Inspired by the "Dear Fat People" responses. I wrote an open letter to social media through SPOKEN WORD. [Subtitles Available] We often blame technology for a lot of the problems faced in society, such as cyber bullying, vanity, insecurity. However I like to argue that the fault lies in the mentality that people adopt when they are using technology. So rather than addressing individuals I decided to address social media as an entire entity with a collective identity. I hope looking at it from this perspective, people who adopt negative personas when using social media, will acknowledge the implications their actions may have on the people on "the other side of the screen". Ultimately if the technology is stripped away, we are still mere humans beings with feelings. Do you communicate with someone online, the same say you do offline?

I think social media has completely deluded the meaning of the word "like". What does it even mean anymore when you hit the "like" button? What would be the equivalent of the "like" button in person if you had to say something directly to the creator? And what about the "dislike" button? What would that look like in person? It has become so easy to give our approval or disapproval of someones creation with no explanation, only the click of a button, perhaps followed by a detached comment. While I found "Dear Fat People" to be absolutely ridiculous and disgusting, I love how you chose to make a different point relating to it, one that I have wished to convey for so long. We really do need to change the way we use social media and technology. As always, this poem was amazing. The topics you choose are always fantastic. I watched your video about exam results the other day in my English class and it was amazing I had recently seen it a long time before that but it refreshed me and I've been going through a battle with my school about dropping out and there doing everything in their power to keep me there so they came to the solution to put me on a program called life skills and can I just say it is the best thing that's happened because I don't get an Atar I don't have to worry about my exams I don't get a percentage at the end of the year but I get my graduation certificate but it still feels wrong my place isn't at school there's no point in me being there because I'm getting no qualification. But I'm being made complete ur 12 and graduate by my mother and I also attend a private school that $7000 a year that's $7000 my mum doesn't have that she is struggling to provide for our family it's ridiculous the stuff they expect us to learn these days. Anyway I just want to say your videos are amazing.

As much as I liked the poetry and rhetoric of the video, I still feel as though recent arguments are being targeted at specifically social media itself, rather than the people that seem to abuse it. I think that social media is supposed to be a platform of communication that transports the opinions of people to one another, much of which, as was demonstrated in the video, can be rather immature and insolent. However, I don't think that social media itself is to blame, but rather the people that abuse it.
