paramedical student here. While they serve an entertainment purpose in this video (and others like it), these are real tests. If a patient presents with symptoms like loss of sensibility or neuropathic damage (its the one that feels like a spear jabbing through you), medics will use tests very much like these to assess the full scope of disability in the affected region. This has to do with the nerves that exit your spine. If there is damage or compression on a nerve, it will have problems sending the signal your body needs to function properly. The disability you will experience is correspondent to the type of nerve that is affected. There are sensory and motor nerves, meaning those that communicate sensibility to the brain and those that activate muscles on the brain’s behalf. So medics will assess whether your senses are still working and if you can still move muscles in the affected regions (like she did with the resistance tests to the head, when she had to open and close her mouth against her hand for example).
And if this all isn’t enough, there are actually two types of sensibility you need to worry about. These are called gnostic and vital sensibility, the former transmitting your soft touch sensations to your brain, and the other sending off more harsh, sharp or dangerous touches at a much faster rate. As the name implies, the vital sensibility is meant to keep you live and warn your body of dangerous sensations. Picture you put your hand on an electric stove. Is it off? Your gnostic sensibility lets you feel the surface. Is it on? Then the extreme temperature will activate your vital sensibility and prompt you to lift your hand via reflexes.
The ‘dull or sharp’ test is used to determine which type of sensibility is diminished. So, in this example, you could say that her vital sensibility of the right side of her face isn’t working properly, due to a light malfunction of the corresponding nerve.
I did not intend to write this much, hope this was still helpful! :D
