… plus a little shenanigan to distract from the absolute tragedy
Fantasy High: Junior Year, Season 3, Dimension 20, Dropout
Episode 15
Brennan Lee Mulligan, Ally Beardsley, Lou Wilson, Emily Axford, Brian Murphy, Siobhan Thompson, Zac Oyama
Dungeons and Dragons, DnD, Critical Role
This will go down as the moment the fandom stopped believing the rat grinders were a red herring
Here’s how they can still win-
People thought that? At best they don’t know what they’re doing, but they are clearly linked to the main plot…
kettledog yes, but some of the rg's not yet sure... will see on the next ep.
@@HenriqueErzinger I saw people on reddit speculating that the rat grinders were just conducting their own investigation into the dead god, and just didn't like the bad kids cause they're petty. Now even Oisin is implicated.
Eh I still think the devils nectar could be being used by Kipperlily to make the other RGs convince themselves they’re still a team and loyal to each other. Kip is definitely evil, the rest I can see being victims.
Can't wait for Buddy to meet Helio and have a moment like Kristen and go crazy
He’s a straight white dude, they’ll get along just fine.
@@HenriqueErzingerYou don't know if he is straight in his heart
@@HenriqueErzingerWell yeah, that's what we're afraid of, that Buddy will come back and say, "Talked to Helio, he said he's down with the old Harvestman plan! The corn regime starts now!"
Nah, Buddy will likely even think Helio is cool.
@Butterratbee I mean they've made a big point of the fact that all the followers of helio/sol happen to be white humans who are incredibly racist (in the dnd sense but honestly Bobby Dawn def says slurs)
I can’t believe 4 different dogs would do a thing like this
lmao your name made this comment so much better
4 Dogs in a trenchcoat.
My god, the amount of hoops a DM has to jump through to try and pull a fast one on the players is just nuts in high-level 5E.
Ally had Kristen eat that shit on nothing but a whim, insane to think that Kipperlily was *that* close to getting them failed out of the school.
Yup, the system falls apart really quickly.
It's a fairly standard player tactic too. High level rogue, greater invisibility. It can only be seen by an absolutely absurd active perception check, see invisibility, or true sight. It's not much of a hoop really.
@@DemonLordSparda The invisibility itself isn't that big a deal, but in addition to that they had to have:
- Stolen Kristen's gems
- Stolen Buddy's gems
- Had a backup plan in mind such that not being able to kill Gavin wouldn't mean they were completely useless
- Had readied actions to teleport away the moment their plan was complete, and
- Have specifically used a Plane Shift spell so that their subsequent whereabouts couldn't be tracked down via True Sight
Plus after the fight Gavin had to essentially forbid the Bad Kids from staying behind personally to stake out the scene and gather more info. And even then the Bad Kids know what happened, are reporting everything to the Council of the Chosen immediately, and have left behind a streaming phone to monitor the crime scene and get whatever additional info they can. All this while absolutely crushing the most difficult combat they've faced in 3 years lol
@@trailblazer225for the two Rat Grinders that were there it would be easy to do what they did. Kipperlily probably has a +14 to slight of hand and stealth, Oshean has access to both Greater Invisibility and a Plane Shift plus Metamagic like Subtle Spell.
While the Bad Kids were preparing for the first round of combat Kipperlily would have had more then enough time to steal the diamonds from both clerics and get into position to kill Buddy and the Procter. The only mistake Brennen made was saying the diamonds required were 3000 gp instead of 300 gp which the party may have been able to manifest themselves from spells or abilities.
i NEED the angry scream at the end of the preview for next weeks ep to be buddy please let my boy go apeshit on the rat grinders (i will be devastated if buddy isn’t brought back to life)
My (hopeful) theory is it's Buddy and he's angry because he met the shitstain that is Helio and realized Kristen was right.
My theory is that it’s lucy being brought back finally and she comes back raging from all the magic madness shit
@@Mercurytomars211 ohhh that would be so incredibly metal

Brennan's so good. I don't for a minute think Kipperlilly was standing directly behind Buddy until Ally had Kristen eat the vulture eye and Brennan decided to reward that move with story stuff. It was probably in the plan that she was going to pull something, but Brennan was like, "Oh there's my hook in and it's cooler than the original plan" and took it.
Also, go Ally. They do fun stuff like this all the time and it's great.
i feel like ally brings that out of brennan constantly, specifically the “oh well i was gonna do this different but i guess we are doing it now and maybe even cooler than i could’ve ever planned.” i think it’s why these 7 love playing together, what they bring out of each other is always better than what any of them could think of individually, and they are highly creative smart people who can think of a lot.
