was pure fiction meant to discredit him. I know because of 4chan, because smart people from all over check such news and give feedback, not just hateful shitposters trying to insult someone.
It is also a reality check for the delusional. Go ahead and post your wildest delusions, there are lots of delusionial idiots on 4chan. People will laugh at you and they will definitely give you that reality check you need.

    1. OP, theoretically asked about the best way to get rid of dead body in high-rise apartment. Thread ended with conclusion to just drop the body out a window at night. In couple days there were another thread about body found near apartment complex and OP caught by police.
    2. OP start discussing murder without being caught. Eventually users agreed that crossbow shot from rent car window is ideal. Couple days later there was a news about man killed from crossbow on a driveway. Killer didn't get caught.
    3. My favorite: OP asked advice about robbing electronics store at night. He was advised about mask, leaving cellphone and using plastic bags to get rid of footprints. Later security footage appears on the news of him robbing the store. This idiot forgot pliers to cut security cords, so he was able to stole couple laptops and phones. The best part - he lost his ID at the crime scene and was caught in the couple hours.

The kind of thing that usually higher thought catches and stops, and that you immediately regret if you actually follow up on the impulse. Like "Cat is allowing me to pet and pick it up, and there's a bin right there. I bet it could get out on its own anyway." Nope.
That her response wasn't "That was a stupid impulse and I'm horrified to find that the cat was actually trapped for hours," but instead "it was only a cat" shows that she still didn't have a a problem dumping a living thing, someone's pet usually cared for like a pseudo-family member, into a garbage bin that would likely be dumped in a garbage truck and potentially compacted. "It was only a cat" implies a valuation somewhere closer to dumping a neighbor's cheap ugly lawn ornament into the trash.
