The left out May's best comment. Back in the studio James made the comment that when he finished the run and was headed back to the pit area that he thought he had slowed down to a crawl and was going to open the door when he realized he was still moving at 70 MPH.
James technically set the speed record, but it was then quickly broken by Bugatti's test driver. But for a brief moment, Captain Slow, Mr Slowly, was the fastest man in the world.
Captain Slow would then go on to hit 258mph at the same location in the Veyron SS. It was a new speed record for a production car, for about 20 minutes. Bugatti then put their test driver in the car and he 267mph. 😂
the video made by jason cammisa on it completely made me change my mind on it, its status may be overrated but the engineering and story behind absolutely not!
This was one of the first segments of Top Gear I ever saw back in the day, and it's the one that really made me a fan of the show. I still think it's one of the best editing jobs they've ever done - it's all quite lighthearted and over the top, and yet manages to be pretty damn epic and just flat out cool when he hits max speed. Great stuff, this is what Top Gear does best. Well, this, and having three dowdy middle aged blokes shout at each other.
"We have two volunteers to test this car !" "Yeah, but we want the car back. And no headline about a celebrity dying in it". "Oh, Jamey May it is then."
Captain slow going fast was a running gag. It almost put him in the vampire jet dragster, but he was swapped out for Hammond late in production. Probably saved his life; he’s taller and less fit than Hammond, and doesn’t think he’d have made it.
This segment was one of the best segments of the whole show’s existence imo. They used Captain Slow to set the stage for what was about to unfold, the amazing camera angles, shots coupled with some amazing filters and precision high speed camera footage made this absolutely stunning to watch. Then the soundtrack of the Bugatti howling amongst Wojciech Kilar’s intense and haunting Dracula makes this segment a true masterpiece of television hands down 💯💯
Really appreciate these HD versions finally being released. I think Hoovie and Ed especially need to wrap their Veyrons this colour. With the brown interior, it’s def my fav spec. Such a historical car
That line always reminds me of the moment when Jeremy yelled, “SPEEEEED AND POWER!” in the episode where they were in Africa and got stuck in the mud. I can’t remember the exact timestamp, but it's the episode featuring the BMW of Jeremy’s
That seems wrong. Clearly remember him smoking a cigarette at one of the behind the scenes youtube clips after the last special was shot and before their production company dissolved.
@@EinfachLuap well, technically it could be both right and wrong you know. There's nothing easier than to stop smoking - some people managed to do so 100 times
The production quality on this is fantastic. What an incredible achievement for James and Bugatti, was reminded of this after Bugatti broke another record with their Mistral.
The actual speed run was done in the dry. Most likely, those rain shots were done on a different day. But even with it dry, it still looks properly scary.
That's the great thing about the Veyron and why it's a technological achievement on the same level as Concorde. It's not just that it goes damned fast, it does so while carrying a fully kitted out luxury car and is relatively comfortable even at extreme speeds.
@@AdityaGirish There was an interview forever ago, where James was asked what it was like driving the Veyron at 400km/h. And he said "Quite lovely, actually. Which tells you just what a machine it truly is."
This episode was always the reason why I didn't like the nickname "Captain slow." James May was the one that they trusted to do this test, so clearly slow was not the right adjective, cautious probably should have been the word used.
I remembered watching this the 1st time. And in that original viewing it was more dramatic, the soundtrack goes kinda silent as James reached 407. That was an epic moment. It just puts you into perspective back then of wat this car can really do. And it is more astonishing thinking that til today, no other car could really better this, well except the chiron that is.
There are cars that has more power than the veyron, some even twice but can't reach the speeds the veyron does! This evidence show the brains behind the making of the car.
Crazy to think what was going on like 10 kilometers away from the place where I was raised as a child. Captain Slow being the fastest man in a production car on that date (for a brief moment). All I did at the time was sit behind a screen playing my PlayStation and going outside playing with the other children in the neighbourhood.
A time when we had to wait a week for every episode. And James is commenting while driving the fastest anyone has in a car at the time. Go Captain Slow
In the original show the official VW test pilot is shown driving the car and beating that speed record by a considerable margin. It would have been pretty interesting to know in what way the show's car was different than the record breaking vehicle.
This was just the Veyron. The one you’re probably talking about was the Veyron SuperSports, naked carbon fiber with orange trim. James May also did that top speed test as well, but then the Bugatti test driver also did it and bested his time.
one of the best and best-looking cars of all time. This was such an incredibe feat of engineering at the time, and no doubt a pioneer for today's superfast hypercars.

Captain Slow the fastest Top Gear

The funniest thing is that it was May, who was chosen to break the record. Not Clarkson, not Hammond, but May
Because he's the smartest. Last thing you want is stupid going 250
