Just discovered your channel, great stuff. Glad to see Master and Commander getting some love - it's one of my all time favourite movies. So historically authentic and those action scenes are just stunning - the actors and extras were all taught to sail the ship (which was real) so in any shot the crew are actually performing their ship-related tasks). Probably the best sound effects/mixing of any film too - if you ever want to show off your surround sound system, this is the movie to listen to.

I really, really LOVED The Place Beyond the Pines. I found it on HBOMAX when I was bored one day during the pandemic I think!!?? I remember how impressed I was with Emory Cohen. Then, I realized he was Tony in Brooklyn. From that moment I became a real fan of Cohen. So talented. Also, Eva Mendes was so good in this. The Last Samurai is my favorite Tom Cruise film~ for me it's about a emotionally messed up & suffering soldier, who is shown who he really is by the Samurai. And, so glad to see Moon on the list! Sam Rockwell, one of my favorite character actors, deserves a ton of recognition for that film. And sooo many other good films on this list: Quiz Show, In Brudges, Castaway........and basically the whole dang list!
i am really embarrassed. thought I was commenting on the critical drinker's video praising "blue eye samurai". anyway i will check you out. I love discussing movies.
Rounders was great. After the great Talented Mr Ripley, Tom is dead to me. Tommy Tommy tommy Tommy, how's the peeping? I like Strange Days but it was unfortunately released the day or week OJ was freed. My fav underrated is the Last Picture Show. Pines with Gosling is not as good as Drive. Hateful Eight and all of Tarantino's derivative films since he lost his writing partner suck. Bruges was pretty good. Nothing very good from Cruise except Mission Impossible I. I guess Color of Money was pretty good. Best underrated scientific movie: The Incredible Shrinking Man. Reaves was good in the suspenseful 'The Watcher but the critics didn't like it. He turned down Watchman. Gritty and visually striking, Watchmen is a faithful adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel, but its complex narrative structure may make it difficult for it to appeal to viewers not already familiar with the source material. I will not be "watching", I have a hard time with non-source material in movies.
I think Uncut Gems is underrated. It’s not necessarily a hated movie but I don’t hear it much in discussion when referring to recent great movies. Maybe it’s not for everyone but I felt a rush, anxiety and excitement the whole time and I did not expect the ending at all it actually blew me away. Sandler had a spectacular performance also, he showcased some real range to his skills.
The Age Of Innocence is the most underrated movie for me, its incredible and top 5 Scorcese, and my favorite DDL performance. Dont be fooled thinking jts just a custome drama, It still is Very Scorcese with great flair.
The place beyond the pines was a hidden gem I stumbled across and it never escaped my mind. Love it so much, and Ryan gosling character really felt real to me and it's my favorite character of his behind the driver in drive
AWESOME list guys, sooo many of my favs are on this list, just about every time you mentioned a movie I said YES, and the others I'm gonna check out for sure!!!! I'm a runner and do hours every day, so listening to you guys was just great to help the kms go by, thanks so much!! I just wanna say that We Need to Talk About Kevin is decidedly less impressive when you know the book (a typical criticism I know). Yes the movie is extremely well made and the acting is outstanding, but the it's quite "black and white" compared to the book which is much much more nuanced with a mother who never wanted a baby in the first place and resented it from the outset and put all sorts of expectations on the baby to "improve" her marriage, AND a father who prefers to put his head in the sand rather than face and deal with reality!! Am looking forward to checking out more of your podcasts!!
The Blood of Heroes was powerful to me as a 10 year old wow! Rutger Hauer was always in some film you were watching at the time. SOrta like Liam Nielson the past 20 years, He was commanding and knew how to take the spotlight with little no emotion.
Samsara , Safety Nor Guaranteed, American Pop, Bomb The System, Kymatica, Fantastic Planet, The Great Beauty, Red Lights, Wisdom, Born Of Hope, The Hunt For Gollum, Celestine Prophecy, Layer Cake, Mobsters, Where The Buffalo Roam, Kumare, Tromeo & Juliet, Lucy, Revolver, Phone Booth, Daybreakers and The Negotiator bada bing that will keep you busy for another round of life.

