  • Between 1941 and 1944 over fourteen thousand Volkswagen Type 166 Schwimmwagen cars were built, making it the most massed produced amphibious car in history. Only around 160 of those vehicles have survived.
In the water a screw propeller attached to the rear engine cover could be lowered and this was driven by a direct extension from the engines crankshaft. This meant that the screw only worked in a forward motion, and if the car had to be reversed in the water either a paddle needed to be used, or the four wheel drive could be engaged in reverse allowing the wheel rotation to slowly take the vehicle backwards.
The two front wheels doubled as the rudder so directional control was maintained with the the steering wheel both on land, and in the water.
Capable of both 2 and 4 wheel drive, the Schwimmwagen could reach top speeds of up to 80km/h on land and 10km/h in water.

Only 160 have survived! This thing would be a great vehicle to have in New York City.

Maybe you could retrofit a VW bug engine in one of them. People have made all sorts of overland vehicles using the VW Bug and the VW bus (aka Kombi) engines, specially in latin America where they're extremely popular

That's what I want to do, get hold of one of these Czech assemblies and retrofit a VW aircooled engine into one, only thing I need to figure out is how to adapt a Bug transmission to take a 4wd takeoff shaft, like the original Schwimms had

a more expirenced guy said to me ~ " the GPA is like a barge... great on water .not on land / the schwimwagen is like a boat thats great on land but not in water "

Those were nice - too many times I see them with wider tires that were on them originally, and it kind of ruins the look.

I would think that would also reduce the effectiveness of the front wheels as rudders.
