The Vatican Dates back to the Roman Empire all these Popes throughout time have met many famous world leaders like Napoleon Bonaparte, Henry IV and many more, it was big before consisting of all of Rome and having San Marino inside its radius but when Italy was reunifying "Italy" they invaded the Vatican due to them refusing to any land grabs and soon the Vatican agreed on this small piece of land where the Pope would be able to stay.
You got one thing wrong the Papal States were fully annexed, it’s only in the 1920s that Italy gave the Holy See control over the Vatican to mend relations.
I have been to Vatican City in August 2022 and it was truly beautiful. It may be small but it has a gorgeous architecture. I accidentally left the Vatican after walking on the wrong road 😅.
