Do what works for the sound your going for. Dont think to much. Once you become to technical with music the good stuff leaves you in the creative process.
Nothing wrong with using basic effects to enhance your sound. Delay, reverb, saturation, compression. Without these you're not effectively utilizing all of the tools available to enhance the character of your music, and making the most of the entire stereo field. Why wouldn't you use them? I 100% agree that sound selection is critically important along with simply getting the levels correct.

Nah u need plugins to remove harsh frequencies. dame is a you tube producer not a real producer that selling industry beats so take his advice with a grain of salt. I'd go with a engineers advice
Using good quality sounds reduces or eliminate the need for using a ton of plug-ins. Most drunkits are already processed. Same goes for vsts.

I use Eq and PC compression all my drums they are already processed. You definitely have to separate the bass and kick
