  • Silicosis can develop within a few weeks to even decades after exposure. Over time, exposure to silica particles causes scarring in the lungs, which can impair your ability to breathe. Visit Lung.org/silicosis to learn more about the disease, how it’s diagnosed and treatment options. Thank you to iQ Power Tools for helping to create this educational video.

My grandfather suffered decades from silicosis as he started working very young in a dusty black granite quarry. He had to fight tooth and claw for compensation due to poor work environment and lacking safety gear as the symptoms manifested long after he quit. Stay safe working.

I was exposed to silica dust in a shipyard from 06 to15. OSHA regs were not in effect then. Now I am having the exams prior to acceptance in a lung transplant program. The problem is since I was exposed before OSHA instituted stricter controls on exposure it was left up to the employer to self police. My exposure is treated as a workers comp. issue and since "defense contractors" have lawyers and money and more time than most workers do the cases die before they can even be heard. Until silica exposure is treated as strongly as asbestos exposure nothing will change and all the older exposure victims are left trying to get disability through social security. If we live that long.
