Actually, in the past week or so I was watching a PGA Tournament and a PGA player had a 7-wood in his bag... I've been using a 7-wood for years and a few years ago when defending my club championship I got my first and - so far - my only hole-in-one on a 182 yard par-3 using my 7-wood!! I wasn't able to successfully defend it, but that was OK. I got something better... Also, on par-5's, my 5-wood or 7-wood are the best clubs for me to hit my 2nd shot and position myself to hit the green in regulation. Gotta love it!! Thank you Ali for all your tips.
This is a great video, went and got custom fitted for ping 425 max driver and 3 wood, I'm 50 now and recovering from cancer so my swing speed now is around 85mph, tried the 3 wood and couldn't hit it, so tried the 5 wood and crushed it every time 200 yards, so great video Ali
Great video Ali. I ditched my 3w and replaced with a 5w about 18 month ago. Now hit it consistently around the 210-215yd mark, but it offers a more versatility.... and it's easier to get up in the air!
I am 65 now and Ive got light shafts on the driver and 4 wood and 7wood and 30gr hybrid and I love it.Thank you Cobra for the adjustable heads on my F9s
I always use the 5 wood off the deck now instead of the 3 wood as the 5 wood carries further. I am 72 and can get about 190 yds yds from 5 wood. Love your videos Ali. Will use your tips to get more consistency.
Good tips for my 3wd. I have had troubles off the deck. I manage to smash it when it’s teed. My confidence has waned with inconsistency with the fairway woods but I’ll give the tips a go at the range and course next week. Off-topic point for your videos: the ‘Ali’ and ‘golf’ in yellow in your wall logo gets washed out on the video. Darker colours would pop. Cheers.
I carry a 3 hybrid (18 degree), a 4 hybrid (21degree), and a 5 hybrid (24 degree). My lowest iron begins at 6. I have a 3hl FW (17 degree), a 5 FW (19 degree), and a 7 FW (21 degree). I can switch out between the FWs. Which FW would you recommend I use in conjunction with my hybrids? I am a senior with a slower swing speed.
Thank you for another very Informative video. Truly appreciated. I find that my skills at using my Driver are well below average. So recently I've been hitting my 3 wood off the tee for about 225. But you're correct. I'm not very consistent with my 3 wood off the fairway or out of light rough. So I've filled my bag with long irons. I have success with my 2, 3, and 4 irons. But i'm considering upgrading to a 19 degree hybrid to replace the 2 iron. Hopefully it'll be a little easier hitting out of the rough with a hybrid. Unfortunately I haven't had much success with hybrids before, so i'm not sure if the woods and hybrids have the same hitting technique? Keep up the great work, cheers!
Great advice! Have a 5 and 7 wood that I use off the deck-especially on tight lies- because of the reasons you cited. Keep the 3 in the bag but only use it off a tee if my driver is acting up or on a narrow fairway.
Loved this video , hit the nail on the head regarding the 3 wood off the deck , picked up a couple of golden nuggets of info through out the video. Got to say the presentation and delivery was brilliant had a smile on my scouse face from start to finish . AliTaylorGolf is top of my training videos as of now !
Great video. As a new golfer I was really struggling with the 3 wood to the point I wouldn't use it at all. Recently I bought a Callaway Big Bertha 5 wood and the difference was immediate - the ball was now going into the air and making much more distance. After watching your video I am now considering buying a 7 wood.
I only carry a 12.5 Driver and a 7 wood for years. Got rid of the 3 and 5 and my game improved 7 to 9 strokes and now scoring in the high 80. I am 74 years old. Great video.
Very good video Ali. I went one step further and got fitted for a Ping G425 9 Wood (set at standard 23.5 loft). My new favourite club and wouldn’t change it for anything.
