The Angel Peak campground is free, and there are sites with great views and less industrial noise. Gas wells and compressor stations are common in the Four Corners region. They are the reason for the roads that you used. The gray bentonitic clays create the deep slick mud. Not an easy place to visit in wet weather.
I didn’t realize that the Black place was so remote. Especially when I consider how O’Keeffe would have traveled when dirt roads were considered roads. I would imagine that she might have visited when it was warmer and dry. Thanks for talking us along. I love that you were able to be in the exact spot and have a photo there, too. That is impressive research.
Yes, I think most sane people visit when it's warm and dry 😁 Thanks for watching!
I'm not sure what the elevation is. I forget. Angel Peak is 6400-ish feet, so you're probably a mile or so up at the Black Place. My take on that part of the country is May is when you want to be there. Between the cold and the hot, Arizona and New Mexico have lovely spring.
My home state! No end to the beauty here. Thanks for this exploration.
It's a beautiful state, for sure! Thanks for watching.
If you haven't visited b-4 you need to take a trip to the Bisti-De Na Zin Wilderness area south of Angel Peak. Only word to describe it is "otherworldly."
I went years ago and made a video about it 👍
You have a real "knack" for making great videos and your passion for camping and exploring really come through. I am 76 years old and I share your interests but I no longer am able to hike like you do so I very much appreciate your willingness to share your travels with people like me. Thanks!
Ya know, Tristan, your videos are a very good comfort. I once backpacked as a boy and that never left me.Traveled a little. Grew up watching "Frontiersman" TV shows and such... Never left me. Now, retired, even early, Heart attack and Bypass survivor, widower, cancer survivor... I travel a little - been to a few disaster zones overseas and felt like not enough help... But still love "going." Not too old, but body challenged: your vids are a gift. Views of places I long to see, but might just not make it. Too Po' to support you. But, thank you, little brother. Keep on! I pray that you prosper well through your work and your adventure.
I first learned to appreciate her work years ago at Lake George. That has made me want to see her later home in New Mexico, experience her inspiration. Thanks for pointing this one out!
Thanks for coming along on the adventure!
I loved Georgia O'Keeffe historical stuff, Nice Job!
One can certainly see O'Keeffe's fascination with this area. The desert, like the sea shore, is "fluid" in that it constantly changes. Intriguing!
She's from wisconsin Sun Prairie.
Beautiful Angel’s Peak😮. Looks like a castle in the sky. 😊👍🏻
Yes it does! Thanks for watching, Sharon.
@@SUVRVing Love your videos doing what I probably won't do. 😥
I sometimes wish geologist Myron Cook could hike along with you. That would be super cool.
@SUV RVing i was there many years ago was in the summer dry and hot...thank you again. By coincidence I was today in the other place that G.Okeefe used to go around Abiqui....those gray hill are beautiful....
Stellar views Tristan! Georgia O'Keefe is my favorite artist , amazing person, you really should check out the museum. I would never have made it to "The Black Place" through all that mud. Thanks for taking me there without the struggles. Thanks again!
Yes, I should check out her museum at some point, though I'm sure I wouldn't be able to film there. Thanks for watching!
Before clicking the play button l was like "Cool he's in ND at The Badlands there"! It is so similar it's astonishing.
This is definitely going on my bucket list. I love badlands, in fact Badlands National Park is my favorite park period.
Then you should absolutely visit this place!
BRO! Even if I had never watched one of your videos, that intro had me hooked!
That area is insanely beautiful. Adding to my MUST VISIT list right now.
Thanks for sharing this Tristan. Safe travels
The black and grey in the hills along with the red don’t really have anything to do with the oil and gas in the area. They are from the minerals in the clay (iron, manganese, etc.) and also coal. There is a lot of coal in this area.
San Juan Basin is known for natural gas production, and that has been the major industry since the 1940s. It’s starting to slow down considerably since the drilling has died off in the past 10 years.
Great video. Sorry you caught us on a wet year. Normally we’re in the middle of a drought. 😂
I always end up feeling glad that I watched one of your videos.
Always look forward to your videos, you never disappoint; loved it😎⭐️🤩
Great to hear! Thanks for watching.
