- Charles Guillemet is the Chief Technology Officer at Ledger and Ian Rogers is Chief Experience Officer at Ledger. In this interview, we discuss vulnerabilities and the foundations of secure Bitcoin wallet design, exploits and grey markets, secure silicon vs opensource, and building tools for the future of digital freedom.
“The code that is running inside it, we know this is our code, there is no way for you to run malicious code…if you buy any other hardware wallet you have no guarantee…if you don’t have a secure element then maybe it’s a genuine device, maybe not.”
- Charles Guillemet

Save yourself the first 20 minutes if you're not interested in hearing these two guys discuss all the concerts they've been to and their favorite music.
What music do you like sir?
Bro it's an entertainment podcast, not a business interview.
😂 🙏🏿
Music is the best 👌
@@dylan6091 don't read into the initial post. everything in it was factual. they took about 20 minutes to get thru music. I think OP was just mentioning that fact
„security should be by design“. Indeed, private keys and seeds should never be able to leave the device, unlike on Ledger devices. Losing customer data doesn‘t help either.
When I connect to ledger live with my ledger wallet and it tells me that there is an update. How do I know that it is a genuine update or not?
I think the guys are not consistent with their arguments. On the one hand they are claiming to have the most secured hardwallet and on the other hand they let slip value information and are now claiming that they have a more secure email provider. Trust me bro!
I don't back up my data, the NSA does that for me?
Ledger is garbage
I thought the thumbnail pic was Preston pysch and his wife 😂
I would love to see a simplified Ledger hardware wallet that was Bitcoin only, no Bluetooth, no Ledger Recover feature for a reduced attack surface. It could be called Ledger B Hardcore, disguised as a traditional USB hard drive that is extremely small smooth and narrow for easier transport, and it could be affordable. Basically a Ledger Nano S with Bitcoin only capability and no sharp edges.
They already have this.
It’s called Coldcard.
Or just buy a coldcard or passport or any of the non-shitcoin companies' wallet
I don't understand this ask, to be honest. the Ledger Nano S is exactly what you asked for. No bluetooth, Ledger Recover is opt-in, and you only need to install the bitcoin "app" and be done with it. That would render the device a "Bitcoin only" device.
Otherwise, as the others stated, another company's product may just be a better choice for you.
@@mattprezthat’s one big funny looking usb drive. Cold card is disguised as a calculator!
Hey Pete, I saw Run DMC and the BB in Brixton Academy in the late 80's kin awesome ;)
Thanks! Good talk!
YET another excellent program for the Hardcore Bitcoiner.
This was basically just an advertisement for coldcard, I can't even imagine sending money to Ledger 😂
Man take me back to skating in the 80’s ….. what a beautiful time of life that was …… skate or die
But a True ride or die skater wouldn’t do ordinals ….
Stay Humble.
Stack Sats….⚡️

Fantastic session. I feel a lot better about Ledger now than I did 2 hours ago. It also reminds me that I need to get serious about multi-device, multi-sig security....
I initially owned a Ledger. Didn’t like all their shenanigans. I’ve since switched to Blockstream Jade and couldn’t be happier.
Their defence of shitcoins tells you everything you need to know
I have, too. But the Ledger Boys are causing me to re-think. The secure element on Jade is software (open source) and access is managed through a PIN server hosted at Blockstream. If the PIN server is out of commission, can’t log in from a helper app like Specter or Green.
There are pluses and minuses for each solution. Pluses that I like about Jade are 1) Adam Back, 2) all the other stuff that Blockstream builds for enterprise solutions. If it’s not enterprise-grade security, no big company is gonna buy their stuff, including cold wallets.
Suddenly, Ledger seems to have the most secure Cold Wallet. From a a technical viewpoint can this be true?
At minute 55:00 we are just miracles to be born :) Great show guys! Loving the digital age at 62 years old.
Good show. Please do more on digital identity protected by the bitcoin blockchain. Consider Carlos Toriello of Simple Proof. They protect elections in Guatemala.
Great discussion, always enjoy hearing Charles and Ian.
Did Messi have an lost brother? Programmer at Ledger ?
Fool me once....
Just say NO to Ledger.
Some people are just very obviously the right people for a job
Only one question from me: when can i buy stax, been waiting for years..
End of July
Coming in August 2024
I trust NVK FULL STOP
One of the best episodes recently. Great dynamics between the two guests.
Wow, somehow I trust them even less after hearing their marketing guy try to sell it to me for 2 hours
Please avoid featuring these guests on your podcast again. They come across as overly conceited and self-impressed. Instead of discussing Bitcoin technology, they used the platform to market their product. Although you asked some hard questions, their responses were inadequate.
When the conversation shifted to shitcoins, they revealed themselves as not true Bitcoiners, even defending Ethereum, which was perplexing. Their defense of Ledger Recover is absurd, pretending that the potential transmission of private keys from the device is not an issue. They also downplayed the Ledger data leak as if it wasn't their fault.
They boast that their "dungeon" can break any other hardware wallet-please invite other manufacturers to respond to this claim.
Almost chuckled when I saw the title!
The coming digital dystopia by the guys who f*cked it up for you.
I love peter and WBD but I loathe ledger.
Someone said bitcoin was a Trojan horse. You digital prison loving guests just proved it!
Bitcoin Is A Trojan Horse .....For Freedom
Blonde guy speaks like a politician. Don’t trust him…
yeah. he tries to tell me what I should care about too much.
Why the Starbucks?
Honhonhon, I am French so I will wear black and white stripes on zee podcast.
Please no.....I really wanted to say that the room is so well curated that the only element that ruins it is that white stripes
All he needs is a beret and some face paint. 😂
First
If youre gonna have ledger reps on, only have other anti-ledger people on to discuss live
Graduation by Kanye West is the greatest album of all time
In first
"Jesus is a made up story". Pete, you will know the Truth someday soon, my brother. You would be better off having an open mind and seeking Him - Jesus Christ who gave His life for you.
The fact that these guys believe in shitcoins, tells me I should not use their product or take their advice on security.
Nostr is digital identify not Ethereum.
Cryptography is the future not cryptocurrency.
to be fair neither said that ethereum was digital id, nor that cryptocurrency was the future. they said that private key cryptography was the future of the human race, and that digital ownership allows for digital identity.
edit: and re eth they said that it's a trustable decentralized computer. which I also disagree with lol