A little pretentious bro...i have heard of like 5 of these...im 49 and love movies more than most. Just feels like your tryin pretty hard to be that guy.
A few off the top of my head. (In the "reactor" community, these are rare to non-existent) In The Name of the Father (1993; Daniel Day Lewis, Emma Thompson) Salt (2010; Angelina Jolie, Liev Shreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor) The Commitments (1991; Dir. Alan Parker) Cop Land (1996; Stallone, Keitel, DeNiro, Liotta) Sleepers (1996; Brad Pitt, Jason Patrick, Minnie Driver, DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman) Wag The Dog (1997; DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman Conspiracy Theory (1997; Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, Patrick Stewart) Thunderheart (1992; Val Kilmer, Graham Greene)
Great list. A lot of these I havent even seen so I will make sure to check them out. For me the most underrated movies would be Blood Diamond (Edward Zwick), A bittersweet life (Kim Jee Woon) and Remember the Titans (Boaz Yakin)
Love, love, love "Quiz Show," which unfortunately got lost among the great 1994 films, one of the best years in cinema. Nominated for Best Picture along with Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Shawshank Redemption.
Go back and watch Mean Streets. The single cam shot in the bar, which was perfected in Goodfellas, the bar fight scene which goes uncomforably too long like the I amuse you scene in Goodfellas, the incrediblde music used in Mean Streets, which was perfected in Goodellas. The movie is clealy Goodfellas light done almost 10 years earlier. People need to watch that movie!!!
That Nolan/Scorsese poll you sited was ridiculous. It doesn't have anything to do with kids these days. That has to be an online poll and Nolan fans are the most online fans of any director ever, it's like Ron Paul back in the day lol
Re: David Bowie and Knighthoods: David Bowie was offered both a CBE and a Knighthood but turned both down saying in 2003. "I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that," he told the Sun in 2003
I a SO Glad that I found Your channel!!! I Absolutely Love Your Unbiased and Fun Content!!! I'm a new subscriber n have been Binge Watching Your Videos! 😊...Wish You Both All the Best, can't wait to check out some of the films that I have not seen! 🤓
A History of Violence is based on a comic by John Wagner and Vince Locke. Also, the Watchmen show is really great. It's a new story, told in the same world, built upon the fallout of the events of the comic. It's not based directly on the movie, and doesn't have that same 3rd act controversial change.
Great show! Thank you both for shedding light on some older films that shouldn't be forgotten! Michael Mann's first film is actually a made for TV film called "The Jericho Mile." Absolutely wonderful picture starring Peter Strause. Check it out... if you can find it! Then my favorite underrated film is "The Ninth Configuration." No other film like it!!!!
The 1st film I seen in 3D was Metal Storm and OMG I am a sfi-fi nut and I didn't actually classify myself this early in like yet but the feeling I had when this movie was new and incredibly unknown too! No kids at school had it on they're radar and didn't see commercials or any promotion at all. AT Lunch I was practically acting out all the scenes and adopted the nickname "Tommy Stories" from then on lol.... Seriously guys watch this film you won't regret it.
Billiards is a sport. Go try playing it for 12 to 16 hours like what happens at tournaments and you'll find out pretty quick that it takes endurance along with the skill to do it. I love the tip of the cap to Master and Commander. Such a fantastic film that I've seen at least 30 times. It's a go to when I'm bored and want something on in the background. The soundtrack is fantastic also. It didn't do well at the box office because it was doing battle with The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions along with Return of the King. A tragic case of bad timing.
Jake Speed was one of my favorite Low Budget "B" Film... Strangely I could tell the difference in terms of production at 9' years old. This movie however was amazing and John Hurt was an excellent arch criminal and long before V or Lord of the rings. put this one on your watch list and power off your phones guys. Thank me later!
