He meant to say, non colonized Western world!
Btw, he failed to mention that the European culture goes way further back than that of the US, Canada or Australia for that matter and that certainly has an impact on the European standards compared to the rest!
Every single nation in Europe has its own culture and own identity for around a thousand or more years while the US was only colonized around 350 years or so with a mixture of Europeans and started to create their own mixed culture instead of merely preserving or copying their European roots!
If history had taken a different course and New York would still be New Amsterdam it would be an entirely different city with a different culture and different standards, and so probably the entire US too, and most likely the world!

Disney Paris had a rough start actually. They didn't do their market research right and completely ignored the fact that we have more vacation time and are not willing to blow our whole budget on just a theme park. Also at first they didn't allow guest to bring in their own food even checking bags at the entrance! That didn't sit well with us. We are used to parks and museums offering beautiful picknick areas to enjoy your own food from home.

They also wanted to attract customers from all over Europe. Completely overlooking language barriers (can you imagine standing in line for a movie-themed ride with plenty of movie and audio clips where you have to queue into 30 different queues for 30 different languages?) and the fact that people already have suitable theme parks in easy travel distance. I've been to a couple when I was a kid, for some it meant getting up at 5 am, but we never took a hotel room.

  • @cyano741

The low attendance rate in theme parks, is because Europeans have SO many more options when it comes to entertainment/doing things in their spare time. I live in America at the moment. Large stretched out strip malls, with hardly any cultural significance or stuff to do around aside very American things like Axe throwing, playing pool, going to a giant movie theatre etc. Anywhere in Europe, you live to live. And life is all around you. You walk outside because walking is an experience. No one walks in America, because there's nothing to do or to experience in suburbs and endless urban sprawl.

Europe also has the advantage of being much older that the US so no matter where you are you usually only have to drive for 1 hour at most to visit some sort of historical building, monastery or castle.

Yes there are sightseeing's in ancient cities, but most cities in Europe, have younger infrastructure that uses the human experience as a forefront. It is just a cultural/mindset difference. We live very different lives culturally.

One thing that adds to European theme parks, and especially UK ones, is the issue of planning restrictions. The reason why Nemesis at Alton Towers in England was such a hit, is that because of height planning restrictions, most of the ride had to be built in a dug out hole. This creates an amazing experience where you feel you have no idea if you're going to hit the side of the wall or not and no idea where you are going next.

I’ve been to Phantasia Land a couple of times, it’s fantastic! They even have an indoor drop tower, I don’t think that’s really common.😂 Also, the park has a roller coaster (Colorado Adventure) opened on May 11th 1996 by the legendary King Michael Jackson. Proud to say I’ve been sitting in the coaster seat he has been sitting in.😱
Anyway, it is a great park! Though I really want to go the US one day, visiting LA and Universal Studio’s and stuff. I’m definitely not just going for the Theme Parks!

Vekoma, one of the manufacturers, is actually less than 30 minutes away from where I live. For 10 years we actually lived in the village where this company is at. We would see it when they were making a rollercoaster because they would build it before it was completely finished. From where we live we can visit 2 themeparks, Efteling and Phantasialand, within an hour from our home, by car obviously.

I'm a hardcore themepark and rollercoaster enthusiast living right next to phantasialand. I used to go there multiple times a month for several years.
What I find ironic is that whilst disney tried to set foot into Europe with Disneyland Paris that place has been close to bankruptcy since ages and no one really cares for it that much, yeah it's a fun park and all but it's immensely overshadowed by a lot of the individually owned parks scattered across europe.
Also with phantasialand in brühl there have never really been any complaints from the people living there. Phantasialand cannot expand, on one side there are the houses of people, on another there's a nature reserve and on the third there's the autobahn, not only are they confined in space but they have very strict regulations on how tall they are allowed to build their rides as well. They are and always will be confined to that small space that they are in. But, I personally see that as a very positive thing since limitation forces innovitation and Phantasialand has shown that with every ride they have created. Instead of building up they build down, creating immersive mlti layered tunnel system and floors that the rollercoasters are based on to be able to create larger drops in a place where they arent allowed to build over I think 20-25 meters above ground.
Phantasialand is also very respectful towards the people living there. All the rides close to houses are built indoors for noise reduction, once a year the entire park is closed for visitors and citizens of the town get the entire park for themselves, free admission. And one of the stories I really like is that there's an old lady living basically on phantasialands grounds in her house and they have made a contract that she is allowed to live there and they cannot build there or anything until she has died.
Edit: Also the fog in the steampunk area in phansasialand is real, it comes out of the cutters, out of the pipes etc.

