Thanks mate. Yes I didn’t end up with axalotles. Just white clouds and a yabbie. Temperature doesn’t fluctuate as much during the day as I expected, but does from summer to winter. Plants in the filter really struggled but the ones in the pipe work were great. This experiment has since ended and the pond now has returned to a bog filter and is home to rice fish.

Really interesting video. Have you thought of putting some of these lily basket filters into a bog filter? Seems like there wouldn't be any downside, besides water possibly flowing too fast. What if within the different layers of a bog, you added layers of kitty litter and laterite within the bog?
I did try the baskets in my dream pond bog filters. I ran this experiment for 18 months I didn’t achieve great results. There are a few follow up videos if you are interested.
I believe Dr. Novak found that the anoxic bacteria were only present in a thin layer just below the outer surface of the clay. If that is the case would it be better to have many smaller say net bags filled with the media set in a rack with a small separation between bags giving a larger sub-surface area for this reaction to occur? I also see people having good results in bags by just mixing the iron together with the clay into a homogeneous mixture rather than a core of iron. I was hoping to build my pond this year but here in upstate NY it has been raining almost everyday. I am glad I didn't get started too early, it would be a mud bog by now. I have a question. What do you think of the following?: What if one were to incorporate the anoxic basket at the beginning or end of a bog “channel” style run? I’m envisioning creating a natural pool from an old chlorine one. Looking to build raised bed style channels along the side of the pool. These would have pond liner and gravel fill for the water to pass through. Water Plants growing on top of the beds. A waterfall at the end of the run. But would another chamber at the terminus be useful with some anoxic baskets? Combining bog with anoxic is the main question.
Thanks for the reply. So adding the anoxic baskets at the end of the run to remove remaining ammonia (before spilling back into the swimming pool) would be redundant due to the bog? Thinking of starting with minnows, and frogs then trying a couple of turtles and working up to a few medium size fish. Also thinking of a waterfall from two 55gal drum filters filled with DIY bio balls. And a gravel bed over milkcrates in one section of the pool’s floor. Three-pronged approach with an intake from either end of the pool for circulation. Great channel by the way. Thanks for all the info. You’ve inspired a lot of people.
Both are biological filters so as long as they are sized and designed correctly for the pond, both will remove ammonia, nitrite and even nitrate. There’s nothing wrong with adding them both the more biological filtration the better. My point is that could simply be a bigger bog or more bcb’s in your anoxic filter. Or you could add both. It’s just not going to change the fact that both accomplish the same thing. I guess if you add both you can decide which one you find easier to maintain. 👍
Have you ever built a pond not using rubber or plastic liners? I am going to try a small pond with a pure clay lining, then a simple wire mesh and cement using the Italian cement formula with Lime Slag that chrystalizes and fills cracks. . . maybe
Hi Kev, Thanks for sharing. Could you do an update video on the effects of the anoxic filter on your nitrates & other parameters & on the fish health. Thanks. 👍
Well the anoxic filter works great with high flow. I’m not sure why but that’s according to Dr Novak’s tests. I want to try it with no flow in a pond but that will be in the near future so no results as yet. If you want a low flow filter you can’t beat a bog in my opinion 👍
This is awesome! I would love to see your trial for an anoxic pond with just a solar pump. I currently have a stock tank with everything raised up on milk crates inside. Aside from the need for gravity to move the water, is there a reason that one would not just put the anoxic bits in the pond itself?
I’m trying it in this pond. It also has a false bottom. Wine Barrel Pond| No Pump ruclips.net/video/kzBVcdPaZL0/видео.html. There is an update video also 👍
You’ve done an excellent job explaining this type system. I see a very similar set up for a large aquarium with a large, heavy waste producing cichlid with success in dropping the nitrate levels so far. I wish you luck as well. I’m very interested in the fish you select and the ponds success. I’ll keep an eye on your progress.
Good info mate ! Thanks . But i have a doubt, if i put the ironite .. could it to do a peak of some parameters? I’m afraid to go worst in my parameters waiting while the anoxic filter becomes mature .. what you think ?
I wouldn’t worry to much. You still have plenty of normal aerobic bacteria in the pond it will keep doing it’s thing while the anoxic filter establishes. All the fish in this pond are still happy. Hope that helps 👍
In your bog filter, you may be reading zero nitrates as the plants may simply be consuming ammonia, thereby avoiding any further conversion to nitrite/nitrate. Plants are many times more efficient at metabolising ammonia than nitrite/nitrate.
