ChatGPT: The Screenwriting Partner You Never Knew You Needed
As a screenwriter, I've always found the process of coming up with new ideas and fleshing out characters to be both exhilarating and challenging. However, I recently discovered a new tool that has made the process even more enjoyable: ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is a large language model developed by OpenAI that can generate human-like text. I stumbled upon it while searching for writing prompts and decided to give it a try as a writing partner. I was blown away by the results.
One of the first things I did was to ask ChatGPT to come up with an original logline for a romantic comedy. In a matter of seconds, it gave me a logline that was not only creative but also perfectly in line with the style of the romantic comedy I had in mind. From there, I asked ChatGPT to come up with a list of 20 female first names taken from previous romantic comedies, and it produced a comprehensive list that I could use as inspiration for my characters.
I also decided to use ChatGPT to help me with Dan Harmon's story circle, a storytelling technique that I had been wanting to try. ChatGPT helped me come up with 8 beats of drama that took my story from beginning to end, providing me with a clear structure for my screenplay.
But ChatGPT's capabilities don't stop there. I also used it to write an extremely detailed treatment for my romantic comedy and a shotlist ready for filming. It was amazing to see how ChatGPT was able to take my ideas and turn them into a fully fleshed out story.
In conclusion, ChatGPT has proven to be an invaluable tool for me as a screenwriter. It's not only helped me with the creative process but also saves me time by doing the heavy lifting of organizing and outlining my ideas. I highly recommend ChatGPT to any screenwriter looking for a writing partner that can help them take their ideas to the next level.

Very interesting take on it, Knifes.
I was writing a script with the assistance of ChatGPT before I came across your video. I started a new one after watching. Not because the first try was terrible, but it wasn't well structured.
You can actually ask ChatGPT to write a scene for you and it absolutely delivers it in the right format. If it forgets you just can request to write it again in filmscript format and it does.
Another interesting thing I discovered was the following:
I let ChatGPT write a scene. Once it's written (a minute or so later) I tell the program "You are a experienced critic. Please give the scene you just wrote a harsh critic".
Usually it comes with some points of improvement. For example it suggests adding more subtext, complexity and movement to a scene to make it less static.
You then can ask if it can rewrite the scene with all that in mind and it does.
This brings me to a little bit of a frustrating point.
While this is all very good, the rewrite of the scene will in most cases be very different. It leaves out all the things you liked about the first version and adds other things that are good as well.
You then can request to change some parts back as they were, but then comes the moment were you recognize that you are talking to a machine. Because at some point it forgets things, misunderstands things and you can end up with a mess.
I think the best way to write the scenes is to just let ChatGPT critic them. Then you can adjust them just as you feel is right.
ChatGPT is a great collaborator. Not just because it never gets tired, lol.
If you know what kind of scene you need, but you have no inspiration, you just have to ask.
Let's say that you need a scene were one of your characters needs to have a dark secret that has to be revealed and you don't have the slightest clue what that secret should be, you just have to ask for suggestions.
Have fun with it!
Lol 😂 that's like when you translate a phrase with Google translate and back again several times and you get a crazy new phrase that's a complete different meaning.
It's not a problem if you can copy past the best parts and solve the puzzle yourself. You can't expect it to do all the work for you
01:09 📜 The first prompt involved asking the AI to generate a logline for a romantic comedy with two female characters, providing basic genre and character information.
02:01 📝 Different prompts can be used to refine details, such as changing character relationships (e.g., stepmothers instead of grandmothers) for a more tailored collaboration.
03:25 🎭 Utilizing the Dan Harmon story Circle prompt, the AI creates eight dramatic beats that form the story's structure, effectively providing a framework for the screenplay.
04:06 📃 The AI can generate an extremely detailed treatment for the movie, including a title ("Sugar and Spice"), providing a comprehensive overview of the story for pitching and planning.
04:48 🎬 While the AI can't create visual content, it can suggest scenes and shots for a shot list based on the treatment, aiding writer-directors in visualizing their scenes for filming.
Hi, I would add within the prompt "write a formatted screenplay about........" ChatGPT can almost format a screenplay in a screenplay format.
This is incredible! I’ve been trying to use ChatGPT to help me with a story idea I’ve been struggling with for the past 2 years, but I couldn’t come up with good enough prompts. Thank you for sharing all of these tricks. I would love to watch your movie someday. God bless!