Cool place! I would have never known about it if you didn’t show us? Another fantastic video, thanks for taking us along!
Thanks for watching, Susan!
Another great video Tristan! In my opinion your videos are among the best that RUclips has to offer and all of the unseen work you put in to create them is appreciated. My favorite part was the Georgia O’Keeffe historical segment which combined two of my favorites, Georgia O’Keeffe and Tristan’s videos. Win win!
It just blows me away, the amazing places you find in this country. Those badlands look epic. I’d love to see you climb Angels Peak with your GoPro on! 😁 Sooo looking forward to a new season of SUV RVing adventures.
The clouds flowing over the canyon walls was spectacular. I’m glad you got some wonderful video of it.
In DC there are quite a few of O'Keefe's paintings on display. There is one that reminds me of the view you showed right before you turned to show the black wavy rocks...the experience of the colors she used, the luminosity of the clouds was just amazing. I moved back and forth in an arc of 180+ degrees to experience the whole painting. It was a landscape of lighter undulating hills with clouds in the sky. Highly recommend. Not sure if it was at the National Art museums by the Capital buildings or elsewhere.
My favorite part were the rocks! My brother calls those rocks 'leaverites', as in leave 'er right there!
As an artist it was wonderful to the spot where Georgia O’Keefe did her work! Thanks for braving the mud!
Angel Peak looks great! Go there! All that mud was gross but worth the rockhounding! Cute little Geodes! Hope you don’t get stuck in mud leaving this area!❤️😀🇺🇸🚙
Dude! That opening. Woah is right!
Now having watched the remainder of your very spiritual video... your recognition and compliments to artist Georgia O'Keeffe are so special.
Georgia O'Keeffe undoubtedly hears you... sees you... and appreciates you, Tristan. 🙏
.
Re-creating the sitting Georgia O’Keeffe photo was amazing. What a great experience
I stumbled upon the Angel Peak Badlands when I was traveling through that part of NM and it is definitely breathtaking to stumble across. As others have already mentioned, the campground is indeed free. When I stayed, there were zero noises from the oil equipment so maybe there are certain times that are better to visit? I did notice a lot of locals would drive out to the campground to watch sunset as it's an amazing sunset spot.
That stuff stuck to your feet and on and under you SUV is known as "enchantment".
❤
respect for staying positive in all that mud, i know that's a challenge! i spent the winter in and around Durango and an not at all surprised to see such a grave mud season...i was also really injured so i could not adventure as much as i usually would so this series is really appreciated!! im heading to Cleveland clinic to have both knees replaced (from accumulaing decades of rock climbing knee injuries) and cannot wait to be mobile enough to explore again....until then, i have your vids!!
Knee replacement is not all it is cracked up to be. Do your own research. The better doctors state clearly that all joint problems can be cured without surgery or replacement. That includes joints that are down to bone on bone. So don't be in such a hurry to go the replacement route. Once you remove a joint you are in the hands of your doctor, regardless. There is no alternative. So do check out the alternatives first. Be double sure. There is nothing to go back to after replacement. Talk to people who have had replacements. There are a lot of dangers. And people do die from infections after replacements.
I jad the right knee replace about 5 yesrd ago, no problem.....about the infection tou can have that from any operation..
You are one of the lucky ones. I know two people who died from the infections. You need to do your own research. The doctor is selling the operation, he won't tell you what you need to know. Research the history of the AMA. They attack people who tell the truth. Do you know there are 600,000 cancer deaths in the US every year on average? Do you know the AMA banned all 15 known and proven cancer cures back in the 1950s? Banned them without testing even one of them? And you trust them to do your joints right? I've cured myself of skin cancer, high blood pressure, arthritis, and a gallbladder/liver problem. All for a few dollars compared to what the AMA would charge to treat any one of those. I saved $48,000 on the skin cancer alone. I cured myself for only $33! Do your own research!
Wishing you luck on the knee replacements! My husband is 12 days post bilateral knee replacement and it IS tough, but we have the long-range goal is sight. (Easy for me to say, right?)
