One of the most underrated and untalked-about movies I've ever seen. The 80s feel seeping throughout is brilliant. This is essentially a slasher movie.
Great film! Dan Stevens’ character is mesmerizing, how he straddles that line between suave charm and psychotic terror. The scene where he smooth talks the principal out expelling Luke is a favorite of mine.
“Seems like a pretty good dude.” If a thriller movie is named The Guest, chances are that guest is not a pretty good dude, lol. So happy to see a movie review again Brandon!
What a truly fantastic review, Brandon! What makes Dan Stevens' performance so utterly brilliant is the fact that this was his first starring role in a movie since he left the insanely popular Downton Abbey as the hearthrob romantic lead, Matthew Crawley. In one of the most controversial decisions in the history of TV series, after his three-year contract was over, he decided to NOT renew because he wanted to explore other diverse roles and not stay in the same role for another 3 years. His role in The Guest was a 180-degree departure from the suave, elegant and noble Matthew Crawley, and he certainly proved his versatility and opened industry eyes that he can play any role. Of course, he went on to be the beast in Beauty & the Beast, and showed great comedic chops as Sir Lancelot in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb; was insanely intense in the horror gothic movie, Apostle; went in a completely different direction playing the lead in the FX miniseries Legion for three years; and of course, was again very funny and yet poignant in Eurovision -- where he stole the film; and again was brilliant in last year's "Im Your Man" an all-German film with English subtitles. What can't Dan Stevens do?? And of course, then there is his physical beauty. He really is the entire package. Again, thanks for a scintillating review all these years later!!
If you wanna see more of Dan Stevens brillian acting, i recommend you Legion. Is a short Tv Series but i think you will enjoy the cinematography and the plot.
Yes, Dan does an excellent job in Legion! It’s worth mentioning that the series was created by Noah Hawley who also created Fargo. And Legion does feel a little like a Fargo season on steroids when it comes to weirdness and mystery! Just absolutely crazy, love it.
David : What happened? Luke Peterson : This kid called me a f*ggot... so I broke a yardstick on his face. David : Okay. Awesome. Greatest bit of dialog ever.
Absolutely agree. Another recent one I can recommend that scratches the "low-budget 80s exploitation" itch is VFW. It's about a few old veterans (and a young one that just got home) that have to defend their bar against a drug dealer, his enforcers and an army of violent addicts after a young girl steals their stash and runs in there. It's basically a modern and a lot more violent version of Assault on Precinct 13 and it kicks a ton of ass. If you're a fan of 80s action and genre movies, you're gonna recognize a few faces in the cast. Can't recommend this one enough if you crave a tight 90 minutes of no-frills carnage like it used to be made back then with just the right amount of modernization.
Was just about to say the same thing. Everybody seems to love marvel but have never seen legion and it's the best marvel show ever. Aubrey plaza didn't hurt
If you think Dan Stevens is good here, you gotta watch Legion! I highly recommend it, it’s a brilliant show! Would love to see your insight and reactions to it!
Really enjoy this movie and it's soundtrack. SURVIVE has a few songs in the film such as the one playing in the bar scene. Two members of the band are responsible for the Stranger Things intro music and soundtrack. From Wikipedia: "The Duffer Brothers were first made aware of Dixon and Stein's music while watching the 2014 thriller film The Guest, which featured music produced and performed by their band Survive."
I would recommend giving it another shot or watching Red Letter Media’s discussion of the film with the screenwriter. It’s a genre throwback and pays homage to many classics from Halloween to The Terminator. It changes genres multiple times and still feels cohesive. It’s dripping with that 80s flair with its music, cinematography, and atmosphere. It’s such a well made movie and easily Wingard’s best film.
I wouldn’t want it honestly. The story is perfect the way it is. The cliffhanger ending is great homage to slashers like Halloween, but I don’t want too much of a homage with inferior sequels like those movies either.
