This Sword is Beastly! (Two-Handed Katzbalger?)

  • Have you ever wondered what a two-handed Katzbalger would be like? There are some depictions of Landsknecht mercenaries with a Zweihander that is basically that, with "pretzel" quillons and a similar pommel shape.
Lancelot Chan created a design just like that, in the form of the "Red Baron" German battle sword. He sent me one along with cutting material, so this is my first impression and test. Yes, it will cut... and keel. :)
    lancelotsword....
I also compared it to other swords to see how well each performs on these targets (which are more challenging to cut than tatami mats):

Thats why a tatami mat shouls be accompanied with a green bamboo core to get more realism out of them. Not saying it is a perfect equivalent or we do not have anything better these days, but it is traditional and with a thick bamboo core quite hard to cut.

    • @ProductBasement

What I noticed about the Shmashir is that, despite being an effective cutter against other mediums, it had a tendency to slide when it faced resistance on the pipe because of the extreme curve it has. In the slow-mo shot, it faces more resistance when it hits the pipe core, so it starts to slide during the cut. As it slides off, less of the cut is able to make it through, which means it isn’t able to complete the cut/slice and performs worse in this test because of the extreme curve. This is why it might be a great cutter in other tests but not this one, which may potentially tell you about its effectiveness against bones and other such details

  • @The_Modeling_Underdog

    That was an impressive blade.
No worries about the edge alignement with the Shamshir, Skal. I'm pretty sure the guy that ended up with half his leg ham sliced with it wouldn't have cared in the least about the edge being aligned or not.

You can clearly tell from this video how the blade's profile is ideal for cutting, by how easy it is to guide it on the cut and how the blade likes to "separate matter". That's some really nice craftsmanship for a dedicated purpose!

  • @TeaBurn
    @TeaBurn 3 месяца назад +7

Damn, that's a mighty fine sword from Lancelot Chan. It's both a beauty and a beast.
From what I understand, tatami mats are good for testing your edge alignment, but soaked newspaper with cores are tougher to cut through and thus are better to get closer to simulating real-world usage and how it may have performed in history. I guess the more expensive option isn't always the best when it comes to targets.

Seeing how passionate you are about a damn good sword, even after all the doubts and difficulties that you've had is... Everything. You checking that edge... That shit is what life's all about

I've learned a lot from Skall over the years. The first thing I noticed about the Baron was how there is basicaly no point on the blade for thrusting. The blade barely tapers before the rounded end. The implecations were obvious, and Skall's cutting proved it.

Many people see a sword and think "that's must be somewhat heavy", but if it's made correctly, they're much lighter than you think, and if the tempering was correctly done, you'll have a blade that you could pass to your children. It also helps when you accidentally hit something hard and the edge doesn't give a single ****. Quick pass through a whetstone, a strop and voilà!, like it never happened.
Edit: Support your local blacksmiths! It's a tad more expensive but trust me, you'll have an amazing blade and you're also preserving an art that should not be lost.

I've sworn off purchasing swords until I manage to find a very specific type (trying to fund a comic so random sword-buying was the first thing to get dropped from the budget) but if I were still into buying swords? I could see myself buying that B-E-A-utiful two-handed sword.

I don't know why but that's the first sword I've seen in a long time, that got the instant reaction of "I need to see that thing splitting a skull" out of me.

Well now I find myself wanting a new blade. That sword looks absolutely my type. And it's got kind of a unique look to it. Wow does it ever ever cut like a beast!
P.S. It was a fun surprise to catch you today as we were both travelling! Thank you for taking a second out of a likely tiring day to shake my hand before I rushed away. Certainly made mine. Like I said at that moment, really love the content and always look forward to it.

Ah, the legendary and hard to find polypropylene tubing. Peter Johnsson originially suggested that as a better bone simulator way back when. I have a little stash, just waiting till I get around to gathering enough newspaper to wrap it in. You see, back before X and such, we used to print all the words on thin paper, instead of putting them on the internet.
