When Ian said " just because this line wasn't recorded on a bass guitar doesn't mean it isn't valid" reminds of something I heard someone else say - All this machinery making modern music Can still be open-hearted Not so coldly charted, it's really just a question Of your honesty" Keep up the great work Ian - we're loving it!
I’m not much of a pop music guy, but Ian ALWAYS brings it. His ear, his enthusiasm, his easy to understand instruction. Killing it! Such a great addition to the SBL family.
Ok, u not much of a pop music listener. For that very reason I never really categorize music as far as whether I listen to it or not. In contrast, I listen to music for what it is worth - not concerning myself with what style or genre it is. To me good / great music is good / great music. Sometime I may not even like a song but there may be a particular sound, phrasing, instrument that l like that catches my ear. Sometime I might not even like a particular song but the energy may be appealing to me. I view music as an expression of one's feeling
This song actually falls really nicely under the fingers on a 5-string. I only realised after trying to play it again after I'd retuned my bass back to normal. Everything falls into standard octave patterns. That being said, I really enjoyed the extra challenge of the drop tuning version. It forced me to move my fingers in different patterns to normal and to think of it differently. Definitely useful for a beginner like me :)
Ian is an amazing teacher. He's the total package. Great instruction, killer attitude about it, just the right level of detail in the storytelling parts. Awesome!
Ok… y’all read my mind. I heard this song again last night and thought “I need to look up more about that bass line”, and this morning I search it… 39 minutes after you post the video.
THE reason i wanted to learn Bass. Driving cross country, very early morning, last summer. My lad was official DJ. I was lagging, so he dropped an upbeat number on. As soon as the bassline kicked in, I was awake, alert and desperate to know how. Thanks Ian!!
The bass breakdown and tutorial is great and all but I think we need to acknowledge the nice touch where you placed a light behind your head, making you look like a deity. Very tasteful detail!
It's definitely a song that lulls you into a false sense of security. It makes you think it's just going to be a fairly standard minimalist pop song all throughout the first verse and pre-chorus, and then it just slaps you in the face with that bass line in the chorus.
I dabble with the bass and really enjoy music. Especially the creative process of it all. Although I’m not a musician at all. So glad I found your channel. Thanks for the background to this awesome bass line!
Dude, you're killing it! - creatively with these vids, and sonically, with the tones! This one will be on repeat++. Old guys, like me, gettin' caught up with such hip riffs (and artists) @SBL! This one's going to create MAGIC through my DUg Pinnick pedal (Tech21), perhaps with s subtle octave/flange in the chain. Thanks again for doing these. You and Scott pay such honor to every tune and artist you speak of. So respectful and makes us all dig deeper to appreciate the gems and monsters out there in music land. Ya'll are raising the bar of how we, the fans and amateur musicians, appreciate part of the process to produce wonderful sounds, both instrumentally and musically. ✌❤
I truly love the way you show the same respect and enthusiasm in your videos, whether you're playing some funky classics or these massive pop bangers. This series is such a treat! I've seen other people thinking the same, but would be really cool if you broke down some Vulfpeck basslines, but maybe not the super obvious ones like Dean Town. The bass in Conscious Club is something you would have SO much fun with... Just saying!
Great lesson Ian. I felt the same way when I first heard it in the middle of the night. As a suggestion, how about the bass line of Joss Stone's remake of Fell in Love With a Boy as a feature.
I love this series becouse you play easier and you explained very good thank you so much for sharing all this content and I want to here about “Flowers” new hit around the word and songs about Queen, don’t forget me nots by Patricia Rushen, Jamiroquai and classics from 70’s 80’s 90’s and more. You are a genius!!!!