Great tip Ali, ideal for slicers but I'd love to know how to hit a baby fade into a right to left sloping fairway. Fed with losing balls in left bushes especially in summer on rock hard fairways that never stop running! Cheers Steve
I use a 17degree cleveland fl launcher 3wood with the miayazaki c Kua 43 A Flex shaft for driving and fairways And have a 7 wood too .Love them . Great video thanks
Interesting. Would have liked to see more swings at your normal speed considering that’s where I fall. Been flirting with the idea of 7 wood to replace my 3h just can’t find a lefty 425 at the moment. Currently carry my 3 wood 255 and close to 265-270 total. 3h is a 220-225 club for me which leaves me a rather large gap. Myself I may need to look a dropping the 3w for a 5w and add a 7w in place of the 3h just to eliminate that dreaded snap hook that shows itself from time to time. Good video. Definitely got me thinking about my gapping at the top end. May turn the loft up on the 3w before kicking it out the bag and see what results come from that and if it closes the gap a bit. Appreciate your videos always get me thinking about what I can do to get my equipment to work better and more consistent for my needs
Sounds like we have similar games and distances - you are maybe 7-10 yards longer. I recently re-did the long end of the bag after much thought and this is what I came to. 1) 3-wood gone, replaced with Mizuno CLK #2 16-degree hybrid, with the Tensei White 90gram TX-Stiff Shaft, playing 1-inch shorter, and open 2-clicks to 14-degrees. This is an anti-left setup being fully opened and also shorter, thus flatter, at 40-inches - this would be 1-iron length. It is fantastic off a tiny tee on tight Par 4s where you can peel a 7-yard fade off your start-line, it carries about 235, but will roll about 20-30 yards. That Tensei White TX flex shaft, is a non-upcharge option only on their hybrids, actual weight is 94-grams, so the club has a substantial feel and the shaft keeps everything very in control - I call the club my driving-hybrid. It is also easy to hit off the deck - but peak heigh will be mid-range at 70-85 feet - it is so much easier to hit consistently than a driving iron. 2) The Mizuno CLK #3 19-degree hybrid, same Tensei White TX shaft, but stock length, so actually 1/2" longer than the #2 hybrid. I set the club 1-click open at 18-degrees, which is 5wood loft, but being 1-click open, it definitely has left-protection built-in. I can draw the club when needed, but I prefer a stock 5-7 yard high fade, I'll use it from 215-230 carry - and again with that shaft and 1-click open, you really feel you can go at it if you need another few yards. 3) I then use a #4 Taylormade GapR High 22-Degree, set open and also Upright to 21-degrees with a 100gram X-Flex Steelfiber shaft at 39.5"-length (2-iron length). This is my 205-215 high flighted club, that I wanted it slightly upright so I knew I had a draw club in the bag (this would be my 7-wood type club at 21-degrees). Playing at 39.5"s versus a 7wood which would be 42'ish, it won't be as high flighted, but it is plenty high enough to stop on any green, and I feel more controllable at that playable length. I really like my top end of the bag now. I feel I can really go at both Mizuno hybrids and they won't go left, which my Callaway Subzero 5wood, even with an x-flex shaft could easily do, and I have that 7wood type club, but one that is more controllable with shorter & heavier shaft. I'm a 4-handicap and I feel confident I can improve from here.
Yep! Spot on. Have been using 7w & 9w for years with great success. More reliable than 3w. My wife's fave wood is a Ping K15 5w; she's deadly with it. cheers OB1
Great video. Makes perfect sense. I am going to add a 5 wood. Brushed off the old Titleist 7 wood. May just use my 4 & 3 wood off the tee. I'm 64... Not trying to impress anyone. Just play better golf. Again, great content!
I switched from 3 wood to a 5 wood about a month ago. I was looking for reliable 250 club The 3 wood was just a little too much if I really connected with it and was giving me trouble if i backed off too much on the swing. I do have issues when it’s really windy having the ball that high up in the air
Ali, great video thank you. 7 wood looks like a great option for me, a 28 handicapper. Would you recommend instead of a hybrid club and what’s the difference other than the hybrid being a stronger loft? Branding? On trend etc?
Thanks Ali, great video, I have a 4 wood that I hit almost same distance as 3 wood, do you think 5 wood is still be better than 4 wood, I do have a 5 wood (Old Taylor Made Burner) please adivse
I have an old 5w and a 4hybrid I can't hit either so will try this.. have definitely thought about a 7w.. currently I slice driver then am limited to 5i down... yes very much beginner
Great video. I only hit at 75 mph so your video shows me what I could do. I only have a 3 wood, if I hit it well it goes 160/170 but more often than not I don’t hit it well and I go 50 yards.
