When talking about modern Ireland one thing that needs to be mentioned was how a Protestant Irish Parliament successfully gained independence for Ireland between 1782 and 1800, during which time Catholics got most of their rights back, with most Irish people of different faiths uniting under the ideologies of either constitutionalism or Republicanism, with both in favour of varying degrees of Irish sovereignty/autonomy and increased personal rights.
This independence ended when a failed Republican Revolution in 1798 led British prime minister William Pitt to intimidate and bribe the Irish Parliament into merging the Kingdom Ireland into the UK after an initial Union vote failed. Ireland’s Parliament was forced to merge with The British one (though the courts and civil service of Ireland remained separate, but nominally subject to Westminster from now on).
People on both sides seem to have completely forgotten this chapter in Irish history, because Protestants and Catholics fighting together for an independent Irish Kingdom doesn’t fit anyone’s narrative, and yet it had a major impact on the island. Unionism, Republicanism and Constitutionalism all originate from the original Irish volunteers that used the opportunity of the American Revolution distracting Britain to revolt in 1782. This heralded the independence and has shaped all aspects of Irish politics ever since…

This series was incredible! Just a brilliant bit of documentation and production. It's right up there with some of the best factual series ever made.

I thank you for this post. I had a Irish uni friend in the 1970’s she spoke some about the troubles at that time I was young and being from the States ignorant about what was going on outside of my little world. I wish I had RUclips back then I could have been a better friend realizing what her life was back home.

This is a really well-produced and presented series, both for production values and the sheer wealth of information it offers - like a true documentary series, it leaves you to form your own insights.
Many thanks to all involved, I think this topic is worthy of anyone's time, just to appreciate the situation and the experiences of people who endure(d) it. 👍🍻

I would imagine it would have been very easy to get caught up in the troubles whichever community you belonged to.I was a juvenile delinquent spent my teens locked up for theiving in my community. My enemy was poverty lack of knowledge and as a teenager I thought I was invincible.40 years on I look back in disbelief shudder to realise I could have been seriously hurt.I can’t imagine the guilt a gunman must feel in his later wiser years problem is if you kill someone that’s final you can’t take it back.Life is difficult enough working full time paying bills I’ve been homeless rock bottom but have been employed for 30 years now changed my life what I’m trying to say is where there is a Will there is a way where there is life there is hope to many people have died already in the troubles give peace a chance create hope for we all want a decent life.

Do protestants and catholics in Northern Ireland speak the same dialect? It seems a stupid question, but I wonder how, during the troubles, it looks like protestants and catholics were easily recognised. (Question from Belgium)

Seconds after that brick huts the car Queen Elizabeth is still waving... she taps Prince Philip on the back as he's looking back. He looks pissed, but she just reminds him to keep his head. "We won't give them the satisfaction of a reaction." Remarkable woman.

@@adamfrazer5150 I need to give it a second run. Don't remember almost anything since I saw it immediately after it had got its release, so it is years and years back when, apart from the fact I enjoyed it quite a lot. You should keep in mind the fact I had not been that well-versed in the stories surrounding The Troubles as I am today. Still, I consider it worth a go. It had a certain grimy and oppressive ambiance about it.