Bowie: He refused a CBE in 2000 and later a knighthood in 2003. The 68-year-old reportedly explained: “I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that. I seriously don't know what it's for. It's not what I spent my life working for."27 Jan 2023
@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ BUT... There is a genre of film that you left out, although I spot you Fruitvale station. You COULD also put Eve's Bayou, Soul Food, Best Man 1 and 2, Dope, Fresh, and Charm City. "Black movies" that don't center around being black in America but rather just stories about black people in America. Check em out. Holla at me.
Man, I'm finding I really sync up with you guys in terms of films that I watch all the time and are underrated/under-reviewed. Also, agree on Ready Player One, very watchable, you're rooting for the characters who are not one dimensional --- and it's a decent cautionary tale for today's video game centric audience. It's important to live in the real world...
Usually these sorts of lists are just 'movies basically everyone has seen', i'm happy to say that about half of these I have not seen yet, and in some cases never heard of. Even better is that of the other half that I have watched, I love them all, so odds are that means the rest are going to be good.
I would pick Christopher Nolan over Martin Scorcese too, i'm just not really a Scorcese fan at all. I prefer the original Van Heflin and Glenn Ford version of 3:10 to Yuma, over the Russell Crowe, Christian Bale version. I also love Rounders, Nightcrawler, Edge of Tomorrow, The Color of Money, In Bruges, The Last Samurai & Match Point. I have not seen Moon, Sorcerer, Shelter, Ready Player One, The Stars, Warrior & The Northman. 12.01 (1993) with Jonathan Silverman, Helen Slater & Martin Landau is my 2nd favourite Groundhog day type film, after Edge of Tomorrow.
I'd like to recommend a film in the category of "most underrated film in a franchise". And that franchise is Godzilla. Did you know there's a Godzilla movie with kung-fu fighting, katana-wielding, cloaking, teleporting, motorcycle-riding superheroes? Look up a trailer for GODZILLA: FINAL WARS. You'll see very quickly that the creators of this movie wanted to make a living Anime with Godzilla in it. When Godzilla isn't on screen it feels like watching Final Fantasy: Advent Children.
I seen Thief as a kid and wow' its as high powered as it gets! When Belushi died I was torn! I liked him in every film I watched at that time as a kid. We went to the show often and I seen a lot of mature stuff for being just a kid because my dad wasn't trusted out of the house alone lol' SO even when grounded I got to go to the Movies! The best feeling I ever had at the movies was opening day for Leathal Weapon 1 oh man....... It was epic!
Get Rumble Fish on there lads. The Outsiders and Rumble Fish are a great double header. I agree with pretty much all of this list. Apocolypto is the best chase move ever committed to screen. Warrior? WOW! Battling brothers never get’s old. Color of Money made me and the lads all want to be pool hustlers (Some of us did). I’m getting old now and I’m forgetting the list as I write this. 😆 I’d stick Near Dark on there too. Also I think Tron Legacy was the last mainstream Hollywood movie involving a positive Father and Son story. Okay one more…. I pick Rob Roy over Braveheart any day. 😁
Sorcerer! Nice list. - I think Minority Report and Edge of Tomorrow are lauded (but not Oblivion)? Great choices with Nightcrawler (acting), Brick (writing, acting) Apocalypto (directing), In Bruges (writing, acting), Crimson Tide (acting, writing - script was doctored by Tarentino). Is Watchman really underrated already? I thought it had appreciation. -You guys really dug up a gem with Sorcerer (directing, acting) - the film itself was a Practical nightmare imitating art, worth a show. -For your preference to the postmodern era check out The Fisher King, Let the Right One In, City of God, Fear & Loathing...Mulholland Drive, Princess Mononoke, Sexy Beast, Old Boy...alsoSecret Life of Walter Mitty, Monsters Inc., and Contact. -The great fault with Tenet is the acting - imagine DeCaprio in it.Now you see it. -Under the Skin lacked in the second and had no third act. Great introduction of ideas, good acting, fun effects - then its over... -Why not give some more insight into why the films are great, ex. directorial expression, craft approach of actors, what is great with the writing, achievements in effects - especially practical, and of course cinematography.... this would be better than relating more story=spoilers. Why not go deeper into films of earlier decades? -Cure is a new one for me - appeciate the recommendation.
