What made you decide to get the Arc Haul and not the Arc Blast......I'm trying to decide which one to get, my average weight is around 30 -33 pounds with food/water.
Great info and thank you Tim. Quick question, if you are doing a long distance hike do you ark it out every night and then bend it in the morning or do you leave it arced all night everyday. Just curious.
Didn't see an answer to your question, so I'm jumping in. My experience with the Arc Haul was using it on a 5 month thru-hike. I almost never collapsed the arc while I was on the trail. At night I'd place the pack on it's side (since there was no room in my tent to do otherwise) and drape my socks over the mesh back panel to assist with drying overnight. Keeping the arc under tension for long periods didn't cause any problems in my experience.
I just got the brand new REI Flash 45. I love it! They changed a lot from the old flash also, it looks more minimal and is super comfortable. Great alternative for people that can’t afford a ZPacks or other cottage gear bags.
It is the buckles they are not designed for the light webbing that is used in the UL packs. The pack that goes over the top allow you to over pack the pack after a resupply. Remember this pack is for thru hikers that need the room after a resupply. My polite jam pack is the same way for w weekend trip it look a bit dorky. But it is good when you bulk up.
There is a lot going on with this pack. I acknowledge that this pack will be good for only a thru-hike, maybe 2 if I'm lucky. It doesn't feel great with a pack weight 30+ lbs which would include food/water. my base weight is around 11.5-12 lbs for a 3 season kit.
I don’t think I would buy a zpacks pack. There’s plenty of people that love them but there’s also people that say that they fall apart quickly and zpacks customer service sucks. If my gear is falling apart I want the company to help me out and stand behind their product. I enjoy using their food bag and stuff sacks but I don’t think I would ever purchase a pack. Especially, since there’s so many other cottage companies with top notch customer service. That’s my two cents.
Appreciate you sharing your mileage with this pack. Now that Zpacks has had some time to analyze user feedback, I'm curious to see an updated version. Thanks as always, Tim!
I had the arc haul in my room along with the ula and the zpacks went back. The ula seemed much more durable and simple and I've been really happy with it now a year later.
Thanks for your Video. In regards to Zpack sizing, what is your torso height and which size did you choose? Thinking about buying new Arc Zip 57L and I am not sure if I should aim into S or M. Any feedback will be highly appreciated. :)
One thing wrong about it isn't anywhere near as good a pack as the Kelty Trekker 3950... Zpacks backpacks are warranted for one Thru hike...and the Kelty Trekker is a life time warranty...the Kelty Trekker can carry a 10 lbs base weight or less, and if you needed to you could carry an Expedition load...and everything in between it's that great of a backpack.... -Friar Rodney Burnap
I hear you about the loops flipping. Several of my attachment loops flipped so the plastic buckle was connected at a 45 degree angle so all the weight was on two pieces of 1mm plastic in the corners. I couldn't get it to sit straight and was constantly worried it would snap on me any second. In the new pack they sent me I did notice the connection loops were attached with either thicker webbing or if fabric the stitching was closer to the loop so it shouldn't flip. Hopefully.
You probably have the old webbing that was recalled. Email zpacks support and they will send you all new webbing. I had the same issue before the new webbing.
I always arc my arc-haul AFTER loading it up. It's easier to shove stuff in all they way when it's not arched. I never had a problem arcing it after loading.
Same here. I set the arc after loading. Generally, my quilt and pad is below the arc, tent is at the arc and food above the arc. The tent is pretty slender.
It's true that it is easier to stuff things into the pack without the arc of course, but I have to agree with Tim that in my experience its a major pain in the b*** to create the arc after the arc haul is already fully packed. That is because the flex arc is just more or less those two flexible 'sticks' if you will that are fixed in 3 locations (?) each, so you have to put them back into line by force sometimes, and really pull down the straps to create the arc. The entire (partly inflexible) contents of the pack have to be pulled into the arc shape. It depends of course how much you have actually put into your pack. It works better if there is not a whole lot of things in there, but when its really full, or you even have a bear proof container in there, you will have to make sure to put in the arc beforehand. But thats just my optinion, everyone should do it exactly the way it works best for him. :) I personally create the arc before putting anything into the pack.
@@TimWatsonOutdoors You just got to have it on the ground and then put a little bit of downward pressure (not a lot) on the metal bar that goes across the top of the pack as you're pulling the arc straps straight downward.
