      You do have to be pretty central on Time Crisis 2, but otherwise that was ok. After I did this video, I found Ninja Assault more problematic on the edges - I think I had to jack the brightness up a lot, but I can't remember now - I must look again.

    Did you need to use a converter board for the CPS3 to display on this? I thought about picking one of these up locally for all my entertainment needs (VHS, arcade boards, etc.). A lot of monitors need a scaler, especially PC CRTs since they _only_ do 480p and up. My goal is to play House of the Dead 1 on the original Model 2C board at home as I already have most of the parts, but it requires a medium res (24.8khz) monitor that actually outputs video from the game's gun I/O board itself.

      This TV is native 15kHz, so that matches arcade JAMMA boards, so the only converter I used was some op-amps to scale the voltages down to 75ohm SCART levels (a UK/EU supergun circuit - see my JammaToTV video for a diagram). Sadly 24kHz games are in a bit of a no-man's-land as far as TVs and monitors are concerned - this TV won't do it, I don't know any that will . CRT projectors often sync to 24kHz though (mine do), so I guess you may be able to play a giant game of HOTD against a wall (not much help - sorry)

      If you Google “ where are the rear projection games” you will see a link to a thread on UKVAC. There is a picture of some MVS games on this TV in there. @@micolino83 Good luck. I should probably remind you that some are a bit better than others as you get burn-in and gradual ageing, so it is a little bit of a gamble, but a cheap one :-). Check the screen isn't badly cracked too as you'll struggle to find a replacement. And get a remote as it's useless without one.
      Connect a games system to it and when there's a picture, you can adjust the convergence in the OSD (let it warm up for 10 minutes first). Sort the centre crosshairs out first and then do the corners. There's also a very powerful convergence in the hidden factory menu, but you shouldn't need that. Actually got me thinking I might do a video guide on it.

      @beaumotplage  Год назад +1

      Hi, the Sony is a three-CRT projector, like mine. The Sony is also of a much higher specification - it will operate up to 1080i, it has a vast array of inputs. My concern though is that it might have image processing, such as upscaling, that will remove the nice scanlines and the compatibility with lightguns. I looked at the manual and I think this is probably true, but I can't see if it is de-selectable to get a 'raw' image. If that doesn't matter, it's probably a very nice, huge 4:3 TV.

      @@israelgonzalezabrego3551 Hi, I think that 61" Toshiba might also have lots of upscaling hardware. It has component input, suggesting 480P and has things like picture-in-picture and noise reduction. Like the other TV, you might be able to disable it, and it might be a superb TV to own/rescue, but you might be safer looking at slightly older TVs which don't have the aforementioned inputs/features.

    • @beaumotplage
      @beaumotplage  3 года назад +3

      Hi, it wouldn't surprise me if all the PS2 gun games are 480i, any maybe the same for XBOX. There weren't so many HD CRTs out there and I bet a few of them had digital image processing which would wreck the precise timing of the beam that these games rely upon. Of course you could get progressive shooting games in arcades (Virtua Cop, HOTD), so the technology is viable, but they were complete systems so paired to be compatible.

    • @MattHunterx
      @MattHunterx 3 года назад

      beaumotplage hey, thanks the swift reply. So on Xbox, there’s a whole thing where you can push games to run in 480p and even 720p. If the games run on the Xbox in 480p or 720p, you think it will be fine on a 480p/720p TV with a light gun? Or does the light gun tech rely on the screen (and game) running in “i “? There’s so many variables in all this it’s hard to figure it out from reading online !!

    • @beaumotplage
      @beaumotplage  3 года назад +1

      @@MattHunterx The scanline-based light guns rely on the beam timing, so if you go to progressive, the beam moves twice as quick (31kHz 480P vs 15kHz 480i). I don't know what goes on inside the console and the gun to handle it (the game code won't be counting the beam time in software as it's orders-of-magnitude too quick), but I would be very surprised if any form of 'mod' to a game/console to change 480i to 480p would still allow a lightgun to work. Of course, if the game states 480p on the box, then that's another matter. I have to admit, I know little about what's on Xbox - this PS2 is fairly new to me as well, and looking into that, 480p seems very hit and miss for which games run (and the light gun games don't). So definitely tread carefully if you want lightguns and a progressive-only display setup.

    Would you say this is better than OLED screen? I might want to get a CRT Rear Projection TV as a main TV

    • @beaumotplage
      @beaumotplage  3 года назад +4

      Sadly, no, I'd say it's very different.
      If you want to play old games at native resolution (240p or 480i) and use lightguns, then it's brilliant.
      But if you want 720p, 1080p, 4k, then that's LCD/OLED territory.
      The viewing angle is very poor on these too - LCD and OLED will be on another planet in terms of brightness at all angles.
      Of course if there was a multi-sync, HD 50"+ (4:3 or widescreen) version on one of these, I'd be in heaven, but there isn't (and the 'HD' sets have horrible image upscaling that adds lag, removes the scanlines and makes them lightgun incompatible)..
      So I love these TVs to bits, but they're from another era to be used with games from another era :-(.
      I do have other videos of CRT projectors uploaded - they can come in a huge range of resolutions, the issue it they're insanely massive and you need to build a screen. Plus a lot of this stuff is rather old and will likely require repairing at some point (I had to fix one of mine due to a convergence circuit issue).

    • @beaumotplage
      @beaumotplage  3 года назад +6

      Hi, it's usually monoethylene glycol, which is also dyed, so not easy to get ahold of (in the UK anyway). It's a build-up of bacterial mould that seems to appear in some CRT projection setups and actually folk try to capture and re-use the coolant, it's so hard to find. But fortunately none of the 3 34VJ33Qs I have seem to suffer from this, as it looks a pain - drain the coolant, slice off the silicon-bonded lens, clean the lens, re-seal it and refill. My Barco projector does have mould on one of the lenses so I might do an experiment with a UV light source to see if that kills the mould without needing to dismantle.

      It's a good question. I wouldn't run it with the sunlight straight onto the TV, but otherwise you don't particularly need a dark room like you would a projector. Obviously it's not as bright as a standard CRT/LCD and it has a very narrow viewing angle. Same tech as you got in the arcades, so if you see a Time Crisis 4 with original screen, this is the same sort-of brightness.
