I genuinely feel like I wouldn't be the person I am today if I hadn't caught this on Netflix during the brief period they had it. I still think about this movie a lot.
Same here. This became one of my favorite movies and I watched it a good handful of times. I still think about the ending where Bill looks at all the mundane things we take for granted and exclaims "isnt everything amazing"
I wish it was back there. I struggle to put to words the multitude of emotions I feel w it.
Me too, man. Me too
Same it's a moving piece of art that I haven't been able to forget since I saw it on Netflix
yup
Netflix needs to bring your work back
The note in his lunchbox becomes even more soul crushing when you find out that doctors heavily warned Bill's mother never to have children because of family history, and she spent all day practicing writing "I am so proud of you" into his lunchbox.
For some reason the fact that Bill's mother was plagued by her demons, but despite that made such a big effort to love her son is unbelievably sad to me. It's reasons like this that make you empathize so much with freaking stick figure that make this movie so tragically poetic. Let's keep in mind that the mother is only even a side character.
Don is fucking genius. He was once asked whether or not he takes drugs to come up with all his ideas he responded "nah man, I don't even take caffeine as it makes my hand shake too much for drawing" you just know that he has been plagued by his own inner demons as well. I have no problem with classifying him in the same category of artistic genius than Van Gogh.
Mateo Alvarez - Don is a genius, but he also seems _super_ well adjusted. Van Gogh was a hermit who never saw success and was plagued with serious physiological and social problems. Hertzfeldt is a college educated, articulate, conversational guy who also happens to make Oscar award nominated indie animation. Doubtless he has his specters, but we all do. I honestly think he's just an everyman who has developed immense talent, creativity and perception into how people work - a better package deal than Van Gogh ever got, imo.
I don''t find that sad, I find that enraging. What a selfish, inhuman level of cruel to do that to a child just to try and fill some empty void you have. It's grotesque.
Lettuce Prime Your comment is much more plausible and well thought out, i don't know why I'm saying that to you. Not knocking the original poster either haha
@@lettuceprime4922
I'm not sure I can entirely agree with that. Now, I can't claim to have a complete understanding of who Don Hertzfeld is as a person based solely on his creative output, but the sense I get is that he's writing what he knows. Considering how intimate this movie is with mental illness, familial troubles, loneliness, existential ennui, and death, I'd be surprised if he was _just_ an ordinary every-man who has no experience with such things. He seems like a guy who's seen lots of bad things in his life but has emerged stronger and more well-adjusted for it so he can relate his experiences to the world.
Another point I find very heavy is the fact Bill is dying from cancer in his brain, and it's likely because he was in contact with asbestos gloves for extended periods. In a way, his own mother may be the reason he's dying of cancer.
"... The other kids were surprised he could even run that fast."
The delivery kills me each time.
Don has such a way of communicating the profoundness and absurdity in the mundane details of life that we look back on and realize were so formative. His work is comforting yet slightly unsettling and I love it.
Does anyone else think it never happened, with his brother? Later in the movie, they explain that Bill makes up memories to fill in the holes, and it seems more plausible that his mother has schizophrenia and not that his brother had hooks for arms
If I recall correctly, the narrator also states that he remembered people that never existed whilst showing Randall. That leads us to assume that Randall never existed
@@tylercallahan7514 yah exactly
How much of his family history do you think was real too? That scene alluded that most of the stories of the family tree was probably a lie.
This made me incredibly sad
I don't know whether to find this hilarious or frighteningly tragic.
Why would you find it hilarious?
Canadian Totoro it's a mix of black comedy and tragedy.
The animator is known for both.
kitten48484 This wasn't intended to be humor. It's supposed to just be sad.
Canadian Totoro That may be, but this entire film (and I mean the whole movie, not just this clip) always have a kind of dead pan humor to it.
Like the kids being more concerned that he could "run that fast" over that he just drowned.
It's not meant to be OMGLOL type humor, but subtle.
you can laugh *and* cry
You have a point.
Every time I see a child with aluminum hook hands chasing seagulls yelling BOOON I think of this
Remember being pretty young when I watched this movie (like 13) and it had an impact on me that I’ll never forget. I’m 21 now and I don’t think I’ll ever forget the moment I stumbled upon this gem
This is such a brutal video. The whole movie is amazing, but this is the part I always think of.
