Used to fish for them with my grandfather. He always threw his burley out the upstream side of the boat to keep them closer. We used quill floats and when he got a down he would put the rod down and roll a smoke (15 seconds or so) to let the slack go out of the line and give the fish a chance to swallow the bait. He never missed a fish using this method. He was always up me for striking to early and missing a lot of fish. We used the stringy creek weed and kept it laid out between damp sheets of newspaper and rolled up in a hessian bag. Would last at least a week that way. Hope that helps.
Awesome session Sammy! Saw some whole Luderik in the grocery store the other day, was tempted to but because I have seen you catch them. Tinny success! Keep the episodes coming. I have a video idea - it would be awesome to see you and Robert Fields (from field trips) do an episode or two on each others RUclips channels. He is USA based buy comes to NZ once or twice a year.
Sad I couldn't join you for another luderick jaunt. Work got in the way. However I will go down and see if I can catch at least twice as many as you in a couple of weeks 😉
awesome video man. its pretty cool to use a different bait to help target specific species. i still remember the sensation wen i saw the rod going crazy from using the weed for bait to get those fish
My only advice, particularly if you’re in heavily fished areas or when the fishing is slow, is to use significantly less weed. Only use enough to just cover the hook 🤙
In that strong current have more water mixed with your sand to make it denser and compress it harder to make it sink lower in the water column. Throw your burley upstream so it works close to the boat. Less time drifting and fighting fish when they are close to the boat where your burley's working,
I found the hairy stringy weed to be more effective n use the cabbage weed for burley. Good fun and quite simple to do. How we kept the hairy weed was between sheets of newspaper in a dark cool area.
Hey mate! Great work on the Luderick. I'm thinking with the new tinny, and the next couple months warming up . How's a couple Wivenhoe and Summerset sessions with the I'll mighty bass and yellow belly. Cheers 😉🍻
Nice session Sammy! It’s so interesting to see how effective that berley was hey 👌 The only time I’ve ever chased Ludes was actually with your old man The Phantom, I couldn’t believe how hard they go! 🎣
40 years ago - the Short and Tiger Mullet spots were wall to wall in season. It's a long term affair once you catch the bug!! Every few years the Alvey ballbearing centrepin (that sidecasts too) still gets a run in northern NSW! And no - you can't have my weed spots too!!😅
Sammy. Nice to see your channel subs have had a nice pump in the last few weeks. Quality content will continue to bring them in, mate 🍻🍻 By the way. I have never eaten a Luderick. What are they like as a table fish?
Plenty of small dollies on the fads if you are looking for some content. Going to head out with the bream gear and some poppers for some good honest fun soon.

Been waiting years for another luderick episode!! Such a great fish

Cracking good times on blackfish, so much fun as a little tacca.
I heard that sea grass beds as the best to drift over. Wading is good too!
Where was your/my old 3138 with the blue and white binding?
Might have hung on to those other two with the longer, softer wand 😉
Old fella tip 😊

Always good to see you take a break from the chaos and just have some good old fashioned fun! See you next week Sammy!
Great vid Sammy. It’s made me dust off the Lude gear 🍻
Luderick are seriously underrated great gob bro
fished for them a few times and never caught one , caught plenty of them fishing for bream with bait like yellowtail strips.
Caught one off the sand at Blueys Beach on a prawn was pretty surprised as I thought they only ate the weed.
So many in the Gold Coast and hardly anyone fishes for them. Such good eating and great fun to catch
Go to the Bermagui boat ramp and use some Striped Tuna if you want to catch a big Luderick

One thing is for certain, all the fisherman I know around my parts always have weed on them.
Not sure if its the same weed though.
A centerpin? The great State of Canadia should salute you! LOL
About the equivalent of our red tail surf perch. Definitely a good feed.
hi and Gday from sunny Queensland , top vid this one , ta cheers

I have only caught ludrick on prawns on the rocks never tried using cabbage for bait. Now I know how to bait it I will have to give it a go 🍻🍻
Mixing it up

I dunno if you meant it this way but calling that flatty a good little pre-lude fish before your lude fishing session got me laughing
wow nice video💝💝💝
Updated the label on the Phantom’s Luderick box yet Sammy? 😂
I use mustad viking hooks in size 10 far superior to those green hooks . My pb is 56cm ive never bent out hooks
Is that kainga bank

Nice
Criminally understated style of fishing. You don't have to be 70+ years old to enjoy it or master it
🤙🎣
Ooohhh wares the fantom
Good video bro can you give name of that lure thanks sam

Something a little different!

Yeah mate that’s the one 👌👌

Wrong way around mate. Snapper fishing when you can’t luderick fish. 😀
What, no phantom out fishing you? How is this a proper luderick vid? 🐠🐠🐠😁
Yes, very sad. I was working.
