That's kinda what I was thinking, too. My thought was, since I know he's trying to keep this cheap, he's already got the road above the shop that the contractors had to make; if he made that road permanent, he could dig a lined ditch or a French Drain on the uphill side of the road that would catch a lot of the water coming down that hill and divert it away from that slope. He could then extend that road to curve downhill beyond the end of the riprap wall, and have the ditch peter out several yards beyond that point. It'd take a lot of the load off that drain tile and help keep the area behind his shop from getting inundated when it rains. You really need a bathroom. It's a good idea to either have drains in the floor or have it tilted towards the door so the water flows out. That was fun, thanks for sharing !
Derick I’ve been a fan for years you never brag about anything . Sometimes I wish you would , because by far you are the best automotive entertainment show on RUclips. Thank for keeping it so real 👍
Just to let you know. Before dumping dirt. Scratch the top soil off first. Top soil under fill dirt will always hold moisture. Meaning your berm will never be stable. Then use that top soil to cover the berm
@@davidnichols1363 you can’t remove the topsoil once a berm is on it. And if you listened to Derek. He intends to buy fill dirt. The way that dirt is being dumped in a line. That’s their berm to be leveled. Maybe if you knew anything about what your watching you’d know what’s going on. Don’t put your foot in your mouth by being ignorant
@@edgemonsiteworksllc3369 Do you know what type of topsoil is in that area? It looks pretty sandy. What's you're concern with the berm not being stable? Is it going to shift, is it going to erode away? For what he's wanting to use it for I don't see the issue.
@@ChevyC-hf6km lol. I’ve done mass earth excavation coast to coast. My family roots are Tennessee. And no it isn’t sandy. The lower lands are prime black top soil. The hills. Or mountains as my cousins call them are good quality to just not as thick. The hills are primarily slate stone. Again another guy putting his foot in his mouth
You are the ONLY family friendly show on the magic window to the world. So… don’t worry about how people perceive you, cause we who are here already know and we love you and your family dearly! Keep on bringing the past alive my friend.
Derek I just had a great idea for a video series. Once the barn is finished, you know you're gonna need to acquire a few more vehicles to fill it up, right? Well my idea is the 'Sea to Shining Sea' series. Basically you pick up a car, sight unseen, from the four corners of the USA and drive them all back to Tennessee. We're talking Maine, Key West, San Diego, Seattle (or Alaska if you really want to up the ante). And if you want to extend the series you could add on a car from each state - would absolutely love to follow those journeys!
Your drain pipe for the gutter downspouts off the back side of the should be routed in solid pipe and separate from the perforated French drain pipe. Also the gravel should be separated from the nearby soil with a filter fabric.
Agree! gutter water tend to flush down biologic materials in the drain pipe clogging it up ,this can be partly addressed installing leaf grades where the roof gutter pipes dumps out into the ground pipes. But dumping water in the drain pipe is also keeping the French drains/ ground moisture . So separate pipes is a good idea even with leaf grades.
Correct. And the Bieris are facing a wall of water. That's the red clay from north Florida through Georgia, becoming the sand-clay mix. Much more stable. But look uphill. It looks like there might be roof, or pavement upstream. None of this stuff slows water down and a French Drain is a band aid. That's why the building is caulked and has a stain line on it. Do y'all get where the late-stage of hurricanes drift off, after the coast? Raleigh. Tennessee. There will come 12 inches of rain in 24 hours. This is the Lodge. You can interrupt that. You have diverted it, with a berm. My opinion, you need an elongated pond, just after the berm. With diversion walls, or berms. The point is to have reins on the runaway horse. It could be done, with a shunt for storm events to let the water go. I would be happy to help, I will reach out to engineer friends, we could maybe fix this. The amount of water this property has to receive and manage is far beyond the capacity of a 4" Perforated Pipe in a French Drain. Cook some hot dogs for some storm water engineers. Peace.
