I’ve never owned this model and I do plan on buying one but alot of guys have told me thay this specifc model 09-14 has some heating problems and the bike literally burns your knees and is not suitable for hot climate areas. Is that so ?
They do run hotter than normal flatplane bikes that’s for sure. Not hot enough to cause significant issues though in my opinion. It’s just annoying on the hot days. My bike had a starter failure ( apparently it’s another common issue on these bikes ). My starter failure happened to me at the worst time. I was on a bike trip roughly 2000kms away from home so was very inconvenient bomb starting it the rest of the trip.
I've always loved the look of an under the tail exhaust something about it just looks so cool like a jet plane or something you just sit there waiting for the afterburner to kick in
I got the same year and same color. I bought mine in 2018. At the time, it only had 1 owner and 2300 miles for a 6 year old bike. I got very lucky. As of today it has 7,800 miles. Has the carbon m4 exhaust. I love this bike. I decided to keep the shrek ear mirrors. My gixxer had the handle bar mirrors. it looked nice aesthetically but i preferred the functionality of the regular mirrors. Plus i always hung my helmet on it.
Wtf you only did 5k miles in 4 years? I did 20k miles in 3 years on my 03’ Aprilia RSV Mille lol, only had 1100 miles on it in 2020 when I bought it 🤷🏾♂️ but sold now and have a 3rd Gen R1 5PW (5 Valve Engine,2nd year for fuel injection)
Definitely love the look of toce! I find they sound awesome at lower rpm or half throttle. They are pretty much a straight pipe though and don’t sound as clean in the high rpm at wide open throttle though. Still a sweet set up though!
I just want to point that there's 7 levels of TCS, 6 modes on and 1 is entirely off and the 'modes' affects throttle response, not power. A means 30% more response, B is 30% less and STD is standard for no interference. I heard B mode shaves a bit of power off the top end.
I’ve tested the different power modes to see if they actually made a difference in a race situation. Power mode B was very similar doing a wide open throttle run lined up beside my old 2006 R1. Did the same race a second time in power mode A and my new R1 pulled ahead in the early rpm and continued to creep away up top as well. In conclusion the power modes affect response yes but they also affect wide open throttle power through most of the rpm range. It was a pretty cool test seeing the difference first hand. I plan on bringing the bike to the 1/4 mile track and testing it again. Would be fun seeing exact numbers
RN12 or 19 in red is the way to go... Agile, light, smooth, stabile etc. Looks like a Mantis. RN22 is heavy with too much electro controls and maked for short riders. Im 6.2 so RN12 is my baby.

I've got an 09 R1 and personally very much prefer the stock mirror look over the delete or bar end mirrors. The proportions just look right to my eye. I also simultaneously owned an 05 R1 up until selling it a couple weeks ago so I got a lot of seat time (like you) switching between the two platforms. It's so wild how the 04-06 R1's are extremely fast bikes in their own right but if you jump off of your 06 and hop on the 09-14... DUDE... the crossplanes make the earlier generations feel so slow and boring. That torque just kicks in and the sound is absolutely insane. My 05 R1 had Toce exhaust so don't get me wrong it was LOUD. But my 09 sounds like a fine-tuned war machine. It's absolutely crazy. You easily pull the front wheel up when you're in A mode and that in combination with the sound makes you feel so freaking POWERFUL when you get off of it. That's the difference. When I rode my 05 I felt cool. I had custom painted it in arctic camo and highlighter wheels so it was sick. But getting off my 09 R1 I feel like a legend among children. It's crazy. Intoxicating. Addicting. People would talk about oh crossplane sound this and that and I was like meh when watching videos... but dude.... owning one is inexplicable. You just feel like a legend.

