Amphicar - The Car That's Also A Boat | RIDICULOUS RIDES

- WOULD you drive your car into the ocean? Say hello to the 'Amphicar' - an amphibious vehicle that can be driven into the body of any water. In the 1960s, West German designer Hans Trippel presented the 'Amphicar' in New York. Only 3,878 units were ever built by manufacturer Quandt Group between 1960 and 1965. But Kerry Cheese, who restores military vehicles for a living, bought one of these rare cars from Canada and spent around £35,000 to bring it back to its original state.

I still can't believe these never became mainstream. Who doesn't want one. Same with flying cars.
Building a safe and practical flying car is exponentially more difficult than building an amphibious car. Boats are relatively simple things that are cheap to produce compared to aircraft. Anything that flies is going to take a lot more training to safely operate than something that floats. Just imagine how many deaths there would be if "anyone" could just hop into a flying car and take off.
LBJ had one. When he had guests over, he'd drive into his lake while screaming that his brakes had failed.
Lol seriously??
yeah i was there
I’m absolutely MAD for these cars!!! I WILL have one one day!!!
Me too!
There was one of these in my town back in the 1970's. My brothers and I always got a big charge out of seeing it.
They used one on candid camera one time. they had different people telling the driver that the bridge was out and the driver said oh it's no problem I can just drive across. In the water? Yeah. The looks on their faces. 😆
It's a real shame that these cars didn't sale as well as they should've when they were first introduced
In sake of being amphibious you are both not being good at the road and in water.
You have to choose one to be good at it and people usually drive cars on the road.
I agree. Even though more gimmicky than serious engineering, it’s a great, fun piece of kit. I think if they’d stayed with it, they could have improved the engineering and made them more of a serious form of transportation!
@@owain_glyndwr That's for sure. It definitely wasn't made to replace your normal car, it's just a fun car. which is why it didnt sell, people need necessities over gadgets and this is more of a toy
Got one in my garage now, same color, just newer chrome and cleaner
Lucky bastard, I've always wanted one
No you dont lol
Newer chrome and cleaner than a fully restored one?
I saw one growing up in the 60s, while our family were on our Dixie boat. It was so cool😎 never forgot it. One of these cars are in a foreign film call The Laughing Woman, with Dagmar Lassander!
Definitely an alternative universe where people are named Kerry cheese and cars can swim
That name tho 🤣
Maybe on you're narrow minded universe
Disney springs (Orlando location0 has some of these at the boathouse restaurant
I saw it to
That is great knowledge! I am in LA but visit FLA yearly.
I can not tell if the propellers are plastic or painted. My mother remembers an uncle of hers owned one. The first vidoe of my "AMPHICAR" collection.
If I remember the original examples had metal probably a replacement part or required under British boating laws
I must ride in one of these asap!!
I wish my Mustang convertible was amphibious
It is, but only once.
I love it wouldn’t mind having 1
This needs to be in pimp my ride!!! Lol
Wow!
Want it!
Cool
What was the Austin motor in this vehicle
Typical triumph like a spitfire engine takes forever to get it restarted LOL
Pretty neat huh ?
looking good
Well they are boxy looking.
never worry about drowning
There are so few left, not only because many of them sank, but the body also tended to rot. I always wondered why there were no foam floatation panels in the upper half of the body panels, as many boats have, in case the worst happened.
@@elultimo102 thank you for the information
Chiec nay ve vn hop li
Wasn't this on top gear?
I don’t know. There was one on Wheeler Dealers.
James may tested one on 'James Mays cars of the people'
How visionary, the solution for all those worried about 'global warming', 'global cooling' and 'climate change'. Might need a roof though to provide protection from the 'Ozone Hole' 🤣
This is where cars peaked.
"Kerry Cheese" sounds like the name of someone who would own one of these...
