You are way wrong in the Luffy-Ussop deal. Ussop was in the wrong due to his own fears. After Sanji's kick, Luffy accepted but Ussop doubled down. Both Ussop in Water7 and Sanji on WCI are in the wrong, are betraying the Strawhats. Luffy may be more mature, but they are on the wrong.
Honestly, it's pretty easy to see why Luffy is always number one in popularity polls. Luffy is the kind of guy we all wish we had around us. Someone who will laugh with us, party with us, see us through our darkest times not even caring why and will march straight into hell with us. With the world as crazy as it is, don't we all wish we had a Luffy to help us, no questions asked?
Being around Luffy as a normal person is probably pretty hard actually. I think the real reason as mentioned above is that we admire him and wish we could live as simply and bravely follow our dreams with the same level of confidence as Luffy does
There are a lot of times where a main character made for children and teenagers can feel like cheap self-inserts or too edgy for adults. Luffy is not that. Heck, I'd even say that adults love Luffy way more than teenagers do. He has an emotional maturity that only an adult can truly appreciate. His moral compass somehow works perfectly for both normal and cynical people.
Oh man completely agree to this. It took me awhile to wind my head around liking the protagonist of a shounen like this the most compared to other characters, because too many times I've enjoyed a side character more, or the main character has felt like a self-insert, too "good", or too "perfect" per se. But though Luffy is simple minded he's not a simple character. And he's his own character as well instead of being a projection.
Oh my god. This is sooo true, in my teenage days I loved other characters more, but as an adult I just LOVE Luffy. He gives me soo much hope and happiness!
@@naluzoniro hello I think this is a fun thing to answer because we have to remember, those zombies had the shadows of people in them, and a lot of them...ended up being Lola's crew! Whomst Luffy befriended and made allies with! So even with a zombie tree and a unicorn, those were still probably the souls of people he made friends with haha 😂
@MelonTeee Goodness, I never thought to much on the detail that every zombie Moria had had another's soul in them... Thriller Bark is an arc that gives more and more the deeper you dive into it. I'm hoping MelonTeee Luffy Part 2 speaks on Luffy's soul in Oars and how cute the largest character we ever see in the series ends up acting. :D
One thing I noticed with Luffy not listening to people's pasts is that he usually doesn't listen if he's being told about someone's past by a different person rather than hearing it from the source. One exception is Brook, but Franky and Robin were directly relaying what Brook had told them himself and not just telling their own version of the story from their perception. Luffy doesn't like to hear about what someone has done or how they feel from an outside source, he only cares if he hears it directly from them. That's part of why in Water 7/Enies Lobby he was so determined to talk to Robin directly and hear the truth from her. It's part of why he doesn't give two shits about rumours and judges people based on his own interactions with them. He isn't interested in hearing about Nami's situation and feelings on the matter from anyone else but Nami.
Not only that, but he refuses to tell people how they should feel about him, all through fishman island people ask him if he's a bad guy, and he just says "I dunno you decide that for yourself"
This is true. People also ignore the fact that Luffy already had the cliff notes for both times. When they met, Nami told Luffy directly that she hated pirates because they killed someone important to her. She also talked about the money she needed and it was clear it was for something important. That's all he needed to know, all the other details about who Bellemere was, the regrets Nami had in regards to her and how Nami and Arlong made the deal. Those didn't matter, all that mattered was that Nami asked for help in the end. On Fish Man Island, Jinbei tries to tell him the story of Fisher Tiger, Otohime and the hatred between fishmen and humans, but Luffy knew the main points. He saw that hatred with his own eyes at the slave auction and he made his feelings on the subject very clear. Hancock also told him Fisher Tiger was a Fishman who rescued the slaves. Knowing all the complicated emotions pre and post that event wouldn't change what Fisher did. As for the queen, Shirahoshi made it clear she was there to visit a grave. He had already met her father and her brothers at that point so Otohime's existence and kindness wasn't a surprise given all that Luffy has witnessed. So, Jinbei's story about all the complexities behind the two approaches to the situation were irrelevant to Luffy because Hordi, the person of today, did not believe in either. I think if Jinbei had presented the story more from his perspective about why he was who and where he was, Luffy would have been more attentive. Luffy listened to Yamato's story, but he was also in a rush given the battle. Luffy didn't have time (nor did he want) to listen to an overly detailed story, especially when Otama already told him Ace had come to Wano.
Being a child is thinking Luffy hasnt grown since the beginning of the story. Being an Adult is seeing how much Luffy has changed in a short 2 years journey. And you are inspired to live the same way.
It's crazy too. In 2020 I came into this series super reluctantly. It took a couple close friends and family to convince me to give it a chance. One of the big things that added to my reluctance back thing was Luffy looked like someone I wouldn't enjoy, someone who seemingly never changed, idk where I got that in my head, but I can say after 4 years not only did Luffy change overtime, he helped change me, and I'm so glad I actually gave the series a chance.
@@MrRourk It's a shame that that scene hasn't been revealed yet. Personally, I think the person that Shanks is talking about is actually Blackbeard, not Luffy
That fact that Luffy manages a living embodiment and god of freedom and the world's liberator, a very human, fallible, and vulnerable character, and also just the silliest wackiest little guy who makes you smile to look at all at the same time is a fucking insane feat of writing. The character of all time.
