Cute...I'm a Pentaholic and love the Jazzy feel of the Pentatonix version but this is really, really fun. Upbeat and fun and the storytelling comes through with the characters. Really nice. First time listening to Voice Play. I like it. Will check them out more :-) Nice range on the bassist
Neo, DJ's right. This group is quite theatrical, with many of them hailing from some of the Disney and entertainment resorts in the Orlando, FL area. Their talent is phenomenal and it certainly puts them on level with Pentatatonix, Voctave, and Home Free, but their flavor is their own. If you want some interesting examples of their range, check out "Queen in Five Minutes," "Boy Bands in Five Minutes," "Oogie Boogie Song," and "Road Trip (a golden oldie showcasing their wonderful sense of humor)." Plus they've covered a lot of Disney. I think you'll love the rabbit hole that is VoicePlay.
In this version, I LOVE the way that they hand the lines between each other across the registers MID-PHRASE... Add that to the way that they change up the tempos and even voice styles (French waiter anyone?) and the listener doesn't know where it is going next.
I agree. This song is usually only sung with a bass lead, but I really liked how Geoff worked the arrangement to give all members of the group a chance to shine, especially J. None's sweet baritone.
I enjoy all the acapella groups but VoicePlay is my favorite, period. Not just for this song but out of all musical groups, acapella or not. There are many great bass singers out there but I just love the resonance of Geoff's voice more than any of the others.
My thoughts as well. Tim and Avi are remarkably talented, but I don't find their voices as compelling as Geoff's. He has such a gorgeous resonance and fullness through his entire range; his tenor is just as pleasing to listen to as his bass notes. And of course his control over that range is inhuman.
Thanks for doing this. This was shot this year. Earl Elkins is not in it. Just released two weeks ago. The Grinch, as well as his costume, were provided by a service. Person not identified. And yeah, you missed the ending.
Voiceplay is awesome, my favourite. The others were great but my heart belongs to Voiceplay. Jeff's base absolutely wins me over every time. Thanks for the great reactions.
@Alexandria Hauser His french accent is a thing of beauty! It should be studied everywhere! In fact I'm practising right now - 🎵 Le poisson le poisson🎶 🐟🔪 heeheehee hawhawhaw 🤨😆
Another reactor who lives in Florida says it's the Universal Studios Grinch, and apparently Geoff has worked there in the past, so it's possible. According to Voiceplay, it's "THE Grinch", like the character, lol 😆
I go to Universal Hollywood a lot and it's definitely the Universal Studios grinch; they use the same makeup and use similar actors in both Hollywood and Florida. This is 100% one of those actors with the exact same makeup team. The Who makeup is exactly the same as what they use in the parks too.
@@blockedblock5203 Sounds like you know more than me, ha ha. Just putting a theory out there that I heard, but I doubt Voiceplay will ever confirm who it is since it's more fun to pretend it's the character 😊
they actually wont say who played the grinch. theres 2 main theories for who played him. either one of their former members or the of the official grinch actors from universal. geoff has a past working at universal so its not off the table that he could have gotten someone he knew from there to be the grinch and do the who makeup and prosthetics on everyone else
The Grinch was played by a costume service in the area that also provided the "actor." Interesting because in the past, they've used other family members.

Mary Did You Know might be an interesting option. PTX, Voctave, David Phelps and Peter Hollens have all covered it. Have an "utterly fantastic" day!
This was filmed last month, actually, Nov 2020. The girl is a guest star, and she's only 16. She was also in their Frozen II Medley, when she was 15. They're so good at sounding amazing while making something you want to watch over and over again. Geoff (who arranged this one) and Layne are both epic at arranging in particular. They've said on some of their patreon stuff that usually whoever arranges also plans out the video, although sometimes they change it up. Also, they said one of the reasons they do so good is that whoever is arranging usually just doesn't take no for an answer in regards to vocals. They really push each other to new heights.
Since the group is out of Orlando, and some of them have past connections with Universal Studios Theme Park, I wouldn't be surprised if the Grinch was one of the theme park Grinches.
DJ, You're always talking about dissident chords and resolution. Once the holidays are over, if you haven't already, listen to VoicePlay's cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love." I think you'll love it. I think you'd find their cover of "Tennessee Whiskey" interesting as well. Just suggestions...
Fantastic reaction. Can you react to VoicePlays song. Warrior (imagine Dragons) please its amazing. Layne beatboxes while playing a violin at the same time xx

I love this version but one thing I notice about this group as oppose to Voctave and Ptx is the runs. Personally I don't like runs in a song like this.
So if I were to rate them, and... I'm honestly shocked at this result; I'd go: 1. Titans - Freshest take I've ever heard, and a shocking upset over PTX for me. 2. Pentatonix - Genuinely entertaining and that PTX spin. 3. Voctave - Absolutely classic, brings back all kinds of memories of choirs I've been in. 4. Voiceplay - Pretty cringey. Kudos to them for going for it, but it didn't quite do it for me. I dunno why, but there's always something that seems a little fake about Geoff's bass. It's _so_ far forward in the mix, so boosted to give it volume, that it seems really artificial. I'm fully aware that no bass can _truly_ project those super low notes in pulse register anywhere near the volume that a tenor can belt up around their second break, but the producer tends to put Geoff so loud and boomy that it's transparently just post production. Avi needs a lot of electronic help as well for the lower notes. The one who really blows my mind is Tim Foust. He seems to be able to project and select a variety of tones and even employ a full chest voice way down there, into the range in which Avi is growling and Geoff is pulsing.
@@vanessamorris1985 Actually, it's those, especially the "bass battle" ones, where he stands out as the least pleasant tone and the least impressive to me. The flipping back and forth through Avi's luxurious warmth, Tim's rich profundity, even Matt's clarity, purity, and uncanny accuracy, and then Geoff's... nakedly overamplified foghorn... He admits himself that he's only just learning a lot of bass techniques, that he still has trouble hitting subharmonics and growls accurately. Anyway, I dunno. I know he's popular, and has fans, and there's nothing wrong with that, or with his fans... I'm just kind of not one of them. I think he's a great guy, and obviously he's a talented arranger. I just personally don't find his voice very pleasant to listen to, or how far forward in their mix that less-than-pleasant tone tends to be placed.
Geoff arranged it. He's a mastermind
Him and Layne have amazing arrangements
They recently lost their longtime high tenor and are having guest fill-ins. This girl is only 16, from what I understand.
I hope they keep her as a permanent member of the group. She's amazing, and seems to fit really well.