I have the exact same bike. and surprisingly we run into same issues, and your videos helped me fix mine, especially the starter relay one, you saved me a lot off time and money
Glad I could help! I know I was stressed out having intermittent issues for a full season and ended up getting stranded when my starter finally failed. Hopefully it saves a lot more people the hassles I had to go through getting the bike figured out.
Stock mirrors are better and get rid of the blue levers..lol...I can't believe how harsh you've been on the old 5vy it's a legend of the R1 range like the early carb model. The cross plane is a pretty bike though and great noise. Enjoy fella....
My 09 is the only motorcycle that I have ever bought at a dealership. All my other bikes have been wrecked rebuilds. I had a 2014 Triumph Street Triple R. Very good bike and a great exhaust note. Doesn’t compare to my R1 though.
@@JT2JZ I feel that riding with no mirrors will eventually make anyone an even safer rider as you’ll physically have to do your checks rather then just look into a small mirror. Plus the bike looks better so win win 👌🏼🤙🏼
I was definitely not expecting that voice after the lead in. Hilarious. Look into "Neverland" bar end mirrors. They are a levergaurd and mirror in one. The black one looks pretty trick too.

If you ever get the chance to try a Crossplane definitely don’t pass it up. It’s a very unique power band. The best way I can describe it would be comparing it to a V8 muscle car with a huge camshaft. Doesn’t run very smooth in the low rpm but once you hit the power band it pulls like a train all the way to redline.
Niiiice, just recently got me a beautiful black and yellow 09. I purchased a cheapo midpipe on eBay for about $90 and fitment was great. I’d suggest taking a good look at the clutch assembly for peace of mind, and I do like having my mirrors. Ride safe brother!
One of the coolest sportbikes ever made. Hope the mirrors went back on. Block off plates and bar end mirrors scream "squid". Remove them when you go to the track.
fairing stay breaking which when they break your entire front falls down you know the part that houses your gauges headlight intakes and also blocks your radiator causing the bike to overheat if you continue to ride it I know from experience take yours lose and test it out

I agree with you 100%. Might try and powder coat a few of the final pieces black. Levers are already swapped out with black ones off of my old bike for now. The ASV levers are definitely a better upgrade though.
Also gonna have that in 6 months. not rushing to a litre bike coz I am noob rider just 5 months 😅 here in my country philippines I already seen a few selling with low odo. 13k to 17k odo.

Beautiful bike and clean af🔥💪🏾,I've owned 2 2009's one was yellow and the other one was the raven edition,Now I own a 2013 with the matte gray color scheme,to me nothing beats the sounds of that crossplane engine,specially if you have the toce exhaust on it which I do lol
To be honest right now it kind of a love / hate relationship. Still working through some issues on the new bike but once I get them fixed I think I will like it more than my 2006. More videos coming soon.
@@JT2JZ Having ridden over 100,000 miles on two S1000RRs: I liked their original, asymmetric styling, the instruments, the quick shifter, the brakes and the BMW brand. But I found the engine and the sound of the engine about as exciting as my mother's sewing machine. No personality. No charisma. No sound. Not perfectly reliable, a fortune to service and blew up an engine at 65,000 miles.

I’ve only been riding the bike for one year but have never had a situation where I needed the abs yet. It is weird how it has traction control but no abs though

@@JT2JZ yeah that was me. We definitely were ha king that conversation. I’m happy for you man. I hope you were able to fix that cold start issue. I would change everything, from starter, brand new OEM battery, new spark plugs, flush all fluids and get all new fluids and I would go with Bazzaz fuel control instead of PC. That bike looks so sick man. Something about this generation that’s so breath taking.
Honestly I was in the same shoes. My 2006 R1 was my baby. Didn’t really like the 2009+ body style until I saw this one that was all blacked out. The 2012-14 have an updated front headlight design as well that look a bit nicer than the 2009-11.
It looks better without the mirrors, but on mine i didnt remove them, because of functionality. I use the mirrors often, so its not worth it to remove them for me.
i have an ,o6 and a '14 I love em both same ex on my 14 06 keeps me on my toes 14 keeps me learning on the track and it could not sound any more $^**** crossplaaaaanaaaaazz

