I am more of a hardware guy...But I will say this. The very fact that the OP X II pro is literally one of the oldest vst emulations around and still sounds better then the Arturia in 2020 is VERY telling.
@@zxbryc The developers need to do some other synths. This is one soft synth I use and it sounds great! This and the PG 8X are the 2 vsts that have a nice analog feel to them.
@@zxbryc I think the Pro II was rebuilt outside of synth edit iirc. I think the original Pro 1 was indeed synth edit. If it is, or it isn't, it sounds damn amazing for its age. I do think Obsession is giving it a run for its money, but Obsession doesn't get as deep in the woods as OPX Pro II because it's tuning/calibration stability controls alone.
Yes, they are modelled on different synths, but the Sonic Projects OP-X still amazes me. Made so many years ago and is a fantastic emulation and sounding vst. Smooth and musical. I don't know who is behind Sonic Projects, but i wish they made more !
Ok so this is what happened. I listened to the behringer ub xa the other and was kind of like. Nahhhh not there. I tried telling myself I was making it up in my head. So the other night after I remembered I had OPX pro 2 . I fired it up and OMFG I nearly fell off my chair !!
Well, there is definitely a massive difference in the filter that goes back to the differences between the two synths. The SSM filter chip in the OB-X and the CEM filter in the OB-Xa are very different beasts. So even if both are in 24db mode, there is no way to make them sound the same, even on the hardware. There also seems to be a big difference in the envelopes with steep decay slopes, and that speaks more to choices made by Arturia. Both of the originals used the CEM3310 for an envelope generator.
From what I've test and listen on internet... ARturia's OB-Xa has an amazing interface! Period. OP-X Pro II and OP-X sounds (IMHO) much, much, much warmer, real, fat. I actually can't tell why but, OPX just sounds right and analog!
Sonic Projects OP-X Pro II, to this day still one of the most vintage sounding Vst ever made and that includes some modern day hardware. The Diva is up there too, and a major reason is the adjustable slop function on both synths. I found settings for the slop dials on the OB-X pro a very long time ago which i always use and it makes the programmed sounds more alive.
Spot on review! Bought the OP-X Pro II in 2015. Still hands down the best one out there if you want the vintage real sound. Other decent emulations out there but if you want the one that sounds like the real deal .... get OP-X Pro II! Love it!
I've had the OP-X for years, and everytime I load it up, I find myself sifting through the umpteen available Banks, and having an hour of musical nostalgia. But I never seem to get any music made with it! :^/ But its coverage of classic sounds is truly boggling. I like what I hear of the Arturia, it's very ear-friendly, and doesn't duplicate the OP-X. Given infinite $ resources, I'd buy it.
I use the rack version, that comes in the package, in huge format. It gives me very good access to the synth, and I kind of like the odd things about the interface, made by someone who is first and foremost interested in the way it sounds! I even wonder if the original OB-X sounds as good as this vst! :)
It's amazing that the OP-X still reigns supreme for old-school Oberheim emulations. Check out the Synapse Obsession, it rocks as well. Between the OPX and Obsession, I'm good to go for my Oberheim jones.
Thanks for the great test. I work with both and tried the opposite way - rebuild an OP-X Pro II sound on the OB-Xa - I could not get close, which is clear since they emulate different synths. In the OB-Xa I missed „emotions“, which you called analogue feeling. And thats it. OB-Xa is a great plugin, but I prefer OP- Pro II. There is a great soundbank called „famous“ for it. Something like that could promote Arturia a lot.
I concur late to the party of course. Arturia needs a real good sound designer to bring out what made that synth famous. My opinion here. Sonic nailed it.
I also love the OP-X Pro II (also because of the massive amount of famous presets that it comes with), but I've noticed that in larger projects, the OP-X Pro II can be quite buggy, especially with the arpeggiator etc. It hasn't been updated for quite a while. I thought the Arturia synth would be a nice replacement, but I've noticed that it is very CPU hungry (way more than OP-X Pro II). So you're right, there's no single solution. Unless OP-X Pro II gets a good update (which I hope they'll do now that Arturia has become its main competitor).
Didn't see your soundpart yet before but Arturia doesn't give me any Oberrheim feeling while OP=X is instant Oberheim vibe with even the panning responding exactly like the hardware. Simply impressive for a plugin emulation imo
What clinched the OP-X Pro II for me, is that I'm a big fan of Killing Joke. I tried to emulate their 'Love Like Blood' sound, which with the OP-X Pro II took me all of five minutes of tweaking to get an absolutely spot on sound, while I haven't yet been able to get it out of the Arturia OB-Xa. As much as I love the Arturia stuff, which I use all the time, the OB-Xa, while good in its own right, doesn't do it for me as far as reproducing actual Oberheim OB-X sounds. Sonic Projects got it right from the get go.
You can have a full screen view of the OP-X. You can install it on top of the existing version. They actually offer many different versions- rack, small view, medium view, full screen view
@@FoliaSound It should have been included in the 64bit version. Not sure about the time. Maybe they introduced it later. I use the full screen and it works great. I just installed the version right over the existing install. Only took about a minute.

Nice one! Thanks a lot. The OP-X is just beautiful and it sounding exactly like it should ...Lush and Creamy :) ...I just love it! There is another plugin: discoDSP OB-Xd which I haven't tested yet but the sound demos are also pretty nice. Maybe you can make a round two with the discoDSP OB-Xd and maybe the AlyJamesLab OB-XTRM Plugin, which is also very nice I think and compare it to the Arturia and Sonic Project. This would be very interessting and even more if you have a real OB-X standing around :) Thanks man. Cheers
As owner of an OB8 and Matrix 1000 I can say that OP-X truly sounds and feels like an Oberheim. Of course it lacks the balls but soundwise he truly nailed it. And even still today in 2023. Did you check the freeware OB-XD from DiscoDSP? Also very very nice. A bit less Oberheim sounding but one of my fave freewares and probably closer to the Arturia soundwise. I use OB-XD and OP-X both quite a lot. Thanks for the test! Was curious about them 2 in a test 🙏
This comparison cinches the reason I dislike Arturia's emulations so much. As "Analogue" as they try to be, there's always this "digital harmonic" that grates on my nerves.
