I have very fond memories in 3 and 4 of desperately fleeing up a wall while lead balls bounce of the masonry while muskets crack and belch fire below. It was incredibly cinematic for 1 and 2 you did the whole thing with crossed fingers and clinched cheeks cause you COULD get away or you could get shot it may go either way. In Unity if someone in the next postal code, over a small wall, and past a dense crowd draws his smoothbore pistol it will inevitably politely weave its way through the crowd and around all the tables and obstacles and bury itself in you backside like thats its morning comute and not an impossible shot. You simply could not flee from gunfire in unity.

  • @ThatGuyErazo
    @ThatGuyErazo Год назад +132

    One thing that didn't do Connor justice is that there are different climbing mechanics for different buildings, based on the ledges they're going to have to climb. Aveline, for example, uses the same engine as ACIII, meaning the parkour is identical, but the church she climbed had much fewer things to grab onto than the building Connor climbed. If Connor climbed the same building as Aveline, he would've had an identical time to her.

I am fine with the current examples but there are multiple conditions that you can bring up to prove that one is faster than the other and in that specific case it might be true. Ezio for example has a jump feature while climbing up to reach a higher ledge, just adding that to the end of the climb would make him faster but I don't think that would be a fair comparison to the rest of the assassins.

It was still fluid and it increased the skill ceiling since it made the player have to think about using their full arsenal to go quicker. You were encouraged to use ejects and such as that to avoid straight climbing a wall. It’s arguably faster now to just hold forward until you reach a rooftop. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but I prefer it by miles over the RPG games. When I started Revelations I thought he would be old and start being slower or get rusty but instead he was learning new ways to assassinate and travel. He always said that he was "eager to learn" and he searched for Altair's library for knowledge.
    The hookblade and the bombs. For an older assassin who was a Mentor he never let his position hold him back from learning from Yusuf. I have only played as Ezio, Shay Cormac and the Frye Twins so far with a little bit of Kenway and Altair but I cannot have a say in the others especially Connor. I plan to play him after I'm done with Revelations.
    Either way I haven't felt the feeling of actually climbing and doing parkour and having fun while doing it in a game like I do with Altair and Ezio mainly. Plus the hookblade and the zipline is really enjoyable to the point I avoid using the tunnel systems.

I love the exaggerated swagger of the young Italian man and the movement options that the hookblade brings (although it makes climbing feel a little bland), but the sheer variety of Arno's abilities makes me feel horrible considering I beat the game without even exploring them thoroughly. Man, I remember my first time playing AC3 I thought Connor was way faster than Ezio (I hadn't played Revelations yet), but I'm actually shocked at how slow he is. I feel like a lot of it comes down to the architecture of the buildings though; Ezio's games generally had the best architecture, because they took place in a setting where it was a big deal, but most of the later PS3 era games were in a fairly undeveloped America, so the architecture really wasn't that impressive, thus making the parkour a little slower.

People keep arguing in the comments giving different reasons when it's just the developers fault. I'd like to think that connor is the fastest climber but maybe ezio can also outmatch him with the double jump or the hookblade. Connor just seems to have that robust build out of every assassin. Or my second bet would also be Adewale or edward. It just comes down to lifestyle and lore of these characters.

    AC 3 just got that fire, the animation, the details, the lighting, scenery, and movement idk why but playing as Connor feels so god deym good and fluent, the game just so much ahead of its time. Only Unity can beat the game in term of parkour, and omg I wish they made a second game for Connor so much his story is so unfinished, he was young and bold, only fighting for the things he believed in, for freedom, but in the end its so bitter sweet to see everything he works for turn to ashed, but its so much fitting for the setting of AC3, there are no black and white, and see him finally understand that and grew as a character after everything that he lost, just so he can help desmond save the world in the future is so touching. The Templar in this game is portrayed so good that you can actually side with their ideas, that level of antagonist is what make the story peaked. Sadly most of Connor character is hidden behind side story, I wish we can get a second game for him so we can actually see the wise and older version of Connor Kenway.

    Pretty sure the reason why the rpg characters are faster is because of the size and density of the worlds.
    When a game is being developed, the scale and density of a map sometimes affects who they decide to deal with the transportation and other movements. Like a game with a huge map sometimes has the characters be faster to allow for easier travel around the map while smaller maps make it slower to have it feel bigger than it actually is or they can do what AC used to do and have an entire parkour system to keep your trips a bit more interesting.
    So because the rpg maps are bigger and more open, the characters usually travel faster than the old games whose maps are smaller or more dense and the parkour systems are kind of the whole point.

    Did you account for the potential change in climbing speed with the spacing of ledges?
    I feel like a lot of it may have came down to the fact the parkour system may have picked slower animations and vantage points due to their closeness.
    For example, when it came down to buildings with a lot of windows and seams: less efficient leaps were made compared to more smooth walls.

      Unfortunately it’s hard to make good comparisons due to how different all of the buildings are in each game. Trying to find similar buildings in all games is like where’s Waldo but 100x harder.

    • @ChaseMayProductions
      @ChaseMayProductions 11 месяцев назад

      @@seva7500 fair. Probably easier to just use the building that is most commonly found anyway, as that would be the building climbing speed that you will have to deal with most of the time anyway.
      Games like Origins have bigger buildings, but only in very specific places, so I’d imagine how that isn’t really a good indicator of anything.

    A proper test would require identical buildings, as part of the climbing speed is dependent on the type and positioning of the handholds and the top ledge of the building, since those result in different animations being played.