I have the same hip pocket and moved it to a shoulder strap after being annoyed at not being able to unzip it with one hand. Been pretty happy so far - I usually carry my phone and 1-2 breakfast bars and something to clean my glasses/camera lens. I usually don’t unzip all the way. Been pretty happy with it after using it this way for 25-30 days on trail. Of course easier solution would have been to buy the shoulder pocket to start with.
Tim, I'd like to ask you about the height of the rigid part of the pack( from the bottom part till the the highest point of the frame). Zpacks gives dimensions only for fully extended collar of the pack.
What is your opinion on the load carrying ability, specifically pulling back on the shoulders instead of down on the hips? Since it doesn't stand up rigidly while I'm wearing it without the shoulder straps in place like most packs do at least to some extent, I find that it's always trying to pull on my shoulders, even though the hip belt otherwise works great. I find this to be a serious flaw, but I never see anyone else mention it. Thanks.
Interesting. I think it has excellent transfer of the weight to my hips and feel very slight pressure on the front of my shoulders. I wouldnt characterize it as pulling though. Think you need to adjust more?
Hey Thanks for the video, I should be receiving my Zpac Zip tomorrow and am very excited. Your videos helped me make this choice. I'm fairly new to Ultra lite backpacking. I ordered a sleeping bag which was a significant investment. I want a back up system for when my sons comes with me. What is your 3 season sleep system. I know you have mentioned that you don't use a sleeping bag anymore. I would love if you could link me to the products you use. Thanks Alan
Love that you were willing to make a video that also highlighted the negatives of a pack that you love and recommend. I respect that! Great video Tim! Enjoyed 🙌🏻
I love my Zpacks Arc Haul! I've had the straps slip a little and had to readjust them, but nothing serious. I also do agree about the size. It's nice for the trips with extra gear. The hip pocket zipper is my only real negative. You covered this very well. I would still highly recommend this pack to someone! 👍👍
I don't mind the extra space on the Haul as when I have to use a bear canister or packing extra gear for colder weather, I tend to use more room but yeah, on a normal hike, I am swimming in space. I also don't mind the number of straps the Haul has, but I would prefer they used wider/beefier straps, even if that incurs a slight weight penalty. And yes, the hip belt pockets are practically impossible to open/close one-handed, but the are as capacious as an elephant's scrotum! The only thing I think that Zpacks is doing wrong, or at least could improve on, is the way the shoulder straps are attached to the pack. They aren't attached directly to the pack, but to a single, small, webbing strap. Isn't the purpose of the shoulder straps to distribute the weight? As designed it doesn't do that, and eventually, after enough wear and tear, basically just be a 1/2" shoulder strap with no cushion. Having said that, I like my Arc Haul. It's a light, sturdy pack. I had it loaded to 31 lbs. last season while sharing the weight of a four season tent when and friend and me climbed/camped at Camp Muir last summer and was completely comfortable.
How many daisy chains do you go up from the bottom for your chest strap? You're fingers covered it up. Lol. Agree with everything you said that's why I'm trying my 38 L ski pack. Everything fits for overnights.
This will depend on where you adjust the top of the shoulder strap padding (how far it goes down the back of your shoulders). I've seen hikers not adjust the padding to cover the back of their shoulders enough, so they complain about the webbing straps cutting into their skin on their backs.
I liked the fit of this pack (and how much it would hold) but didn't care for the smaller buckles/straps and, believe it or not, didn't like the roll top. I switched back to an Atmos (Levity 60) and am much happier. Packs, like other gear, is such a personal thing. My wife still loves hers and won't part with it for anything.
Bought one last summer and didn't find it to work well for me. For some of the reasons you mentioned and also the thin straps cut into you. Not into it, been trying to sell it since I bought it
Thank you for the great review as always! The team at ZPacks are extremely helpful. They have replaced all of my webbing on my 2017 Arc Haul Zip with the updated grippier style straps and are currently adjusting the loops tighter to the new design. They insist on doing this all for free. It’s hard to find great customer service like that. I’m looking forward to taking this pack on my AT thru hike starting this Feb 18. Take care, Halo
Talk about hitting the nail on the head!! My Arc Blast has the exact same issues. The biggest annoyance was that side pocket! You got your camera in you hand and trying to wrangle that pocket .. lol you get frustrated with it cause the zippers on the far end and ant moving and so you have to stop.. use two hands and finally you can get your snacks out lol
Great points, Tim. I also like my Arc Haul, but personally it really annoys me that they put ports for a water bladder hose on an otherwise waterproof pack. I sealed them up with tenacious tape on the inside, but I wish they removed the ports from the pack or offered this as an option.