Thats awesome! So glad this worked for you.
Engaging content man! Fascinating stuff! I think you doing a whole series on ChatGPT could be a great idea.
Thanks pal. Maybe I will. MAYBE I WILL.
Agreed!

Im using chat gpt as a writing partner for a novel. in one chapter i wrote a mystery box, not really knowing what it should be used for (other than to tackle the main problem of the story). after giving chatgpt a detailed description of my novel, it gave me several good ideas for what to use the mystery box for! some i had thought myself, but the one i am using is from chatgpt
Im using it the same Way, not all it writes is good itself but definetly gives several Good ideas to work with
This is awesome, haven't tried any AI software yet and have had writers block for decades, thank you. I think AI will as you said be a collaborator, rather than replace artists.
Thank you for making this. I collaborated with it last night after seeing your video on it. I thought is was cool how I could tell it to add to or change something in Scene 5 for example. Then it did it. Was great fun!
SWEET!
I wonder if U could use Michael Hauge's Hero's Journey? Cliff Pickover? Also, I love the style of Raymond Chandler. The radio plays like "Pat Novak for Hire". Filled with simile and Metaphor! "I knew Dud Muller. He was about as reliable as a stab in the back." Just chock full of zingers. :)
Dude this was massively helpful. Thanks a lot.
Heck yeah. Of course!
Pretty soon, we'll be able to input "which screenplays were written with help from ChatGPT?" and it will commence to give itself credit.
All Marvel movies 😀
If you already have a movie idea, just write a short summary in the prompt and ask chatgpt to create an outline based on the summary for you.
Mind BLOWN 🎉🎉🎉🎉 😮
Thank you for this tutorial.
I wanted a short form script as a long form ad for a customer.
This really helped!
How would you get complex dialogue from gpt it seems to always take the easiest least complex dialogue to progress the story forward
Maybe i don’t know….do some work on your own and come up with the dialogue like all the great screenwriters of films history that didn’t have an AI to assist them
@@BG_WingzzNo talent bastarrrrddds... Always looking for the easy way out !
If you need AI to write your scripts... You are not cut out to be a writer !
Hey this is awesome! I was wondering how I can use ChatGPT to expand my ideas into a screenplay framework. This helps a lot.
Yes!
the more detailed and work you have put into your novel or screenplay, the more easy it is to use chatgpt. i works excellent as teacher or writing partner
Can GPT or something like that stuff replace real screenwriters in the future? What is your opinion about it?@@TheKnivesMonroePodcast
It's a great collaborator if done right. It will write great character bios and give archetypes as well
Hey Buddy, I really needed this online tutor or help with putting my screenplay together. Your tutorial is spot on, I have one word "WOW". Thank's Bro you're the best. FREAKING UNBELIEVABLE
You're very welcome!
Thank you so much for the dan harmon prompt suggestion! And also for the treatment prompt suggestion. You just saved my saturday. :D
Are there other such "concepts" that you include into prompts regularly? :)
Great video. What if you already pretty much have the story, characters, etc mostly flushed out and you just want help with structure and finishing the screenplay? I am totally new to screenwriting as well as using any kind of AI. Do you put everything into the prompt and then ask it to convert it into screenplay? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
I never thought of doing this thank u. I have a script I wrote back in 2008 but got a lot of feedback because people felt it was too writer Director and not enough writer. So I’ll definitely be using this to try to convert it to the proper script set up.
I was triggered by the Kendrick poster but this video was before the beef so I’m still listening.
Haha
I've found that often asking it for a shot list doesn't quite give you enough shots for a scene so I ask it to "expand" whichever shot I want more of.
Case in point, ask it to generate a chase sequence and then a shot list for that and keep expanding the shots until you have enough to pick from.
Superb advice!!
@@TheKnivesMonroePodcast If only the generated dialogue were better. oof
Great tips. I’ve been extremely into in seeing how this is used for screenwriting
I understand that ChatGPT stores user provided information in their databases. Is there any concern that your screenplay ideas may be stolen?
only amateurs worry about their ideas being stolen
@@aydent1081
Only amateurs think that only amateurs worry about their ideas being stolen.
I’ve signed many NDA’s from jobs in pre production
Anyone trying to write a screenplay this way (i.e. have a robot make all of the big decisions for you) doesn't really have any ideas of their own to be stolen, so....
