I just wanted to throw my arms around you both, get you a cup of tea, some Lidl pastries, and send Shaun to do the locks for you 😂 So proud of you both for including the stressful times too. It was sad to see the Figure of Three Locks given the recent devastation there. Sending loads of love! 💜💜💜
Foxes Afloat. I knew that Colin was a really nice geezer - it's just nice to see other canal vloggers watching out for each other. As an enthusiastic hire boater, this vlog was actually hard to watch. On good days, the locks and the miles just fly by, but on those other days, every inch gives up only reluctantly. I found the Wey Navigation (where I think Jo and Michael started out) to be hard going, for no really good reason, but it was definitely 'hard'. Great vlog, in spite of everything guys.
LOL, Colin always giving Shaun a hard time. TTTRRRRRAAAAIIINNNNN. I do that to the planes that fly over our house. We had a helicopter the other day. It shook the windows. Some of the Army planes fly at tree top level. 2 or 3 at a time. And then there hot air balloons. I run outside to see them all the time. And I'm 72.
That would all have been wonderful. Yeah, its really sad to see how they look now. I feel lucky that we made the push to do this route last year as we very nearly saved it for this year.
We found the Wey hard too. Beautiful, but hard. We just put it down to use being newbies at the time and we were getting to know our boat. Looking back I just have happy memories of those days. Even though we were fast asleep in bed by 7 every night
Thumbs up but owe you 20 more. You are the only site that shows 100% of the journey warts and all. That day would break me and any single handler. Well done !!!!
It's to your credit that you not just mention your difficulties and challenges but take care to point them out. Every day teaches us something as long as we keep trying to learn.
Thank you. One of the problems is that when cruises get hard we film less. But, I didn't want to gloss over the problems we faced which is why there is so much time lapse footage in them as those cameras are always running.
Some days you're the dog, and some days you're the lampost. But a very interesting vlog, good for us to know that it isn't all a bed of roses. Take care you three.
Perseverance indeed we came that way last year going up and the locks were a pain as one most of them both gate and ground panels are above! The water level so going up without flooding well deck was a challenge and the handspike is something to behold.
@Minimallist That was just way too much for you Jo, those paddles were just not cooperating. Look at how hard Micheal had to struggle against the stinking thing. Knowing that just about any woman has much more physical capacity than me and seeing your struggles made me realise how unlikely my chances of doing a canal trip without another along as brawn. Not for all the locks but when you strike a lock like that stinker or stinkers, you just need more help than you have. One of the hardest words we have is when we have to say No to ourselves. I, as always, am in awe of you both for your 'perseverance' through some of these hard days. But, it has to be said, that scenery is just unbelievable. All that industry and the heritage of the environment. Wow! I followed your link to the pages describing the devastation of the Figure of Three Locks with the Calder flooding. Hard to imagine what it was like when you came through compared to this video taken just after the flooding had ceased enabling inspections to be undertaking. facebook.com/100001423796364/videos/2956937844363646/ Now that section is out for at least the next 12 months, Lucky you went through when you did. rest up, recover, recharge your physical and mental batteries. Looking forward to seeing this hectic rush trip close off and you get back into some sort of peace. Jo, as Dave would say, "Feel the Serenity." LOL ruclips.net/video/C8WLuQOLq5Q/видео.html
Yeah, we’re glad we got through before the storm came through... terrible how much damage the breach did. Luckily for us it’s on exactly the stretch we don’t have to repeat. M
Michael at 21.33 hilarious. We were there a few weeks before you and ended up turning around after three weeks waiting for the lock to open at Horbury due to flooding. Batteyford was in red when we went through but Ledgard in yellow. Couldn't push the gates open at Ledgard and had to ask a passer by to help. Tough locks that section. X
Phew! I am exhausted just watching. Canals are supposed to be all about relaxed cruising, taking life in the slow lane. I hope you have a less stressed year this year. I always look forward to your videos. Thank you.
That was great footage. I really felt your pain , emotionally and physically. Communication can be really difficult with the noise and length of the boat. We find we have to be very careful when shouting instructions so as not to sound angry. You did the right thing ( ofcourse ) talking it through. Cheers xxx
Yeah, its happened a couple of times over the last few years so thats not bad going. We often meet boating couples at locks that are in the middle of arguments too 😬
Well done guys. If you get to the saville town basin (dewsbury arm) again, there's a fantastic cafe of homemade pies and a brilliant CAMRA pub in the loft. Absolute must if you pass by again.
So the CRT is actually doing themselves a dis-service by not lengthening the locks for larger boat travel through this canal. Sorry you had such a tough time, Jo.
Think you are being hard on yourselves....you travel an incredible amount and both of you looked tired out...moor up and take a good few days break.....love your vlogs....
Really. You think moving the boat every two weeks is relaxing? We’ve moved the boat only once every two weeks since November and not found this to be the case.
Minimal List We move about once a week and find it very relaxing, those locks did look a bit of a shocker though. Sat still for a few days waiting for the wind to abate and I'm going stir crazy. Three weeks 'til we are out for blacking; ask me if Instill find it relaxing then.