Yess!!! I’d love a no electricity pond. 😅 I’m really interested in your hydroponics set up. Did you ever try veggies by that process? I forgot the name of your other channel. You must make a video. My pond is almost ready. I got impatient and filled the water and some plants before putting all the stones. Im getting them in my boot daily ha ha ha ! Will start the bog filter by today 🤞🏼. Im gonna try my Danios n gold fish in the pond. I get exactly the same temps as you so let’s see. I still thinking about the Pleco…dunno if it will survive the winters and it creates more muck than it cleans imo…will have to return it to the fish shop otw…
We tried veggies but i found it harder than I thought it would be. I always had certain nutrient deficiencies, pest problems in the end we decided to just grow the veggies in wicking beds and keep impatiens, looks great and are easy.
Do you think it would be ok to use an anoxic basket in conjunction with my bog filter as a means to combat algae? I have been considering submerging the basket just beneath where my water returns to my pond.
Would love to see this in a no pump application. Water can freeze more than 60cm where I am so cannot run any surface pump in the winter. If this works, it would solve many problems for me.
I wonder what the effect would be on a larger sized pond if you used a bog/waterfall filter at the top end and a one of these filters at the other end near the skimmer… it could even have the water slowly pass by them before it enters the skimmer.
Sounds like a cool idea. I do know dr Novak prefers that any solids and debris are removed first. I’m not sure why it matters , he specifically says the baskets won’t clog.
my temps get down to 8 white clouds are ok so are rice fish danios not so much but my aussie bass are ok so are silver perch & murray cod next winter im going to test out the murray river rainbows now ive got numbers & i think ill give the pumpless basket idea a go it might reduce my algae blooms im already trying the anoxic plenum idea in a tank in my fish room
I’m always trying different methods. I find it fun. Yes all my ponds with bog filters have little to no nitrates, but I also don’t overstock them. One bcb is supposed to be enough for one large koi fish. I didn’t have a great deal of success with the anoxic filter, this pond has returned to a bog filter.
@Ozponds thank you for the reply. I will be doing some experiments with the bog filter myself. I tried for over 3 years with different bcb filters and several other setups recommended by the Dr. K. With absolutely 0% success. Thank you for the information. I will let you know my results.🫰🫰🫰
Hi I am hoping this works. Like I shared before I have koi and is currently over stocked. @@Ozponds it's quite a setup just to try, I imagine that if it was as performant as advertised it would already be the norm and we wouldn't even ask questions... 🫤
The "no pump" approach sounds a bit dicey to me. There wouldn't be any mechanical filtration, and this type of filter seems very passive in its operation without a pump. I wonder how pumpless operation would affect the fish per filter size ratio.
The kitty litter is used because it’s 100% clay. I do believe you can use anything that is 100% clay. People use oil-dri as it’s also 100% clay. I’m no expert on these filters, I’m just playing around with them to see how the compare to other filters. But my guess would be that your soil isn’t 100% clay there will be other things in it.
I’m not sure. Sounds like you know more than me. This is my first experience with this type of filter. I just remember when I was struggling to find a suitable kitty litter, I thought I read about zeolite as an option, but perhaps I was wrong.
@@Ozponds gotcha!! I have a question if you don't mind. I can't seem to find a straight answer...how do you or what do you do with the liner edge tuck under, leave laying flat, etc. I'm so lost on the last bit of my new pond build also have a low spot to deal with.
I’ve talked about it in a few vids. I think the last one was the stream vid. If not I’ve got one on edge treatments. Obviously you need it higher than water level. I find it easiest if you can cut the liner off upright about 4-6 inches above water level. Folding and tucking always seems to lead to leaks at least for me it does. Once you have it nice and upright it’s pretty easy to disguise with rocks, plants, pebbles, driftwood, etc.
Pacific blue eyes? Hey Kev, I notice you have heaps of fish in your other ponds how do you build up the populations of fish without spending a fortune. I put 20 fish into my new pond and the population seems to shrink at an alarming rate.
I’m worried about winter temps for the blue eyes. I’m not a fish expert so I tend to just keep hardy, easy to care for species. I think the ecosystem helps, everything in balance.

@@Ozponds it's quite a setup just to try, I imagine that if it was as performant as advertised it would already be the norm and we wouldn't even ask questions...
🫤
The set up isn’t very hard. I was curious to see if it was as good as Dr Novak said.
The "no pump" approach sounds a bit dicey to me. There wouldn't be any mechanical filtration, and this type of filter seems very passive in its operation without a pump. I wonder how pumpless operation would affect the fish per filter size ratio.
