Ralph is from the eastside of detroit his father was a gifted musician as well. I know him personally he use to come over my house and he would play bass my brother was on bongos and I played drums. We both went to the same music school Fortuna on harper. Last time I talked to Ralph he told me the man was still alive. In my neighborhood we had fantastic 4 sweet baby James. Laura lee and a couple more local entertainers that live around the corner from me.
Ralphe Armstrong is the most knowledgeable human on earth in the complete understanding of the Bass!! He’s never been a player I sought to imitate, however he is a guru of bass and it’s complete history. He’s a Warwick endorses, he’s also I wouldn’t say underrated but he’s a hundred times better than many others with big names. I’m sorry I’m not trying to say anything about any of the greats I am simply stating that Ralphe is a super monster that so many have overlooked! Peace and love

Same here........I had a couple years or so under my belt before I heard him for the 1st time on the Apocalypse album and saw him live for the first time in 1974. I wanted to pull the frets out of my bass after listening to him.
What a monster lineup. I've seen Jean-Luc Ponty with Ralphe Armstrong on bass and Rayford Griffin on drums = Live . . . and it was Phenomenal. oNe LovE from NYC
I was at this concert and it was good seeing Ralph Armstrong play with JLP veterans Rayford and Jamie...loved every minute and Evan was fantastic he blended well with the seasoned musicians
Was there too. Great venue, right on the water. Evan Garr is the future. He's just talent. All in all a great show. Went with my buddy from California, who loves but never saw jean luc live. He was blown away.
No, I think Evan has his own sound; been listening to Luc-Ponty for decades now and I really don't hear the comparison. Not to take from Luc-Ponty because he is a great violinist in his own right, but I think they both have their own sound. 11-12-23.@@deee.9779
OMG I was at Chene Park for his concert in 2005 I think. I tried to return. Jamie Glaser is back for this?.....Awesome...He played with a lot of acts. And JLP is an icon!!!! I'm a violinist and...when someone like Jean can make it look easy playing the violin....They are a master. He is smooth like no other! When you can play every rift without moving your body to every note...Its a skill like no other. Thank you for posting.
just wonderful to a great performer like Jean-Luc Ponty along with Evan Garr. Just one of the best shows at Chene Park every year.( Saw them together Last year at Chene Park ) Just great talent. Dorothy Wadley
1983 @ The Front Row Theater in Ohio...Baron Brown and Scott Henderson on Bass and GTR..Jean Luc stopped the show during "Beach Girl"and told the audience one more flash bulb and "We Are Done Playing"And so it was!!!Not one more was set off..Yeah he was kind of pricky about it but hey,it my name or reputation in lights or in the paper the next day when they slight your band for being "So-so"...Great show as far as the 2,000 paying fans were concerned.......Critics...Who needs them?Maybe if they learned to play an instrument rather than playing with themselves they would be less bitter?
I just KNEW on first site of this vid that Evan must be a Beast on violin to walk on stage with Mr Ponty! JLP is the Hendrix of electric violin! Evan might be the Eddie Van Halen! Smokin'' show.. Wish I could of been there!
Ralphe Armstrong was a huge influence on my bass playing direction when I started playing in the early 70's I loved his tone and his style. He could breath life into that Fender Frettless he played. I even named my '73 Volkswagen bug after him . I have to tell you though.........his tone here sounds horrible and his playing sounds like 100 % ego based...........so different than how cleverly and tastefully he once played. Oh well.
Yep, gotta agree on that coco bass. I was blown away by his sound on his fretless P Bass, and his style & timing with Mahavisnu Orchestra. A very inspiring player for me…😎🎸🙏🏼

Ralph is GOD but his sound is better on the Gibson fretless ... like in Studio Sunset Drive or Ponty Live record ...

First solo I transcribed in 1984 ( I knew only Minor/major/pentatonics) ... I became Bass player in part because Mr Armstrong😊😊😊
Ponty did an album with Grappelli in the 70’s, this duet reminds me of that, but it’s more open, loose and great generous communication 🌹🌹
Detroit has something in their water. They have some VERY scary good players coming out of that area.

Ralph Armstrong is a monster player. Just being honest - he chose the wrong bass to play here. It sounded absolutely horrible.