Anyone with that amount of plot armour can be a symbol of freedom A symbol of freedom who ignores thousands of people and fishermen getting enslaved , thousands of women becoming s3x slave And the reason he can be the symbol of freedom is because he and his crew will be saved by the plot armour like his dad , revolutionary army or power up because of his fruit Doremon, Goku,Naruto , Asta Basically every main character free everyone This is not something new Berserk , jjk and aot presented this theme of freedom better as those series actually have stakes And you can see how our characters make difficult choices , choice to struggle instead of giving up to their evil side
There's a line from Arlong Park that's always stuck with me. He's fighting Arlong and flails a sword at him until Arlong knocks it out of his hands, commenting on how shit he is at it. Luffy responds with, and I'm paraphrasing here: L: "You're right. I can't swing a sword. I can't cook. I can't navigate. I can't even lie." A: "Then what can you do?" L: "I can kick your ass." This might sound like just a cool one-liner and it is, don't get me wrong, but I think it's also a really important part of what makes Luffy such a strong friend and leader. He is very aware of his faults as a person and instead of attempting to cover for his own weaknesses, he surrounds himself with people that he trusts with his life that can cover them. He puts complete faith in his crew and they, without fail, rise to the occasion. This happens all the time. Nami navigating them through insane weather conditions, Zoro vowing to never lose a fight again (we don't talk about Kuma, the Pacifista, or Kaido), Usopp learning to swallow his fear and step up to a challenge, Chopper saying "I only wanted to be human to make friends. Now I want to be a monster that can help Luffy." Hell, even Buggy helps Luffy in Impel Down after he just thought to himself he'd take his treasure mark and ditch him, just because Luffy believed so strongly that Buggy would help him. And whenever Luffy shows his pride in his crew, you can literally see them glow because of it. It's my favorite depiction of the power of friendship in fiction. When someone you care about, who has fought so hard for you in every arc, believes in you that much, you can't help but try to be the best you can be for them.
Mihawk says at marineford that Luffy is dangerous because he has the power to get people to follow him. People LOVE Luffy, they want to do everything in their power to help him achieve his dream
That line plus what he tells blueno at enies lobby about how he carries the burden as the captain to be the strongest he can be so those under his leadership that are weaker than him can achieve their own dreams and goals are exactly why I love Luffy.
The thing about Zoro not officially being the 1st mate (which I admit I hadn't noticed either!) is awesome. To me the Straw Hats have a very actually-anarchistic or at least flat-power-structure thing going on. They all trust each other to act independently or to step up when their area of expertise is in play. Even with Luffy, the Straw Hats have no hesitation in telling him off or punching him in the head if they think he's about to do something dumb, AND HE DOESN'T MIND!
But at the same time SHs often listen to him when Luffy isn't around. They know they can confide in him and that he will always have crew's well being in mind
@@bagonsoul I think the biggest example of it was when they split up in Dressrosa and how Sanji's group listened to Sanji showing the trust they had in the strongest of their members (in the group) and why Sanji leaving devastating them so much
Zoro was (literally) his first mate, he has the second highest bounty, and It's been mentioned he's VC multiple times from side characters so I guess that's why a lot of fans think he's always second in command. But it makes more sense, when you know Luffy's character, that any straw hat can be second command on the ship because their captain hates living under any laws/rules.
Luffy is such a fascinating character he's the dumbest character of the big shonen protagonists(like is there proof he knows how to read?) but arguably the smartest written. My captain, my pirate king, my learning disorder GOAT
He's absolutely read things in the environment. He even seemed to read over Robin's shoulder one time, I think, though it's not clear to me if he's just "interested" or if he understands.
I don’t think he’s a “stupid protagonist” in the way that Goku is. He’s way more emotionally intelligent than he lets on, creative enough to master “the most ridiculous power in the world,” and slowly his practical understanding of the world has grown to match. Learning the backstory of him, Ace, and Sabo reframed a lot of his behavior to me. He’s a goofball, dumb, and impulsive, but he’s not unaware. Going with the learning disorder analogy, leaning into other’s perception of him as The Idiot is how he chooses to cope, but as early as Arlong Park we’ve seen him take the funny mask off.
Honestly, Luffy is one of the most emotionally intelligent protagonists out there. And there's lots of examples: In Nami's case, at that time she resented pirates, if Luffy just invaded Arlong Park and knocked him down she could think it was just a stronger pirate fighting for a good navigator, but instead he allows her dictate the compass, and only acts when SHE asks for help. It shows her that he does care about HER. With Robin, he insists to save her, and when she says she has made up her mind he basically says "ok, you can choose that, but when you´re free to ponder your options. If there wasn't any of this, what would you really wish?" And with Sanji... He knows damn well our favourite cook has self-desctructive/sacrificial tendencies, so he basically puts the weight of his dream on his shoulders, as saying "ok, if you're gonna give up on your dream so do I, without you I won't be the king of pirates". It shows Sanji that he and his dreams matter, more than positive outcomes of his sacrifice.
Totally agree. One instance where shows his emotional intelligence outside his crew is when he first refuses to work with Momonosuke and the samurai. This wasn’t because he didn’t care about their plight, but recognized that Momonosuke, the prince of Wano, was letting his vassals do all the work for him and not contributing even though he wants to defeat Kaido and avenge his father. So, he basically encourages the young prince to take care by having him ask for his help, to help the boy grow into the man he wants (being like his father, Oden). It’s a somewhat softer version where he tells Sanji to tell his captain what he actually wants during their second reunion in Whole Cake Island, mainly without the kicking. As when Momonosuke himself asks for Luffy’s aid, he gives it, because the prince is asking for it, not his vassals.
