Hi Beans, great to hear from you, and everyone should roll a project once in their life, I would always suggest to anyone though to maybe steer away from the classic go to choice of a 'cheap old hack or cheap run about', because you'll loose passion for it very quickly when you start to see that it won't be a bike you'll want to live with! It's always cheap maybe to do it that way, but after all the time and effort and investment, what you're left with is a bike that'll have cost you 6x what it's worth... the costs of refurbishing a bike is more or less the same whether it's a 250 or a 1 litre muscle bike... at least if you are gonna put all that money in to it, plus your time and effort, then pick something you'll be proud to own at the end and finally mate, be prepared to keep it, because not many bikes are selling these days, unless you're giving them away. Keep safe and well there mate, all the best, Del

Nice job but I do not understand why you didn't polish those levers, brake and clutch. These little details for me makes all the difference between a nice job and a great one.
Brilliant del sometimes watching you work reminds me of when I was a child watching blue Peter making something just need you to get a bleach bottle and turn it into a rocket or something 😂
Never done it mate... have cleaned a lot of them though.. cotton bud and some white spirit will clean off the white residue.. but not had one so bad it couldn't be cleaned.
Indeed mate, it practically dissolves it as it's not petroleum based and literally washes it out when you bleed up, the first few quirts of fluid out the bleed valve come through pink, and when it runs clear, you know you've got it all.
Here you go my friend, here's a link for it, a perfect little machine and I'm using it all the time... www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/garage-and-workshop-9643/parts-cleaning-tanks-10814/electric-10815/parts-cleaning-tank-bench-portable-67155
Firstly try and clean it mate, very often it's just dirt, so if you can jet some brake cleaner in behind the steel back plate, you'll usually wash most of it out, and with the front, if it's faded, or gone a little opaque, you can polish them with metal polish to clean out some of the scratches as they're usually plastic, not glass, but never replaced one so can't answer your main question, I wouldn't know.
You can replace the sight glass if you know the size, I replace all of them every time I restore a master cylinder. They are literally pressed into place with a O ring between the glass and housing, never had one leak yet.
Never thought I’d get to the point that I recognize what you’re doing. Question though, does the grease you use on the cylinder itself when you insert it into the bore have the possibility of getting it’s way into any of the hoses or passages anywhere? That always worried me.
Good point well made buddy, but read rubber grease is not petroleum based, so it doesn't form a contaminant, the fresh brake fluid when applied and flushed through, will rinse out the rubber grease and leave everything clean... if you take a look in to it, grease is actually a misnomer, it's more usually referred to as red rubber lube and is more silicone based, it softens and conditions rubber and ultimately preserves them long term, and it's great as these cylinders will sit empty for many months till I plumb up the system in the end!
Hi Markie, I get this a fair bit, but I have to admit, and maybe I'm strange, but I really like the original tapered octagonal grips from the factory... they are thinner at the switch end, fatter towards the outside, and the flat sides on them give a real grip... not just that, and in some ways, most of all, we're really holding the budget tight on this one... all things cost money, no matter how small, and a bunch of small stuff adds up to a big bill... it's crippling when you get online, order half a dozen small parts and it comes to over £100 AGAIN!! ... The wheels, with the new back tyre, have come to over £1,000 alone, and that's re-using the front tyre, as it's nearly new, I would love to splash out on all these cool things, but already spent more on the bike that it cost us to buy, so when something like grips are in perfect condition, they're good to go! ... and as I said, I kinda like them, they bring a hit of 'original' to the bike!
No John, no contamination with the rubber lube, in my experience, the brake fluid flushes it out with first bleed up, you'll notice the first waste from pumping through is pink, and it gradually runs clear, and everything operates normally.. ive stripped systems after assembling with this and there's no trace of it left inside once it's bled through with fresh fluid.! All brake and clutch internals ordered from Wemoto come with a small supply of Red Rubber lube in the kit mate.! Have a good week and thanks for your support John. .. All the best. Del.
10:20 my hydraulic clutch lever also squeaks, especially when the bike warms up. Anything you can recommend to "fix" the sound? Is it because the bushing in the lever is too old?
Have had that a few times mate, and most commonly it's a build up of water content in your master reservoir, if you use the bike all the time, moisture and rina eventually creates enough vapour inside the breather section, just under the cap, water droplets form and when they water mixes with the brake fluid, which absorbs it, and that content concentrates in the master cylinder itself, it's the main seals squeaking against the bore... easy remedy mate, just change the fluid, take the cap off, suck out what's in the reservoir, top up with fresh fluid and then bleed that down through the system and out the slave cylinder... put 2-3 reservoirs of fluid through the system before you top off, and it'll stop it squeaking... if you think it might be the lever, squirt some lube in there and see if that stops it first.... but in my experience, it's water in the fluid (which should be changed every 2yrs anyway).
