Penguin. You've sone such a good job breaking this process down that you you've made it look easy. Thanks for the great content.
I am an old guy and I ran a lot of marathons with a group of (very, very slow) runners affectionately known as the "Penguins". I love your "build with what you got" resourcefulness.
haha that would be my running speed! Thanks for checking out the video, Mike!
Penguins are the most majestic of birds. Also nice chair!
Thank for being a supporter Sean!
Hi Eric, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Yours videos are amazing.
I watch a lot.
Thanks for watching eddy!
I upgraded my little shed with a 40A box and 4 20A breakers. It helped me a ton. Before I couldn't run the vac, fan and miter saw at the same time without blowing a breaker.
That apartment garage is still bigger than my shop. Mine is an 8x12 shed.
Penguin - I love your process and believe that you're giving confidence to a lot of people who might have thought they could never do anything like this, and they other projects you show on your channel.
This is a great project, I like how you detailed the build process and cool to include Miranda into the projects for power carving👍. I haven't tackled any furniture before as I've never really been that great with accuracy I still have all my fingers though so that's about the best I can hope for. Thanks for the content as always. Happy I stumbled across your channel
Thanks for the support, Josh!
I love that you do some pretty nice furniture with simple tools. Most videos make you think you need expensive equipment to do fine work.
Go back so some of my older videos. I’ve got a VERY limited toolset 😀
Penguin. Thanks for mentioning dowel pins. I just got a dowel making jig to connect a branch for my daughter’s bearded dragon enclosure. I’d cut it to fit in my oven to kill off any pests…and then wondered how I would ever properly align the holes 🤣
The results looks pretty cool. I like how you did the back rest.
Thank you! Cheers, Evan!
Penguin! I love how this turned out! I need to try power carving! And now I know I’m not alone, I throw all my scraps on the floor too! And I have been trying dowels more often too! Great video Eric!
You should! Thanks for checking out the video, Arpad!
That marking the pre-sanding with pencil is actually really good for how simple it is, I'd never considered it
Penguin!!! I really like your style of videos, you are inspirational for newbies like me!! Keep it up!
Glad you like them! Thanks for checking out the video, Luca!
Can’t wait to try power sculpting! Know I know what tools to use. Thanks for doing this video.
Sure thing! It’s a lot of fun
Penguin! I will definitely be attempting this build in the coming year once I get my kitchen table built. Love the overall design of the chair, but will use a different finish.
Thanks! You’ll have a fun time building it 😀
You had me at the intro transition!!!! LOL
I’m glad you liked that! I had try to something different 🤣
@@SpencleyDesignCo keep it up! It was magical… 😆
Believe it or not, you’re the first one to even notice it 🤷♂️
@@SpencleyDesignCo no way.
Penguin. Feel like I now can complete a modern chair project after avoiding to attempt it for years. Your alternative methods of joinery and minimum workspace is very inspiring to folks that have limited resources or work spaces.
You should definitely give it a try!
Penguin! (and pumpkins) great video. Thanks for sharing. Agreed on the result from the finish, clear might look nicer, but it still looks great.
penguin awesome as always Eric
Glad you think so! Thanks for checking out the video, Ron!
Nachos - That is straight from the 80s oak Era. Nice job though. Also, I totally agree with you about stain.
Penguin's rule, and so does this build. I love how you just get it done with what you have...though, you do have some good tools too. I'm impressed that your dowels lined up so well. I'm not that good so had to swap greens at Rockler:-)
It just takes a lot of patience with that jig 😀
Penguin 🐧 I cannot believe I’ve only just stumbled across your channel, it’s great !. I too have a small workshop and I’m attempting to put some of my projects up on RUclips, but I’m nowhere near your level of work. You have certainly gained me as a new subscriber😊
Oh i misst the part with "penguin" ! Great job , real nice
🐧I actually like the varying tones in the wood. And super cool that it’s old and reclaimed from a friend. It’s got a story! Look at any really old beautiful antique piece of furniture and you seeing different grain patterns and slightly different colors from piece to piece. Still beautiful! Also I really like Rubio’s Natural tint (not pure). It looks like unfinished white oak but with a sheen. Worth checking out!