My dad doubled his pole barn when he ran out of room as well...though he pretty quickly filled the addition. I expect no matter how big you make it, you'd find a way to fill it.

Of all the youtubers I watch you Derek deserve this more than anyone. Having Vanishing Paint on the lift is great subliminal bragging rights. Love your channels and enjoy watching you and your family grow.
Derek, This looks like a great project and will be perfect to meet your needs. About 15 years ago I built a 24X60 foot pole barn on my property in west central NJ. The main purpose was to store a 42 foot diesel pusher motorhome and not have to winterize it. I opted to use concrete poles below grade that clamped onto 3 2x6 sandwiched lumber to make the poles (8' apart). I used conventional wood trusses and a conventional shingle roof. I'm glad I did. No rain leaks and very quiet inside when it rains. I used about an inch or spray foam insulation on all the exterior metal walls plus 6" fiberglass. The ceiling has 12" of fiberglass insulation. The 14x14 foot overhead door is insulated. 100 amp electric sub panel was added. The floor is 8" thick concrete. walls and ceiling are sheetrock. I contracted out the construction of the pole barn and concrete floor. To save money, I did the interior framing, insulation, electrical and sheetrock myself. The hardest part was in hanging 4x12' pieces on the ceiling 15' off the floor alone (used a drywall lift). The insulation and thick concrete floor has allowed the interior to stay above 35 degrees even when we have had nights below zero and highs below 32. So far I've never had to add heat to keep the interior above freezing and never had to winterize the motorhome.
Gonna be a great shop Derek. You and Jessica have worked hard over the years to get where you are. With all of your success you haven't forgotten where you came from. I've been watching you since you were working out of your garage on your days off. Congratulations ya'll!!
Derek ,all your success is well deserved.I had my own company for 25 years ,so I know how every one thinks i am rich but never considered all my 12 hour days plus i did the same and reinvested continually as my company grew.If it was easy every one would do it. We watch you because you are not that guy and we know it.Could not happen to a better guy and family man! Keep on keepen on and God Bless you all !
You've come a long way from a broken Iphone taped to a garage door. Nice to be there along for the ride the past few years. It's great to see you build and grow.
Man I wish I could describe how much of a role model you are for me and certainly many other people. You check every single box of what I'm working towards in my life. I'm only 22 so I've still got a lot of work and learning to do but boy do ya give a young feller some much needed hope and motivation to keep climbing that mountain. Much love Derek
Looks great Derek! It's good to hear you talk about your reasons why you chose to show the build. I lost interest in a lot of other channels just because it became unrelatable to me. Channels that were doing cement pours that cost more than my house. I'm not in a position where I could drop that much $$$ on a project, and like you said most times it comes off like they are bragging or flaunting what they got. As always I appreciate your budget-minded approach. Your vids have always been a how-to for the regular guy, not just the actual work but also how to pay for it!
I love that time lapse of the excavator and the dump. Really interesting. Been watching for weeks. I think it’s about time to “join” the VGG channel. Y’all are awesome, man.

Your shop expansion/investment is truly the right thing to do! Oooofta! "Is that a dinosaur bone?" Everyone of us fellers (and fellettes) is cheering. (neery a one thinks you are boasting.) No one more worthy of this, than yourself, J, and boys. You have certainly earned it. And of course it will mean more gooder videos and shows for a guy - for eternities to come. (PS: I am a 65-yr old feller out-west... a big old fan, life-long Idaho farm boy.)
You don’t have to thank us. We should be thanking you. You take time to share your life and adventures and it costs us nothing to join in with the excitement. So thank you sir. I hope you get all the shop space you ever want!
Makes a guy happy to see you got such good guys taking their time doin that work for ya. That operator sure left no stone unturned, did a great job sifting through that dirt! Also, Derek have you ever thought about the idea of adding a loft for some additional storage?