Super helpful! Had yet to think about integrating Dan Harmon's story circle.
really great content just subscribed. also army of one here. i think this has unlocked new horizons. honestly gpt and other generative AI tools is like a assistant the human still needs to be creative and logical. i think people who roast the human for lazy ness are not wanting to give it a try. honestly before i discovered chat gpt and generative AI i would spend 50 hrs a week learning many tools such as unreal engine, photoshop, etc and as one person enterprise , wanting to do animation, specifically tv production it seemed daunting. now pandora's box is open and i will produce my own animated content. good luck with your projects!👨💻🤖
Thanks pal! Keep us posted.
I tried this exactly accept I had a prompt asking it follow Blake Snyder s Save The Cat formula. It nailed it. Very scary actually. Now what?
Now write 200 scenes
@@TheKnivesMonroePodcastNo I mean philosophically and morally now what? Aren't we as writers opening Pandora's box and going down a road we can never intellectually return from? It feels... wrong .
Dude, your video inspired me so much. Thank you!!!!
I like the kind of videos that provide a time stamp list. Nice video though, educational.
I used it to write on a Disney Channel Show… 🤫 Can’t let my show runner know. It’s great but I need to learn better prompts so it can do a lot better so that I can have this do 90% of my work. Game changer 🙌🏾 what a time time to be alive!!!!!
It takes every structural prompt. Aristotle, syd field, the nutshell theory, trust all of it. Haven’t used harmony’s yet.
Btw, I think the structure of it all is the easy part, it’s writing the scenes and staying true to that structure which is insanely difficult for me. Something the ai can’t do. Do not fear ai, it’s amazing.
This is amazing but scary. I could never have imagined just a few years ago that these AIs could advance so rapidly, especially in creative areas. If this is what it can do now what about a few years from now; or a few decades? We will certainly be outdone by AI in creative areas and lose the ability soon to tell if we're communicating with a real person in many aspects of life. Eventually these AIs will be able to make a whole movie from text proms and do an artificial test audience screening, then automatically revise the movie until the audience test scores reach the desired level. Don't doubt it for this is just the opening Model T phase of this exciting but very disquieting technology.
I personally love it. All roads lead here. Wild right?
Actually the audience will be able to dial up a movie from a list of posters, pick the cast they want (Cate Blanchett and Tom Hardy in a romcom? Sure) and wait for the story to be generated.
I got it to break a story according to Save the Cat!. The beats (B Story, Fun n Games) just had arbitrary story events that didn't match their supposed function. Lol, it simply filled in the beat sheet with whatever. Still I've had fun with CGPT. It helped me interpret a dream, for example.
I don't use chatGPT for creating story because I don't like it's generated stories. Even chatGPT's story ideas aren't very good atleast for me . But I really like idea of shortlist prompts you mentioned. So thank you.
You’re welcome
Quiting my delivery job this year and returning to my life of glitz. I think chatgpt can be useful for developing some Japanese scripts when I experiment with the Japanese film biz.
Thank you. loved it
Thank you
this is amazing. thank you so much
I'm glad you shared this content, because before watching your video I've been playing around with chatgpt, seeing that I'm writing 3 screenplays simutaneously, one best on my novel series 528 page novel (1of5), so shrink wrapping or adapting novel into screeplay is not an easy task, however, the prompts are the key; Currently writing a Romantic comedy, Suspense thriller and Fantasy. Hope to see you soon. Keep it coming!
Thank you dude! Awesome!
It asked me to give it credit, but it’s an A.I. So I say no to the credit. I’ll be dead by the time we recognize A.I. as a Person.
That was awesome, Knives -- great post, thanks :)
That’s why I’m here. Thanks for watching :)
Thanks, it was really helpful!
just clicked on your channel out of random and holy shit you are amazing and keep up the great content!
Hey buddy, can you suggest the best to promote my screenplay to movie heavy weights or agents? Thank's
Using this bot for "assistance" is basically training it to replace you...
You had me at Dan Harmon beat ❤
Thank you, good stuff.
uh that logline is literally a script I wrote! [shakes fist]
That’s crazy!
Great video! So I am almost finished with a short I started years ago using the help from ChatGPT. I asked Chat to edit the script but it said it couldn't. Any ideas for me ? Thanks
My only comment is that my mind just exploded
It's creatively scary because we're gonna be competing with people who don't have good ideas because they get to take from every great that came before us using an AI system
What’s the command prompts for rewriting a synopsis or treatment?
