I finally snagged one and am awaiting it in the mail. I purchased a basic model 940 for my buddy two years ago and have been jealous of it for years. I saw this one shortly before purchasing it for him and decided one day I'd buy it. Finally did. Great video as it was one of the last videos I watched before committing to that steeper $267 price.
Quick protip: Email Benchmade on their website and say you broke the pocket clip on your 810 Contego. They'll send you a deep carry clip and 3 screws that will fit the 940-1. I did this the day before I ordered my 940-1 and it came in about the same time. Free. Fits perfectly.
@@Voltechs Yep called in told him I've read that they have deep carry clips and how I can get one he said $5 if you're looking for a replacement, but they do replace them for free up to twice a year if you damage a clip. Didn't feel like lying to the guy and telling him I damaged mine.
Diamond stones are great for any super steel. You can get the diamond stones like dmt or on a system like kme or lansky. The diamond will make a big difference as it sharpens super steels faster than natural or Synthetic stones
I own both the 940 & 940-1 and like them a lot. I also own a couple Mini-Grip's that I EDC quite a bit as well. I'm looking at getting titanium deep carry clips on Ebay to match the purple and blue on both 940's respectively at about $25-$30 each. Like you I love my Spydies too and own several including the PM & PM2. Thanks for the great video!
good video.the c f and s90v steel is a big step up from standard 940 for sure.as for the thumb stub access you could remedy that with sand paper and a dowel. thanks to your video there will be a cf 940 in my pocket in the near future.thanks for the video.
Glad to hear the video was helpful. Very true about sanding a thumb groove for easy access to the thumb-stud. I just like the original lines too much and might hit the line that accentuates the bolster area. However, I put some custom blue G-10 scales on it, and may try that. Thanks for watching.
nice video i brought one mine is 274 of the first production and am surprised how much i really love it. one point i would make and dont know if its the steel or stone wash or both the blade cleans up great and seems to resit oil and smudges. the knife is deff a step up from the old 940 may be the best EDC production knife. i say this as a lefty as i pass on a lot of knives that are right handed biased.
Thanks for watching, and I'm glad you enjoy the 940 as much as I do! Whether you're lefty or need to use your "off-hand", the Axis lock makes it all possible to open and close the knife. Benchmade doesn't get everything right (no Manufacturer does), but they sure came close with their locking mechanism.
TBH an assist is totally unnecessary on a 940. I have a few assisted benchmades and the 940 is just as fast to deploy or faster. Plus you have the added benefit of much easier one handed closing. They are absolutely lightning quick
Awesome review man. Only problem is that now i need to buy yet another 940 model. This will make #8. They are just that awesome. Favorite edc ever by a long shot If this thing can compete with my titanium handled special edition or my old school red handle ill be thrilled Cant wait to get my hands on one of these
S30V is great. I generally use an Apex Edge Pro to sharpen my knives, and with it I'm able to easily put an absurdly sharp edge on the S90V (or anything for that matter). I also find that I need to sharpen the S30V more frequently if used on things other than paper, than I do the S90V. For most EDC applications, S30V is more than enough though. Thanks for watching and for the feedback.
Great video! The 940 was the first knife I spent a decent amount of money on. Fast forward years later to the 940-1... I had to have it, #478/750! I love the weight reduction and inclusion of an s90v blade. The standoff pins instead of the back-spacer is great for cleaning. I miss the grip of the aluminum, but all things considered, this is far superior IMHO. As an aside, most of my Benchmades require some breaking in, followed by a loctite treatment. This is the only one that has remained solid after hundreds of flicks. Is yours the same?
Thanks and I agree with you about the superiority of the new materials and design. With further research I've found that the quality control with the 940-1 is about the same as the other 940's, as many of the blades are off centered initially. Also, I find that my pivot-pin has loosened very slightly after opening it close to 1,000 times. As you've said...BM does usually need a lock-tight treatment. I do a "spa-treatment" on most of my knives, also blade centering, lock-tight, edge re-profiling and many other things are done to perfect the blade. With this knife, there wont be much to do. It's AWESOME! Enjoy yours!
i really like the open back design and spacers compared to the back spacer on the original but i can't believe the ends of the scale screws protrude through the liner on the inside.