Did anyone else get a flashback of a piece of cake in hot ass pants doing what Kipperlily just did?
Let's see if they call you Amethar the Unfallen after this. Here's to a future you can't ruin.
"You know the thing I hate about you Bad Kids? It's that you are so...damn...LUCKY."
The fact they took out so many powerful monsters is insane to me
They are pretty high level, have a bunch of OP stuff and a big group. Also the monsters came in waves, not all at once.
@@HenriqueErzingerthink the main thing was Zac rolling an insanely high amount of crits. Like the bad kids had some insanely good rolls throughout the combat. Brennan also rewarded them for setting things up well with Fig disguising herself as the proctor.
These guys are so well tuned to kick ass, it's fucking beautiful to watch them pop off.
I was laughing my ass off that Gorgug basically tripped a purple worm more than once. A creature several size categories bigger than him that's half underground and has no legs.
Pretty normal in 5e
listen buddy was nowhere near my favorite npc but my boy didn't deserve this :(
I am on the fence. If he really was involved and knew about all the stuff or even did some of the stuff, the murders and whatever else they were up to, then tbh he deserved it, if he was not, then I agree with you. The worst part tbh is that he has to meet Helio now.
I really love the moment Kristen is like "if we don't bring him back then they fail" then everyone is just like "we should bring him back still"
It’s always nice to see an actual heroic dnd party that hasn’t resorted to murder hoboing.
@@illuminatedstonepersonisp6869 I mean...they still gave it a little more thought than should be comfortable...
@@StealthMarmot_ Considering how long the timeframe for ressurrections are I think it was more a question of immediate revivification. They have been talking about reviving Lucy and the timeframe closing for removing the curse so she can be revived within reason - which is a full year. Waiting with reviving Buddy until like, past the end of the year, or just letting it go to the school rather than do it themselves seem perfectly reasonable.
You know at least i finally understand how the "00" die works now so thats good, i guess 4:29
Kipper Lilly Copper Kettle is a rogue - and I’ve been waiting all season for her to do rogue shit. Was thrilled she was caught red handed.
She's probably been doing rogue shit all year, and no one knew because... well, rogue
With this move? Assassin subclass for sure. She's the master criminal to Riz's genius detective.
@@smartalec2001 for sure.
Ik on the first day of school the bad kids killed the lunch lady and got one of the other professors killed via Arthur Aguefort shooting him in the head. - it’s not like killing people or even staff members/teachers is seen as a negative at this school.
Wouldn’t be surprised if any other campaign students thought ‘huh we can use murder to our advantage and not get expelled, interesting.’ Kipper being a rogue or any rogue students/even the heavy hitters - would have a field day with that info. Kippers now using it as an advantage possibly.
Also we don’t know which professors have already been murdered and if that affected the groups prior to this and put some blame on the bad kids already - or what motivates kipper to actually want to change the school but I wouldn’t be surprised since she’s so focused on Riz. Could also just be about Riz’s mom and how she was a detective or a lawyer who was digging into the secrets of the property’s and the murders off campus and the red shards.
The idea that the rat grinders would fail because they don’t have buddy is only reasonable if they also didn’t take the last stand which the bad kids haven’t really expressed. But it’s likely that they already took it and got their grades submitted early passed everyone in their party like the bad kids did and are now officially on break to do other stuff.
@@smartalec2001turns out, Mastermind.
Mastermind is really the “Moriarty” Subclass.
@@mistamemewide I forgot that was a thing. I was on the right track!
So the Bad Kids were wrong about a key thing here, the rat grinders won't fail if Buddy stays dead, they move to pass/fail instead. Everything we know of the RG is that they're fine taking the easy way out, and don't care about going above and beyond. Kipper ensured she has an auto-pass, and I'm guessing the other core RG's also have plans in place to ensure they're on the passing side. I think their whole plan with Buddy was to have reason for Bobby Dawn to come in and fail Kristin in order to force the Bad Kids into doing the last stand. Once the last stand started Buddy outlived his usefulness and had to die to ensure that the Bad Kids also died in that demi-plane.
Joke here about "Just like regular high school" but also no seriously, that's messed up
Don’t they already have their grades in the system? the Bad Kids are taking the last stand because of Kristen’s circumstance, but the rat grinders can just get someone before the next semester starts (though, who’d want to join a party with two clerics dead in 2 years?).