He's not wrong. Two of our favourite parks are Legoland Billund (Denmark) and Nigloland (France). These are parks that we visit while visiting the country and are just a fantastic day out. We'll be going to Nigloland for the fourth time coming summer. It's in the north of France and a two night stop over there with one day for the park just beautifully cuts our travel time from the south of France in half. It's nothing like Efteling, but it still provides enough rides and attractions for a wonderful day and it's not too expensive so we can even afford to eat in the restaurants in stead of carrying around our own food.

I think it is always the same. The things you see where you actually live are being "normal" or unexciting to yourself so you appreciate a change of scenery. I did never feel "special" about living around 15 castles in a 30 mile radius. This doesn't make my place of living "better", just different. What drives my levels of excitement are my once in a while Trips to the U.S. where I do several week long road trips to visit your famously National Parks which in my view are more beautiful, bigger and also better maintained due to your great National Park Service. It is a lifetime goal of mine to visit at least 90% of all US national parks.

I don't know about the U.S., but at least in Germany, there are themeparks without any rides to speak of. My children liked for instance the Saurierpark Kleinwelka and Kulturinsel Einsiedel, which are also close to each other. Kulturinsel Einsiedel (Cultural Island of Einsiedel) is actually the easternmost point of Germany. They are very small, just enough for an afternoon visit, but they work.

I think that's really one of the main differences.
The US is very focused on offering bigger thrills and crazier coasters than the year before but as a result many of the coasters have little to no theming and some themeparks even run ads and billboards inside.
Europe is much more focused in building parks that offer people an escape from those things. The park is construced as it's own mystical world instead of just a place to house rollercoasters.

the only Orlando like large theme park resort where people fly from far away to visit, could be Europa Park. But more and more park go for resort type and build hotels and an additional water park (see Phantasialand, Plopsa parks, Energylandia etc.). Also after visiting Orlando resorts you will be surprised its cheap in Europe.
lol public transport is not the most effective here in Europe, especially if not living in a metropolitan area. Taking the train or bus takes mostly 2x or 3x longer as a car drive. I'm from Luxembourg and there are like 9 theme parks in a less than 4h drive away. Also Phantasialand is NOT in rural Germany its right next to Cologne

In Europe, there is still lack of English speakers.

also, beyond the smaller size of most parks, some of them face other challenges. Phantasialand, for example has strict regulations on what they can build, being right up against some housing. So they cannot build as tall and have to get more creative, like their B&M Inverted Coaster, Black Mamba, which has been build mostly into trenches connected by tunnels. Some of Phantasialands theming is also to prevent noise complaints, with fake rocks around Taron and Rookburgh being completely enclosed on all sides.
    source: I work there ^^

@@lansulin depends on the day. Weekends will be very full. Taron tends to get less long queues after mid-day. Phantasialand is not that far from the Netherlands, especially if you come to Limburg in NL. My advise would be if you visit the Netherlands, make a place in the province Limburg you base, and you can easily travel through the Netherlands or to Germany, Belgium, France, etc. And it will show you more of the diversity of the Netherlands, and not just the flat lands. From Eindhoven (N. Brabant, close to Limburg) it is about an 1:30 hour drive to Phantasialand. Also 1:30 to Walibi Holland [Flevoland], and similar distance to Walibi Belgium [near Brussels but in Wallonia part.] Walibi Holland (in Flevoland) might be a thing for you. There also is a Walibi in Belgium - in a time in history it also was known as Six Flags.
From Eindhoven to the Efteling is about 30 minutes to an hour.
Also close to Eindhoven is Helmond translated Hellmouth, nothing really special, a few interesting building designs, monuments, it also has a castle, and a "unique" name in my opinion. But I would also recommend places in the province Limburg self, depending on what your tastes are like - what you want to see and do during a vacation/stay. Just because it is so different from the typical Dutch stereotype.
There also is a Asterix and Obelix park in France from the comics and movies; Parc Astérix. [3:30 hours away from Eindhoven, and France has Toll routes, so there is that.]
I am European - but would be considered more of a "local" - as child and with school etc. I've visited most the theme parks in my life.
As an adult I don't have the time or money for it, even if public transport is an option I would advise a car for transport, or parts of the transport.

I love "le puy du fou" and futuroscope in France and Europapark in Germany! In France, there are plenty of smaller theme parks that children love, such as the "Little Prince" park or the Tellure mining park in the middle of nature (caving and rock climbing) or in the middle of the forest with zip lines.... I haven't tried phantasialand yet but it looks awesome. In Western Europe (France, Germany, Belgium and Spain), we have a lot of choice. They are created according to the environment and or the history of the region and the country so that it is also playful and cultural.

Although I love the Efteling, I’d much rather go to Walibi Holland (which used to be Six Flags), purely because the coasters there are much more entertaining, even though the theming isn’t quite as good.. That’s why my number 1 themepark I’d really love to go to one day is Cedar Point..
