The Polish-Lithuanian War/Conflict lasted from May 1919 - November 29, 1920/September 1 - October 7, 1920 (depending on which country you ask … the reason Lithuania claims it was so much longer is because they say it was part of the Lithuanian Wars of Independence). It was an undeclared war, where they were basically just beefing over who got control of Vilnius and some other stuff, while both simultaneously fighting off the Bolsheviks.
The League of Nations eventually made them sign the Suwałki Agreement, which said that Poland could have the Suwałki region, but didn’t really mention Vilnius. The new border it drew, however, left Vilnius open to attack.
One day before the agreement was to go into affect, Polish general Lucjan Żeligowski pretended to mutiny and invade Vilnius- but the whole thing was staged in accordance with orders from the Polish chief of state.
After Vilnius changing hands like 7 times, Poland eventually established the Central Republic of Lithuania, which went on to become the Wilno Voivodeship, with Vilnius as its capital. In 1923, everyone was like “okay so the armistice line is the new border” and Lithuania was like “??? Hell no dude that’s literally our capital.” Poland kept Vilnius, however, and Lithuania established the temporary capital as being Kaunas.
Lithuania totally cut off Poland until 1938, when Poland sent them an ultimatum saying “be friends with us in under 48 hours (and also say Vilnius is ours)…or else…”
Lithuania agreed to reestablish relations with Poland, but still argued that Vilnius was Lithuanian.
Then, suddenly: WW2.
In October 1939, under the Soviet-Lithuanian Mutual Assistance Treaty, the city of Vilnius was returned to Lithuania in exchange for 20k Soviet troops being allowed to chill in Lithuania. Vilnius was reinstated as the Lithuanian capital.
The Soviets were like “no guys don’t worry you’re still totally independent ❤️ we’re friends now!” and then, literally less than a year later (August 3, 1940) the Soviets occupied the Baltics, and Lithuania lost its independence. The Nazi’s occupied Lithuania June 1941 - late 1944, when the Soviets re-occupied Lithuania and (officially) kept it until 1991.