The scene with the lunchbox note is perfect. So bittersweet. I would love to have that frame of animation printed and put up on my wall.
There's a shirt of "I am so proud of you" available for 5 more days in his community posts 😬
These are some of the saddest two-and-a-half minutes of animation I've seen.
There's just something so abstractly beautiful and tragic in this opening.
(I just wish there was some way to properly end this comment.)
I teared up so hard at the end of this.
If you were around me, you'd have seen a grown man cry. This scene cut me deep.
@@Soultrip89 It's always a rough experience having wounds scratched at that, maybe you didn't even know existed. I'm in a better place than I was 6 years ago, so watching this again after reading your comment was a bit easier.
@@Stigmaphobia777 Time always lets things heal. It never fully goes away, but it gets easier. I watched this movie about 6 years ago as well. For me, this movie hit me hard at the time, because I watched my grandmother waste away from a brain tumour a couple years prior.
@@Soultrip89 me too man
I don’t care about food, when I start working this movie is the first thing I am buying
This whole movie is such a beautifully written story. Few movies invoke that level of emotional rollercoaster.
This part hit really close to home for me. It's all so personal.
Rejected used to make me cry with laughter. Now I am crying with brief moments of laughter in between
Don Hertzfeldt. This man is PHENOMENAL :) He makes you feel for some figures he draws with circles and straight lines. He is a genius.
Don Hertzfeldt is a genius with these films.
Something about that hit home. Though I'm not sure what it was, something contained in this arbitrary story reminded me of of something I couldn't comprehend until mature enough to not only understand; but to have found myself in a mold of similar being.
I cryed for a reason I'm still uncertain of
David MacDonald Five month late thumbs up. As it's rather difficult to thumbs up such a comment.
It's cool
SlamifiedBuddafied Yea I don't know why but this struck an intense emotional chord with me. I watched the movie 3 days ago and I still haven't found a way to completely process it.
SlamifiedBuddafied i agree with you more then i have with any one in my entire life
One day I wish to create something as beautiful as you do.
I feel somthing like sadness but not quite at the end. What a challenging film for being so short.
this is just a clip, the full film is called ITS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY its on netflix
Well, you're a master of comedy and tragedy, whats next?
ilovetheusers Now he's doing comedy and tragedy with science fiction.
Even the clip brings tears. Thanks Don. c:
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!
High Art yeah?
This is mortality encapsulated into a 1 hour film. I am kind of amazed how I came across my favorite film just by scrolling, and taking interest from the cover of some film on some rubbish site like IMDb
"His parents argued again that night and she threw meat"
I am so proud of you. .
Strange. But weirdly likeable
Andrew Grey thanks mom
"On his sixth birthday, his mother gave him a postage stamp and a piece of yarn, and hugged him for 5 minutes." is such a gut punch
Absolutely terrifying thought that you can never ever fix a broken mind. Bill will stay with his illness for as long as he lives.
This touched my core in ways I didn't even imagine anything could....TT.TT
This video makes me cry so consistently
"the other kids were surprised he could even run that fast."
This man's work is freakng amazing.
I'm so proud of Don Hertzfeldt. Creative genius.
Put an “i am so proud of you!” Note in my 6 year old’s lunch box today, then hunted down this video to post about it.
Let's hope your kid isn't named bill
@@archerdoesthings Let us hoped their kid is named Bill
This is beautiful. I have only seen the first chapter of this and the clips of the others but I love this.
For Don Hertzfeldt, this video is like rainbows
Beautiful as always, Don.
I watched your movie at the Annecy film festival, and I loved it.
This is art which can touch my heart
omg!!! i want to see it all. i loved it!
Now this has been incorporated into Don's new film _It's Such a Beautiful Day_!
:D
still the best movie I have seen to this day
"I just can't handle this god damned woman!"
Bill had a disturbing childhood and a horrible life....
I miss this damn movie

Someone posted the whole movie with italian subtitles but English dub
Love this one ...the best among the good
I have been trying to find this for years
My love for this movie
Awesome and haunting for me.
goosebumps
yup. totally gonna watch this for the 5th time.