We had exactly the same issues on this navigation we found it to be very stressful and quite dangerous in parts . The issues at ledguard flood gates are due to the moorers there deciding to close the gates despite the crt having previously opened them. We got stuck under a cross beam on the off side lock due to them closing the gates . Lovely folk!!!
None at all they just look at the river level and if they don't like it they shut the gates . The guy setting the lock new the gates were closed but was still prepared to cruise it cos he also knew they should have been open
We sympathized with you about the Huddersfield Wide locks, they are seriously scary. As we were leaving Huddersfield we met a boat being towed back to the marina having had its motor flooded by the leaky gates at the sixth lock. It was a very tough couple of days. You did get lucky twice, you have done that section now, it's going to be out of action for a long time, and you didn't go into Dewsbury that would be the most depressing place we have ever been to.
A large section of this navigation is now closed for the foreseeable future due to being washed away as the river calder topped it's banks between mirfield and horbury taking a lock wall with it
Thank you for another great vlog. So many memories came flooding back - those scary little platforms you have to stand on to wind up the paddles, the awful and awkward Calder and Hebble spike and the difficulty of getting out of those short locks. That you didn't have a major meltdown is a testament to your fortitude.
You look and sound knackered, but you are both safe, which is most important, and we have met awkward very stiff hard to work locks which just adds to the agony.
Nice to see my local canal at Mirfield featured in your vlog. Yes it can be challenging in parts. A shame you didn't pause at Shepley Bridge marina. They have a coffee shop and a miniature railway. The figure of three lock area has been inundated with river flood water that caused immense damage to the cut.
The stresses of trying to meet a time crunch really came out in this one, hopefully by now you're past the stoppages and things are a bit more relaxed although the weather can't be helping. Stay safe guys looking forward to seeing your continuing adventures soon.
well you two do work hard, but just to let you know I am glad you got down to where you moored up a while ago ,since the bad weather there is a lock blown out I am not sure if it is on the lower part of that cut or up above the junction with the Huddersfield broad but it will be months before the canal is open again, any way we have a picture of our old boat moored in the same place you finished up at ,its a hard rout but worth it for the beauty.
It’s the Figure of Three locks we passed through near the bed of this video... yeah a lot of damage, going to be out of commission for most the year, apparently. M
Amazed at how you continue to keep your cool (in vid) during what must have been an arduous day. It may be the editing but I don't sense you getting irritated, perhaps best to store it in the section named 'been there, seen it, forgotten about it'. I still managed to take a quick look at quite acceptable landscape and some very nice bridges. Hope you've managed to get some rest after this.
We have pretty much been resting since November so are well recovery and ready for adventure. I think we got our irritation out of the way early on and then just resigned ourself to getting on with it. Especially after our errors, it becomes unsafe if you are in the wrong frame of mind as that is when more mistakes happen.
Respect you two that route is a bloody nightmare, especially the locks that are in dire need of repair. CRT told me the reason is the Narrow and Broad are seldom used, oh i wonder why. Keep on keeping on.
Thanks guys! Hard day indeed but thanks for sharing. My mother grew up in the town of Dewsbury which has given it's name to "that bloody arm!" of Michael's side-trip exploration.
I am so glad you guys could laugh at the fnd of that very very hard day and those spike thing OMG how hard are they. Well Done. I think that Been the hardiest day of your whole time. ?
Oof! Looked like Perseverance took one on the chin. I can imagine George thinking that there better be no damage to his happy home! LOL. Thanks for sharing another very well done video. Spring is coming here! The redwing blackbirds have returned about 3 weeks early.
Glad to see we're not the only ones that have "one of those days" every once in a while. They are the ones the make for the good stories once you're safely installed in the pub.
Loved this vlog! This whole series down the Huddersfield narrow, and broad and onwards so far have been my favourite! Made me want to try it, we love a challenge! A stressful day, but handled well! Sorry for being so far behind, following all you boat tubers is a full time job in itself!
Mistakes? I saw none. You had a momentary falling out because you were work stressed, so? You’re human after all. Love your vlogs. ZZ top and his pretty missus.
Just getting back to watching you guys after a long hiatus from watching RUclips thanks to a new job. Looks like you guys really caught it on this leg of your trip. I hope you were able to get a good amount of rest soon after. It looked like exhausting work. Still, I'd love to spend a few months traveling the canals in the UK. One day. Oh, and Jo, gesundheit!
I appreciate and understand the frustration when you have a day like that. Our first proper trip was stressful - running late getting to Oxford and it took a while to get underway. Didn't realise one of the paddles on the lock just up from Dukes Cut was still up so as we were trying to fill the lock it was emptying. Got shouted at by a passing boater on the towpath then started running out of light and couldn't find anywhere to moor. Happens to all of us I think. Hope you've had a rest since this was filmed! :)
Gal, Guy, and Pup, if you can still talk to each other at the end of such a challenging day, you did good. But you didn't have to go to such extremes to reiterate the fact that the canal boating life style is NOT as stress free as was brought into question in an earlier video comment I made. The best we can hope for is overcoming and learning. You did both. Take care and God Bless, Paul from Florida.
