      Yup, firm I used to work for outsourced this type of work. Didn't have enough hours to try and learn or fast enough to produce. Now we can literally texture and do most in house then push it into unreal. Of course with more time. To tweak and get it right

    Great review! I've been testing Datasmith since August and I've probably saved about 400 hours of work. I used to have such a complicated workflow going from 3ds Max to Unreal-- about 12 different maxscript files and if I did anything out of order I'd have to start again, haha, life is better now.

      Have you checked? It supports a lot of different formats, and some of them might be compatible with C4D. It is nice to have a direct exporter in 3ds Max, which I don't think they have for C4D. They are working on one for SketchUp, though. I think eventually there should be widespread support.

    Have a question. Usually when doing marketing shots artist would use basic box unwraps. Unreal likes models to be unwrapped into islands so upon import it can create a second uv for light maps. What does data Smith do about that ? Also in the video it appears that your textures didnt make it?

    Hi there,
    A question - If you get Unreal Studio - Does it have Vray for Unreal built into it - As Chaos group charge {$80 per month} for Vray 4 Unreal?
    I am a bit confused - I have VRay for 3d Studio Max - But on the Chaos group site, you have to buy Vray for Unreal as well - So basically you are buy Vray twice - 1 for Max and 1 for Unreal?
    Am I right with this understanding?

    • @Learn-archViz
      @Learn-archViz  5 лет назад

      Yes, they are two different programs. It does not come with Unreal Studio. Adding V-Ray for Unreal gives you extra capabilities beyond basic Unreal Studio.

    • @Learn-archViz
      @Learn-archViz  5 лет назад +1

      They are essentially the same thing. Unreal Studio is just kind of the name they gave this project, which includes datasmith and other materials that are geared to industries aside from gaming. The actual engine remains unchanged. Datasmith just becomes a plugin for your existing Unreal Engine install.

    I need help. I really dont get it! I exported .DAE files from Sketchup, converted using FBX converter, open in Unreal and I got 200 different files from 1 building!
    I then BUY Sketchup Pro to use Datasmith, I then export inside Sketchup directly to Datasmith, importing this in UE4, and I got the same result, 200 different objects that is supposed to be 1 ??
    How the f... do you make it merge togheter to 1 file ? please

    • @Learn-archViz
      @Learn-archViz  5 лет назад +1

      Are you getting 200 files, or just 200 different meshes within your project? One is normal, the other is not. When importing .fbx, you can import all as one mesh or as separate ones. With datasmith, everything comes in as it was in your 3d program, separated accordingly.

    I just started working with the beta a few days ago and im correct that yes vray lights convert but it’s not an exact replication?...for example, linear lights for something like cove lighting. I may be wrong or just don’t know (I’m new to unreal but not vray), but is it possible to simulate that sort of lighting in unreal? Also, lighting from emissive materials? You can get actual lighting from emissive materials/meshes in vray but will that translate to unreal ? Lastly, frosted glass also doesn’t seem to translate over and that can be very problematic for archviz. And collisions still need to be manually setup, correct?
    Anyway, great video my friend...this is all very exciting!

    • @Learn-archViz
      @Learn-archViz  6 лет назад

      You're basically right no all accounts. The lights import, but are not always what you expect. I have been mostly redoing the lighting, other than the sun and skylight. You can get materials to actually emit light in Unreal, but it is not always the cleanest light. Also, for linear lights, you can create them by making point lights have a shape to them in Unreal, using the source radius and source length settings. This is the kind of stuff that is not translating directly using datasmith. Honestly, lighting has not been the major time consumer for me in Unreal. It has always been getting clean imports and fussing with materials, so even if that is all Datasmith fixes, it has already saved me huge amounts of time and effort.

    • @Learn-archViz
      @Learn-archViz  6 лет назад

      Oh yeah, frosted glass has not been working for me correctly either. It may be something they work on fixing for a final release. SSS materials have caused me some problems as well.

    Thanks for going through this, your videos are always informative so is the classes on udemy. I was curious if you could show bringing a project in from revit to 3ds max and then into unreal. I have tried it but it seems that the texturing must be changed in 3ds max before you bring it in otherwise when applying substance materials they are extremely small tiled, using just autodesks original materials do not seem to fix the issue either.

      How can someone tell what tool you converted your 3D scenes with in house? It will be more of a pay as you go for new and commercial adopters, where they get newest full builds, tech support, push stuff (can request custom stuff/changes) and private discord etc .. probably.. I HAVE HEARD, that once you access the Beta, you can continue to use it for free even after the final version is released. I sure hope so. I'm gonna stop 2 of my 3 machines from logging in to Epic from now on (LOL) so it can't be 'force updated' and crippled! LOL I love it that much, having tried it once before dinner! I have worked in 3D Studio / 3ds Max since release 1 for DOS, I have waited DECADES to be able to do this! :) A revelation... My wings have healed!
