Awesome! Shame you couldn’t make it up to the traction engine at big river, It’s seriously impressive and not much further up the track. I did a solo two week trip in the South Island during winter, absolutely loved it! Great video.
Cheers mate! I know - went up there last time I was there - it’s amazing! The river had come up heaps during the morning and we didn’t want to risk getting trapped. Winter is pretty special eh - so different to summer!

@@OverlandNZTV we’ve done a lot of those trails every February we spend a month down south we sleep in our trucks so we don’t have to worry about the weather and wind etc
It can be eh - even in summer I’ve not had a warm night. I was chasing a clear sky to do some astro photography - was fully worth the conditions to get the stars in the middle of the night
@@OverlandNZTV Yes that area is great for astrophotography, I camped at Flowlers one night in September, minus 6 that night but we sat up looking at planes and stars it was fantastic for sky-watching. Cheers

Awesome trip by the looks of it! Def need to add to “the list” of places to go! Hey question when your relaxing or cooking dinner in evenings how do you keep warm? Do you use a fire pit or gas heater or something? I’m finding that the problem for my partner, once we get in tent it’s all warm.
It was pretty awesome - cannot deny that! It depended on the night - the 'warmer' ones were all good with just good thermal layers and jackets. In all honesty though, by the time we got into camp, setup, cooked food and dumped footage it was 8pm and we just went to bed - sitting around in -2 and sleet isn't really all that nice

Only once many many years ago - ish. Was in a town grabbing some more food and hit a piece of metal which tore the tire. Haven’t ever had an issue offroad though, thankfully
Awesome video - love the production with your choice of music. It can't have been easy getting all those shots in inclement weather. I've been waiting a year for my Fortuner now, and it still looks like another 4 months 😒 .. Any chance of getting a comparison between the tent/awning setup on your Fortuner vs the Hilux in this video. Having the awning pushed forward with a narrower tent looks like an interesting option (if it fits on the Fortuner).
Cheers! Appreciate it! It wasn't the easiest trip to get footage - non-stop rain and cameras don't mix well. Ohhh that's a decent wait! Hopefully it shows up sometime soon.. It's worth it though. This trip was the first big one I've done in it - was an awesome car for it. I had my old Hilux setup almost the same as Ash's one - it worked way better, can't deny that. But the Fortuer isn't really long enough. In saying that - between the awning, boot and tent you do get a fair bit of cover with how I have mine setup

We camped at lake Tennyson in mid February and had a mean as frost so it’s one cold place
Sure is! Well worth it though eh - just have to be prepared for the cold, even in summer
@@OverlandNZTV we’ve done a lot of those trails every February we spend a month down south we sleep in our trucks so we don’t have to worry about the weather and wind etc
Tennyson can be a cold bleak place in bad weather, I would have stopped at the Ada homestead which you passed, or Fowlers camp which has a hut.
It can be eh - even in summer I’ve not had a warm night. I was chasing a clear sky to do some astro photography - was fully worth the conditions to get the stars in the middle of the night

The boot is such a pain - would love an old school boot that just opens, but Toyota didn’t offer the option in NZ sadly
No Elect tailgate and 17 inch wheels why I bought a GX Fortuner
No heated seats though 🤔😂 Can't get the GX here - both the GXL and Limited have electric tailgates
