Never knew of this until today and have been a music lover over fifty years. The song is beyond Dame Kiri's abilities to convey its meaning, She has a beautiful voice, but offers little, if anything, in terms of interpretation. Diana Damrau nails it on her recording of the piece.

This sounds more like something Strauss would have composed around 1920 than at the end of his life.

The world premiere of Malven was by Te Kanawa (here), then the first recording by Marton (same year : 1985).

It is not substandard. It's just not one of the great songs.

Auch wenn es Strauss letzte Komposition ist, seine beste ist es nicht.