I gave up my woods. Driver, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 hybrids. I was RE-evaluating and thinking about a 3 wood back in my bag for a little more distance. I rarely hit my 3 wood, it’s so old (looks like new). It’s the Nike Sumo😂. Was thinking about a Taylormade SIM2 3 wood, thoughts?
I have all three and adding 9 wood. I don't know where I heard it. "If you can't get there with a 3 wood then hit the 5 wood instead" for better flight and direction.
Got new clubs 5-AW. I opted for a 5 wood as 3 wood does not work great for me as I have a hard time with them from the fairway. The 5 wood has been great
One of your best - really helps that you can vary clubhead speed but keep a good strike to show what results different players will get. I abandoned 3 wood for par 5s this year - only use it off a tee on shorter or dogleg par 4s now and use 3h or 5h on par 5s to lay up in the best position, not the most distance. Will replace top end of bag later this year and definitely will be getting fitted so I get the right mix of 5/7 wood and 3/4/5 hybrid to optimize gapping from driver to 5i. Hoping 5 wood off the tee will still work for par 4s.
I started to carry a 4 and 7 wood rather than 3 and 5 and have had much better luck off the fairway and the 7 is really easy in cases where I'm just not getting what I want from lower loft
I am a woman golfer and use a 4 iron hybrid. I get better distance with this than either my 3 or 5. Plus I can hit it out of some mean rough. There isn't enough golf info for women out there!!
Hey Ali, great video. Still think having a 3 wood is important for those shorter par 4’s where driver may be too much. I have been thinking of replacing one of my hybrids with a 5 wood. Your video convinced me that 5 wood is the way to go.
My 3 wood is just too valuable to me off the tee to ever get rid of it. PING G400 is point and shoot. I hit it off the fairway and even out of the rough but I make sure there’s not a ton of trouble up ahead of I’m gonna pull the 3 wood for a second shot.
I could not hit my Big Bertha B21 3 Wood at all. Traded in my 3 Wood for a 5 Wood and it is like night and day. I have been able to reach the green in 2 shots on 3 Par 5s in my last two rounds and I even hit a ball into the hole from 188 yards away on a Par 4 after a horrible Tee Shot that I hit into the ground. 5 Wood - Problem Solved!!!!!!
I have trouble hitting any fairway wood. But I will worry on what you said about hitting it like an iron. But I am 77 years old and they say it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
5 wood always always in the bag......3 wood nah. I rip the skin off the balls with 5. Ali, keep up the wonderful content. It s like you speak for me......hehe.
Why would anyone get any more emotional about which club they use than they would about which socket they would put on their wrench to tighten or loosen a bolt? It's just a tool. If a Driver, 3, 5, or 7 wood or a P,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 iron is needed, use it. It's just a stick. Or, if you're really passionate, it's just a !#$%^& stick!! Now go play golf. Have fun. Play fast. Don't b!tch.

Really like your videos. Your explanations work well for me!
Glad you like them!
I used to have 3, 5, 7 & 9 woods. Replaced them all with hybrids. But I still carry a 9-degree fairway wood that I love.

Scottsdale custom build option about 3 to 4 week wait from ping I have 9 7 and 3 425 max's believe the hype they're awesome
Awesome tips, thanks!
Yep! Spot on. Have been using 7w & 9w for years with great success. More reliable than 3w. My wife's fave wood is a Ping K15 5w; she's deadly with it. cheers OB1
I have 3, 5, and 7 woods, and I love all of them. Thanks for fine tuning my technique, however, and perhaps I will be able to use them better.
I love my 7 wood. Its an older Callaway club.
I was considering a 3 hybrid, but now I have two more options to consider. Thanks!
Great Video Ali, keep them coming, good advice and content
I have a Ping 425 Max 5 Wood and set the loft at 16.5. Works great!!!! I carry the 5 & 7 Woods.
So you brought the degrees down by one?? Thanks
Great video. Makes perfect sense. I am going to add a 5 wood. Brushed off the old Titleist 7 wood.
May just use my 4 & 3 wood off the tee.
I'm 64... Not trying to impress anyone. Just play better golf. Again, great content!
Doing a 10 yds shot with full swing in one try requires some skill. Nice!
I switched from 3 wood to a 5 wood about a month ago. Brb, heading to return my 3 wood!