I counted 17 adjustments that I could make to adjust my Arc Blast, but once set only a couple re-adjustments are needed. Yep, you cannot one-hand the hip pocket zippers on which is annoying. The pack leaks. Instead of spraying it with water from the outside, fill it with water like a bucket to find the leaks. I used shoe-goo or E6000 to do a better job of seam sealing. But the pack is instantly recognizable and imparts envy in many people I see on the trail. I was once asked, "Are you through hiking?" I answered, "No, I'm just getting started."
I’ve had some of the same issues, loading the pack before flexing the stays and straps getting twisted in the buckles. Minor stuff. It’s been a good bag otherwise.
it's funny how this equipment seemed so expensive when I was getting into backpacking again, but now it really doesn't. I still won't go out and buy one, but if I did it more, I wouldn't think much of it as far as price goes. I still think it's best to get inexpensive gear and then slowly upgrade unless you have a lot of money. I'm glad I chose the gear I bought. The stuff I didn't use for one reason or another was also a learning experience where I didn't waste a lot of money. Like with me and my dog, a hammock didn't work out but I only spent 20 dollars on it and I use it in the yard. Winter is a good time to think about possible purchases since I hate winter camping. Right now, I'm pretty satisfied with pack weight and quality so I don't think I'll be buying anything this winter.
Good review, and I agree, which is why I sold mine. It does well with weights around 25 to 28 pounds. My main problem was the whole trampoline thing. Just a pain to get it to the right arc .
Thanks, Tim, for honestly sharing your experiences. You have a very informative channel! For me, I've not experienced any slippage in my Arc Haul. Also, I often forget to "arc" it until after I've packed it, but I have been able to add the arc without unloading it ... with a little bit of force and hoping that I won't break anything:)
I hope the Oathbringers author pays you a commission, for some reason that book draws my eye every time you're "in studio"! Seriously, great review and I enjoy watching your videos. Thanks.
I've used my Gossamer G4 frame less pack for years now. I still love it and I guess now I consider myself being ahead of the times. Buhahahahaha. It's funny in the last couple years EVERYBODY has been saying the Arc Haul is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Now everyone seems to be moving towards frame less packs. I totally get the frame less for other hikes where you don't need the heavy food canister or tent or go the long stretches. Well that's the reason I got the Arc Haul, for my upcoming JMT hike. Hopefully after that other longer hikes. The JMT requires a bear can, a tent, and there's a stretch of more than a week where there's no resupply, no charging of batteries, etc. Way too much weight for a frame less pack in my opinion. I also have had a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 (3.1 lbs) that is sooo heavy these days ;-) haha... If someone wants to donate or let me use their Zpacks tent I promise I don't pee the bed.
Love my z packs .. Appreciate the extra space for winter.. And the load rating is great for a light weight pack.. Don't worry you can beat the crap out of them brush ,weight and rain they will take it
i literally just bought a Zpacks Arc haul about 20 minutes before i saw this video lol! luckily i still feel good about the purchase after watching it haha!
It’s crazy to see the evolution of backpacks from the old external frame metal ones, to internal fram, to no frame, to arc and trampoline style frames... to klymits inflated frame.... I wonder what’s next? Great video Tim!
Tim Watson haha! But before that there will be the shrink gear... gear that you literally shrink to fit in your pocket. Then hit it with the laser on your iPhone36,784r Maxmicro and it pops to full size! 😂
So I pretty much just use RUclips for reviews if able anymore. I can't say it has dissuaded me from purchasing something but I can get the cons of the product and decide if they are deal breakers. I also know they are legit reviews. Thanks a bunch for sharing!
Another great video Tim. There can be a love/hate with all products. I owned the Arc Haul for a short time and even with the extra lumbar pad, the frame jammed into my lower back. Great pack, but seriously uncomfortable for me.
Brandon Foley I love my pack. You definitely feel the weight difference from a traditional pack. I had an Osprey Atmos 65 before. Similar cons to what everyone else has, the hip belt pockets are large but difficult to open and the arc does need adjustment from time to time as I feel it slips a little when hiking. Overall great weight savings and the ventilation while wearing it is great.
Nice vid Tim. I would love to have one but paying that much to save 1/2 lb off my exos 48 (without the brain), I’m just not ready yet. Maybe when I ditch the hammock and become a tarp only guy. 😳
My issue with Z packs is they have the worst customer service ever, no phone support whatsoever, and everything is done through email which is a very very slow process.
Excellent video. Was the dislike from the Schill Brothers?😂 On a serious note, wish I could afford that pack. Took me 20 minutes to dial in my Osprey Atmos.
