"He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" is a ballad written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell. Originally recorded by Kelly Gordon in 1969, the song became a worldwide hit for The Hollies later that year and a minor hit for Neil Diamond in 1970. In fact Mr. Russell wrote the lyrics while simultaneously suffering from cancer. And it was the last hit he ever wrote, as he died less than six months after its release.
I just listened to this by the Hollies, which is absolutely beautiful and wondered if they were the original artists and also wondered what the full story behind the song was. Thank you, Mary. 🥀
I cried listening to this cover, remember my brother passed away 2009. we're not so close each other, but he is a quiet calm man, he never talked much to me, but maybe that was how he loved me. we never argued, he just let me did what I want
I was the Camera/DP for this video, directed by Reto Caduff... It was the first time I met the band and it was an incredible experience... The 2nd time I met again the band was here in Los Angeles during the shooting of the EPK for "Human Zoo"
Diesem wunderschönen Song von the Hollies verleiht Steve Lee mit seiner tollen Stimme ganz dezent seine eigene Note. Für mich ist dieses Remake fast besser wie das Original. R. I. P. Steve Lee. Unglaublich trauriges Schiksal
The road is long with the many winding turns that leads us to who knows where? But I'm strong. Strong enough to carry him. He ain't heavy, he's my brother. So on we go. His welfare is my concern. No burden is his to bear. We'll get there. For I know he would not encumber me. He ain't heavy, he's my brother If I'm laden at all, I'm laden with the sadness that everyone's heart isn't filled with the gladness of love for one another. It's a long, long road from which there is no return. While we're on our way to there, why not share? And the load doesn't weigh me down at all. He ain't heavy, he's my brother.
The sign of a great band...they can go away from their comfort zones and still be great! What was with Steve will never be again...it was great and sometimes you just can't get that back. Just a piece of the puzzle that you have lost and the puzzle can't be completed without it.
This is why we are here. We are each other’s keeper, especially when no one else is. West Papua, abandoned by the world for 60 years. Genocide, ethnocide, ecocide. I stand by you. PAPUA MERDEKA!
Great band.me and my best mates all went into the Armed Forces. Your Vidio brings back memories. Scumping, breaking into derilict factory's abseiling from the skylight. Good training for what was to come. "Ha"
Just came across this video. As an alumnus father Flanagan's Boys Town and former choir member of the voices of Boys Town. I really approve of your recording and love the video.
Hello. Most people know this amazing song via The Hollies, and here the immortal Steve Lee sings this song with an incredible empathy and very beautiful. But very few are aware that this song was written by an American soldier during the Vietnam War. When he saw a thin little girl who drew a human from a burning shed, the soldier shouted at her, he died. She turned and said. It does not matter while sweat and tears are pouring down her thin dirty cheek. .... he is my brother ..
not true. Written by the US songwriters Bobby Scott and Bob Russell who were introduced to each other by Johnny Mercer, at a California nightclub. Although Russell was dying of lymphoma and the pair met only three times, they managed to collaborate on the song
James Wells, Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland, tells the story of a little girl carrying a big baby boy in his 1884 book The Parables of Jesus. Seeing her struggling, someone asked if she wasn't tired. With surprise she replied: "No, he's not heavy; he's my brother."[1] In a 1918 publication by Ralph Waldo Trine titled The Higher Powers of Mind and Spirit, he relates the following anecdote: "Do you know that incident in connection with the little Scottish girl? She was trudging along, carrying as best she could a boy younger, but it seemed almost as big as she herself, when one remarked to her how heavy he must be for her to carry, when instantly came the reply: 'He's na heavy. He's mi brither.'" References -> Wells, James (10 September 2010). The parables of Jesus. Retrieved 18 January 2012. Trine, Ralph Waldo (1918). The Higher Powers of Mind and Spirit. Che show!
I love this song and I must say this is a good cover, nothing amazing since the song is pretty much the same, but they certainly didn't ruin it like most covers do :)
