The way she said "Don't be scared. It's still me. I'm Elisabeth. I'm Sue. I'm the same!" Instead of feeling scared or disgust it feels so... heartbreaking
I felt the same way. Yes, her experience of being a young, beautiful celebrity was over, but being young is inherently temporary. She still had money, health, and beauty - a more mature physical beauty, but beauty, nonetheless. She could have taken a different path and reinvented herself. She could have learned a new craft like painting, or sculpting, or music, something where her self-worth wouldn't be derived from her looks or other's affirmations. Her tragic fate was completely avoidable. The ultimate feeling this story invokes in me is sorrow.
I feel bad for her, I mean even being a monstroelisasue she still goes to the event and finally accepted herself, the only problem was the society really
This movie delivered perfect dose of black comedy. This is so funny just because first 2 hours were so powerful. Last 20 minutes is a perfect way of releasing this inside stress that gathered during the movie.
Usually, when I would see this scene alone, i would say wtf, but after watching the whole movie this scene is just shocking and funny at the same time. Great combination of emotions I thought is impossible to feel at the same time :D this movie delivers completlt new experience, that's why i love it.
How about that titty breast being pooped out, followed by people literally doing the stereotypical KILL THE MONSTER chant. That to me was pure genius that reels us back into reminding us that it is a horror film first and foremost!
Two things: 1. For anyone who thinks this scene is ridiculous, you should know that while, yes it was ridiculous, in the cinema the noises are so loud and jarring that this scene was physically uncomfortable to watch, so it wasn't JUST ridiculous. 2. Is Monstro Elisasue ACTUALLY the same person as her two predecessors? I'm dubious. While Elisabeth and Sue both showed a high capacity for self-deception, neither of them would be delusional enough to think that going to the celebration with a paper mask on could POSSIBLY work. This suggests that Monstro actually has quite a child-like mind, and so doesn't really have the same personality as either of her "mothers". Both Elisabeth and Sue are vindictive and angry (the former spitefully creates messes for Sue to deal with, and the latter gets murderously violent) while Monstro reacts to nightmarish public humiliation and actual physical attack (including from people like Harvey who all three have reason to hate) with fear, shame and sadness rather than any kind of rage or violence. Even though the Substance representative insists that Elisabeth and Sue are the same person (despite both of them denying this) that was when the Substance was working properly. It has not worked properly in this case (really? you don't say!) so his assertion may no longer apply. It's also an appropriate bit of narrative irony that the two women who insist they're NOT the same person actually are, and the poor girl who desperate claims she IS the same person actually isn't (and might actually be a BETTER person if she weren't doomed to a short, painful and miserable life) For these reasons, I suspect that poor Monstro actually IS a separate person from her "mothers", and is essentially a mentally and physically deformed child paying for the selfishness and stupidity of the previous generations, and consequently I feel FAR more sorry for her than I ever did for either Elisabeth or Sue.
I like your analysis but I disagree with it. To me, they are all the same person. First, think about how the monster still put on the dress and the earring, and still decided to head for the presentation with its new life, just like Sue returned to be hired by the Studio on her new life. We can see the dressing up scene in some angles: One: Could be a state of complete delusional due to the madness caused by being so ugly, which is what the characters wanted to avoid the most. Two: Could be a state of complete TRUTH. When she got to that stand still, there was no other way other than embrace your true self. She puts the dress and the earring because she finds them pretty. That is all. Three: Could be a state of complete TRUTH [2]. When she got to that stand still, there was no other way other than embrace your sickness. She puts the dress and the earring because she needs to feel pretty on a fundamental level. That is all. Aside from that, I think it's a metaphor by how ugly and hurt elizabeth/sue was deep inside. And when that vulnerable part is displayed to an audience, it can only cause shock, repulse and horror. When the monster starts spilling blood on everyone, it's literally delivering itself to the audience in a way neither Elizabeth or Sue were doing, and yet it's met with complete rejection, fear and disgust.
@@luismatinha9455 Hmmm, that's definitely interesting, and I agree with pretty much all of what you say (and I love the point about how she is literally giving herself to the audience) I think where we disagree is where memories, values and identity overlap. Monstro clearly has their memories and values (like you said, she wants to got to the ball and look pretty, and she remembers where to go) and that certainly means she has SOME aspects of Elisabeth and Sues' identities. For me, for the reasons I mentioned above, her personality seems sufficiently different (possibly due to brain damage) that I consider her different from them the same way a sci-film that involved cloning might have a "functional" copy being basically the same person, but a "defective" copy having a recognisably different personality and identity. I would consider Sue to be a functional copy of Elisabeth (just with different opportunities due to her younger body and the way the Substance functions), but Monstro a defective one, and therefore a different person. That said, I might just be arguing semantics here!