Finally saw this movie a couple years ago and immediately bought it on Blu-Ray. It’s become a Halloween-season staple of mine. Not strictly a horror movie but still uses that atmosphere perfectly, and it’s a damn good movie to boot.
So glad you checked this one out, what a great movie! This is what made me a Dan Stevens fan although I've still yet to see him too often in many other things. Thought he did great in this though. Some cool music choices in this one too.
Adam Wingard is one of my favorites. I met him a few times while he was making The Guest and was promoting You’re Next. Super nice guy and part of his success I think should be thanked for his collaborations with Simon Barrett (write of You’re Next and The Guest). They also did A Horrible Way to Die which I think is a fantastic low budget indie. Lots of people find it boring but it had their good storytelling and fun twists and turns. Their only misstep I think is Blair Witch. I liked that they tried to be ambitious, but it just didn’t work for me. I’m glad they’re working together again with the new Godzilla/Kong sequel and bringing Dan Stephens into the movie! Should be fun. As for production, I met Adam at Comic Con and he showed me and my best friend stills of The Guest before any info was really out on the movie. They originally wanted to shoot in South Korea I remember and there was supposed to be an intense freeway chase scene but couldn’t film it due to budget issues. The movie has a lot of rewatch ability to it. You’ll notice a lot more. It’s Deff up for interpretation but the more you watch it the more you realize David is straight up a Cyborg. The inspirations for this I know were Terminator and Halloween. Apparently this was an original script for Barrett he never finished, but when Adam got high one day and said he wanted to do a Terminator/Halloween style movie Barrett reworked his script to give us The Guest. There isn’t an official sequel (prolly never will be) but they made a sequel in the form of a new soundtrack. It has artwork and song titles that kind of give you a feel/storyline of what would happen if they did make a sequel. Also the just the music alone in this movie as well as the “sequel” are sooo good and I find myself constantly revisiting them. Glad you watched this Brandon!! You watch better movies than a lot of other reactors and you’re the only person who appreciates Paddington the way I do lmao 😂
Great reaction! I've never seen Dan Stevens in anything else but Downton Abbey. So it's VERY weird for me to see him speak without a British accent. This was a very entertaining movie and I think Dan did an excellent job with the role.
Have had this movie in the back of my mind of films I’d love to see you react to, knowing your love of music by acts like The Midnight. Legitimately, this movie is like if synthwave/retrowave could manifest itself into a being with hands and fingers and write a script. Phenomenal soundtrack, that Anthonio song…😌👌🏼💜 Jason Bourne meets 80s horror. An odd but surprisingly good combination. I’ll admit yes a lot of the film’s aspects are quite surface level but we just kinda accept it and go along with the story because everything else is so slick and stylistic, it’s still my favourite Adam Wingard film, and there’s whispers of a sequel in the works too!
So happy to see you checking this amazing film out! Also, yes please do V/H/S 2. It surpassed the first one, which is also great, and is one of my favorites in all of horror.
But I saw this movie I said yeah this guy Dan Stevens is going to be a star...and most people have never even hears of this film. It's such a shame because his performance in this movie it should have gotten him much bigger roles.
Dan Stevens is one of the most underrated actors. should be the new bond IMO. He’s great in legion but it goes off the rails in S2 and you kinda don’t care after that. But as an actor, he’s the shit and I hope he gets more quality work in the future.
Another BANGER movie I never would've known existed if not for your channel Brandon 😊 👍 🎥 Love to see you react to the "Westworld" series... I know you'd love it ❤ 🎥 🏆 Liam McPoyle (Jimmi Simpson) is in it

The latter being the most anticipated. Check these out Brandon.
Must be hilarious for somebody to see Dan Stevens directly from Donwtow Abbey to this film. I know of Dan Stevens from the TV series LEGION and he is magnificent in it. The entire show is a television masterpiece, one of the top best presentations of the marvel universe characters to the screen.