And when he let Coby choose to standup to Alvis’s before he fights. I love how Luffy lets other people rly choose and make the decision for themselves instead of just tearing shi up
"Maturity doesn't mean you're jaded. Or you've become a scowling, angry adult." Yes, yes, I agree a thousand percent. That is so true. Angry, scowling adults can still be immature and shallow. Obviously, not all of them. Part of this is because they can often be limited in their viewpoint or considering their options.
it's one of my favorite things that Luffy constantly subordinates himself to greater knowledge. when Chopper says he needs an ingredient for medicine Luffy finds it. when Nami says to raise the sails Luffy raises them. when Law makes a plan Luffy usually doesn't actually follow it but he does his best. he demands complete freedom but he recognizes when others understand things better than him and will follow their lead.
I love that you specifically pointed out that Luffy knows Usopp isn't a coward, because as much as people like to forget, Usopp is *consistently* the *only* Strawhat to always succeed when given a task. He always finds a way, even if his knees are knocking and his palms are sweating and his bones are broken and he's positive that the next hit he takes will kill him, if someone on the crew tells him to do something, he does it. And that proves that he's always been a brave warrior of the sea, and Luffy could tell all the way back then.
@@Kobolds_in_a_trenchcoat You could've worded this better. Makes it sound like isayama was attempting to write a mature person. He did a great job at writing about what happens when an extremely traumatized child gets access to nuclear weapons.
@@loopygordoI see what you mean, its moreso eren is still thinking like a child at the end of the day, trying to make a decision way beyond his capacity. His idea of "freeing" is perpetuating the only thing he knew all this time, oppression. May be a weak interpretation but thats how i see it Edit: In opposition, Luffy may have lived a life of hardship, with his blood family barely being present, garp being disapproving of his dreams, sabo supposedly dying as far as he knew at the time, but he had shanks, someone who proved that being free did not mean having to push other people down
@@Kobolds_in_a_trenchcoat Eren wasnt shown to be mature at all though...? In the final flashback, he even admits to Armin that he was too stupid to think of anything better, so he just let his childlike idea of freedom come to pass. He wasn't trying to be mature at all. Rather, Eren was trying to take all the burden himself because he couldnt trust anyone else to save Armin and Mikasa.
I will never forget the shock I had after the pudding reveal Not because she wasnt acting suspicious before but the moment Luffy trusted her I was certain I could too. So that confused me extremely until the second reveal with her came up and I understood. My Dudes ability to look through people really played against himhere. It wasnt that he suddenly couldnt but that he was just too good at it. Puddings "evil" side is also a persona made to survive the BM Family so Luffy accidentally looked past the surface persona AND past the persona trying to trick them and ended at the traumatized and hurt little girl at the core. Thus she managed to pass the vibe test
Luffy is my favourite, I just love him. He seems like a really "Standard MC" on the surface, but his "Heart" is golden. There is a sense of "Feeling home" and "Feeling safe" when he is around or arrives. I know how the strawhats and the townsfolk feel, because I feel the same as them. And when Luffy beats the foe, I get all happy, as everyone else. It's so captivating!
From what I saw, there's one mention of Egghead in this video. And if you have watched the anime, then it won't spoil anything. If you haven't watched the latest arc in the anime, then skip from 40:36 to 40:42. You should be good doing that, but there may have been other mentions or images from the arc I missed.
You see about that consistently being Number 1. It's precisely because Oda is just so d4mn good at sculpting Luffy's character. He seems blank but when you just got an inch depth of him you realized, he's gold. And that was only an INCH! you can't help but treasure and adore him because of that! Oda is great at establishing Luffy's character. We love him so much because there has never been a conflict of morality with Luffy, he does what he wants! He's a pirate! But he's not evil! He just takes his freedom and run with it! He's not complicated nor he wants to be complicated, unlike in some other shounens where morality is often a conflict of interest in which case sometimes the audience is not always on the MC's side. Ex: Naruto, HxH, even Dragon Ball, or Bleach, or any other shounen! The conflict of interest often times involve morality or simply power. In Luffy, we found someone who has no interest what's your morality is, he's just a true free soul, and he does what he wants. And deep down, THAT'S what everybody wanted in life. We don't want to do good deed just because it's what's right, we don't want to do bad deed either! We just want to be free and easy! Remember on Sabaody arc, when Keimi was abducted and auctioned, there was no break-in fights. NO. The SHP was ready to follow the system, the rotten evil system, to BUY Keimi back. They're essentially participating in the evil slavery by buying their friend back from slave traders because they don't want to make problems. Did any of us think that's crappy? NO. Because they're pirates! They can do whatever the fck they want, the issue of morality is not on them but on the disgusting abductors. When they failed to buy Keimi back and a Celestial Dragon shot Hachi, Luffy, a newly arrived 'Idgaf/Igotnochillifyouhurtmyfriend' lil b4stard, PUNCHED THE FCK OUT OF that pig's face. And you know what his crew said? "Yeah, that's kinda expected." Luffy is true sense of freedom. Not a senseless violence and plunder. But also not the overly kind and generous one. He's the embodiment of that idea, that's why he's always number one. I still remembered how Rayleigh asked Luffy about whether he was sure he could conquer the sea? Luffy grins and says "I don't want to conquer anything, I just want to be the most free man in the seas." and that sets a fire in all fans' hearts. I'm sure even if Luffy said he wanted to conquer something at that moment, his fans would still love him. But he said that instead, that love turned into a passion. A hot burning passion that screams "YES!!! BE FREE!!!!" that exists in every human's heart. Oda did well with Luffy's characterization. Remember, Luffy never fight for complicated reasons. his reasons had always simple like "You make my friend cries." or "For Food." It's always the most simple and basic reason but done so beautifully. Like, in other shonens, those reasons are also prevalent, but pulled in such a fcking cheap way that it makes MC feel like a simp (looking at you Naruto) and the crying character feels useless (yeah, Sakura). But Oda managed to pull it so intricately beautiful that crying is not just for the sake of crying or sadness, when a friend of Luffy cries, it's because they've been too strong for too long. Nami's beg for help on Arlong park. Robin's cry that SHE WANTS TO LIVE in Enies Lobby. All of them are people who had been strong and holding strong on their own for far too long so they broke down. You don't see them as "Annoying people who can only ask for help" you can only sigh and say "Finally you ask for our help" kind of way. That's DIFFERENT. As a result, when the MC helped, you didn't feel "Ugh" but instead. "LET'S GO!!!" Remember how Vivi cried and said she wanted to save everyone? In non-typical shounen fashion, Luffy said "People died" meaning not everybody could be saved. He was not kind or generous, he's realistic and always live in the moment. What's important to him is the people in front of him, the background NPCs are not his concern, why should he be concerned? He's a pirate. He's not going to be trapped in one place just because everybody needs help, because he knows everybody always have a problem. Some shonen-typical fans will argue and hate his sudden heartlessness, but that's not sudden at all. You don't see him caring for everyone, there's always a condition for him to care, even on off-chance he ended up saving everyone from before Alabasta, that was only a coincidence, he never intentionally help anyone. He just helped people on the basis of his interest. He helped Zoro because he thought Zoro was cool, in Syrup he helped Kaya because only she could provide him ship in that island, in Baratie he fought Don Krieg because Baratie provided him food as a restaurant, by Arlong Park he was already familiar and close with Nami so he gladly fought for Nami ONLY when she ASKED for it in return he took Nami officially as his navigator, in Drum Island he didn't fight Wapol for the people, he fought Wapol because he was disturbing the peace of the doctors who treated him and his friends. Luffy IS NEVER COMPLETELY selfless, he grew up in a trashheap, fought beasts to survive. He's only selfless to people he held close, others? Not a fcking chance. But isn't that everyone? He's everyone's man. He's the true everyone's man.
I completely agree with you when it comes to Luffy and the Straw Hats. The Straw Hats really act like how a real-life pirate crew did. For the most part, pirate crews were democracies where everyone had a say. The only time when the captain truly took charge was during battle. And we 100% see that with Luffy. Later on, especially post-time skip he stops shouting "I'm the captain" as a way to get people to listen to him. But it does happen in WCI in a battle situation. Outside of battle, Luffy really defers to the person whose expertise it is on the subject. He lets Nami navigate, he lets Chopper be a doctor, and he lets Sanji cook. Hell, most of the Straw Hats were leaders in their own right before joining. Robin was #2 of a criminal organization, Franky ran a gang, and Usopp, Jinbe, and Brook were all captains of their own ships/crews.
Luffy talking to Koby in the beginning was when I knew that one piece would be different. The emotions, character writing and life lessons in this story are something special. Luffy is the goat
One point of Luffy's growth that I find so compelling is the way Oda shows the growth of his leadership skills and his idea of what a leader should be. Throughout his first few journeys he's encountered terrible leader one after another. Morgan, Don Kreig, Wapool, and Crocodile. While he understands these guys are like the exact opposite of what a good leader is, I think he truly doesn't understand what a leader represents until he meets Vivi. Vivi's conviction towards her people, the way she disputes things in a level headed manner, the way she puts her all out for what she believes will benefit her people, her willingness to do whatever to find a way to help her followers, and most of all the courage to stand up no matter how difficult or scary the challenge. These are all things Luffy takes in and learns from, he continuously applies the lessons he learned from Vivi and its shown to us in the most impactful way with Momonosuke. If you think about the situation Momonosuke and Vivi were in, they're nearly identical. Both are powerless royalty driven out of their country by a tyrant ruining their country that wishes to reclaim it. But with Luffy and Vivi the dynamic between the two is moreso Luffy learning from Vivi about what makes someone a good leader and directly compare that to Luffy and Momonosuke's dynamic. Luffy is the one constantly telling Momo how to act like a leader, he is the one doling out the wisdom, he is the one constantly criticizing him as a leader and to be a man worthy of leading the men of Wano. One of my favorite moments in One Piece is when Luffy yells at momo for just being a figure head and telling him to speak up for himself. That if momo really is the leader of all these great men that he should act like one regardless of his age. One Piece is truly PEAK!
I love the Water 7/ WCI connection, Luffy really matured after the saboady incident and I think seeing how quickly people can go (Ace) and Jinbei reminding him what his greatest treasure is, his friends, made him be more mindful of how he treats people
I feel like one of the most overlooked moments is when Luffy declares to Nami that she is his friend after he beats Arlong. Of course it seems like a typical shonen moment, but knowing Nami's past its Luffy's declaration to her that she is not some tool to use for personal gain to him, but when she is with him, she is his friend.
The thing I feel you didn't pointed out in your (otherwise excellent) analysis of the Usopp scene, is that the reason why Luffy was being so blunt about abandoning the Merry is because he was as distraught as Usopp was at that moment. Sure, he didn't understood the underlying complex of inferiority that was agitating Usopp's anger, but he was quick to respond with his own anger because he felt the same way about leaving Merry behind and he was just putting a front of carefreeness during that discussion because he had already internalize that Iceberg was 100% correct when he told him that the safety of the crew was the captain's responsability and that Merry was no longer in shape to carry the Straw Hats onward. Water 7 is a brillantly crafted flow of successive tragedies, and the fact that Ussop wasn't there to hear Luffy's initial reaction to Merry's condition, and Luffy's poor attempt at playing it cool when he was himself extremely emotive about the whole ordeal was a big part of what led to this clash.
The whole Merry argument between Luffy and Usopp was honestly perfect IMO. Usopp believes his only value to the crew is the Merry and Luffy just doesn't think that and never has, so the possibility that Usopp could think that he is holding back the crew is so farfetched to Luffy that he just can't comprehend what Usopp is feeling because it doesn't make sense to him.