Hi Ian, I share your enthusiasm for this cool bass line and I am once again amazed by your way of introducing this cool song to us. Keep it up! The interessting thing: Ultimate Guitar is not allowed to show any TABs of this song online - so Ian / SBL is the only resource ;)
i was also in the car the first time i heard this song. long drive home from a gig at the 2am. it came on the radio and my jaw dropped. i bought it on itunes before the song was over. and listened to it on loop for the rest of the way home. then walked in the door and had to learn it. at 4am.
Great bass line. Great video. Great job Ian. Now if someone at SBL (I’m looking at you Scott) would PLEASE interview Mark King, that would be great. He has all the best basslines. He lives on Isle of Wight. so it would be a fun trip for the crew.
Such great energy and vibes, loved it! Ian, would you take the challenge on breaking down a Primus bass line? The Antipop album has a lot of interesting lines :)
Hi Ian/Scott, one thing I noticed is a hint of swing in the rhythm. It's a small detail since the 16th notes are already short, but it helps to get that funky groove :) Great lesson, peace!
Whatever bass you play you have such a good tone to it. That´s the thing I´m realy struggeling with, getting the sound that I want, Great breakdown of that song. All the best. Cheers
The fact that your recreation of this line on an actual bass sounds 1000x better than the original fake bass is why I can't even be bothered with modern pop. It's a good bass line with all of the mojo and feeling sucked out of it by a soulless producer in a soulless business.
Absolutely, you've captured a sentiment that resonates with many. Your appreciation for the authentic bass vibe shines through. It's all about infusing music with that genuine, human touch! 🎶🎸
Love that bassline! One I've been enjoying recently that I'd appreciate a breakdown of would be Phil Collins and Philip Bailey's Easy Lover. Keep up the good work
Additional clarity for any interested: he uses a lot of chromatic walks and the band used to be known as “the worlds greatest unknown band” which became “the worlds greatest bar band” some time later on.
I too had a similar experience when I heard it first... But I assumed it had compression and gave up learning it until I get a compressor. I'll definitely give it another try.
Hi Ian! I LOVE your videos, and how you use the HX Stomp. The synth stuff you do is killer! You’re the reason I bought the Stomp myself. It would be awesome if you did a video on some of these: - Charlie Puth - Mother - Muse - Hysteria - Tool - Schism, The Pot - Or another greatest album stuff. Maybe Mew - And the glasshanded kites or Frengers?
I'm really struggling with pull-offs with songs like 46@2. I see a lot of people talk about hammer-ons. It would be cool to see your energy talking about how pulling off notes can make a song fun to play too. And, you know, how to do it. Lol
Thank you guys for the little freebies! Just so fantastic! I hope someday to be taking the lessons.Actually, it’d be nice to get a breakdown of December 1963 Oh what a night-Four Seasons.
Not in my typical playlists, but the song “Making Love” by Sir Woman has a catchy driving bass line that feels almost like Hall and Oates, but kind of funky and interesting.
Never heard of this song or the artist, but thanks for breaking this down. I'm not really into pop music these days, but just like the killer bassline in EJ/Cold Heart this bass really is rockin'. But for me it would have been a disappointment if I had heard it and found out it's not a real bass player creating a funky bassline like this "Attention" song. But you proved that it can be played the way it was recorded.
Would love to see a breakdown of some Vulfpeck lines like 1612 or Disco Ulysses. Keep up the great work!
Gonna have to warm up your neck muscles first.
Four pounds of white carb pasta just to put it in the works.
When Ian said " just because this line wasn't recorded on a bass guitar doesn't mean it isn't valid" reminds of something I heard someone else say - All this machinery making modern music
Can still be open-hearted
Not so coldly charted, it's really just a question
Of your honesty"
Keep up the great work Ian - we're loving it!
RIP the maestro ❤️❤️

