one of my ALLTIME favorites! i first heard his recordings decades ago -rachmaninoff's 3rd concert he recorded after winning first place WITH richter in their national competition AFTER merzhanov just returned to piano from serving in the Soviet Army during WW2 ..imagine that..and the recording is the BEST i have ever heard, bar none. his tone and coloring is so UNforced..and such natural lyricism...

Wonderful the way he lets the ghosts of notes ring together in the middle section of the movement.

@iloveclassicalmusic you have to hear his recordings of Rachaminoff 3rd concerto - just MAGNIFICENCE at its highest in EVERY way. from pure refinement to lyricism to drama to grand concept..everything, EVERYTHING is there without a single "aspect" of interpretation and playing dominating the others..unlike most pianists. same with his Liszt Etudes

he plays the instrument - in all its colorations -- as if it's the SIMPLEST thing to do! even if it's not. it's like sitting with a grand old wizard , or carpenter or craftsman or artist - telling you the "secrets" and says:
"oh -- there's nothing to it -- you just do this and that and then you''ll see -- it's so easy" ....
but YOU KNOW it's NOT! .