Can GPT or something like that stuff replace real screenwriters in the future? What is your opinion about it?
Cool
Good research tool
Indie d. I can help you with black names if you need help because I am a black woman here we go Ebony, Diamond, Precious, Jazmine, Jasmine, Latavia, Ta'Keisha, La'quisha, Aaliyah, Shanae, and Samone. Black names for guys are Keiontae, Marques, Deshawn Tyrone, and Terrence, I am a writer but my characters are Hispanic so I would normally google Spanish names and of course I will have to then have my books and screenplays translated from English to Spanishand sell it to a foreign hispanic producer. But yeah I didn't know chat gpa gives you names thanks for sharing that. Oh, and good luck on your movies.
massive thanks
You’re welcome!!
I was debating about credit. Originally I thought co writer but I think at this point a sincere thanks to GPT would do. Suppose it depends how much you lean into or upon the technology. I mean we don't give final cut director credits 🤷
Can you use this to rewrite an existing scr?
i tried to create a synopsis for a script i wrote a few years ago, but when i put it (script) in chatgpt4 it says content is too long. Is there a way around this?
Have it write the outline/treatment or even the first 10 pages. Then the next 10 etc.
wow!
the grandmothers can be friends who had a bakery in the past
Not a bad idea actually
That is not the Dan Harmon method it used. Those are Hero's Journey beats. ChatGPT confuses these all the time.
If you use these AI software to write develop a screenplay, who owns the copyright??? See what Plotdot AI says in their user agreement....."This Agreement does not transfer to you any intellectual property owned by the Operator or third parties, and all rights, titles, and interests in and to such property will remain (as between the parties) solely with the Operator. All trademarks, service marks, graphics and logos used in connection with the Website and Services, are trademarks or registered trademarks of the Operator or its licensors." They say, they own the rights.......It could be a huge problem if true???
Are you a paid member of ChatGPT or use the free version? I'm wondering if there is a difference and you receive more robust replies with the paid version
Paid. What’s different is it doesn’t crash and I have unlimited searches and prompts.
Could I ever hire you to consult?
Knives@indiedarlings.net
Of course.
How much does it cost???
Loved ur video subscribed thu. Unfortunately chat gpt is banned in our area. Used vpn no help 😑. Is there any suggestions? Or substitute? Thank you

bro , you writing a romantic comedy for lesbians ?
haha.
This feels so wrong
Why?
So you said the word romantic and Chat GPT didn’t sensor you? Or Woman of color? Hahaha you got lucky, but watch out for the popo knocking your door soon
Dan Harmon's story circle isn't right. Look at Dan Harmon's ACTUAL story circle and it doesn't match up.
What do you mean
Yeah it's not the real circle. Nor is the app any good after midway. Even if it expands with details, it's still pointless fluff. It'll look like a story but it's a very basic boring story. You'll see. You gotta still work out the 2nd half (the hard part) on ur own still. Good for idea generation and mad libbing tho.
It's going to change our lives dramatically = goodbye to human screenwriters (or creative writers for that matter)
Can GPT or something like that stuff replace real screenwriters in the future? What is your opinion about it?
Indie darlings, I don't need Chat gpt for ideas. I have plenty that I have thought through and outlined. My problem is I dont have much free time. I would like to use chat gpt as an editor. I have completed a television pilot using Final Draft, and I have some questions that I hope you can answer for me.
1. Can I copy and paste my completed TV pilot in parts, from a pdf form into chat gpt and use prompts like, "please correct any spelling errors, proper use of parentheses, proper use of syntaxes, proper formatting for a professional pilot script etc"
Plus any other prompts like those.
Could I use chat gpt as a second editor with Final Draft being the first editor.
2. If the above scenario is doable, then how do I get chat gpts edited version of my tv pilot script back into Final Draft or into a pdf form for submitting and posting to the Hollywood types and contests.
This would save me the time I'm sorely needing.
Thanks for any help you can provide me.
Jeff
Will copyright and ownership be a problem in the future? Who owns the work?
I really hope that in the future there will be something that recognises ChatGpt and bans screenwriters like you from the scene forever. It's amazing how little effort you can put into being "creative" these days. There was no thought, no emotion behind this story, just pure AI.
That’s where you come in. You’re the human. This conquers writers block.
@@domehouse79 The good thing is that you are someone who will achieve nothing in life. Therefore I do not worry :)