Cheese. Hi, Eric. I so much enjoy your how-to videos because you show every step in the process, and despite your skills in design, you maintain a down-to-earth attitude. I especially enjoyed this video in which you followed up on the Instagram story. I'm glad you finally got reinstated. Good for you in giving a well-deserved salute to the sponsors who dropped you and did nothing to defend you. I think Instagram may have listened to them had they supported you. Anyway, I'm subscribed and look forward to more great videos.
Penguin, great work, Really like your videos
Thank you very much, Pancho!
Penguin, love your chair build. Keep building :)
Thanks so much, mikie!
Penguin - keep up the great videos and instructional content. Too many woodworkers have strayed away from actual building instructions in favor of sponsor-led tool reviews.
Penguin. Nice chair! I totally understand about the garage shop!!!
Thanks, Josh! It’s definitely not the dream setup, but it beats working in my apartment parking lot where this all started 😀
Oh man thank you for the reminder that I need to check out that hardwax! I've been meaning to try and find a new finish that doesn't take years to apply. Oh and also, Emperor Penguin. Do I get bonus points for putting my own spin on it? P.s. great looking chair!
You always get bonus points 🤣 I’ll be patiently waiting to see you do some template routing now
First time here, nice chair build comparing the domino to a simple dowel jig, love it. And yea little too white washed, but still looks nice.
Penguin. Love the chair! I wouldn't worry too much about the grain all matching up - it still looks great. Dowels are a great alternative for the Domino (it's nice but $$$$!!!). They make a strong joint but you need to make sure you line them up perfectly.
Awesome, thank you Erik! Dowels are definitely a little more finicky
Penguin! After watching the one video where you talk about your tongue being out while working I can't unsee it.
I’m telling you, if you start doing it your accuracy will skyrocket! 🤣
Penguin. Make more chairs. No one else does it on RUclips. Good niche for you. Well done video.
Thanks matt! They’re really hard 🤣
Penguin- You're Pengreat or Penguintastic haha. Thanks for the great video :)
Penguin! Another great video. Could I ask where you bought the metal frame for your assembly/outfeed table? It looks like it would work well for me but I haven’t found a video where you talk about it. Thanks!
Nice job on your chair build and video. Look up Curtis Buchanan on RUclips, he builds Windsor chairs, mostly by hand, he has excellent videos on carving the sculpted seats of his chairs. He works out of a small shop in his backyard. I think he only uses 2 power tools, a lathe and a bandsaw. Anyone that looks him up will fall in love with the man and his chairs.
Awesome
Thanks
Penguin. Nice build Eric! :)
Thanks for checking out the video, Lawrence!
“Penguin” down below 🐧. This is a really cool built. Great job
Thanks for checking out the video, Joshua!
Penguin great video keep them coming
I’ve got tons of videos lined up for the year 😀
Penguins are the masters of the universe! Well done sir.... and your girlfriend is much braver than I -- no freaking way will I ever power carve... one of the many reasons I splurged for a one finitity cnc router. Love the video editing and shooting... anyone that has never done it doesn't have a clue on the thought process that it takes (and time).
Penguins. Like the design and process. Liked how you controlled the carving. Good idea. The color isn’t as good as a natural, I think. The white downs out the grain too much. I also wonder about durability since it is a chair. Maybe watering down a little like you mentioned could avoid this. I’m interested in trying this someday. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching!
Why not use a router to get the bulk out from the seat and use the powercarver for the cupped edges.
So it is nice and flat in the middle with a nice curve to the sides
I’ll ask the question that everyone wants answered: what type of pizza do you have?
Very cool build!
Thanks, bill! The only correct choice is Tommy’s pizza
Hey Penguin. I understand the need for the G/F to get in some quality tool time with the power carving, but do you think the same effect for the seat could be made with a router and a straight bit and a round nose bit?
