  • The importance of Almoguera in ancient times was very great, being justified by the strategic situation next to the Tagus river and on the way to the main enclaves in Alcarreño. Its name indicates an Islamic affiliation, having been under Muslim rule for several centuries. It was recovered for Castilla at the end of the 11th century by the troops of King Alfonso VI. The repopulation of the place was done around the existing one, reinforcing its walls and its rock castle.
This castle of Arab origin was partially destroyed in the mid-15th century, around the years 1445 or 1446, by the knight Ramírez de Guzmán, nicknamed "Carne de Cabra", who self-erected the master of Calatrava and forcibly became owner, de Zorita, Almoguera and other strong enclaves of the Order.