@@Momoryuto I don't remember if it's episode 1 or 2, but Brennan made it clear that there was a cut off date at the beginning of the year for switching party members. So they could get a new cleric next year, but not for the rest of this one.
one of the wildest story twists I've ever seen in any medium
Really? Did you watch A Crown of Candy or Unsleeping City? This wasn’t a particularly wild twist for Brennan…
@@HenriqueErzingermaybe they just enjoyed the twist? There's no need to imply they're not a real fan just bc they enjoyed this set up lol
truly the moment I realised Buddy wasn't in on their plot. RIP lil guy.
The heightening of this scene with the editing truly added to the moment of it all. This was my favorite episode for this season!

Kristen trying to hurl the eye back up is so funny to me. I laughed every freaking time.
her distressed face is fucking killing me 😂
Can not wait for the Criminal Trial, where some D.A. has to talk about the vulture dimension.
I have a theory that Kipperlilly is a take on Power-gamers, specifically the control freak players that need to dominate a table and demands everybody be hyper optimized.
Could be the reason Lucy was murdered. She wanted to change her god and that just didnt fit the mold Kipperlilly wanted.
I think it might be the opposite, Kipperlilly made Lucy change her god to be more optimized and Lucy refused. Cause Yolanda said it was really strange that Lucy would change her god
I think this just killed everyone’s theories about the Rat Grinders.
Thank god, honestly. Way too many people were giving them the benefit of the doubt

Bobby Dawn is about to either have zero feelings because it's "all a part of Gods plan," or he's about to go full Colonel Sanders ass rage star mode.
the way ally repeats "*anywhere* in the multiverse" like thats a clue

Of course Kristen’s crazy shenanigans would foil Kipperlily’s schemes.
i think whats beautiful about this clip is how it shows how committed brennan is to giving the players justice; he doesnt necessarily give them free reign but he does give them an opportunity to change the situation hes made for them with, understandably, extremely low odds of working. it gives weight to what he has set up but also acknowledges the party's efforts to undo what he has done in a way that makes sense for the situation but isnt a blatant deux ex machina
100% hope Buddy comes back questioning helio and goes full philosophy. Kristen would either HATE it or Gurdy has competition
I literally screamed at this point. I scared my cats. I woke up my mom. I’m never going to be over this.
I was waiting for kristen to plane shift buddy to a hospital but they were the one to say "if their cleric dies they all fail"
Yeah I feel like they definitely could have done more to save him and/or preserve him for a rez. Adaine also has plane shift and other teleports I believe. She just got ten barrels of diamonds for wizard class as well. I think the moment just threw them all for a loop so much having been in pitched combat with some of D&D's toughest monsters that they weren't ready to suddenly play defense for an innocent bystander NPC.
That, and they may have also decided that it would be a more interesting story if they didn't fix it right away and let it play out. Brennan very deliberately made sure that this was not easily fixable by taking two clerics worth of revivify gems out of play.
@@loganthrives Yeah I think they took the hint from Brennan when Gavin kept saying "let's leave the body here because this is a murder scene, someone will come back for it". That felt like a DM nudge and the party took it, can't blame them
@@loganthrivesAdaine doesn't have diamonds. Remember that those diamonds were specifically used for wizard classes.
The point of leaving the body as is, is to have professionals examine it. Messing around with it is too risky. And if the proctor is giving the kids specific instructions, it makes sense to follow them.
The combination of the sound effects and the minis creates such a chilling atmosphere
Um, Actually: Revivify is 300 gold pieces of diamonds, not 3000, Brennan Lee Mulligan made a mistake by an order of magnitude.
Or did he? 👀🤔
Still doesnt matter the jacket can only provide things worth 10 gold pieces
@@benvaun1330 I know, I was referencing the fact that Brennan often appears on "Um, Actually" a gameshow about being technically correct about minutiae
Why never forgiving Brennan? This is great storytelling.
But he was just a little baby boy.
5:53-the crossbow was definily loaded with rage crystals somehow right? kipperlily was gonna shoot the monsters to make them more dangerous? or maybe shoot the bad kids so they couldn't be revived? or both?
It looks like the plan was to shoot (and kill) Gavin so the Bad Kids would lose those points and if it had happened earlier even if they answered all the questions new waves of monsters would come until they all died and Buddy wouldn't have been able to revive them since Kipperlily stole all the dimaonds.
I think what was in the crossbow, possibly rage crystals, were whatever was used to curse the bodies to prevent revival.