I can't really understand how people assume Luffy hasn't matured. Have they not seen Water Seven Arc? Luffy is very respectable now and takes his role as captain more serious than before.
i didnt realize how big one piece really was until I started watching. ITS INSANE HOW MUCH OF AN IMPACT ONE PIECE HAS HAD and its honestly really amazing I also did not expect the luffy video to be this long😭 AND ITS ONLY PART 1..WERE WINNING TBH
I don’t know if anyone touched upon this but I think that when Luffy was about to be executed in Loguetown, he claimed he was gonna be king of the pirates, laughed, and accepted his death. It felt character defining to me, as we just watched this dude beat everyone up screaming about being the pirate king and when he’s on the chopping block he just laughs and says sorry to his crew, like he was having fun. It felt like a “Well, at least I gave it my best shot” kind of thing.
My first memory of Luffy happened when I was watching the episode of his fight against Don Krieg 20 years ago. I thought he was a really funny and interesting character. A rubber man who fight his opponents with his fists. But what I fell in love with was his sheer determination as he kept taking blows after blows and still stood firm against his enemy. This was my first impression of our hero. Eventually I managed to get my hands on the manga and I have been following his story ever since. Until the end of the line and for the rest of my lifetime, Luffy is one of my favorite protagonist in fiction, the young boy whose faith in liberty, hope and joy keeps creating miracles.
41:01 Omg i never noticed the detail in Luffy's face that portrays his inner turmoil. His eyes look paniced and his neck has those terror lines. That is absolutely amazing.
About Zoro being a first-mate/vice capitan. Luffy always said that his job as captain is to portect the crew, and early on, when Luffy can't do his job, that responsibility falls in Zoro. Of course every one can take care of themself, and there is Sanji too, but I always saw this as Zoro primary function, and thats why I take him as a First Mate
I find it interesting that these videos always make me cry in a way or another. It's been so much fun over the years that I tend to forget that Luffy and the crew have gone through a lot of crap. And when I get reminded, I can't help but weep like a little girl.
Tbh his character has already been developed but his character progression is really showing subtlety he still essentially the same but hes changed but if you never really gave it a thought its just like growing up youre still essentially you but you changed in ways, but seeing the difference on luffy of the water seven deal with usopp and how whole cake island luffy dealt with sanji really opened my eyes to this wow❤
50:50 this reminds me of Luffy hearing everything wrong when Franky mentioned Tom's brother in Fishman Island, and him saying goodbye to Judge in Whole Cake Island, ma boy is 100% oblivious to connections and family really is the freaks we meet along the way
Luffy's character development is one of my favorite parts of the story because it's not extreme. I don't know why people think that the only acceptable development is one where the character becomes a completely different person. If anything, such development is often poorly done and unrealistic. I also like that in One Piece "boy becoming a man" doesn't mean becoming bitter, cold, and emotionless. Oda really said fuck you to edge lords...
Wow! I wrote a thesis for my philosophy class just last week about why Luffy should be included among the sages for his embodiment of freedom and existentialist ideas. Your videos were what inspired me to start looking at One Piece through a philosophical lens, and a main reason why I settled on choosing Luffy for that assignment. Can't wait to see what you have to say about him!
I'll be honest, I thought this fabled "Luffy Video" was just a concept that existed in our heads. Jokes aside back when I first saw your Sanji video I didn't realize I was going to be anticipating this video series so much. You're genuinely one of the best content creators Ive watched in a while. The number one Garp hater strikes again, keep up the good work!
So I think most would agree that, in hindsight, shanks could totally have taken the guardian of the coast with his arm still in tact but didn't. This implies he did it intentionally and is therefore pulling an absolute IQ1000 guilt trip
Luffy reminds me or Kirby. A simple being who wants to enjoy life with his friends. And also who will empty your fridge and punch a mountain in half. Hey, nobody's perfect.
I was watching this one random anime scene and it's probably filler but in it Nami is scolded by Zoro for giving orders because she's not the Captain. Nami then retorts asking if he thinks Luffy is fit to give out orders and he agrees that Luffy isn't. Luffy who's been nearby and surprisingly listening to this conversation simply laughs, blushes and says "Really? Am I that great?" and despite it probably just being the usual Luffy comedic relief... it's interesting because of what Luffy says... He's proud of being someone who's not fit to give out orders because he values liberty, freedom and personal agency that much. He doesn't want to give orders because he wants everyone around him to think and act for themselves. Maybe he's even proud that his crew dedicate undying loyalty to him and follow him despite him never giving out any formal orders as such... Of course, this is Pre-TS Luffy... Post-TS Luffy does occasionally give out orders and commands to his crew but they are almost always validation and assurance for them to act on their own and handle their own situation in a way that benefits the side they are on.
First off, that intro was insane, mad props to the editor for that. Second, this video was honestly everything I could’ve wanted any more. I’m not gonna lie when I say that expectations were very high based on your past content. However it was still incredible, the analysis, the parts you chose to highlight, your own goofy editing, all of it was wonderful and I cannot wait for the next part.
Luffy’s existence as a sponge for everything that happens around is also reflected in his fighting style, where in G5 especially he copies and adapts the moves he’s seen others use into his own fighting style. His propensity to turn anyone into his friend also gives him a wealth of ways to fight and protect his friends
all this time, i’ve ignored one piece analysis videos like this one because i was afraid it would affect my own opinions or misinterpret my favourite characters. but man, it feels good when everything you already knew about a certain media, or in this case a certain character, is affirmed by other people except put together in a more eloquent way! in other words, i loved this analysis and am looking forward to part 2!