Cheers Kevin! Thanks so much for watching. It is an honor and a privilege to be a new cast member on Saturday Night Live (sorry)
@@IanMartinAllison LOL! I even corrected it and it must have hit me twice! Thanks again!

Loving Ian's tenacity for tone. His enthusiasm is infectious. Great stuff!

Ah cheers Alex!
Ok… y’all read my mind. I heard this song again last night and thought “I need to look up more about that bass line”, and this morning I search it… 39 minutes after you post the video.
Had the same reaction when I first heard this song! Was mildly disappointed to find out it keyed, but it's still damn funky and fun to play.
Even though that's not my typical music I listen to that is a killer bass line!! Thank for bringing it to our ATTENTION 😉😆❤🔥
That Stomp patch is a masterclass unto itself. Happy thank you more please
THE reason i wanted to learn Bass. Driving cross country, very early morning, last summer. My lad was official DJ. I was lagging, so he dropped an upbeat number on. As soon as the bassline kicked in, I was awake, alert and desperate to know how. Thanks Ian!!
Love this
These videos made me buy a bass. Great series and I always look forward to another one
🧡🧡🧡
Ian I just flat out enjoy your post.
The bass breakdown and tutorial is great and all but I think we need to acknowledge the nice touch where you placed a light behind your head, making you look like a deity. Very tasteful detail!
This one of my favorite to play. Such a killer bass line!
Feels good to hear about pop tunes from time to time! You can still find real gems on the radio or popular playlists/releases on deezer, spotify, etc
Hey Ian and the fella's at SBL! Love this series! I think you should cover Joe dart's bassline in Disco Ulysses, what a tune! Have a great one!
Bass line never jumped out at me before
Think that sappy vocal
Made me change the dial
Great video Ian
It's definitely a song that lulls you into a false sense of security. It makes you think it's just going to be a fairly standard minimalist pop song all throughout the first verse and pre-chorus, and then it just slaps you in the face with that bass line in the chorus.
This guy got CHARISMA!!!
Yoooo, I'm early.
Really dig your teaching style.
Ian is the man and makes scott’s Bass lessons not suck.
Ian is a tone beast!! What a fantastic video and so much fun to watch the two of you bass legends having a blast!
I hope some producers can hear how important a real bass player is for an awsome bottom end.
Thanks man for this example !
You nailed it buddy, best sounding bass cover of this song on YT!!! That octaver effect is essential
Great lesson, as always! Thank you!
I dabble with the bass and really enjoy music. Especially the creative process of it all. Although I’m not a musician at all. So glad I found your channel. Thanks for the background to this awesome bass line!
I would like to see the breakdown of "runaway" by jamiroquai
Ian, you are the man. Keeping me from feeling regretful about playing with a pick.
Pick it up dude!!
"You hear the gronk" is exactly the wisdom I have come to expect from Ian.
Definitely one of the most slapping base line in modern pop, even though its a keyboard.
Great lesson as always, great groove and I love seeing that Serek Lincoln get the attention it deserves 💪🏻
I would live to see Jim Croce „I got a name“. Never Seen anyone Talking about that Bass line. And i love that song
Never heard this song before today. You made me stay up till 2am to learn this line 😄 and I love you for it, Ian. 🔥
🙏🏼🙏🏼
You never heard this song before? Very sadd
Yes, this song rules and is a ton of fun to play. But we gotta talk about how good this Serek bass sounds.
It’s a beast
Dude, you're killing it! - creatively with these vids, and sonically, with the tones! This one will be on repeat++. Old guys, like me, gettin' caught up with such hip riffs (and artists) @SBL! New Ian! It’s been far, far too long. Another amazing video.
I love this series. Thx for the hard work !
Ian, fantastic breakdown! Always love your content and your delivery style. You make it FUN!
Awesome stuff, Ian is the best!!. Thank you ScottBassLessons for the incredible videos and teaching always providing on this channel. 👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🔥🔥❤️
Great choice of bassline. I love that Sarek Lincoln, by the way! What a look, what a tone (in your hands)?
Love your videos Ian! Educational, entertaining and just plain fun!
Ian awesome episode. You crushed it!
Great lesson Ian. I felt the same way when I first heard it in the middle of the night. As a suggestion, how about the bass line of Joss Stone's remake of Fell in Love With a Boy as a feature.
I’d like to see more detailed breakdowns of the stomp patches. It’s such a fantastic tool and I find myself picking up tricks from here and there.
Mcfadden and Whitehead ain't no stoppin us now.
I will always keep a eye out for these videos they give me a great insight to really good bass lines
great video. sick bassline for sure
The interessting thing: Ultimate Guitar is not allowed to show any TABs of this song online - so Ian / SBL is the only resource ;)
There goes that Ian again, breaking it down and always inspiring. Thank you SBL and Ian! ❤🔥🎸
For me as a Rock Bassist and SBL Student. You Sir, are a tone king. Dug the podcast about pedals very much.
i was also in the car the first time i heard this song. long drive home from a gig at the 2am. it came on the radio and my jaw dropped. i bought it on itunes before the song was over. and listened to it on loop for the rest of the way home. then walked in the door and had to learn it. at 4am.
THE GRONK
the entire time I was watching this I was searching for the words to describe that texture. You captured it hahaha
I subscribed... and now I love you guys!!!
you are not just a good player you're really smart too and you understand how to make it like the original which othere RUclipsrs cant do
Nice bass! What about Jamiroquai - Cosmic Girl?
Great bass line. Great video. Great job Ian.
Now if someone at SBL (I’m looking at you Scott) would PLEASE interview Mark King, that would be great. He has all the best basslines. He lives on Isle of Wight. so it would be a fun trip for the crew.
Great idea
Lovely tone! For us HX Stomp fans out there can we have your patch pleeeaase!
I know this was a while ago… but i just tried it!
WOW!!!! THIS IS REAL FUN!!!
Cheers Ian, great stuff
Such great energy and vibes, loved it! Ian, would you take the challenge on breaking down a Primus bass line? The Antipop album has a lot of interesting lines :)
Another awesome short scale bass the white Serek !
Thanks Ian - what a great video. Your enthusiasm is infectious!
Yes Phillip! Thanks for watchin' 🙌🏻
Hi Ian/Scott, one thing I noticed is a hint of swing in the rhythm. It's a small detail since the 16th notes are already short, but it helps to get that funky groove :) Great lesson, peace!
Ian is badass player!
Great video, thank for your precious work!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Hey Marcus - Check this vid Ian put together on his tone, hope it helps!