I was having such a good time before this happened ;_;
So excited to see the demise of Aguefort’s Rachel Berry at the end of this season
The way I audibly gasped at this part and started freaking out was insane! This season has been full of some messed up moments!
The worst part is that was technically a reward for Amy, who had a free moment where they decided to give Kristen Truesight for no reason other than it couldn't hurt and they could do it, which let them catch Copperkettle out before they could do some much nastier shit (according to Brennan)
Right, but something like that was probably going to happen. They discussed in the Adventuring party that it seemed like she was going to go after both the proctor and Buddy, and when she got caught, she made the choice that would ensure they couldn't be revivified.
@@acetheenby1475 That’s what I mean. Losing the proctor, or maybe even one of the Bad Kids themselves would have been a much worse result for them. Because Kristen caught them through pure chance, they passed and stayed in school, have a witness testifying their innocence, and confirmed that the Ratgrinders are bad. The proctor and Buddy dropping dead with no one knowing exactly what happened would have been much worse.
i need a supercut of fig kissing all the monsters as they pass
I was watching this while working and I audibly gasped SO LOUD
im still holding onto hope for Oisin, my guess is that he witnessesed what she did to Buddy and pulled her out of these out of shock. Regarding her though, either Keplerlabia Cupertino is being influenced or possessed by Ankarna, or she is just that fucking evil.

I went absolutely wild at this moment. I knew Buddy was a patsy, but I never expected this!!! Holy fuck!
the journey from Freshman Year Kristen to Junior Year Kristen cannot be overstated
See, the Vulture dimension rules.
This morning I woke up and turned on RUclips, and this video came up. I hadn't watched the episode yet, so I didn't click it, but autoplay started and I saw the subtitles: So with no further context, I assume that's what this video was about, and quickly turn it off so I don't spoil anything else.
I spent the whole day kinda annoyed about having a twist spoiled before I had the chance to watch the episode. Then I actually watched it, and - well.
Gentle repose
The amount of things that had to happen to make this possible is truely absurd, first The Bad Kids HAD to get the Vulture riddle right, then if Aidien didn’t move kristen to the wall with the scatter kristen wouldn’t have moved within range of buddy to be able to see shit, then kristen had to use the eye of the vulture king *using an action in a very dangerous combat* to be able to see this, Honestly I really think Brennan had no clue whatsoever that this could happen.
My guy Brennan is a MASTERFUL DM but knows only one sound effect XD
How does someone die from being their throat slit before anyone can take actions that wouldn't even take 6 seconds during combat? Even without fresh air or blood they wouldn't be completely dead that fast.
I read "death of a minor" in the episode trigger warnings and thought "Aw man, they almost went a whole season without dying". So uh, i wasn't ready for this
so wrong for this, but the storytelling is so good
ohhhh i get it. She wanted to kill Gavin and nobody had revivify gems thanks to her so she could fail the bad kids
Come on oishin!
I know! He genuinely seemed like a nice guy.
They better bring him back!!!
Made me physically ill when it happened
I actually really liked Buddy.
I think Kipperlilly is fully out for herself. She already has an instant A+ for finding the Rogue teacher, so it doesn’t matter what happens to the rest of the group. She does not care what happens to any of them, she only keeps them around if they’re useful. Full girlie psychopath.
It just occurred to me...
When I first saw this, I thought it was a little cheap that Brennan would instant-kill a level character to avoid any Spare the Dying shenanigans, but now I don't think it was a railroad: Daisydukes Pocketpeaking actually auto-crited and snuck attacked this child so hard that she actually destroyed him despite him being presumably as beefed as the rest of the Rat Grinders.
Me over here wondering why their revivify cost 3,000gp instead of 300gp as is 5e RAW. I can't tell if their revivify is just really expensive or if he made a mistake. Either way, she wouldn't have been able to pull it out of the jacket, but it just stuck in my mind.
Wait so why did the divine intervention immediately fail with Ally rolling that 7? I've anyways understood the single-digit D10 to be the ones digit
I am not sure, but I think they just rolled 2d10, one at a time, with the understanding that the first roll was the tens place and the second roll is the ones place. Perhaps Ally did not have the double digit ten sided die (or d%) or just wanted to roll one at a time in the box of doom instead of two dice at once.
You're right that she should have rolled the double-digit die first, but a d10 is a d10.
They rolled the Ten Digit first. There's no point in rolling the second digit because she fails on anything above a 14. So when they rolled a 70 on the first die, it was an immediate failure.