Custom Edge Works oh that is good! you were able to find ones with the same screw heads so its nice and flush with the handle? i am ordering a sebenzna soon but i also really want to have something with an axis lock and this was really one of my favorites. How is the blade centering on your copy? that is the only other thing i am concerned about. The Apostle P had 3 840-1's and the blade was not centered on any of them.
Yes. Found screws that fit perfectly. Most of the 940-1's had centering problems due to improper tolerances. It really bothered me and I ended up getting aftermarket custom scales (shown in another one of my videos). Now centering is perfect!
Custom Edge Works thanks for the info. I will check that out. Seems like that is replacing a lot of an already expensive knife, though! do you know if there has been any improvement in later runs of the 940-1?
***** Very true. I'm picky and really like good blade centering...but it's such a great EDC option...I'd tale it the way it came out of box and still be happy. Not sure if they fixed the centering in later runs or not though.
I mentioned it on your emissary video but ill post it here as well. Check out sooner state knives. They sell these for $225. Still pricey but better than just about anywhere else ive seen them Again. Great review
Yeah I hear ya, but that's a good problem to have in my opinion haha. Out of the roughly 100 folding knives I have, I have 2 940's. The other is an aluminum handled one that I did an acid stone-wash on the blade, and am getting the handle cerakoted. Such an awesome knife that's plenty versatile! I'm jealous that you have the red one! I scour ebay and everywhere else looking for one. So that's why I'm making my own. Thanks for the Soonerstate reference, and thanks for watching. I've been really busy lately, but will look to get a few new reviews up shortly.
The clip on this knife reads Benchmade USA, From what I've heard if you talk to a Benchmade rep the real Benchmade knives only read Benchmade. The fake ones read Benchmade USA. If I'm mistaken please let me know
Well I guess I will find out just how good the BM warranty service is, just got my new 940-1 in the mail and the blade is touching the scale on the clip side.
+Jay Culley That the most common issue with these knives. It's easy to fix yourself, but I'm sure they'll be happy to center the blade for you. Hope that works out for you!
I worked with it for an hour, adjusting all the screws, all I managed to do was strip one. I do love the blade though! The lady at BM said they may just replace it.
+Jay Culley I've fixed my centering issues by polishing the pivot, washers and where the washers contact the blade with 3000 grit sandpaper. You can do the same for the axis lock contact points if you have grittiness there.
nice knife, what do you think of the mini grip and 707? I like em and want to get a customized mini grip. You could dremel the 940 so you can hit the thumb stud faster
707 is awesome. Check out my review on it. I have a few full-size and mini grips and I love them! They're all customized and I may need to do a review on those next. I think that they feel a little better in hand, but not as good as the 707 or 940 in pocket. That's why I'm so stoked about the 940...it's good in hand AND in pocket. Super light with a good sized blade. Thanks for watching!
S30v may be a great steel but it don't cost $100.00s per unit to use in a knife !!! That's why I ordered the clone ( the real one is a cnc clone to ) probably has d2 steel very good steel ! Might be hollow ground better to ( maybe not still ok ) ! Same size 2.6 oz s solid carbon scales !
This knife was my gateway drug to knife collecting. I MUCH prefer my Reate and ZT's to this knife for EDC. I find the 940 a bit light and flimsy. My Rockstead CHI arrives tomorrow.. ApostleP has some interesting observations about S90 and the 940-1.
How would you rate Hitachi white steel number 1 when used as a core with a softer stainless steel as a laminate compared to s90v? Could you compare the edge retention, cutting ability, and strength?
I don't have any experience with that steel. I've heard it's very good and comparable to their blue steel in some ways...but all I've heard is that it's uncommon, expensive....but a very consistent steel when it comes to the metallurgy. I still think S90V is a great steel for EDC purposes, but I've found M390 (and all variants) to be my most preferred EDC steel at this point. I have EDC knives that I've used extensively that consist of over 20 different steels, and M390 seems to be the best balanced in performance vs price I've found. Many great steels these days...but I'm very curious about the white steels. The blue steels are very good...but I don't think I'd choose over S90V or S110V.