Yeah, when I saw the power carving I thought they'd be doing individual "cheek" divots. With a flat surface, a router and jig seems the better way to go
Penguin. I like your presentation, and I'm a fan of SketchUp. I like the templating methods, and your process is fairly elegant. Good use of space. I didn't like the white finish. White finishes end up looking dingy very quickly in daily use. I think it would have looked cleaner and warmer in a light golden or beige for the legs and stretchers, with a contrasting seat and back. Only a suggestion, and it kind of depends on what the rest of the room looks like, too. Interesting video, and I watched all the way to the end. I like to listen to folks describe their thinking and how the build unfolds is a story.
Thanks for watching David!
I would like a link for your miter fence on the tablesaw. I didn’t see it in the list.
Now that I see this video I think you should definitely get a CNC, I hope you already have it.
Penguin. Nice build.
Thanks, David!
Scrap oak - and cuts such a nice oak board...
My oak scraps are under 2x2x10cm :D
Explaining how you transferred the angles from the template to the actual board before you glued them together would be helpful.
Did you watch the whole video?
Penguin I remember very early on going to buy some wood and the timber yard man said "Wood is for burning. You want timber."
Ha! Penguin! Made me laugh.
Thanks for checking out the video, Daddy 😲
first off a lot wood works do because they love it. Im not a wood worker, what I do is because pretty easy.
What size/width bandsaw blade are you using for those cuts?
As Benedict Cumberbatch might say, "Nice Peng-wing, Spencley!" Look it up!
Penguin. Mmm, an all the way pizza sounds mighty good! I like the chair. One thing, if you used some of those fancy domino connectors to fasten the back and cross rails, this could be shipped as a flat pack economically. May be a way to make some money and expedite your resignation.
I've been eyeing those connectors! Good idea with the flat pack, however i'm personally not very interested in bulk producing pieces. I only do custom because of my short attention span 🤣 as soon as I finish one build, I don't have a lot of interest in doing it again
Penguin. I'm actually watching this on a smart tv, but opened the app on the phone just to comment.
penguin says i dont like the white finish either..but its still a cool chair
Yeah the finish was a bummer
What type of wood did you use for this chair?
Penguin 🐧: great build, man! I’ve wanted to make chairs and felt sooo intimidated by all the options and styles many have made on here.
For some reason, yours seems welcoming and less intimidating to me. Perhaps it’s just your style and video that make it that way. I don’t know, but whatever it may be, I’m buying the plans and having a stab at it. Thanks for that, man!
BTW you could double for The actor: Alexander Skarsgård 😉
Thanks for the kind words! I hope you enjoy the build!
Penguin great video
Thanks so much for watching all these videos Louis!
Penguin.
Couples who powercarve together stay together?
Any idea how well the power carving head would work on a battery grinder?
Thanks for watching, Andrew! I’ve never tried a battery powered grinder, but I’m sure it would work. Probably just chew through batteries really fast though
one way you can save on some amperage is take the impeller out for the 735. of course while using your dust collector. apparently it makes a difference in amperage draw. oh and also... penguin
I have to use the fan
@@SpencleyDesignCo I can understand that. I’ve seen videos where taking it out is essential with the use of a dust collector and also less noise even with the use of a dust collector 🤷♂️
I have a watt/amp meter I’m thinking about putting the fan back in and checking amperage with and without for myself
Nice!
One thing you can do to get around tripping the breaker is to invest in a large backup battery from ecoflow/bluetti/jackery etc. The larger ones output over 2kw constant and can output over 4.5kw for a few minutes. Anyway, if you plug the battery into your mains and then run your tools off the battery, it will act like buffer allowing your shop to exceed the breaker limit when it needs to.
How much does one of those cost?
@@SpencleyDesignCo $1500 on special, $2k normal price. Definitely not cheap, but they are portable so you can take it with you when you move.
Holy smokes! That’s a lot!
@@SpencleyDesignCo Yeah agreed. I know Ecoflow has sponsored woodworking YT channels before though, so maybe you could work something out.
Do you have any contacts I could reach out to?
Penguins like track saws!
Penguin finish: white tinted hard wax over ebonized wood. JK. As others have mentioned, love your “run what ya brung” approach to working with the tools you have. Not everybody will have a Domino so nice to show the doweling jig. Not everyone will have a Harvey miter gauge for their Ridgid table saw. Wait, what? I had to laugh when I saw that one.
Thanks for watching, Ian!
