Sathiratam(சதிராட்டம்) is a fusion of various dance forms of ancient Tamils. This 2000-year-old Sathiratam dance is performed in South Indian temples only by Devadasis, i.e. female servant of god. By the early 19th century Sathiratam was known as Bharatanatyam and Brahmins(non-Devadasis) had begun to practice it commercially. In 1935 Rukmini Devi Arundale first Brahmin woman to dance it publicly and she is the founder of Kalakshetra, the first institution to teach Bharatanatyam.

Typical Tamil and anti-Brahmin BS. There was no "devadasi" traditions. There were families dedicated to the art form and temples were the spiritual and cultural centers of ancient India. Bharata Muni write Natya Shastra and all Indian dance forms originate from that seminal source. Dance is a form of spiritual sadhana and thats called out in the lyrics. As an Indian, i bearly watch the regional language movies or hear these songs, but it's amazing how you can get one to watch and it was real good, the dance, music and visuals... Good one.!! 😊
For those who don't get the topic on which this song is based.... This movie is based in Bengal(where I'm from), a region in India and it is about Goddess Durga.... The scene where a mock fight ensues between the dancers is basically a potrayal of the fight between Durga and Mahishasur...which represents a victory of good over evil and the pose they strike at 1:55 is basically the pose in which we finally see Durga when she wins and that is pose in which we worship Durga Ma every year. She is the most worshipped goddess for Bengalis especially and we have huge celebrations during her puja and thousands of songs dedicated to her....Also we have a series of songs that are played on Mahalaya(the day she descends to Earth) and a narration of her story that is played on the radio every year at 4am and waking up at those early hours just to listen to it is like a tradition in every bengali family.