I love how Luffy never needs or asks his crew to be strong, he only wants to be strong himself so he can protect them They dont need to be useful (even tho they obviously often are for Luffys sake) to be valued, Luffy just has to like you 🙂
I THANK you so much for touching on the whole Water 7 Usopp situation and comparing it to the WCI situation. I see so many people talk about how "Usopp betrayed Luffy" or "Who was in the wrong? Luffy or Usopp?" and its so annoying because they completely miss out on the whole aspect of why this conflict even happened. I LOVE the scene where they fought because it felt so real, realer than anything i've ever watched on TV with ACTUAL real life people, because this fight wasn't two ideologies clashing against eachother or something, but happend due to Pride. When Luffy told Usopp to leave if he didn't like his ways, he actually FORCED Usopp to leave. Usopp didn't have a choice to leave or not, which people don't understand. Usopp critized Luffy for abandoing the weak if it benefits him, so if Usopp would've stayed, he would be a complete hypocrite cus he would've done the same thing!! Luffy fucked up. He immediatly realized he fucked up and the best thing of it all, was that he grew from this fuck up!!! Seeing Luffy going fom beating the shit out of his BFF to not even lifting a finger in self defense against Sanji is such a beautiful thing to see and you explained it perfectly
I may be boiling it down too much, but there’s something thematic, symbolic and a little bit funny about a rubber man’s greatest assets being his resilience and tenacity.
Ussop Is the BRAVEST straw hat pirate. The others believe they can beat whomever they fight. Not Ussop, Ussop believes he will lose, yet there he is fighting.
There’s a difference between being nice and being kind, and Luffy is the kindest person in the series. He just barely counts as nice, though. Being kind means to be honest, to be clear in your communication, and to always do the right thing no matter how that may look or make the other person feel.

I remember seeing online a while ago that if you ask any Harry Potter fan who their favorite character is, nobody ever says Harry Potter himself. Meanwhile, I have noticed when I ask One Piece fans who their favorite character is their always like "well besides Luffy...." Like it's just kind of understood that most One Piece fans just adore Luffy. In my experience people will have opinions on other characters, but agree that Luffy is just amazing. Nothing against Harry Potter fans, just something interesting I noticed.
I think Luffy seems to read like Gatsby. We never really get inner dialogue from him, he says everything he thinks, while we get that from everyone else, especially the Straw Hats. We get their perspective, even his enemies’ perspective and inner dialogue. But Luffy himself, his inner thoughts, are left largely a mystery, which I think makes him a much more interesting. He’s an interesting character because we don’t know what he’s thinking. Less is more when it comes to how he works. We assume he can read people because he ends up being right when he’s made a decision. But we never know what he’s thinking, much like we never know what Gatsby is thinking. The mystery makes him interesting. There’s a whole scene where the straw hats are talking while he’s fighting Lucci at Enies Lobby. They know he’s fighting, and they ask “how does he always know who he has to fight?” They are asking that question, knowing that Luffy is right, but we never get any of his thought process. Only the result. This is a theme in The Great Gatsby when Tom is constantly questioning what Gatsby is thinking, and that’s something we never get. We recently see Luffy tell the Straw Hats his ultimate dream, but we still don’t know what that is, only the reactions of the crew. The mystery behind this is what makes him interesting. I bet at the end of the story, we might actually get his thoughts, but for now, I don’t think we will. What do you think @MelonTeee?

I think many don't just wish they knew someone like Luffy, they wish they were, if not just a little, like Luffy.
i wish i can be my own luffy 🫡
Being around Luffy as a normal person is probably pretty hard actually.
I think the real reason as mentioned above is that we admire him and wish we could live as simply and bravely follow our dreams with the same level of confidence as Luffy does
For me its more like he inspires me to be a little more like him
Many ppl want a luffy but many ppl aren’t worthy to have him

It's like he has something just everyone enjoys, that's what makes him so good then

He isn't interested in hearing about Nami's situation and feelings on the matter from anyone else but Nami.
honestly a very admirable trait, ngl i think in terms of emotional intelligence it is so admirable to be like luffy
Not only that, but he refuses to tell people how they should feel about him, all through fishman island people ask him if he's a bad guy, and he just says "I dunno you decide that for yourself"
also, we do see him realise the history is important. see wano
AMEN!!!

That fact that Luffy manages a living embodiment and god of freedom and the world's liberator, a very human, fallible, and vulnerable character, and also just the silliest wackiest little guy who makes you smile to look at all at the same time is a fucking insane feat of writing. The character of all time.
Say it louder for the people that haven't read it.
Anyone with that amount of plot armour can be a symbol of freedom
A symbol of freedom who ignores thousands of people and fishermen getting enslaved , thousands of women becoming s3x slave
And the reason he can be the symbol of freedom is because he and his crew will be saved by the plot armour like his dad , revolutionary army or power up because of his fruit
Doremon, Goku,Naruto , Asta
Basically every main character free everyone
This is not something new
Berserk , jjk and aot presented this theme of freedom better as those series actually have stakes
And you can see how our characters make difficult choices , choice to struggle instead of giving up to their evil side
@@aniverse_574 Yeah other characters can embody freedom, but can they also be human, fallible vulnerable, AND a silly wacky guy?
There's a line from Arlong Park that's always stuck with me. He's fighting Arlong and flails a sword at him until Arlong knocks it out of his hands, commenting on how shit he is at it. Luffy responds with, and I'm paraphrasing here:
L: "You're right. I can't swing a sword. I can't cook. I can't navigate. I can't even lie."
A: "Then what can you do?"
L: "I can kick your ass."
