Eyyy, it's so awesome seeing the legendary Sam Waterston featured here! I love him so much, fell in love with his performance as Sol in _Grace and Frankie_ 🥰
I agree with all of Mr Waterston picks but the one that surprised and delighted me was Fanfan la Tulipe . As someone who's first language was French and who only started to speak English in her late teens I was raised on these old black and white French movies on television and they occupy a special place in my heart.
I don’t know the French film, and I loved Kind Hearts, but Lawrence is definitely the winner for me. It’s brilliant and exquisite in every way from the first note of music to the credits, and Peter O’Toole should have gotten the Oscar for that stunning performance, hands down!
He's hugely intelligent but wears his learning lightly, he's funny, quirky, interesting, interested, kind, humane ... oh man I could go on and on. As Meryl Streep said 'we all remember the day we fell in love with our man Sam', and that's how I always think of him.
Two more things stuck with me through the years. That gorgeous theme and O'Toole's character. As a teen I bought a big fat biography of Lawrence bc of that film.
I remember like yesterday going with my parents at age 8 to see Lawrence of Arabia. Those desert shots inspired me to write Ode To The Desert an original poem praising the beauty of the desert and leading to my first time being accused of plagiarism for writing far above my grade level.. By my own mother!
While Sam Waterston is in one of my top 6 Movies, he was in the movie "Hopscotch" with Walter Matthau, Ned Beatty and Glenda Jackson. It's an awesome film that I could watch daily and never get bored.
Interesting that he is unaware of the plots of the two English speaking films. Alec Guinness does indeed play the roles of the different victims but the murderer is played by Dennis Price. Great film. TE Lawrence was a British officer but he ended up trying to secure independence for the Arabs not gain more territory for the British Empire.
I'm with Sam. Impossible to pick one. But high on the list are Time of the Gypsies. Arrival. City of Lost Children I could go on all night. So much great art and so much more yet to be done.
My French & Canadian wife will freak about Sam's French pick. Anything L&O, & derivatives, from Agatha C./Poireaux to the Ozarks & co., my tv remote has been inaccessible for years
Don't tell me no one at The Late Show has seen "Kind Hearts and Coronets", surely one of the greatest comedies ever made? Because Sam Waterston (who was great in "Hannah and Her Sisters", another classic) makes a very basic mistake here. He says Alec Guinness murders his relatives to gain an inheritance (actually a royal title), but it's Dennis Price who dies that, not Guinness. I'm shocked.

Gonna cry when that ends……….
I simply adore him. Wish I could be more descriptive, but he’s one of the actors for whom I have a combined love for talent and family.
I agree. It's hard to put your finger on it precisely. He's just... Good... In every sense.

Mr. Waterston, I will never complain of any actor loving a French movie! I personally could watch Delicatessen once a month and never tire of it!!!!