The thing they didn’t tell us (or we didn’t comprehend it) is the level of pissed-off-ness of all the soft tissue that has to be squished out of the way and dis-attached from your bones in order to cut the bones for fitting the new joints to them. That’s what’s plaguing him now and sleep is difficult because he just can’t lay in bed for more than an hour or so. Recliners are good to have, but they have their limitations.
As for the infections that were mentioned, our surgeon required a dental visit prior to surgery to take care of any abscesses or what have you. He wants NO possibility of infection post-surgery! I would recommend doing that even if it’s not required.
Again wish you well on the surgery!
I know many people who had joints replaced, and they all say they should have done it sooner. It gave them their lives back. Orthopedics is one of the best things about western medicine. They are really good at it.
Angel Peak Badlands were a great surprise on my way to Chaco. I'll also have to make a return trip to get down into the canyon.
Another amazing vid. Even more amazing for the fabulous segment on O'Keefe. Thank you.
That’s the mud I mentioned in your last video comments section; Chaco to Pueblo Pindado was grey and composted of different clays, mean stuff.
I loved the black place and your narrative is so informative and sincere!
Very cool seeing where Georgia O'Keeffe was inspired! Thank you for showing it to us. I was always intrigued by her fascination with this area.
By comparing O'Keeffe's photo with Tristan's video, you can match up some of the bushes in the background. This means that even those bushes are still small as of today, some of them are more than 80 or even 100 years old. This explains why desert ecosystem is so fragile that even if you by any chance killed a bush like that, it will take more than 100 years to recover. So outdoor guys, please please do be careful when you are out there.
NM has been my favorite place since childhood! Can't wait to get back!
Loved the tie-in to Georgia O’Keeffe with the visit to the Black Place.
Love NM - thank-you for your views!! Even the muddy ones! 🙂
This is a wonderful video and beautiful way to share Georgia O’Keeffe and some of her work (she is my favorite modern artist)
What an incredible place-I'm not sure if I would have the restraint to leave those awesome rocks behind. Thank you so much Tristan-loved that you added Marias' picture next to yours 💋 Sending you & your family some grandma love ❌⭕❌⭕
as you say EPIC views AngelPeakBadlands, esp the drone views, and loved the Georgia OKeefe references... thanks for sharing...
It is a conundrum of needing to develop resources but keeping the land not impacted too. It’s why the National Park system is so important to preserve. It looks like, on the short glimpses you give, that at least the company doing the development is trying to keep the machinery minimal and as understated as possible (painted green, minimalistic designed as much as they could.) Thanks for the trip and putting up with all the mud. I wondered if we were going to be entertained with you slipping in the mud at some point.
Loved the drone footage..
Mucky fun😁 Thank you!
Great video! Such fascinating terrain. I didn’t realize the black place was in that remote area. Sad to see the trash pile and to hear of oil pumps around, all tokens of our civilization. The rock display was wonderful, as were all the cool rocks you came upon.!
Wait, first I've seen that fan. Very cool. A 12 volt ceiling fan. Great idea.
Being a NM resident, this will definitely be a place to visit soon. Thank you.
Wow!! Gorgeous!
Loved it.
Loved the beautiful scenery in the beginning. Enjoyed the rocks too. Thanks for sharing
Loved the history. You left steps that will last years, too. :)
Great video and homage to Georgia O'Keefe! Thanks, Tristan.
Just stunning! Thank you
Thanks Tristan for taking us along in your adventures!! I enjoy the places you go.
I’ve been at Angel Peak twice and loved it. I did hike almost to the bottom of that canyon and enjoyed it.
Well that was a fun watch! Thank you guys for always putting out something to entertain us! Hope y'all have a great day!
Great place with nice history...thanks again..stay safe and keep going
No one knows how bad that mud can be. Unless they have been in it. Thanks for video
Great vodeo Tristan! Will definitely check that place out.
What a beautiful canyon, that does look like a great place to explore further. I loved learning about Georgia O'Keeffe's work in the area, and seeing all the different rocks. My pockets are frequently filled when I'm walking in nature.
Very neat place , can see why an artist would camp there 🏕
Great site!
Nice. Thank you for the trip.
Well done! Great video!
Loved seeing the cool rocks you found.