This might sound like just a cool one-liner and it is, don't get me wrong, but I think it's also a really important part of what makes Luffy such a strong friend and leader.
I'll always remember this line due to Usopp's response in the anime.
"Oi."
Straight manifested buggy’s belief in him
@@fenris5932 Kuma, the Pacifista, & Kaido aren't sword fighters, so them not counting as losses makes sense to me.
@Lu_R true. There's a balance in place although it doesn't seem so.
@@bagonsoul
I think the biggest example of it was when they split up in Dressrosa and how Sanji's group listened to Sanji showing the trust they had in the strongest of their members (in the group) and why Sanji leaving devastating them so much
The Straw Hat crew dynamic is very anarchistic, yes. But politically, they are very much not; which is interesting.
I can believe he doesn't know how to read. Love that rubbery idiot.
He has no regular intelligence but damn if he doesn't have absolute peak emotional intelligence
@@calebbridges4748 Idk, man.... He misread his bounty when he got to 1,5B. He's not beating allegation, kinda.
Honestly, Luffy is one of the most emotionally intelligent protagonists out there. And there's lots of examples:
In Nami's case, at that time she resented pirates, if Luffy just invaded Arlong Park and knocked him down she could think it was just a stronger pirate fighting for a good navigator, but instead he allows her dictate the compass, and only acts when SHE asks for help. It shows her that he does care about HER.
With Robin, he insists to save her, and when she says she has made up her mind he basically says "ok, you can choose that, but when you´re free to ponder your options. If there wasn't any of this, what would you really wish?"
And with Sanji...
Or you've become a scowling, angry adult."
Yes, yes, I agree a thousand percent.

"I dont know why we are swinging hands, but we are swinging hands" 😂😂😂
I love that you specifically pointed out that Luffy knows Usopp isn't a coward, because as much as people like to forget, Usopp is *consistently* the *only* Strawhat to always succeed when given a task. He always finds a way, even if his knees are knocking and his palms are sweating and his bones are broken and he's positive that the next hit he takes will kill him, if someone on the crew tells him to do something, he does it. And that proves that he's always been a brave warrior of the sea, and Luffy could tell all the way back then.

"Yeah, that's kinda expected."
Luffy is true sense of freedom.
"LET'S GO!!!"
Remember how Vivi cried and said she wanted to save everyone?
He only helped kaya cause ussop asked for help and luffy liked ussop. Tbh kaya was a bonus for luffy.
Luffy is the embodiment of the human spirit... In the depths of his soul every man desires freedom
He's the guy that we all wish we could be to our abusers. Props to Luffy for beating abuser's, we Stan a king™
Love the respect on Usopp's name. Not enough people respect Usopp's dissolving of his first crew, despite the real tears shed.
@@TatsubeiYagyu Even if they were just kids goofing off, Usopp was the ringleader friend.
Oda just said it best “the king is a fighting piece”
That cover goes so hard, one of my favorites of all time. Oda was genius for coming up with a reason to draw tons of Choppers
One Piece is truly PEAK!
this was very beautifully put. thank you for sharing
I love the Water 7/ WCI connection, Luffy really matured after the saboady incident and I think seeing how quickly people can go (Ace) and Jinbei reminding him what his greatest treasure is, his friends, made him be more mindful of how he treats people
Luffy makes you realise how important emotional maturity is with the relationships you have with people.
I feel like when asked who your favorite OP character is, you just have to say first “well other than luffy ofc…”
This is so true. I told someone recently that Law was my second favorite character and they didn't even have to ask who was first.
The Drawk Show ft Mama Drawk has a section in their reviews of One Piece that is basically who is your favorite character of the arc besides Luffy.
Not for everyone , Luffy is cool , but for me he doesn't make the top 10 One Piece characters.
Luffy is the embodiment of the human spirit... In the depths of his soul every man/woman desires freedom
Thank you so much for the support! And I agree, Luffy truly embodies what it means to be human!
*Mel Wakes up in the middle of the night* - "I must make the greatest Luffy compilation right now"
The thing I feel you didn't pointed out in your (otherwise excellent) analysis of the Usopp scene, is that the reason why Luffy was being so blunt about abandoning the Merry is because he was as distraught as Usopp was at that moment. Water 7 is a brillantly crafted flow of successive tragedies, and the fact that Ussop wasn't there to hear Luffy's initial reaction to Merry's condition, and Luffy's poor attempt at playing it cool when he was himself extremely emotive about the whole ordeal was a big part of what led to this clash.
luffy isnt a self insert of the reader, hes a self insert for the readers best friend. everyone wants to be on his crew, not be him.
The luffy edit at the beginning is INSANE
I can't really understand how people assume Luffy hasn't matured. Have they not seen Water Seven Arc? Luffy is very respectable now and takes his role as captain more serious than before.
People think character development only counts if it's a huge personality change.
I think the key to Luffy's popularity is his absolute commitment to his crew. We all want to be one of his Straw Hats.
i didnt realize how big one piece really was until I started watching. ITS INSANE HOW MUCH OF AN IMPACT ONE PIECE HAS HAD and its honestly really amazing
I also did not expect the luffy video to be this long😭 AND ITS ONLY PART 1..WERE WINNING TBH
Luffy is absolutely my favourite anime MC of all times. He's the perfect combination of pure stupid joy, loyal intuitiveness and total badassery.
wake up babe that weird Australian who curses like a sailor and makes the best op video essays just dropped a banger
Until the end of the line and for the rest of my lifetime, Luffy is one of my favorite protagonist in fiction, the young boy whose faith in liberty, hope and joy keeps creating miracles.
holy shit i don't know why the beginning of this video actually screamed "HE IS JOY BOY - JOY BOY HAS RETURNED" to me. lfg pirate king!