This is brilliant I've watched you go from a tiny garage attached to your house to cars stored all over the place and now to this you have worked hard to get to this point and I am so happy for you and your family
The build contractors ran into a perfect storm when they took on this project. There was a sufficient amount of rock on site to build a good solid retaining wall plus by removing the fill in one area and using it to transform another part of the yard needing privacy and security is absolute genius. The contractor saved a bundle on fuel with the short hauling distance, it was indeed a win win situation for everyone. Good luck DB/VGG! You don't have to remind us bro, we all know you are a humble guy, thanks for sharing and making it an interesting watch, looking forward to the rest of the build. On another note..., With present roof height, a fella might consider building an upper Mezzanine area on either end for storing parts, this will free up all kinds of wall and floor space, more elbow room on ground level for wobble pops, swinging ratchets and whatnots, .
Do are least 4"×6" post, 6"×6" would be better. How you can probably buy laminate posts, (laminated treated on the bottom spf the rest of the way) cheaper than treated and straighter. I built poll barns in Michigan for 22 years. you can get your overhead door tracks to go farther up the wall (high lift kit) and even to follow the pitch inside the roofline. Gets them up out of the way, might be helpful with those Wildfire lifts that you can move around
Looking forward to this build. I'd say you've done a fantastic job of showing us all your project . This is information. NOT bragging. Keep up the great work with the card, your land and your boys, Derek and Jess.. Take care and God Bless. Peace
I can't believe they didn't use treated lumber in the old part, and that asphalt is so thin like you said. Do it right the first time, you got that right. I even used pressure treated lumber for my shed. Hard to believe that older part is only 14 year's old. I have a 2 1/2 car barn, with an upstairs, and thick cement. I believe it was built in 1986, but it was built with treated lumber. My grandpa always taught me that if you build, do it right once, and do it right, or you will be patching or doing it over. I saw a video where some tweaker stole from you, know it was a few week's ago, but sorry anyone would do that to such a kind and giving family like you and your family. I hope they caught them, because being robbed really violates you in a personal way, and I've been there. When you don't know if it's a tweaker trying to get money for the next high, a fan a bit far out there, a casual stranger that just saw your stuff outside and helped themselves, or a guy needing a psrt. No matter what the issue, they could have asked for your help. I hope you have some good security, because Jessica and the boy's will feel safer when you are away. God bless.
The asphalt was thin but asphalt gets most of its strength from the underlying well draining aggregate base. Asphalt needs a seal coat about every 7 years to lengthen its life. Sadly now VGG has to deal with poor drainage on the entire site because the initial construction failed to design for good drainage.
I don't know much about buildings, but I helped my pop put up a 20x30, using pressure-treated 6x6's stuck into concrete. That was in '91 and it's still solid as a rock and it has taken some major wind and snow abuse over the decades.

Your true fans would never believe you would ever gloat. You’re probably the most humble down to earth dude on the inter webs.
You really need a bathroom.
It's a good idea to either have drains in the floor or have it tilted towards the door so the water flows out.
That was fun, thanks for sharing !
Especially for the BossLady!!!
Derick I’ve been a fan for years you never brag about anything . Sometimes I wish you would , because by far you are the best automotive entertainment show on RUclips. Thank for keeping it so real 👍
I 2nd that Fer sure
Just to let you know. Before dumping dirt. Scratch the top soil off first. Top soil under fill dirt will always hold moisture. Meaning your berm will never be stable. Then use that top soil to cover the berm
If his contractor knows what he's doing the he will do that and compact the base
@@edgemonsiteworksllc3369 lay off the wobble pops .
Peace.
gabion baskets are cheap for retaining walls if u have stone to fill them with allready.....i think.....maybe
So humble. So rare to see on RUclips. Great to see u raising your kids that way as well. God bless y’all. PS. U need a parts room
My dad doubled his pole barn when he ran out of room as well...though he pretty quickly filled the addition. I expect no matter how big you make it, you'd find a way to fill it.
