Ligo is an annual Latvian festival celebrating the summer solstice. We travel somewhere closer to nature, drink beer, eating Ligo cheese, listen and dance to folk music like this one, make big free fires. Also big part of tradition is when a man and a woman are going together in the forest to find a fern flower. They never find it but what they do find is love. So if someone will ask you to help him with finding a fern flower you need to know that it is an euphemism for sex.

The song is about how on the summer solstice women turn into witches and werewolves, and that the night belongs to them! Super witchy vibes

The name "Līgo" is from the word "līgoties" that means swaying in the rhythm of music or when the wind blows, then grass or trees sway in the wind gust. As it is the selebration - people are swaying and dancingin. Most of the folk songs sang in this solstice celebration contain this word.

Midsummer is the Latvian annual holiday celebrated during the summer solstice, the shortest night and longest day.
The day before Midsummer is called Herbal Day, its evening is called Midsummer Night, the night is Midsummer Night and the next day is Midsummer Day.
The national holiday Midsummer Day is June 24, a few days after the summer solstice.
Part of the Latvian diaspora in Siberia - 19th century descendants of Latvian colonists celebrate John's Day on July 6 and 7.
It is the largest and richest tradition of the Latvian nation, celebrated by all generations and all groups of society.
Historically, Heritage Day is associated with summer solstice, but due to the mismatch of dates, solstice celebrations are sometimes separated from Midsummer's Day.
One of the most important traditions of Midsummer is weaving wreaths.
For women, the wreaths are woven from flowers, while for men, the wreaths are usually made of oak leaves.
Witchcraft is often associated with the cult of fertility and the prevention of adversity.

I watched your four videos on Tautumeitas this morning. I am a Latvian born in the US. They are one of my favorite groups and I actually had the pleasure to see them in concert this fall and was able to meet them as well. They are a truly amazing Latvian group with deep roots in the Latgalian region in eastern part of Latvia. They have several songs which are sung in the Latgalian dialect. Just wanted to reply back to let you know that I enjoyed your videos and was amazed at how well you pronounced the words. I believe you already got the answers to your questions in the other comments, so I just wanted to say thanks for posting. You did a great job!

Līgo is a lyrical sing along for the folk/traditional songs people sing for the summer saulstis or Jāņi in latvian. Līgo is basically a summer exclamation of celebrations(not necessarily joy or happiness, could also be a celebration of survived hardship)(other season celebrations different ones). Jāņi is a national holiday celebrated by almost everyone. Sources: me a Latvian

Adatāmi jumti, jumti - "roofs with needles", but in traditional song grammar. This is a bit chant song :)
If you like percussion and want to hear latvian style percussion listen to "AUĻI" compositions.

Hi, I was so glad to see your reaction video. I'm french canadian and have an interest in folk music, culture and traditional clothing, but I'm also feminist and anti-racist. So, it's important to me that folk culture don't value archaic views on women, men and nonbinary people but progressive ways to keep, share and improve our cultures. I know that some of these folk movements are link to racists views on society, so I was looking for reactions and comment from people from other cultures. I hope that we can all learn from each other cultures and aim for justice and equality. Long live to your channel!

Don't use google translate for latvian... :D it's a waste of time.
It's hard to translate what "līgo" means, caus there is no one version even in latvian, but it is related with summer, movement of the Sun and wariability of world itself, swinging, harmony, joy and so on.
