The origin of this ritual is a prayer to a deity, which was done as a way to plead for the rain to fall over the crops in times of drought. Ancient and universal, this fertility dance is plagued with symbolism.
Each one of the flyers or voladores represents one of the four cardinal points. The caporal, the character playing the drum and the flute, is the center of the Earth. The outfits reference the plumage of birds and the ribbons are an analogy of the rainbow that comes after the rain.
The flyers descent symbolizes the rain falling. Each hand motion of the caporal signals a specific acrobacy that flyers must execute. In ancient times, even picking and chopping down the tree that serves as the pole was a ritual in itself, that required praying and asking the forest for forgiveness.

That was so awesome! Thanks for showing that. 45 years ago I saw Los Voladores de Papantla in their ancient home of El Tajin. It is a spectacular ruin of an ancient city built by the Totonac people and predated the Aztec. When I saw them we sat on the pyramids and their dancing pole was in the middle of the square (zocalo). Los Voladores entered the zocalo from a path in the hills dancing and singing. The lead dancer who spins the device, danced on the center of the pole and played an ocarina and a drum. Parrots from the surrounding jungle came out and flew in circles around his head. As the dancers came down from the top I was mesmerized with the power and beauty of the performance. Afterwards I asked one of the young dancers what was the significance of the dance and he told me it symbolized how the Totonacan people came to the earth. The city of Papantla is beautiful too. In those days all the campesinos dressed in white including white sandals. In Papantla, the smell of vanilla was everywhere and I came home with vanilla bean crosses for my sweetheart. Great memories. Muchas gracias India.