@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ it's lighter fare, he had offered something reflective and just outstanding use of location rather than the usual romantic comedy tropes.
The Kingdom (07') directed by Peter Berg has an all time cast with incredible stunts and action that is never talked about I was hoping it would be on this list
I’m half in and predominantly they’re just talking about underrated popular films. The Salton Sea Thursday Thoroughbreds Neon Demon A Ghost Story Dolemite Is My Name Black Dynamite I Don’ Belong In This World Anymore and so many more.
Observe and Report! ....So god damn funny but hella dark. Seth Rogan, Ray Liota, Michael Pena, Anna Faris and Danny Mcbride Peanut Butter Falcon ...Amazing! Rushmore The Royal Tenenbaums Also, cannot wait for the second act of DUNE!!!!
The Assassin of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is probably the most underrated film ever. No one talks about it. Robert Deakins did the cinematography and it's mostly accurate to the real life story. Every actor killed it too. It's a beautiful and tragic film
The ones where we disagree: Green Room. Relatively certain there's no such thing as anti-Nazi speed metal. At any rate, it talespins into the ground the moment he's epically ... nay, COSMICALLY stupid enough to stick his arm through that door. Ready Player One: Mailed in by Spielberg as a gun for hire. The book was so much better. First Blood. It's ankle-deep violence porn in light of oh, a hundred other Viet Nam related movies that didn't reduce their lead to a inexplicably pumped up and roided out ABC movie-of-the-week cliche. It's an action movie with so PTSD tacked on. Watchmen. If you read and understood the comic, you recognize it as absolute superficial garbage only a wanabe Ridley Scott hack (without the talent, narrative ability, vision, story sense or track record) like Zack Snyder could produce. He has never made anything resembling a classic or even a thoroughly watchable movie. He understood none of the characters in Watchmen, just like the rest of his DC work. Anyone who has ever referred to him as a visionary must be joking and does not know the meaning of the word. Kubrick, Kurosawa, Los Bros Coen, Godard, innaritu, Antonioni, Scott - these are visionaries. By comparison, Snyder is a cinematic footnote and quite possibly the single worst director to ever be handed a multi-million dollar contract, aside from Karyn Kusama.
The films of Swedish director Lukas Moodysson are really underrated and not really talked about at all. These three are his best films: F*cking Åmål (Show Me Love) Tillsammans (Together) Lilja 4-Ever
Good list. I think for example In Bruges isn’t underrated, it gets a lot of hype from movie people. The Guard is a better movie and gets very little love from anyone

i am really embarrassed. thought I was commenting on the critical drinker's video praising "blue eye samurai". anyway i will check you out. I love discussing movies.
@@michaellemos6053 thanks hahaha
Gosling is in 3 super under rated films. The Pines, drive, and Only God Forgives
🤌🤌
I would've said Half Nelson too.
@@paddaman2003 also that movie where him and Michael Pitts kill that girl to see if they can get away with it. Sandra Bullock is in it. So good
The Age Of Innocence is the most underrated movie for me, its incredible and top 5 Scorcese, and my favorite DDL performance.
Dont be fooled thinking jts just a custome drama, It still is Very Scorcese with great flair.
So good
“Fearless” with Jeff Bridges. Best plane crash ever!! But a great list
Romeo is Bleeding is one of Gary Oldman's finest. Super cool twist in the middle too.
The Blood of Heroes was powerful to me as a 10 year old wow! Rutger Hauer was always in some film you were watching at the time. SOrta like Liam Nielson the past 20 years, He was commanding and knew how to take the spotlight with little no emotion.
True Believer James Woods was really good! El Salvador too, anything with the man was serious and had you glued to the screen!