That's an easy bet!
More room means more toys and projects
5:00 Thank you, we like watching you, some of us cannot go out as much. So this is pure family entertainment. It is the best!
I love that you and Jessica are modest enough that you feel you have to explain what your doing .
That's why I'm such a big fan thanks for letting us into your lives, and as always keep up the good work.
I'm so happy for you big guy.may God bless this yard and your beautiful family. My wife and I watch and laugh with you every video. So glad you moved to worm weather. In mighty name of Jesus plz continue to do what you do.thnk u fir all u do for your family and us fans
Amen!
Having a shop is every man's dream. Show us how it's done like you do with cars. We appreciate what you do for us, and for yourselves.
Of all the youtubers I watch you Derek deserve this more than anyone. Having Vanishing Paint on the lift is great subliminal bragging rights. Love your channels and enjoy watching you and your family grow.
This is one of my low key one of my favourite not regularly posting channels. There’s gold in random 2nd channel vids…
I drove the dump truck in this video . Derek was super nice, and even autographed a license plate, he gave me. Thanks Derek.
Well a guy can't wrap his mind around all the what nots goin on. It's definitely something. Glad y'all are sharing this with us. 🤘🏻🇺🇸
What a humble man. And a gentlemen. Keep being you!
One of the most humbling guys a feller has seen on the interwebs. Thank you, and the family, for all of your content!
This is going to be a game changer. Derek you and your family are the most down to earth people I've seen on the tube. Love watching your videos.
A feller is pretty happy to see you succeed and achieve your dreams while keeping that kindness and humility. I raise my wobble pop to ya.
It is great to see you doing well Derek! Keeping the family involved is pretty cool to watch. You sir are living the American dream!
America Dream! Congratulations you guys! You bring joy to the world 🌍,and deserve every bit of it!
It's awesome to see Derek being able to do stuff like this. I love seeing the bigger garage, bigger house, more cars, and the financial burden (hopefully) lifted. I hope it only gets bigger and brings in more money
Congratulations, you deserve it, you and Jessica work really hard. We all really enjoy the content.
I'm happy for you and your build. Like the saying a garage can never be big enough.
Really enjoyed this episode. Very interesting to see how the lads get it done. Saw a sneaky Mustang in the background...hoping for more ford content yes!!
I love seeing you guy's on another channel, wish the weather in the mitten was as nice as it is down there. God bless you and the family.
This is brilliant I've watched you go from a tiny garage attached to your house to cars stored all over the place and now to this you have worked hard to get to this point and I am so happy for you and your family
I love watching the building of all things. Cars, trucks, buses, buildings you name it. Thanks for sharing and keep the videos coming.
I imagine that will be a nice shop when it's all finished
Do are least 4"×6" post, 6"×6" would be better. How you can probably buy laminate posts, (laminated treated on the bottom spf the rest of the way) cheaper than treated and straighter. I built poll barns in Michigan for 22 years. you can get your overhead door tracks to go farther up the wall (high lift kit) and even to follow the pitch inside the roofline. Gets them up out of the way, might be helpful with those Wildfire lifts that you can move around
Good call on the posts! Laminated, 2x6 posts are stronger and will stay straight without twisting like solid posts will..
Looking forward to this build. I'd say you've done a fantastic job of showing us all your project . This is information. NOT bragging. Keep up the great work with the card, your land and your boys, Derek and Jess..
Take care and God Bless. Peace
Just keep drainage in mind with all those hills behind you. Extra Lee way never hurt. So happy to see you living your dream
Going to be great when it's done, I'm sure the extra room will be nice to have. Right on and as always all the best to you and your awesome family!!!
Hopefully one day we will get a vice grip garage museum so we can visit all those cars
You and your family are good people. We appreciate you and you’re content. ♥️
Ive been in construction for 45 years and i can tell you that equipment operator is one bad hombre!!! No wasted motion!!!! Big thumbs 👍 ip.