@@Moonfleet41 Changed the fluid very recently in addition to rebuilding the master and slave cylinders. Don't hear the squeak when I push the master in with a screwdriver but only when I squeeze the lever. White lithium grease quiets it down but it lasts a day or so.
@@OKMotorcu Ok, drop the lever out and check the bearing faces.. metal to metal faces can judder n squeak without constant lubrication if they are mirror polished from rubbing... if you knock off the mirror finish with a scotch brite it can cure it for a bit longer.!
Nicely done, Del! Your attention to detail pays off once again. I was trying to read the warning from Triumph (upside down) on the master cylinder... presumably it was the type of fluid to use? Hope you both are staying safe there. It’s a sad and lonely US Thanksgiving holiday approaching this week... no grandchildren or children visiting. 😟 Be well! 🏍👍🏍
Hi Gary, you're right, it's always a fluid warning of one form or another, and ironic, this is probably what's gone wrong in the system... I think they've got some DOT5 fluid in there and then tried to flush it out and it makes tht brown slime cos it doesn't mix! Perhaps they should have read the cap! Sad to hear about Thanksgiving, as that's a social celebration and not about gifts, which kind of contradicts this whole lock down thing, but I think it's going to roll through Christmas too, I guess we've all got to write off this year as a bad one and look forwards! We're in total lock down here as you know, shops closed and no mixing of households at all... it's almost like a perpetual Sunday from the 1970's. Stay safe and well there both, and keep smiling, 'bad times are temporary', D&Px
@@Moonfleet41 ok that’s what I figured after your analysis on the vid. Bizarre how the previous owner ignored it! Yes re the shutdowns here and there- very disconcerting and somewhat Orwellian. We have friends in Toronto that are just besides themselves with the fast creep towards socialism there. Stay strong, my friend... ok well, back to my bathroom remodel here. 😎
Sure thing mate, I think this is a DOT5 mix up, seen that kind of gel before, and you're right, there's no flushing it out, it's replacement only for hoses! Have a good weekend mate.
Great camera work, especially the closeups! Two questions, why would you put those ratty caps back on the reservoirs? Are you planning on replacing them?
Hi Patrick, those are the original factory caps, nothing wrong with them that a little repaint won't cure later on, got to keep the reigns on the budget mate, can't just keep replacing everything all the time, with the wheels ive already spent more than the bike cost on parts... saving outlay where i can buddy.
@@Moonfleet41 Absolutely agree on the budget. Just thought that if you were going to keep them you would have cleaned them while you were cleaning all the other parts. Totally digging this build mate!
Merry Christmas you guys! Hey i was wondering did the wrong fluid get poured in the resovoir? Or was that mixed fluids? That nasty goo was horrible. We worked on a van that had bad brake calipers. The guy put hydraulic fluid in the resovoir. Lol 😂 great video. You take it to the next level bro! Thanks for sharing! ARCO
Hi brother, yes I believe it was, the contaminant in the system isn't grainy and contains no solids, it's purely a slimy gel, exactly like you get when you mix DOT4 & DOT5 brake fluid together, the system can often work ok, specially if there isn't much of it, and I think considering it's in the calipers as well as the master cylinders, they've tried to flush it out by bleeding through lots more fluid, but as you can see, it never works! All gone now and new hoses mean the hoses will be fresh and clean!
Been meaning to ask. Is red tacky grease the same thing as red rubber grease? If not I can’t seem to find red rubber grease anywhere at auto parts stores.
Ha ha, no, nothing Alien about it, i made it myself from some twisted steel square bar, and it was the first ever project on my lathe two years ago... Here's the link if you want to check it out. ruclips.net/video/BlX9sUtyrXQ/видео.html
Yes you can mate, any fasteners company can replace them, a lot cheaper than the dealer, just take one along to any local fasteners firm and they'll match them up for you!
Hey Del, as always loving the content!!! Genuine question, no trying to be a dick, you always seem to start with the dirtiest part first in the parts washer, with it being a closed system would you not be better to start off with the cleanest and finish with the dirtiest?
ALl the parts were equally dirty mate, and there's 15L of fluid in there which gets changed as soon as it gets a bit grey, and as you'd have seen I'm sure, once they're out the parts washer, all parts are cleaned thoroughly with brake cleaner, so any residue is removed!
The wheels are laced, and seeing how they look im so glad i didn't attempt them myself, really complicated hubs, and for a first time, this bike is too valuable and special to risk screwing them up... they look awesome, and will really lift the standard of the build. Next video buddy, can;t wait to get at them.. First job will be sealing the spokes as i don't want to run tubes..!