I found it amusing that after this poignant clip from one of Don Hertzfeld’s heartfelt animated films is a shitty Disney Plus advertisement for one of the most soul-less movies “The Lion King” remake.
Nice work dude
This my favorite scene, hook hands
como dicen en Colombia: "aquí no pasa nada, céntrate en lo positivo y sigue adelante"
... hasta que somos de los que otros se alejan tristemente.
The fact that this story was made by Bill's mind just to fill in gaps is just sad
Could be. Its more of a distorted memory.
@@sur-r.e.a-_tis-ch in the movie it's stated that when the brain experiences heavy memory loss, it creates false memories and conclusions to fill in gaps. And when that is said this story along the others that appeared in "i'm so proud of you" appear on screen. I believe this story was just made up by Bill's mind to justify why his mother overprotected him so much, and why his stepfather left.
how the hell do i notice things every time i watch this movie when its literally just stick figures
This is really interesting! :D
thanks don
I wish my mom left me nice notes like that
Don is brilliant.
Nice
"Im so Proud of you."
It's Such a Beautiful Day is a masterpiece!! But was the narrator voiced by King Missile?
Jesse B - IIRC that's the animator himself, mister Hertzfeldt.
Can anyone help me find the name of the music that plays from 0:37 to 1:26?
I've been trying to identify it via Spotifiy and other 'soundtrack lists' but no luck so far... Thanks in advance!
did you find the song? i would like to know also
@@44darkness16 Sadly no, my search continues!
boooooooooooon
booooooooon
does anyone have the music for this? I have been searching forever. its not on the spotify soundtrack, and its not listed anywhere. its gotten to the point where im listening to random chopin and wagner tracks hoping to find it.
Is in the end credits of movie, try Imdb?
yeah i tried imdb, it doesnt have a very detailed list. ive been able to find just about all of the music in his films except this piece.
ColonelChamberlain idk if you're still looking but it's Richard Strauss Vier Letzte Lieder
boooooon!
boooooon!

fuck, im gonna call mom now
Damn.
Trying to convert my friend, so I sent her this.
convert to what?
13 people have no emotions.
EDIT: I feel so sorry for them.
More about bill... more I lose my ability to be comfortable in existence.......
Pretty deep.
wow
😢
1:40 - 'In the summers, he also had to wear Pac-Man on his head...'
Tragically hilarious.
0:47 im going to hell for laughing at this💀
hi i am a big fan of yours .my name is daniel and im fron argentina.
I wonder if there is a possibility that this film upload to youtube
Do a it’s such a beautiful day 2 where it goes about Randall’s story
Have you seen the full movie ?
Spoilers Ahead :
Because in the third act it's heavily implied Randall and most of Bill's family stories were made up by his mental illness
@@TheOmegaGamer yes i have i just got a little confused but i knew bill had a mental illness and that randall could’ve been made up
I love this as much as Forrest Gump
did his step dad shot himself or am I reading to much into little details
how do you know he shot himself
+Samantha Cabrera the meat seemed like a odd detail and so did the hole in the ceiling and the mother reaction seems like it could fit in with this theory. I think it may be possible that this is just the way he repressed the memory of it and that his brains were meat and the hole in the ceiling was from the bullet and never got covered up
+joel stewart the only flaw i see in this is that he said "i cant take this god damned woman" after the meat is thrown
+J. Sauce some dying words are better then others
joel stewart
yea man but if his brains are splattered against a wall i don't think he would be very coherent :D
Anyone else say "Booooon! Booooon!" with him?
Does anyone know the name of the music at the beginning of the clip?
Zueignung. Op 10. No. 1. Richard Strauss. Here is the link moondoge.co.in/?ref=724428dcf5e9. Im still looking for an instrumental version though

Bill's father shot himself there and then
2:17
Gaaah! Oh no!
did randall die of pneumonia or did he drown? did he even exist?
Later in the movie its implied bill made this up
Bill's dad shot himself.
Anyone else think that Don sounds like Cookie Masterson from Jackbox Games? Or is that just me?