So, I never drank the Z Packs Kool Aid. Its interesting to see how people who did are now getting the aftertaste. Not to distract from the quality of the products. But, when all is perfect....it makes me question things.....just sayin. Love your content and channel. Keep up the good work!
Beside the zipper on the pockets (which is technically not part of the pack since you have to buy them separately), the rest of your "things wrong list" with the pack seem made up... as if you had to come up with a "top 5 list" and couldn't really think of any real problems. I mean, you bought the pack knowing it's size...right? Then you complain of too many straps but go on to say "that's what makes Z-packs Arc Haul such a great pack". Well which is it?
Did the Rogue River in May 2018 and some weekenders with the Arc Haul and loved it. However, I did the JMT in September and lost my love for the ZPacks Arc Haul. I too had the shoulder strap slip out, but it was also a matter of loosening it too much. I had to be conscience of how short I felt they were and not loosen the straps too much when taking the pack off. My other dislike was the strap between the shoulder straps did not adjust very easily. The biggest complaint I had with the pack was there was no way to adjust the distance between the shoulder straps, which is understandable. But, for me they were too far apart and the weight of the pack was on the outside of my shoulders and I got pain in my shoulders as a result. The other problem I had was the same problem Saunter Beyond had with one of the arc poles bending outward which shifted the weight of the pack on your shoulders, so my left shoulder towards the end of the day would start to hurt. There needs to be one more loop (2 in all at appropriate distances) for the pole to go threw. The zipper on the hip pockets is a common problem. I know these may be personal faults, but I have purchased a different pack for the PCT this year. Thanks for the review. It seems as though when I purchased the pack there was nothing but praise for it.
The ONLY reason I would buy this pack over the others is the arc and the frame. My back HATES heat. I cant stand my ETC walking pack, with it's "sweat sponge" on the back. I have the Exos now for the mesh back and I dont know if and when I would drop the kind of cash they want for this pack but if that does happen the fact that it has a frame that holds the pack slightly away from my back would the reason why. The rest of your issues wouldnt really bother me. Biggest con for me is price.
Ahh ha. I see, interesting. Once you first get the pack and, put the arc in lol, don't you never have to do it again? Or is it like a down sleeping bag where when not in use you loosen it?
@Mountain Lust That sounds like a trade worth considering Tim. Depending on which palante pack Mountain Lust has. Also, I have suggested to Joe Valesko several times to make a lower volume ventilated Arc Pack - like a 38L Nero pack with an arc frame. I like the look of the Arc Scout - and have thought it may work fine as a low volume, compact ventilated pack even for a person with a longer torso. Just an idea I have toyed with. BB
Will you still be a Mountain House Ambassador in 2019?
Yes I am/will.
Same code?
The code updates every quarter. There's a new one in the description. TW19Q1
Excessive straps can be cut off after you fit the pack to you!
Good review, and I agree, which is why I sold mine. It does well with weights around 25 to 28 pounds. My main problem was the whole trampoline thing. Just a pain to get it to the right arc .
Some people have a love/hate relationship with the arc. I like it alot in the warm months.
Rubbing along the bottom straps that keep the trampoline under tension can cause fraying.
Do you use a water bladder with this pack?
nope, water bottles.
Thanks.
Same here, i caught myself several times trying to read the names of some his books.
whats the alternative to all those straps?in terms of design??
The other alternative is something frameless like my SWD 30. No back trampoline or no load lifters though.
Don't worry you can beat the crap out of them brush ,weight and rain they will take it
Agreed!
i literally just bought a Zpacks Arc haul about 20 minutes before i saw this video lol! luckily i still feel good about the purchase after watching it haha!
As well you should! It's a great pack! Glad you still feel good about the purchase. I still do. 😄
It’s a good pack. While Tim’s feedback is accurate and I agree, these aren’t deal breakers imo. I think you should feel good about the purchase,
I've been using my Zpacks Arc Haul for a year now. Great pack with only a few extremely minor cons. I have no plans to replace it for a long time.
Good honest review I Do think it is a great pack. Finding a few flaws after hard use is okay. Seeing a lot of flaws before you even use it = BAD !
Yes!
It’s crazy to see the evolution of backpacks from the old external frame metal ones, to internal fram, to no frame, to arc and trampoline style frames... to klymits inflated frame.... I wonder what’s next? Great video Tim!
I'm rooting for true anti gravity backpacking. 🤣
Tim Watson haha! But before that there will be the shrink gear... gear that you literally shrink to fit in your pocket. Then hit it with the laser on your iPhone36,784r Maxmicro and it pops to full size! 😂
A Bag of Holding...