🙌

I love Buffalo 66. My ex and I loved it. We used to say don't start evil...
A little pretentious bro...i have heard of like 5 of these...im 49 and love movies more than most. Just feels like your tryin pretty hard to be that guy.
@@flowshine74 Trust me, most of them aren't artsy films at all. Just a lot of horror and comedy movies that deserve a LOT more love and attention.
great episode boys! Copland, Bad lieutenant (1992), Thirteen lives are a few of my picks
13 Lives is AMAZING
Copland. Yes. Nice.
Ridiculous cast of talent AND star power in Cop Land....yet no love. 😐 Similarly... .Sleepers (1996)
"Newsies" is the most underrated musical ever. It's so fun and interesting, and Christian Bale CRUSHES it.
A few off the top of my head. (In the "reactor" community, these are rare to non-existent)
In The Name of the Father (1993; Daniel Day Lewis, Emma Thompson)
Salt (2010; Angelina Jolie, Liev Shreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor)
The Commitments (1991; Dir. Alan Parker)
Cop Land (1996; Stallone, Keitel, DeNiro, Liotta)
Sleepers (1996; Brad Pitt, Jason Patrick, Minnie Driver, DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman)
Wag The Dog (1997; DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman
Conspiracy Theory (1997; Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, Patrick Stewart)
Thunderheart (1992; Val Kilmer, Graham Greene)
Great list. A lot of these I havent even seen so I will make sure to check them out.
For me the most underrated movies would be Blood Diamond (Edward Zwick), A bittersweet life (Kim Jee Woon) and Remember the Titans (Boaz Yakin)
💯💯
Love, love, love "Quiz Show," which unfortunately got lost among the great 1994 films, one of the best years in cinema. Nominated for Best Picture along with Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Shawshank Redemption.
100%
Go back and watch Mean Streets. The single cam shot in the bar, which was perfected in Goodfellas, the bar fight scene which goes uncomforably too long like the I amuse you scene in Goodfellas, the incrediblde music used in Mean Streets, which was perfected in Goodellas. The movie is clealy Goodfellas light done almost 10 years earlier. People need to watch that movie!!!

5 Movies I wish people would talk about more
1) The Talented Mr. Ripley
2) A Time To Kill
3) Raising Arizona
4) Fade To Black
5) Shallow Grave
Ripley is a personal favorite!
Sorcerer is just making me think of the wages of fear.
"Match Point" (a Woody Allen film) IS spectacular!! Very close in concept to the book "American Tragedy" and the movie that was made from the book
🙏
That Nolan/Scorsese poll you sited was ridiculous. It doesn't have anything to do with kids these days. That has to be an online poll and Nolan fans are the most online fans of any director ever, it's like Ron Paul back in the day lol
Re: David Bowie and Knighthoods: David Bowie was offered both a CBE and a Knighthood but turned both down saying in 2003. "I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that," he told the Sun in 2003
🙌
I a SO Glad that I found Your channel!!! I Absolutely Love Your Unbiased and Fun Content!!! I'm a new subscriber n have been Binge Watching Your Videos! 😊...Wish You Both All the Best, can't wait to check out some of the films that I have not seen! 🤓
THANK YOU!
Thank you!!
On it 🫡
Billiards is a sport.
Genuinely had no idea Gosling had directed anything. Gotta watch it now!
Kevin Spacey was excellent as Gerty in Moon. Definitely an underrated gem.
This is a great list. Movies from many eras, mad respect.
Thank you!
Where can I find the full list? I would like to watch all the one I haven't seen yet to see what iv been missing out on.
Appreciate it!
The Color of Money is so good, my favorite Scorsese I think its much better than something like after hours or taxi driver.
Dude thats awesome i love the place beyond the pines, its one of my favorites and i think the hateful 8 is amazing
🙌
Usually these sorts of lists are just 'movies basically everyone has seen', i'm happy to say that about half of these I have not seen yet, and in some cases never heard of. Even better is that of the other half that I have watched, I love them all, so odds are that means the rest are going to be good.