@@mzytryck and @luismatinha9455 excellent discussion! Well thought out analysis. I've been trying to understand how the Monstro finale fit in with the first two hours. It has such a different stylistic tone that they felt like two separate films, each of which I enjoyed. Thanks to you two I'm starting to see a rationale for Monstro from an overall story perspective. Monstro's deformity is metaphorical, but there's just enough pseudo-science going on to justify its grotesque appearance rather than being a younger-prettier Sue: 1) There wasn't a full amount of activator when Sue took it 2) Some of Elisabeth's DNA was in Sue's bloodstream from the transfusion to resuscitate Sue 3) The potency of the activator had greatly diminished over the 3 months So, with a 2nd chromosomal structure flowing through Sue and the activator's replication capacity diluted, you end up with a DNA mutation that produces a distorted conjoined twin with severe neurofibromatosis and some of its innards on the outside. And, quite likely, a child-level intellect.
This movie was one of the most intense watching experiences I ever had. Just when you think I couldn't possibly get any more disturbing, it very, VERY much does!
Man, this scene in the theaters was SO LOUD and I loved it, it would not be so impactful if the sound was softened. Because this, I love cinema and I don't think they will die so easily: this experience would not be the same watching from a TV or a PC screen.
“Welp, thats a wrap! We finished the film and came in under budget!” “Under budget you say? Maybe we could film one more scene… how much fake blood could we buy with the money we still have?” “Uh, a lot. Why?” “Oh, you’ll see 😉”
The shot of the young girl being drenched in gore is so bad taste, one can't help but laugh 😅 But it underlines the serious intent of the film. Why is it OK for a kid to be exposed to half-naked dancers in an exploitative context, and yet repelled by and shielded from Monstro Elisasue?
It’s symbolic of networks and parents poisoning children and sorta grooming them with the TV. Basically putting it in their minds that they WANT to be these dancers when they grow up. When really it’s purely out of a perverse nature.
Yes. Just now, the wicked barbie doll was sold with a qr code that was linked to an adult website. Tell me how is that an accident? Out of all the chances, it goes to a dirty web page?
Yeah, I wouldn't take a kid to a place that shows half-naked dancers. It's one thing if there's perky kids who want to look up nudes behind their guardians' backs because they want the forbidden fruit, it's another just casually exposing kids to that. Like, imagine a guy flashing himself to random kids down the street and then going "Well, there's curious kids out there, you know!", it doesn't really stick. As a general rule of thumb, just don't show that stuff to kids and even if a kid is curious and demands it, you still say NO.
Yeah. If I watched this scene alone, i'd be like wtf, but after so impactful 2h of the movie that scene was a perfect way to release the tension! It was shocking and funny at the same time, rare combination of emotions, thats way i love this movie! It delivers so wide range of emotions
It’s tragic and poetic at the same time. Elizabeth & Sue wants to be accepted and beloved. The society said otherwise. I’m sure if Sue and Elizabeth worked together of their schedules and body control, they can win graceful from Harvey who try to change them. Jealousy has destroyed their purpose and must end up like this. The true villain in this film are: Harvey and the stakeholders. Like always said: it always be men. Beauty standards are created by a man with high libido. I’m sure outside the story, everyone get traumatized from their standards. Including in real life of Entertainment Industry.
I guess that it reinforces the idea that they're all the same person? I feel like since Elisabeth, the original matrix, died, the second cloning attempt tried to replicate her.
One of the BEST movie going experiences of my entire life… gorefest and body horror on levels of PERFECTION!!! blood and splatter can be disgusting, but the movie goes from Lynch and Cronenberg to Tarantino, Carpenter, Stuart Gordon, Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson in an explosive, darkly humorous way, yet you can still feel terrible for Elisabeth/Sue, however this is also a “take it to the face” scene, since society is guilty for the idealization of absurd beauty standards… it was a FEAST of GOREFEST. The hallway scene has one of the most ICONIC shots in horror movie history. This is an instant CLASSIC!! 🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸
