Just watched this, as it was too late for me to stay up, as I'm in the UK. Brilliant interview John! I also watch Matt's channel he's great too! But he was right in what he said at the end, you bring so much positivity into this medium, it's brilliant. On a selfish note keep putting the videos out 🙏🤣🤣
Great chat! Hate i missed the live. As someone who loves the Wheel of Time I do hope you continue with it. The journey of the characters is pretty crazy.
What a wonderfully chill, genuine and authentic chat! Matt is one of the greats for good reason, his unfiltered reviews always bring me tons of joy to watch. Thanks for sharing the fun 🤩
I'm about halfway through my own Realm of the Elderlings journey, and I haven't been this attached or connected to a cast of characters so much since at least Dresden Files .
Awesome chat! I’m debating whether to start ‘Gardens of the Moon’. I’ve heard such mixed things…that’ll be my next big series, unless I try ‘wheel of time’…either way, looking forward to getting back into a big one…loved the convo here!
So glad you owned up to "lifting" from Matt's channel because it made me feel better about when I do it too haha. Great interview guys from two people I really respect.
Matt is a rare breed of being very spontaneous with his reviews and incredibly articulate! Glad you were able to talk to him! To elaborate on something you discussed, what do you think the line is when running a channel between needing to come up with original ideas for videos and copying other people’s just because it’s fun? I feel a drive to only do original ideas and yet sometimes I want to jump on a hype train and get more views like others do… what are your thoughts?
@@iSamwise I try to just focus on what is fun to do so it never becomes a grind. So my channel is not the most original. I am influenced by the rest of booktube I watch things and think that would be a fun way to track my reading journey and I do it. I don’t overly think a lot through 😂
Matt should definitely give the Belgariad a try...a couple reasons...they are really good(and I'm usually not a huge fan of older fantasy either), but more importantly the books are quite small and with how fast Matt reads he could read the first book in 2 days and then decide if the series is going to work for him or not.
John the best part of the Wheel of Time for me was the weekly discussions I had with my brother. You may find once you pick it up again that you really look forward to sharing your thoughts. You read book 6, Lord of Chaos already? You have the “box” and the battle at the end with the introduction of the Asha’man powers. You thought Warlord had moments, WOT has like 100 great moments overall.😀 Richard from 2 to Ramble would be the most perfect person to discuss WOT.
@@Talking_Story There is no rush for you to jump back in but when you do, there is a Tarvalon library website that has all the summaries of chapters/books. I never found the book sloggy..there is one secondary storyline that gets dragged out way too long and a ridiculous “love” triangle maybe my only complaints and Elayne of course, the most annoying/stupidest character ever to grace a page. I guess if it were perfect it would be Malazan?? Will get to that one soon enough too.
Matt's channel is amazing and his honesty is refreshing. Some booktubers only giving Four and five stars to books which is ridiculous and it feels fake and disinginous! Impossible that one loves every single book that he reads!
Been a bit guilty of that lately as I have just been reading what folks have been recommending to me and I have not had a miss in a good while. Once I finishing catching up on these books and series that are universally loved I may change my tune.
@@Talking_Story You are only Reading the best recommendations so It's different and I'm not getting fake vibe from you John and you seem Like a really Nice and sincere guy! 🥰
I'm gonna disagree, I didn't take any notes for Second Apocalypse or Malazan Book of the Fallen. Both actually have fairly approachable writing styles but still with rich and engaging prose (unlike Sanderson lol) I actually go out of my way not to use dense, because I think that gives the wrong impression, so I prefer to say rich. My advice, just go with the flow just let your mind gravitate to what it gravitates to and don't worry about understanding every storyline, you just won't have context until later. If taking notes helps you, do it but that would've killed my enjoyment if I'd done that. Malazan books tend to have fairly self-contained plots (there's still plenty of ongoing subplots, character arcs etc) so you could do them months and months apart if you wanted. I read most of the books fairly close together because I wanted to and I was having so much fun. All in all it took me a little under 2 years and the only regrets I have about that are the 6 month break between Books 6 and 7 (I wish it had been 3 months in retrospect) and I binged Books 7 through 10 whereas I did Books 2 through 6 in what I like to call a slow but continuous binge over the course of most of that previous year to when I resumed and finished the series. I wish fans would empathise more just how much entertainment value there is in Malazan. Second Apocalypse too, but Malazan isn't anywhere near as grim.
I will absolutely take your advice! If I am into it I just can’t see myself taking notes. I am just gonna go with it. Maybe when I am done with a reading session I will try to jot down some thoughts. That is what I usually don’t I remember to write anything down. I only stop reading to write down something if I wanna remember a page number to maybe read for a video later. I gotta say I am excited to get into both of these. Bakker will be this year and like I said I am gonna switch Malazan back and forth with War of Light and Shadow.
@@Talking_Story I've one of Wurts' standalones, To Ride Hell's Chasm and I believer one of her earliest series Cycle of Fire trilogy so I'll try those and see if I want to commit to an 11 book series sooner rather than later. But for now my next BIG (10+ books) series post RotE is looking like it'll either be Tchaikovsky's Shadows of the Apt or my re-read of Malazan Book of the Fallen, this time incorporating the Novels of the Malazan Empire and maybe the spin-off novellas but with the novels alone that's 16 books but that won't be happening for a least a couple months after RotE. Or maybe I'll do something impulsive and restart WoT 🤷♂️ I can't imagine doing both at the same time and being your first time reads but if you can do it, why not.