So I pretty much just use RUclips for reviews if able anymore. I can't say it has dissuaded me from purchasing something but I can get the cons of the product and decide if they are deal breakers. I also know they are legit reviews. Thanks a bunch for sharing!
I always cover the pack with a cover in cold snowy weather at night or bring it in my tent.
Good idea!
I always cover mine, no matter what. Dew, rain, frost, snow. And usually hang it from a tree using small webbing and a toggle.
ASCII 27 same here
I arc mine after I use it. I think that's how it's meant to be used.
Would love to see an Arc Haul or Blast at 35L or a Nero with an Arc.
I like all of the adjustments. As I lose weight I can readjust in every way possible lol. Happy hiking ⛰
Another great video Tim. There can be a love/hate with all products. I owned the Arc Haul for a short time and even with the extra lumbar pad, the frame jammed into my lower back. Great pack, but seriously uncomfortable for me.
I borrowed the arc from a freind and the only flaw I found was the slipping happened twice on a 3 day trip.
Yea I know some people who've had zero issues and some who've had more than me.
Great video Tim! I literally just ordered my Arc Haul yesterday.
I think you'll be pleased. I love mine.
👍
How is the backpack, I'm thinking about getting one which will be a big purchase for me
Your thoughts, Mr Midwest ?
stricky's backpacking adventures Never ditch the hammock.
Hello Tim, I appreciate your honest and straightforward reviews. Keep up the great work. Be safe out there and always have fun. 🤗
Thanks!
Really good info on the pack Tim. This will help me make a decision.
Perhaps you shouldn't leave it out in the frost. I don't think anyone is fond of frost covered packs.
This is some Darwin would never do. Thanks for the info Tim!!
You're welcome!
What’s this?!! A Critical video of your beloved Z pack Arc Haul 😳😳😳
😄😬
My issue with Z packs is they have the worst customer service ever, no phone support whatsoever, and everything is done through email which is a very very slow process.
Great video and way to let everyone know
reviews are fun to read..great idea for a video ..digging the frost clip...gear testing at its best..
Thanks! The frost was a revelation for sure.
Straps..straps...straps!!!... Zippers..zippers..zippers.... Yeah, my Klymit Motion 60 is a bondage freak's dream too....😒... Still love it though
I fill it up everytime for winter.
I can see that!
Got the liteaf pack. Gotta say it's my new goto 3 season
Mirin' that Brandon Sanderson collection in the background.
Excellent video. Was the dislike from the Schill Brothers?😂
On a serious note, wish I could afford that pack. Took me 20 minutes to dial in my Osprey Atmos.
😂🤣🤣 thanks. It's one of my favorite purchases the last five years.
So, I never drank the Z Packs Kool Aid. Its interesting to see how people who did are now getting the aftertaste. Not to distract from the quality of the products. But, when all is perfect....it makes me question things.....just sayin. Love your content and channel. Keep up the good work!
To fill the unutilized space on my Nero I sometimes inflate my pillow.
Agreed Tim, I'm hoping my Arc Haul strap slipping doesn't become too much of a pain for me. Keep it up Tim, good info.
Your poop trowel needs a strap to match it! Lol like the microphone stand that Aerosmith has! Lmbo
Great review. Thanks Tim
Hej Tim thanks for the honest review. GL HF out there :)
Too big? Maybe time to pick up an Arc Blast.
🤔
The ONLY reason I would buy this pack over the others is the arc and the frame. My back HATES heat. I cant stand my ETC walking pack, with it's "sweat sponge" on the back. I have the Exos now for the mesh back and I dont know if and when I would drop the kind of cash they want for this pack but if that does happen the fact that it has a frame that holds the pack slightly away from my back would the reason why. The rest of your issues wouldnt really bother me. Biggest con for me is price.
What the hell does, "Put the arc in" mean?
ruclips.net/video/7v2IGYFnXGU/видео.html
See at 0:44. You literally make the backpack arc. 👍😄
Ahh ha. I see, interesting. Once you first get the pack and, put the arc in lol, don't you never have to do it again? Or is it like a down sleeping bag where when not in use you loosen it?
I take the arc out after every trip. It makes it easier to store. I wouldnt keep the arc in too long.
Makes sense. Thank you for explaining.
Too many straps? That’s the point lol
Wanna sell it?
Nope. :)
@@TimWatsonOutdoors trade for a palante? Lol
BB
You forgot price in your click bait video :-)
eventually I will save enough pennies and get one, and be typing a different tune....
Click bait? Me?! 😅😅