Last year I took the 3 wood out of the bag and put in a 5 wood. I didn't lose any distance, but improved my strike consistency.
Thanks Ali, great video, I have a 4 wood that I hit almost same distance as 3 wood, do you think 5 wood is still be better than 4 wood, I do have a 5 wood (Old Taylor Made Burner) please adivse
What would be the yardage of a 5 wood compared to a 5 iron and a 7 wood to a 7 iron?
I have a 4 wood bent to a 3.5 wood, 7 wood and a great 9 wood that drops the ball on the green, bounces once and stops dead.
I actually went Driver, 4 Wood, 7 wood. Par 5's can now be reached in two shots with a higher percentage.
Thanks for the tip should I carry a 5&7?
I have a Ping 5 Wood coming adjusted to a 2deg. flatter lie. If I chose to order a Ping 7 Wood, would I ask for the same adjustment?
I have an old 5w and a 4hybrid I can't hit either so will try this.. have definitely thought about a 7w.. currently I slice driver then am limited to 5i down... yes very much beginner
Is your 3 wood shorter than standard? I'm curious about the possible benefit of shortening my 3 wood shaft...
Great video. I only hit at 75 mph so your video shows me what I could do. I only have a 3 wood, if I hit it well it goes 160/170 but more often than not I don’t hit it well and I go 50 yards.

Can you please make a video for hitting a 3 wood or 5 wood off the tee for Par 3 holes ?
I had a 7 wood 25 years ago and was shamed out of using it. Now that I'm a senior it's my favorite club
I got rid of my 3 wood and use my 5 wood I don't get as far but find it easy to hit and control what would be your normal distance with the 5 wood ?
I've had such a hard time catching ball first. Might be why I try sweeping to hit higher on the face.
Got the 3 & 7 g425 love both
What about a 3W off the tee? Hit down or sweep up?
Hey Ali, great video. Still think having a 3 wood is important for those shorter par 4’s where driver may be too much. I have been thinking of replacing one of my hybrids with a 5 wood. Your video convinced me that 5 wood is the way to go.
Love my ping g425 7 wood 😍
I am new to the game. But I love my 7 wood. People give me such looks. Lol
A 3 wood is not an easy club to play with!
The new drivers are so accurate that i don't need a 3 wood in my bag any more. 5 Wood, 7 Wood and 4 Hybrid.
Wowwww I just bought a brand new marvik 3 wood should have bought the 5 or 7 wood instead. Still can't get the distance I need with that 3 wood..
Perfect, have always hit 5 better than 3. Might look at getting a 7. Lol. Chow
My 3 wood is just too valuable to me off the tee to ever get rid of it. PING G400 is point and shoot. I hit it off the fairway and even out of the rough but I make sure there’s not a ton of trouble up ahead of I’m gonna pull the 3 wood for a second shot.
I notice you have a flightscope as well as a trackman. Is the flightscope available to buy?
It’s not mine I’m afraid. It belongs to Herons Reach where I’m based
I could not hit my Big Bertha B21 3 Wood at all.
My burner 7W is my most reliable club now and I've only had it a month
I have trouble hitting any fairway wood. But I will worry on what you said about hitting it like an iron. But I am 77 years old and they say it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
My go to 3 is a Rescue 3. It excels on both fairway and higher cuts. I aim towards the front of the ball. This works well for all angles of attack.
If VJ Singh can put a 7 wood in his bag, me too!
I hit my three wood straight as a bullet. I swing it just like a long iron. I have long arms and had it shortened one inch.
as a senior golfer, the 3 wood is of no use to me... 5 wood flies truer, extra yards mean nothing if off line in the tight fairways around here...
5 wood always always in the bag......3 wood nah. I rip the skin off the balls with 5. Ali, keep up the wonderful content. It s like you speak for me......hehe.
I gonna give the three wood a couple of more rounds before it goes into the ebay stack
Give it a try and let me know how it goes
I watched this video and the only thing I crush is candy.
do it on grass please Ali
Only way to get a 7 wood in Sweden is too order it from the manufacturer. Then you can't try it.
14° 3W? That doesn't seem to help. Traditionally they were 16° as is mine.
Why would anyone get any more emotional about which club they use than they would about which socket they would put on their wrench to tighten or loosen a bolt? It's just a tool.
