  • "Why do they all want to come to Europe? They’re not doing us any favours. I could go further but I’ll probably be arrested if I did."
With net migration at its highest level on record, Times Radio reporter, Jo Crawford, asks Richmond residents if they think they have been impacted by immigration.

I don't necessarily disagree there, Richmond is obviously a very affluent suburb, but then I live in a pretty nice part of the South, and I disagree 100% with all this mass immigration/migration into the UK, as I suspect if you interviewed a lot of people they would say the same, the people filmed here have blinkers on, and can't see whats happening right under their noses, or are just your typical woke leftie or were told NOT to be too damning or anti immigration, there has to be a stop to it and I suspect a future backlash if it doesn't end, or in another 25-30 years the UK will look like something from a Blade Runner or Mad Max future the way it's currently going.

If you really want to know if British people are happy with our high levels of immigration then we need to have a national poll or a referendum.

now Poland is prospering many Poles who’d moved to western Europe years ago have moved back to their homeland.
The Tories have introduced an uncapped points based system with a minimum salary of £20k! Totally backfired if reducing immigration was the objective. As I understand it removing the cap and reducing the proposed basic salary requirement was Johnson’s policy - idiot

I don't see anything bad about the recent migration figures. Splitting the migration into the three major categories: Humanitarian visas, Study visas and Work visas.
Humanitarian visas to Ukrainians, Hong Kongers and Afghans who served the British Embassy - I support. It's anomalous and temporary and I imagine majority of Ukrainians will leave once the conflict is resolved.
Students contribute £42 billion to our economy and ensure the financial viability of our universities. More importantly, they are educated and can speak English so can integrate into society. Less so sure about the ability to bring dependants but the government has already announced plans to restrict this going forward.
Lastly, 58% of the work visas are for people working in the health and social care sectors - sectors that desperately in need of people now to help the British people. 600,000 net migration is far lower than I expected, and we are getting people who contribute to the economy. If the Tories tackle the small boats and the grooming gangs from that religious group, then I will vote for them.

@KJ-js7pi Our universities existed happily long before we turned it into a mass international services industry. However, there are impacts here. Students have to live somewhere, and occupy houses in the private rental sector, or parents buy houses near the universities for their kids to live in and rent out the other rooms. It creates enormous pressure on stock and prices in university towns. Limited provision of halls by the universities compounds the problem. Independent 'Private Halls' have become more common, but they are often very expensive and home students struggle to pay it...I've had this difficulty with both my children. Limited University halls give priority to overseas students, and sometimes 1st or final year domestic students. Home students that dont have wealthier parents really do struggle to make ends meet, end up working hours that make keeping up with demanding study much more difficult and they also pay over the long term a significant portion of the costs. Whilst it is necessary, if 50% of school leavers do go on to university to study, to find a way to fund it, I'm not convinced that its overseas student fees that enable it. In the 80s, 20% went to uni, but we also had night school, and businesses that had better apprenticeship and continued study programmes. Business now depends on taxpayers and students to fund themselves and importing labour, skilled and unskilled, and does not invest adequately itself in the next generation of employees. Overseas students, like anyone else, need housing, healthcare, use transport etc. Whilst universities benefit as an industry, do they take enough responsibility and contribute enough through taxation to be a real net benefit, and if half your population have a degree, does it really uplift the salary prospects as it used to, or do you end up with the wage depressed and still paying a lot of money over your working life for the privilege of not making much difference to your long term prospects anymore?
I would like to see a proper analysis done, not to stop overseas students, but so we really do understand the impacts, costs and benefits for the entire model and see if we do have it right, or whether there are some things we need to tweak.

Just find it hilarious that the people that were complaining about immigration and the EU during brexit are the ones now complaining about immigration outside of European counties . The Tories have done a shambolic job of even controlling migration which is one of the few things we could have had total control post brexit. I enjoy diversity and different cultures and honestly don’t mind where this immigration comes from . But ultimately the funniest thing is you cut yourself off from the Europe which has more in common and culture similarities to the uk and you will need to fill the gap with other continents. And some of those really won’t be similar . And those are the brexiters that will complain that there are too many “clearly very visually different looking people “ in our country . They basically have voted for their their small minded reasons and got the worst outcome for them. 😂🤡👍

I think it's a disgrace that people fleeing wars and extreme poverty risk their lives to come to Europe and are turned away. I think Europe is on the wrong side of history with this and for sure, there will come a time when Europeans would seek to emigrate (due to future wars, climate change, declining economy ,etc) - these stories provide fodder for the rest of the world to be hostile towards them and not be so eager to help out.

@phampshire6864 I've lived elsewhere in the world over my lifetime, I think migration can be positive or negative depending on how its managed. You have to be able to keep up with speed and capacity for infrastructure and services. You also have to be mindful of the serious damage that can happen to other countries when they lose up to 20% of their population, just like too fast growth can put pressure on resources in countries.
I would suggest though, as a Conservative, you should be asking yourself what conditions are your policies responsible for in terms of creating the 'underclass' you have such contempt for. What's your policy on schools, education, encouraging business to train and invest in the workforce and R&D, creating enough training places for doctors, teachers, nurses, business committing to localities instead of getting tax and investment breaks and then moving elsewhere. What have you done to replace the industry that was stripped from communities when mining was shut down so coal could be shipped from half way across the world instead? Why did you preside over the devastation of our nuclear power industry? Why did you create such appalling distortions in our economy to make it so services dependent? Why bemoan our own industry without acknowledging the enormous amount of state support business gets in other countries compared to UK business? Why did the conservatives flog ALL UK fishing licences and quota on the open market internationally nstead of protecting UK fishing industry, as other countries did in the EEC/EU?
So, I ask you, how much are you responsible for very, very bad policy that has created an 'underclass'?
I'm equally critical of Labour policy that consolidated the problems. What disgusts me from all parties is bad policy, what appalls me even more is your contempt for people who have taken the brunt of it.