Nothing in performance alone. Under normal usage, I find them to both cut equally as good. The S90V has more vanadium and will cut slightly more aggressively.....but again nothing I've noticed in normal use. I think that the M390 is just as tough, sharpens easier, takes a keener edge, has more corrosion resistance and all at a lower cost. Either steel is a total win though!
I've been convinced from what I've read lately about the heat treat being maybe the most critical part of the formula. Meaning a sub par steel with an awesome heat treat by an expert will perform better than a great steel with a sub par heat treat. What are your thoughts about this?
I have had the same experience. I've often had the same steel perform differently due to one having a better heat treatment. That being said, anytime I'm comparing blade steels, I do so under the pretense that said steels have proper heat-treatments. I first look at the steel compositions, then the maker.
I love the carbon fiber and the 940 design. However, every 940-1 I've looked at have a dull & slightly off centered blade. The screws stick through the other side of the carbon fiber scales and the spine of the blade is cut unevenly at the point of the blade. This might be why the blades seem slightly off centered. Would absolutely love to buy this knife, but fit & finish seems to be lacking for it's price point.
This is the fake version of this knife. The clip is way off . The spacers are not the correct color. This knife actually weighs in at 2.6 ozs its heavier than the true 940-1. If you paid over 40 for that knife then you over paid. The quality is not that of the true version.
Michael Feagans not necessarily, benchmade has been experiencing quality control as of late from what I have heard. Also this knife in the review and every real 940 I have seen has screws that stick through the grips. I have heard many people complain of off centered blades.
That's a beautiful 940, but for the life of me I just can't understand Benchmades decision with the pocket clip. This a a low numbers special production run version and it still comes with their basic mass production pocket clip. I know it works very well, but wtf!?! Come on Benchmade, this version of the 940 should at least come with the split body arrowhead pocket clip. If you are gonna go this far to give it some "class," then do it right!
+Don C If you talk to customer service they will send you a different clip if you prefer for free from what I've heard w/ people wanting deep carry clips for other benchmade knives.
+hodnett53 Oh yeah, I know. I have actually reached my free pocket clip limit for the year! I convert all my BM's to the polished deep carry clip. Execpt for my 903, 908 & 915, BM set them up correctly from the factory.
I was recently made aware of a channel named "Men Arms" who is stealing videos putting his name on it calling it his own and this video is on his list of knife reviews. He's also stolen videos from everyday tactical vids wingman 115 and alfieaesthetics.
I love this knife but this knife is wayyy overpriced. I bought a sprint run (more expensive right off the start) manix 2 with the composite steel CPM 154/S90V and carbon fiber handles for $239 at blade hq. They are wanting $267 for this knife???
The opening stud is horribly designed. This isn't worth 200 bucks. Waste of money. Plus - the ugliest knife and blade shape I've ever seen. Don't like the handle either.
It is much easier to simply activate the lock switch with your thumb & forefinger and then lightly flick the blade out with a mild wrist motion. The blade snaps open very easily into locked position. So you don't really need the stud at all.
to expensive for edc and even the benchmade 10750 a budget knife by comparison has the handle indent you like - a fail a she she poo knife - a show knife - to expensive and will not do more than other high quality pocket knives
That’s why we open it with the AXIS lock and a lil wrist flick. More fun, too.
Nice video...been looking for a 940 variant and you just convinced me on the 940-1. Love the way your video shows how smooth the action is!
+Nicholas Kieltyka Awesome! Happy to help and thanks for watching!

Voltechs I was gonna say this too. I emailed them and said I’d love a deep carry for my grip and they were super nice about it

20 minutes of you...? HELL NO!
The opening stud is horribly designed. This isn't worth 200 bucks. Waste of money. Plus - the ugliest knife and blade shape I've ever seen. Don't like the handle either.
lucky you don't have one then!
It is much easier to simply activate the lock switch with your thumb & forefinger and then lightly flick the blade out with a mild wrist motion. The blade snaps open very easily into locked position. So you don't really need the stud at all.
Igor RS - Are u stupid?
China clones of this knife for $70
Mark Gray - buy America !!! Fuck China..
Not the perfect edc! The perfect edc would have the perfect price . This is a highly over priced cnc clone edc !!!
Dale Carpenter CNC would be the clone