Red Heat: Jim Belushi is a wildman! Arnold is classic in this very not so celebrated gem!
I'm a movie fanatic and I normally watch these lists to hate watch but you guys are outstanding all of these movies good
Thank you!
Green Room is such a good underrated movie. I also love In Bruges. You guys need to learn how to pronounce Imogen though that was triggering lol
I love Thief, watch it as a prequel to Drive and blow your mind.
“The Drop”
I seen Thief as a kid and wow' its as high powered as it gets! When Belushi died I was torn! I liked him in every film I watched at that time as a kid. We went to the show often and I seen a lot of mature stuff for being just a kid because my dad wasn't trusted out of the house alone lol' SO even when grounded I got to go to the Movies! The best feeling I ever had at the movies was opening day for Leathal Weapon 1 oh man....... It was epic!
Love Place beyond the Pines. Maybe a little overly ambitious with the sons but that's why I like it. Didn't hold back and I cared about the characters
Thanks for all the recommendations boys. My Letterboxd watchlist is getting too long lmao
Excellent haha
Underrated Films :
The Hitcher (1986) Dead Man (1995)
Midnight Run (1988) L.A. Confidential (1997)
True Romance (1993) The Machinist (2004)
Thank you for making this list. I have been looking for movies to watch 🍿
🙏
nightcrawler is like Jakes best movie. very great list of flicks. i still need to watch a place beyond the pines.
Sad I missed this podcast, In Bruges is my favorite movie of all time
🫡🫡
Sorcerer!
Amazing 🙌 seen all of those except Walter Mitty
We go very in depth in our other episodes if you haven’t seen them!
@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ it's lighter fare, he had offered something reflective and just outstanding use of location rather than the usual romantic comedy tropes.

The Salton Sea
Thursday
Thoroughbreds
Neon Demon
A Ghost Story
Dolemite Is My Name
Black Dynamite
I Don’ Belong In This World Anymore
and so many more.
"A History of Violence" is based upon a comic book.
13 Days is a Great Movie that works as a kind of sequel to Oppenheimer
Observe and Report! ....So god damn funny but hella dark. Seth Rogan, Ray Liota, Michael Pena, Anna Faris and Danny Mcbride
Peanut Butter Falcon ...Amazing!
Rushmore
The Royal Tenenbaums
Also, cannot wait for the second act of DUNE!!!!
The Assassin of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is probably the most underrated film ever. No one talks about it. Robert Deakins did the cinematography and it's mostly accurate to the real life story. Every actor killed it too. It's a beautiful and tragic film
100%
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai needs to be mentioned!!!
So good!
Moon is absolutely incredible. No one I know has seen it, all I do is recommend it

Not here 🤣
Here
Great list! So many of the movies I enjoy.
🙌
Master and Commander is one of the best films ever made. So underrated
🙏🙏
We just didn’t add it because it received so much award’s recognition
The ones where we disagree:
Green Room. Relatively certain there's no such thing as anti-Nazi speed metal. At any rate, it talespins into the ground the moment he's epically ... nay, COSMICALLY stupid enough to stick his arm through that door.
Ready Player One:
Mailed in by Spielberg as a gun for hire.
Damn I thought “Midnight Run” was the movie version of Frampton Comes Alive (if you get it you get it)
😂🙏🏻🙏🏻
These are must owns in every movie collection.
Why is _We Need To Talk About Kevin_ named _The Stars_ in the timestamp?
Not sure! Accident 🤣
The films of Swedish director Lukas Moodysson are really underrated and not really talked about at all.
These three are his best films:
F*cking Åmål (Show Me Love)
Tillsammans (Together)
Lilja 4-Ever
🙌
Good list. I think for example In Bruges isn’t underrated, it gets a lot of hype from movie people. The Guard is a better movie and gets very little love from anyone
@@JayRiemenschneider for sure