It’s not bragging, we are all happy for you guys to be able to make more room for a fellers work stuff. We love the fact that you are willing to share e process. We love the content!!
No matter how much space you have,it’s NEVER enough. That goes for work benches and shelving. 😂
You and your family are truly genuine people.
Don't feel bad or apologize, you're doing well for yourself sir. I thank you for all you do to entertain us! Your boys will be grateful for the video memoirs one day and be grateful for the time you got to spend with them!
You are the Man Derek! It’s always a treat to “Dial into your Channel”!
The guy that works 4 me is always talking g about your channel and alot of my viewers say u r their fav channel. I have only seen 2 or 3 videos but I do like your pace and Informative info
1 more thing I've we have been on essential craftsman podcast and talked about on their main channel. I had to ask I'm dead serious. Lmk
Derek you are such a awesome genuine guy. Very down to earth. That's why we love watching you. Not many people left in this world like you. Don't ever change who you are. The property is looking fantastic. 👍👍
Thanks for sharing....Even though watching these guys spare no expense and build our dream buildings is fun....Seeing a guy build things, the way we out here in the real world have to do it is not only interesting, but informative as well! Thanks Derek !
you keep on expanding within the means of the VG family.IF YOU BUILD IT WE WILL COME!!!!
Just genuine folks who share their lives frankly -and they are funny. We sure need to know that folks like this are findable and enjoy sharing with them. Stay as ordinary as you are. Greetings from Orlando.
Derek, you are a kind, humble and hardworking man. That’s why you are number one with this feller.
Can’t be sorry for doing whats best for your business, family, and comfort. I might be just as excited as you are
And brother, we appreciate you as well! People who work hard and love their family and their neighbor should be rewarded! Keep doin' what you do, yer the best!!
This is awesome! I’m with you 100%! Make enough room to make the videos work! I wish I could come help you do it! 38 years in contruction! I with you guys!! Love the channel!! It’s my first go to videos!! 👍👍💜💜
I became a fan with the white caddy rescue. I've been a fan ever since. And I'll continue to.
Ya all are most humble people I know on RUclips and that's why I watch every show please keep up the hard work and stay humble
My 1st job in construction was putting up steel buildings, digging footings, pouring concrete, brings back memories. Thanks for bringing us along.
So awesome that you are able to build the area you need. I’ve never heard you brag about anything and that’s why I watch. Much respect to you and yours
Buddy…I’ve been watching you for a long time and I gotta say that it’s nice to have someone represent the blue collar workin man. Thank you.
I like to say thank you and your family for bringing us into your home....
Late comment but Derek no need to apologize for showing the fruits of your labour through hard work and determination of you and your family. Sweat'o'yer'brow kinda feller and we all appreciate. Tell you what a guy could have thrown out the call for some assistance and I guarantee a throng of your fans would have shown up with shovels, machines and brow sweat and made it happen for a guy just to give some back for all the joy you bring us.
I think it's great what you do for your family! And great for us as your FANS.
Thank you so much for showing this barn build. Can't wait to see more ! 😃 😊 😃 😀 😄 😁
Thank you Derek, I figure it's a fair trade my time watching for your time entertaining the past few years.
Way back when I first starting watching you- I think because you made it work with very little- and the items you did buy like you would say “because it was on sale or the cheapest” you showed us all how you could get something with very little and that is why I still watch you today! Simplest never have I thought you gloated over anything- but Derek your right many do I watch other you tubers that because they have money they do things that aren’t right and they don’t listen to others that have the knowledge. So I’m happy to see you grow and watch your family involved and love watching your boys with “little vice grip” keep true and do what you know! It never gets old 👍🏻❤️
VGG is by FAR our families favorite thing to watch. We look forward to the new content. It's nice to see behind the scenes on VGL. Thanks Derek for all you do.