Weirdly, I don't think Oisin was in on this. I don't know how that's possible, but we know that Kipperlily was protective of him and didn't want him exposed to getting illegal magic items, so she had Aelwyn do it. I just don't see why she'd keep him protected from a smaller crime and bring him in on a full murder of their own teammate. i don't know if all the Rat Grinders are as nasty as Kipperlily, i think they're at varying levels of nasty
I'm really curious what Bobby Dawn will do next episode. Did he sign off on having his own grandson murdered? Or will this be the end of whatever alliance he had with the Rat Grinders?
"Critically important... the Ochre Jellies move another 40 feet."
Important to inject some levity into the tense realisation that the dude assigned to not let them die is dead.
Me drawing a line through all my Gay Buddy Dawn headcannons...
That, "They're magical guts--" and the cutoff is killer. 😂
I'm a bit concerned that Buddy might be back and have been given or been on the receiving end of devil's honey to be led to believe that The Bad Kids killed him instead of The Rat Grinders.
so the spell they wanted was gentle repose instead of spare the dying
That background waving is trippy

Leave it to Brennan to kill the golden retriever npc
This is exactly what he did in season 1
No Oisin! I thought you had potential!
thats a bit of railroading
NEVER forgiving him
It was a dope moment
1) they may have also taken the last stand prior to this so the rat grinders so they may already pass their classes even if buddy dies. Thems the rules. They all pass then the grades are submitted and they’re done they don’t even need to go to classes anymore technically. Was it murder sure was it expulsion worthy na.
2) buddy loves Helio so he probably will just go to Helios heaven and do what normally happens to his followers - meander around corn or Kumbaya/Helio summer camp shit
3) Christian was the ‘Chosen Prodigal whatever Cleric’ so her experience was more personal and direct communication with the god.
(Think about it this way other party members have died right and when they go to hell or when they die and go to heaven they just experience a very wack hell/heaven/dad? experience. - Gorgug got a bunch of weird trees with razor blade leaves. No god in sight nobody to explain what happened when he was dead only when he came back. Same thing with Riz. Christian talked to Helio because that’s her whole thing Bobby might be a cleric too but he wasn’t the official prodigy kid so chances are he doesn’t actually meet Helio his powers are more from the belief that Helio exists - not that him and Helio have a deep personal connection)
If he does meet Helio I think it will be interesting how he gaslights himself into thinking Helio was cool or nice because that’s his god and he saw his god even if meeting your hero’s doesn’t always go as you plan there’s still gods plan - ya? Christian wasn’t truely gaslighted into loving Helio she had a bunch of faith but was skeptical as hell of all of it. So meeting her hero and being disappointed was a huge deal for her, not everyone is gonna have that same experience.
Brutal
I mean it's good for the plot and whatever but even for me as a DnD layman it makes no sense rules wise right?
At the beginning of Kristen's turn, as a reaction to being spotted: Kipperlilly who had a readied action to shoot the judge (after an unknown trigger) changed her action to instantly kill Buddy outright with a melee sneak attack instead (so damage twice as high as his max hp right?). No DM would allow their players to pull something like that. "Sorry you need to specify the action and the trigger on your turn. You cant just change the target and action you have readied."
Unless there is like a class feature for a mastermind Rogue that lets you prep multiple sets of readied actions per turn?
After killing Buddy, Is it possible that Kipperlily killed the rouge teacher too?? Riz discovered she is a ghost. Did kipperlily kill her so no-one else could find her??
There has been a ghost teacher at Augefort since the literal first episode of the first season. It’s how Fig got detention. She tried to steal the ghost’s ghost steak from the teacher’s lounge. We never learned much more so it’s extremely likely the rogue teacher has been the ghost teacher this whole time
@Baymax872 Oh shit that's a good point, didn't think of that
And here I was thinking Oisin might actually be a decent guy. :(
Who?
I'll never forgive Mulligan for impersonating a good GM.
Considering the rat grinders are XP grinding, they have limited real battle experience. They don't fight big scary monsters. The probably were struggling hard or lost The Last Stand. THEY are the rats being grinded, now.
Is this the first non-Gillear familial death that the Bad Kids have had in the hands of their enemies?
Buddy isn't related to any of the bad kids. You might be confusing him with Kristin's brother, Bucky. Kind of unfortunate how similar the names are, given they're both new students at Aguefort, both deeply devout clerics of Helio etc!