Is it a 15a breaker? couldn't you just put a 20a breaker in? That's what I use for my Dewalt planer and I've only tripped it once, but that's because I was taking off way too much.
IMO the back side of the seat should never curve upwards, but should always curve down. This to create a separation from potentially have your tailbones rubbing against the seat. This starts to hurt if one sitts for long periods. Maybe never an issue with this chair, I don't know but from experience chairs that don't have hole and just curve the seat to a back rest are the worst type.
Penguin - cool chair :-)
Thanks, Christian! I appreciate the support!
Penguin.
One chair done, at least three more to go to have a dining room set? 🤣
Looks good, but like you said the stain is a tad bit too strong.
Thanks for the continued support, matthys! I’m not going to make any more, this was just a fun project I wanted to try 😀
@@SpencleyDesignCo No worries.
It did look like a fun project. I could see you were having fun with it. In my opinion, those types of projects are the best. I find that if you enjoy doing something then it turns out great and a bit better than something you don't like doing.
Penguin Dude! You sure you have no formal training? You are a great presenter too.
Penguin. Nice real video.
Do you think a penguin would sit on that chair? I bet he would...
Penguins are cool.
nice chair penguin 🐧
Thanks for checking out the video!
How many hours would you estimate it took? The whole process..
I bet the seat took the longest part
Nice design!. But that seat still looks flat and uncomfortable.
Nachos. Oh, wait...that was a different video. Whatever. Made it to the end. Not a fan of the White either. I would have tinted it purple. 😂
Ahhh, the joys of 110V mains...
I’m not sure i would consider it joyful 😂
penguin... nice chair.
I really wish you best of luck man to quit your daily job and making this your permanent one.
Thank you very much, ayman!
Would a penguin ever consider making the matching chair sides without a template and router? No router table here.
You definitely could do it without a router table
Penguin!
Thanks for watching Edward!
What do you think of that delta bandsaw and where did you get the fence for it
Here the bandsaw fence: amzn.to/3gu29BI. As far as the bandsaw itself, it's decent. I wouldn't buy it again, but it's not bad enough that I feel the need to upgrade
@@SpencleyDesignCo Thank you for the link I can't believe Delta would put out a product missing obvious parts. I have many Delta products from 20 years ago which all came fully prepared I guess times have changed
They don’t make ‘em like the used to, that’s for sure 🤣
U Will make more money as a roofer
Penguin.:)
Thanks for watching it all andrew 😀
Scrap oak.... Nice problem to have
I got about 50 bdft donated from a family friend who was moving out of state :)
I don’t understand how people know what they’re watching with the titles 🙄
If your breakers trip when you’re running only a single tool you have a problem worthy of an electrician. Your lights should NEVER EVER EVER EVER be on the same circuit as your outlets. Solve this and you’ll solve your overall problem
They are on the same circuit
@@SpencleyDesignCo a new circuit is the best solution. Might as well pull 2
How?
He’s absolutely right. If your breaker pops while performing a less than safe task and you can’t see…super dangerous.
Penguin
Thanks for checking out the video, Jake!
So, penguin
Penguin 😂😂😂😂
This chair belongs in an art gallery. unfortunately, The finish is terrible. Just a simple teak oil would have looked so much better.
I agree the white finish looked terrible
I love your projects and construction methods, but honestly your clickbait titles and lack of anything beyond "RUclipsr personality/voice" is very offputting. What your doing right now is great for pulling in new people and views but I'm not sure its sustainable to keep around a core following. I don't think I'll be staying subscribed, but I'll check back occasionally because I believe you have potential to make a great channel. Penguin
Penguin Other that the key word to the left I really don't know what to say other than nice job. I'm not crazy about the white finish either but hey, you've gotta try everything once to see if you like it. Pssst Miranda is a whole lot better looking than you are, at least from my perspective. Keep the good stuff coming.
Were you trying to create the most imbalanced and uncomfortable chair or did that just kinda happen because you have no idea what you're doing?
Thanks for contacting Spencley Design Co! Our hours are 8am-5pm EST Monday-Friday. If you’re in need of assistance, please forward all concerns to customerservice@spencleydesignco.com