Tbh this is the first riff I taught myself on bass.
Can you share the HX patch? It sounds awesome.
1. Silence - Manu Katche, ( Pino's bassline ), Came back haunted (Live version 2013, Pino's bassline) - Nine Inch Nail, etc... : D
THE GRONK OF THE BASS!

Amazing Bass Line great breakdown ( Thank you Large, Ian!)now I gotta go get it and work it out!
YES IT IS!!! This is the best bass line ever.
i heard the bass line as well and thought it was very cool. I hear almost like an upright tone in it. Very nice video btw.
dude..you are awesome...love the videos, and absolutely love that bass line. Keep rockin" bud
Steve Garringtons fuzz sound on Low's "What Part Of Me" is something I'd love to hear broken down
A criminally underrated band in general, The Good Rats. Songs like Klash-ka-Bob, Tasty, Cherry River. Lenny is one of my all-time bass heroes.
Additional clarity for any interested: he uses a lot of chromatic walks and the band used to be known as “the worlds greatest unknown band” which became “the worlds greatest bar band” some time later on.
Would it be possible to break down some Royal Blood lines??
I too had a similar experience when I heard it first... But I assumed it had compression and gave up learning it until I get a compressor. I'll definitely give it another try.

Coming soon!
Any chance of getting some effects settings in the workbook?! ...Ian is the effect king so would be good to have some insight please!
Will include moving forward!
Love it.
Prince
Thanks for existing Ian, without you I would have already kidnapped many people who program basslines
I'm really struggling with pull-offs with songs like 46@2. I see a lot of people talk about hammer-ons.
It would be cool to see your energy talking about how pulling off notes can make a song fun to play too.

The bass Charlie used is from the plugin "Trilian" By spectrasonics, the preset is called "retro 60 full range"
Try it!!!
I hope to hear you analyze any bass lines by Simon Grove. I love his stuff on Plini’s
record handmade cities
In honour of the recent passing of Reggae Bass Legend, Robbie Shakespear, can you break down Botanical Roots by Black Uhuru ??
@7:40
Upvote for easy practice point