Hi Mike, Damn those bleed valves aye, why would any manufacturer put anything else by full stainless steel in there.!! OK, the heat gun is fine, it shouldn't blister the paint, they are designed to get hot in use obviously, Use the week to your advantage, give it some heat around the seat of the valve, not so much ON the valve (because you want to heat the casting away from the valve to release it.) then spray on some WD40 and let it soak in... come back twice a day if you can and just squirt a tiny bit more on it every day, maybe give the valve a little twist to work it round the thread... then when you're ready to attack the job, heat it again, and work the valve back and forth with lost of WD and you should be able to work it loose and get it out mate.. ! Good luck with it and have a great week buddy.. Take care both. D&Pxx

Here you go my friend, here's a link for it, a perfect little machine and I'm using it all the time... www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/garage-and-workshop-9643/parts-cleaning-tanks-10814/electric-10815/parts-cleaning-tank-bench-portable-67155
Ha :-) +1 for the "stale pastry"
still makes me wonder how long the fluid was in there to make it so gunky...
What kind of solution do you put in your parts washer
Here you go buddy.. this is the stuff.. www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/degreasing-solvent-emulsifiable-5l-59168?search=AK05&description=true

What can you do if the sight glass is "stained" or yellowed? Is it replaceable or do you need a new master ? Another great video
@@stickyrubbers where do you buy them from?
@@markbranton1240 I bulk buy them direct from China, if you know the size look on eBay
@@stickyrubbers thank you for the info. I have an 1982 Yamaha Seca 650. It needs a new glass, cant see through it anymore
Never thought I’d get to the point that I recognize what you’re doing. Question though, does the grease you use on the cylinder itself when you insert it into the bore have the possibility of getting it’s way into any of the hoses or passages anywhere? That always worried me.
It should only be enough to lubricate the seal, Del used too much.
@@Moonfleet41 much appreciated Del. Could not find absolutely any similar dissertation on this anywhere
Enjoying the build dell 👍🏻did you not fancy any built well
Fat grips or some new 1,s would of looked nice 🍺🇬🇧👍🏻
All the best mark
Great video, Del. I assume that the red rubber lube does not contaminate the brake fluid?
@@Moonfleet41 I'll try.. Thank you!
Be well!
Penny must hate it when you steal her lip balm for the garage!
Northern England viewpoint🤘🏴it looks like mechanical surgery on the operating table !
Ha ha.. That'll do for me.!
Are you going to seal the rims, so that you can run tubeless?
Yes indeed, all coming up shortly!
nice job del and your right that sludge dose not look healthy m8 best with new lines all round safer atb m8 iain
Sure thing mate, I think this is a DOT5 mix up, seen that kind of gel before, and you're right, there's no flushing it out, it's replacement only for hoses! Have a good weekend mate.
Show my friend
Just curious..... why did Triumph use JIS head screws on a British bike? Do all master cylinders come from the same place?
Made by Nissin.. Japanese.!
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks. Explains why they all look the same - apart from the brand on the lid
Dude, where do you get a scribe like that?
I made it myself..!
Been meaning to ask. Is red tacky grease the same thing as red rubber grease? If not I can’t seem to find red rubber grease anywhere at auto parts stores.
Yes mate, simple Red Rubber Grease..! check online, plenty about.
Is there a cool story to the scribe? Looks like alien technology or Harry Potter chromed his wand!
Ha ha, no, nothing Alien about it, i made it myself from some twisted steel square bar, and it was the first ever project on my lathe two years ago... Here's the link if you want to check it out. ruclips.net/video/BlX9sUtyrXQ/видео.html
Delboy's Garage nice one. Just about keeping up with the flood of vids without scrolling back through. Keep it up
Del can you get them reservoir screws in stainless mine are not in the best condition and would like to replace them with something better.

Why didn't you spray the bodies they looked a bit scruffy
are the wheels laced mate or are you going to have a stab at doing them yourself ?
The wheels are laced, and seeing how they look im so glad i didn't attempt them myself, really complicated hubs, and for a first time, this bike is too valuable and special to risk screwing them up... they look awesome, and will really lift the standard of the build. Next video buddy, can;t wait to get at them.. First job will be sealing the spokes as i don't want to run tubes..!
@@Moonfleet41 never seen that done before, sealing the rims, that`ll be a fun watch, bullet proof these older triumphs mate ain`t they, did all my major service jobs on my 02 America when i got her, thanks to your vids for that because ide never worked on a bike until then, your vids are the perfect reference material next to a Haynes Bible.

Sure thing Joe, I'll pop you an email with the link! Hope you're well, have a great weekend Sir... lovin' the steam engine build.
Hiya del mike again ;-(, just gone to change the bkleed nipples on me front brake calipers and the left side one is seized dam it ;-(, can i use my heat gun on it to give it some heat or is that not enough heat from the gun will spray lots of wd40 on it next weekend havent got the time till then, put the right hand one on no probs there, need take that off again and put some copper slip on the thread thanks del as always say hi to penny pls bro ;-),
Hi Mike, Damn those bleed valves aye, why would any manufacturer put anything else by full stainless steel in there.!! D&Pxx