Reminded me of my childhood (1960's) when visiting family in NM. They were rock hounds, they called me a pebble puppy since I was a kid and loved hunting rocks too.
My uncle had a rock tumbling set up in his backyard. When he died they donated dozens of cigar boxes of tumbled rock to the college in Socorro. Wish I had at least one of those boxes. 😢
Really cool video
Wow. That view is amazing. I miss be out there and seeing the colors and vistas.
The Black Place, that is so cool. Now I have to go there.
Beautiful Video 😊
We love to rockhounding Too! It would have been very hard to walk away from that spot! Thanks again for being our eyes and ears, may your travels always be blessed.
What an absolutely stunning area!
Definitely worth a revisit.
What an interesting place.😮
Looking forward to this one. Angel peak is fantastic! Yes you don't want to go on that muddy road. Wow you got really muddy on that other road. I don't know, it's a bit mushy to walk on. I heard of Georgia O'Keefe. Love that spot where she painted the black plate. Definitely unique area. Thanks for sharing! The red stone looks like jasper. Barite nodules are cool looking! That was a nice display someone set out!
WOW what an amazing find. I would definitely make the flight out to NM and do Angel’s Peak.
Thanks for putting up with the mud and making this video, so interesting and a good warning for me not to do it in the wet season. I would have gotten stuck.
What a amazing planet ! ❤
That must be what I flew over one time and was amazed by how beautiful it was. It wasn't the right place for the Grand Canyon and didn't look like it anyway. I had no idea New Mexico had anything like that. Stunningly gorgeous from the air.
Beautiful footage, thank you for sharing!
Really great explorations amazing to be in the exact area of Georgia O'Keeffe!
Beautiful Place ⛰️ Love the music on this video. 🤩
Nice area to visit, sitting in Mississippi I got to see it. Thanks.
Oh my goodness that mud! Replicatingthat old photo and sharing the history is so cool. Also just love the barite nodules. Thanks for the info
Tristan, I really enjoyed the time you spent at Georgia O'Keefe's "Black Place". The scenery was beautiful and the rocks were quite interesting. Good episode.
Beautiful places! Your drone footage was amazing.
Your flexibility and knowing when to avoid unnecessary risk due to weather or other circumstances is admirable. Makes for a much more pleasant experience
Thank you for pointing out the Jasper. I've been finding that in my backyard thinking it was brick or clay.
I’ve quite enjoyed the New Mexico series so it would be great to see even more
Really nice badlands. Cool video.
Compelling set of sites in NM. Enjoyed it. Can’t blame you for being cautious with that degree of mud. Wow!
Stunning! I will be in this area in about a month. Might have to check it out!🙃
Thanks for taking us along on your journeys. Be safe.
Gallup, NM here. I'm looking forward to your other NM posts. You might enjoy Mount Taylor (Tsoodził), one of the other four sacred mountains for the Navajo. It's a dormant volcano along I-40 (mostly red mesa territory). Went snowshoeing there a couple of months ago. Another cool site is the El Morro National Monument. Very short hike, but cool history mingling Native petroglyphs with conquistador and pioneer carvings at a waterhole (a little touristy).
Thank you so much for the cool videos! Love the drone shots also!
Whenever I watch a detailed five-minute Tristan Escape video...I realize I'm overdue for a day trip near me...even though my SUV Rving shirt doesn't match my Chevy 4x4...T's point is to just get out there.
Thanks again Tristan! superb video
I love this place. We didn’t stay too long or hike there; like you, we went for the view. 😊
I was born and raised in Farmington not knowing what was around me amazes me. The rocks you were wondering if they were petrified wood are indeed petrified wood (the flat one for sure). My family would go petrified wood hunting south of Farmington west of the Bisti highway. Will have to go and check these areas out when I get back there.
Honestly... as you were showing the sensational video shots of the area... leading up to the 4:00 minute mark... I was thinking to myself how "EPIC" your close-up shots of Angel Peak are...
And just at THAT MOMENT... You, Tristan, used the descriptive adjective "Epic" to also describe the view! Wow...! ! ! How truly "Divine" your shot of Angel Peak came to be in your video! 🙏