I hope lordlook is proud of that intro, because that was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen
41:01 Omg i never noticed the detail in Luffy's face that portrays his inner turmoil. His eyes look paniced and his neck has those terror lines. That is absolutely amazing.
the intro only gave me back 10 years of lifetime litteral kino
About Zoro being a first-mate/vice capitan. Luffy always said that his job as captain is to portect the crew, and early on, when Luffy can't do his job, that responsibility falls in Zoro. Of course every one can take care of themself, and there is Sanji too, but I always saw this as Zoro primary function, and thats why I take him as a First Mate
YESS THIS IS WHAT WEVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR
One could say it's long awaited.
@@justinn8541akaDrPokemonGreatly anticipated, even
Melon drops the coldest Luffy edit ever in the One Piece fandom 😭🔥🔥
Jesus christ, Melon.
That intro was HEAVY.
50:50 this reminds me of Luffy hearing everything wrong when Franky mentioned Tom's brother in Fishman Island, and him saying goodbye to Judge in Whole Cake Island, ma boy is 100% oblivious to connections and family really is the freaks we meet along the way
I think its gonna be pretty Funny getting a equivalent of a Anime season but it is only Luffy Analysis.
The long awaited Luffy Video!
Does no one appreciate the joke?
I would love to read your thesis, if it is available somewhere 😍
Haha, so sorry but it's in Dutch, I don't think you'll be getting much from it! Appreciate your comment though, made me smile :)
@@sanderooh1834 😿 well I have to add Dutch to the list to language to learn👊✌
Grateful to be alive during the time MelonTeee dropped the luffy video 🙏
Luffy's fan simply have to fight the whole world just to say "I Love Luffy"
I'll be honest, I thought this fabled "Luffy Video" was just a concept that existed in our heads. Jokes aside back when I first saw your Sanji video I didn't realize I was going to be anticipating this video series so much. You're genuinely one of the best content creators Ive watched in a while. The number one Garp hater strikes again, keep up the good work!
So I think most would agree that, in hindsight, shanks could totally have taken the guardian of the coast with his arm still in tact but didn't. This implies he did it intentionally and is therefore pulling an absolute IQ1000 guilt trip
I can't wait to recline with a wine box and listen to this masterwork at 0.25 speed
The Nami scene in Arlong arc always brings a tear to me and I hope it never stops doing it
First off, that intro was insane, mad props to the editor for that.
What do you MEAN this hour-long video is just the FIRST PART!?
This is amazing! Keep up the magnificient work up! :D
1:17 no joke that intro made me tear up. I just reminded me how much I love one piece
all this time, i’ve ignored one piece analysis videos like this one because i was afraid it would affect my own opinions or misinterpret my favourite characters. but man, it feels good when everything you already knew about a certain media, or in this case a certain character, is affirmed by other people except put together in a more eloquent way!
in other words, i loved this analysis and am looking forward to part 2!
I love how Luffy never needs or asks his crew to be strong, he only wants to be strong himself so he can protect them
They dont need to be useful (even tho they obviously often are for Luffys sake) to be valued, Luffy just has to like you 🙂
I THANK you so much for touching on the whole Water 7 Usopp situation and comparing it to the WCI situation.
Luffy is simple. But he is anything but ordinary. Even in the realm of shonen protagonists. Actually especially in the realm of shonen protagonists.
THE LUFFY VIDEO! THE LUFFY VIDEO IS REAL
I just watched the intro and it was IMMEDIATLY worth the wait!
*grabs popcorn, restarts cuz i need that intro goosebumps again, and explodes in hype*
AAAAAAAA MINA MINA SHIMAWA ATAKEEE PAINA PURU PURU ATAMA POKA POKA AHO BAAAAKAA
Second verse!
I may be boiling it down too much, but there’s something thematic, symbolic and a little bit funny about a rubber man’s greatest assets being his resilience and tenacity.
I came here for top tier analysis and was greeted with the greatest Luffy edit of all time, the hype has hit new levels
You are the best channel of One Piece. Seriously, your videos make Oda's work better
I love your analysis! Luffy is my favourite character of all time and I love hearing new understandings of his seemingly simple nature!
WENT TO A CON DRESSED AS LUFFY TODAY. ONLY TO COME HOME. AND TO SEE THE LUFFY VIDEO. Obsessed. I love it. I love the parallels between whole cake and water 7. Insane. Bonkers.
im at ennies lobby in the anime, at the part where Luffy's talking with Bleuno about how losing to Aokiji made him realize he needed to get stronger so he wont lose anyone and I couldn't stop thinking about this video essay and that fear of loneliness I hadn't noticed until you pointed it out and 👌👌👌this series just stays so good and deep, i love it
THE LUFFY VIDEO IS REAL!!!!!!!!!! I got hooked on your videos after the Nami video, and I'm so glad that we're getting to the captain at last. I can't wait to see who or what else you cover next 😁
You dropped the best Luffy edit in the first minute of the video and then talked almost an hour about funny stretchy pirate. That's peak content over here
that opening gave me shivers
That intro tho... I'm so happy i could cry
I've always said Luffy is a walking oxymoron. He's so difficult for me to explain coherently.
I remember seeing online a while ago that if you ask any Harry Potter fan who their favorite character is, nobody ever says Harry Potter himself. Meanwhile, I have noticed when I ask One Piece fans who their favorite character is their always like "well besides Luffy...."
Like it's just kind of understood that most One Piece fans just adore Luffy.
I never even thought about that! We never have his inner dialogue, we have all the straw hats, bad guys, royalties perspectives but never Luffys 🤯