Yeah I don’t imagine using it to keep a big koi without any circulation…but a few small fish
Does the cat litter material used contain zeolite?
I can’t remember.
@@Ozponds ok sir
You can use zeolite, most cat litter uses calcium bentonite or sodium bentonite. It all basically does the same thing.
White Cloud Mountain minnows!! And a couple axolotes
I’ve been doing some research on axies I’m a little worried if the flow might be too much for them.
How long is the kitty litter and iron good for ?
Dr Novak claims the clay is good for over 10 years (I think) the iron source should be replaced every couple of years if theres plants in the baskets.
My soill is all clay is there an alternative to use clay instead of kitty litter?
The kitty litter is used because it’s 100% clay. I do believe you can use anything that is 100% clay. People use oil-dri as it’s also 100% clay. I’m no expert on these filters, I’m just playing around with them to see how the compare to other filters. But my guess would be that your soil isn’t 100% clay there will be other things in it.
Have these BCBs matured and doin their thing?
I’ve done a couple of updates. 👍
do they have epdm liner with camouflage colors?
Not to my knowledge. But you never know.
@@Ozponds it could be much better looking for the pond with less covering
I don’t mind the black. It looks mysterious. It makes colourful fish stand out.
you did it...!
Yes. 👍
hi oz
what can we use if we are unable to find kitty litter in our area ??
please help
I was thinking zeolite, when I was struggling to find a good kitty litter.
@@Ozponds but don't you think zeolite is not a good option as we need to recharge it again and again
I’m not sure. Sounds like you know more than me. This is my first experience with this type of filter. I just remember when I was struggling to find a suitable kitty litter, I thought I read about zeolite as an option, but perhaps I was wrong.
I'm so confused 😕 song on pump is being used?
😂 and now I’m confused…what is a song on pump?
@@Ozponds lol song isn't supposed to be there! It's supposed to say...so no pump is being used.
Ah gotcha. A pump is being used and is recommended. I want to test it without one in the future. So the baskets would sit in the pond itself.
How is this filtration going ?
So so. I’m in the process of making an update.
@@Ozponds I’m upgrading a new pond soon for my goldfish and thinking of using this filtration so was keen to see how it works 👏🏽👏🏽😉
It does work. But I still like bog filters better.
@@Ozponds I did try a bog and have one running on my patio ponds but I think it runs to fast to be effective, I have never really had the reduction in nitrates , water is crystal clear no algae but I can get my nitrates down . If I turn the pump down I don’t get a lot of flow for aeration so I’m mot sure what I’m doing wrong .
Oranda and not just ordinary goldfish
I find that goldfish don't do very well with temperatures that fluctuate wildly.
@@Ozponds if it goes below 13 degrees Celsius than goldfish can't handle but if they are in water which is same and recirculating for a longer period even before beginning of winters they can handle upto 13 degrees., Anyways your video was amazing, and really knowledgeable thanks for creating such a video 👍 man ❤️🙏🔥🎉
Liked for suree👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks mate. I really appreciate it 👍
Pacific blue eyes ??
Maybe. I’m a bit worried about the winter temps though. They don’t naturally occur this far south.
Kev put koi they eat and 💩 alot and really need good water quality to thrive
I’d love to try it on koi. But koi are illegal where I live.
@@Ozponds 😳🤯🤔🤔🤔
This is a thinker…. be cool if it works though!
Zebra Danio's should survive if white clouds do
Yes! I think I’d like to try the danios.
White clouds 24k
😂 maybe just 1k
Goldfish bro
Bit late to the party. It has a bunch of white clouds and a yabbie called “Neville”.
The clay you used seems too big. Anoxic conditions may not happen in the bcb. This is not an exacting science. Good luck.
Thanks mate. This is all trail and error for me at this stage.
@@Ozponds It's trial and error for everyone except the mighty Dr. Novak. I hope it works. If in case it doesn't don't waste time hunting kitty litter. Look for oildri industrial absorbent. It's the same thing, even oil dri sells kitty litter. It's just good old baked clay.
Mosquito fish
I can’t do mosquito fish they are illegal here in Australia sorry.
rice fish is not a good test , that fish can even survive in bowl of water , of all the fish , goldfish/koi will be the ultimate test , mass waste producers , lol
There’s white clouds in there. Heaps of them. Lots of food going in. The food going in is a good enough test for my purposes. But as of right now I’m not overly impressed.