@@JT2JZ I have no clue what the previous owner was using as his fuel or whatever but I was told by the techs that my pistons had built up Carbon under Neath them and of course my warranty didn’t cover anything “Carbon” related so I was stuck paying 4 grand!! But the bike had about 15K miles when I purchased it and not even 1K miles after I had it I had to do the rebuild!! I asked the techs what caused that issue and was told they DONT even know and all they could suggest was someone was burning too high or Heavy octane or fuel...But, it completely stopped cranking after I gave it a bath...Dude it smoked my boots and I was pissed because I spent my LAST on that bike and had to wait all the way until this January before I got her right!! Bought her last May 😳🤦♂️
That’s rough. Ya It’s always a gamble buying used bikes unfortunately. I’ve had good luck in the past. This is the first bike I have ever had issues with but hopefully I have it all fixed now 🤞
That’s a good year. I’m currently selling my 2006 R1. It will be a sad / emotional day when it sells because it was such a good bike. It had zero issues over many many years of spirited riding. 👌

I like the stock mirror and I couldn’t handle the functionality loss, there’s enough compromise with riding a bike vs a car as is.
Very true. I find in town at slower speeds it’s easy enough to shoulder check but anything 100kms/hr + is where the inconvenience really kicks in.

Greg's customs makes cleaner mirror block offs, 60$. They aren't huge and fat, they're nearly flat.

The body is mint because the fairings are either repainted or aftermarket. 2012 never came in the black colour
Interesting. I’ve seen other black r1s around. Maybe they were not 2012s though.
I bought it off the original owner but I guess you never really knows with a used bike sometimes.
The fairing fitment is perfect unlike a lot of aftermarket options I’ve seen. Paint looks original too but hard to tell for sure.

Beautiful bike and clean af🔥💪🏾,I've owned 2 2009's one was yellow and the other one was the raven edition,Now I own a 2013 with the matte gray color scheme,to me nothing beats the sounds of that crossplane engine,specially if you have the toce exhaust on it which I do lol

To be honest right now it kind of a love / hate relationship. Still working through some issues on the new bike but once I get them fixed I think I will like it more than my 2006. More videos coming soon.

@@JT2JZ Having ridden over 100,000 miles on two S1000RRs: I liked their original, asymmetric styling, the instruments, the quick shifter, the brakes and the BMW brand. But I found the engine and the sound of the engine about as exciting as my mother's sewing machine. No personality. No charisma. No sound. Not perfectly reliable, a fortune to service and blew up an engine at 65,000 miles.

Long story short. 2006 was more reliable. 2012 is more unique and exciting to ride.
Stock mirror look beautiful. I need a guidance . What about heat coming from engine and under the seat from exhaust? Is it ok ?
It runs hotter than other bikes but not that much worse.

I’ve only been riding the bike for one year but have never had a situation where I needed the abs yet. It is weird how it has traction control but no abs though

I’m happy for you man. I hope you were able to fix that cold start issue. I would change everything, from starter, brand new OEM battery, new spark plugs, flush all fluids and get all new fluids and I would go with Bazzaz fuel control instead of PC.

It’s pretty dialed in now. I got it starting perfect again. So happy I can just ride it now instead of wrenching on it.

Honestly I was in the same shoes. My 2006 R1 was my baby. Didn’t really like the 2009+ body style until I saw this one that was all blacked out. The 2012-14 have an updated front headlight design as well that look a bit nicer than the 2009-11.

It looks better without the mirrors, but on mine i didnt remove them, because of functionality. I use the mirrors often, so its not worth it to remove them for me.

What happened with your engine? Why did it need a rebuild? How many kms?
@@JT2JZ I have no clue what the previous owner was using as his fuel or whatever but I was told by the techs that my pistons had built up Carbon under Neath them and of course my warranty didn’t cover anything “Carbon” related so I was stuck paying 4 grand!! But the bike had about 15K miles when I purchased it and not even 1K miles after I had it I had to do the rebuild!! I asked the techs what caused that issue and was told they DONT even know and all they could suggest was someone was burning too high or Heavy octane or fuel...But, it completely stopped cranking after I gave it a bath...Dude it smoked my boots and I was pissed because I spent my LAST on that bike and had to wait all the way until this January before I got her right!! Bought her last May 😳🤦♂️
That’s rough. Ya It’s always a gamble buying used bikes unfortunately. I’ve had good luck in the past. This is the first bike I have ever had issues with but hopefully I have it all fixed now 🤞

That’s a good year. I’m currently selling my 2006 R1. It will be a sad / emotional day when it sells because it was such a good bike. It had zero issues over many many years of spirited riding. 👌