Super video, thanks! My boat is 58.5 feet and having seen your problems with those short locks, it just looks too dangerous for a single hander with a slightly longer boat!
We have heard of 58 foot boats making it down. But yeah, it would be a risk, especially on your own and especially as the CRT say that 57'6' is the max length that should attempt it.
17:00 At last you get on the boat, Jo. I was getting stressed just watching this. I could hear my wife’s “get you’re a!$@ up here now!” comments in my head. Sometimes the need for brawn outweighs the desire for equality.
Well done guys that was a hard day but you got through it. We've all made mistakes at locks thankfully not major ones. Hope you are having s bit more of a rest now you deserve it. Thanks for the vlog take care you three. Alan.
It was a hard day. Unfortunately this route is out of action for the next year due to storm damage so we are glad we made it when we did waterwaynews.blogspot.com/ It not so bad, just make sure you have lots of time and lots of crew.
@@MinimalList Well, my wishes were for "real time" - I'm hoping you've had some good rest since that was filmed :) If that bad day was yesterday, and you stayed up editing all night to post it today, my wishes won't help, heaven help you! ;)
I'm thinking that I would gladly pay a small toll for someone to operate those gates. Many times I watch you too and think yep, there goes hubby's back, or that is going to kill my sciatica.
Wow, hard day guys. Mistakes are made by us all, we just don't film and publisize them. Silliest mistake I made was, I got to a lock, emptied it and shut all the paddles, which wasn't a problem except I was above the lock. As for the short locks, I feel your pain. We're 62' and the L&L are 60' locks so had to do them all in the naughty corner and then open the opposite gate. It's hard work, although having a bow thruster must make it easier to get the front over. Thanks for a great vlog and keeping it honest.
On this evdience I'm glad I'm getting a fifty foot narrowboat. Less storage than yours but I wouldn't want to be put in this situation as a solo boater... my nerves would be shot away. Also, looks like you could use one of them fancy ratchet windlesses. :)
Yeah, those ratchet windlasses have always looked more trouble than they are worth but on these locks I can really see the advantage. I'm just glad our boat isn't any longer but we knew we wanted to go everywhere when we bought it.
You guys are really doing well, despite the difficulties. And with now knowing that you are about to face one of the wettest winters on record, I cannot imagine some of the drama which you have had put before you. Has the flooding affected much of your plans?
To be honest it was always our plan to slow right down in winter. Last year we were moving ever two to three days but this winter it has been every two to three weeks and we are raring to get going again. We have been lucky with our moorings and avoided most of the bad weather.
Well done on getting through a tough day, sure was problem after problem after problem....good team work carried the day. You guys get through some milage and walking George is essential for his health too, bet that sleep was one of the best you had. As others have said quite interesting to see the issue you encounter which makes it all the more interesting for us who just sit and watch. That break where you can just rest up for a week or more must be so needed.
I think the locks are actually longer than 57 feet but the CRT advise that only boats shorter than 57'6" can safely use them. Sorry if our wording in the vlog was confusing.
Interesting video. Seems the CRT needs to extend all locks to about 80 feet (for when I get my 70 footer), add proper landings to each lock. If they are doing that, they should replace CRT keys with remote controls for opening gates and operating the sluices, obviously adding pumps to recycle the water should the water level be to low . :-)
I love it. I absolutely love it! You had me laughing all the way through. I know I shouldn't laugh but the pair of you had me in tears. Sorry :-) Keep 'em coming please.
I enjoyed this vlog on many levels, I understand the issues you had but you handled them well done. By the way George did not seem to be too bothered!!!!! In the earlier parts with the sun shinning you were seeing West Yorkshire at her best!!!!! I grew up close to the “Percy” pub and played in that canal as a kid. Went to school in Thornhill and again got into trouble in that stretch of the canal. Happy to see it through your eyes and comments . Thank you from South Carolina.
Forgive my ignorance, but at one set of locks you said it was ok to release the paddles "the fast way" , maybe that's what you said??? To the hope to barge someday person, what does that mean? Again, thanks for taking the time to educate me!
Yee gods, you both look so tired. Those mechanisms look like a real pain. Literally and figuratively. I wonder if they aren't packed with grease frequently enough?
Thanks .. I'm so tempted but at 58' I'd have to take it real steady ..it looks tight even on the diagonal and getting hung up or trapped under would be no joke.. I'll probably do a reccy closer to the time... Thanks again and happy chugging.
I understand your need to get through where there may be stoppages coming up but what is your overall objective/timetable? Can you not take more time and see the 'North of England' more leisurely? It's well worth it!
We don't have an over all plan other thank to go everywhere on the network before our savings run out. We really didn't have any choices but to travel in travel from the Bridgewater canal to the Aire and Calder in 9 days. We were delayed leaving Manchester due to an unscheduled closure on the Rochdale 9 and there were scheduled stoppages along the Huddersfield Canals and Aire and Calder that we had to get past to avoid getting stuck for weeks on end. Plus the Calder was in and out of flood so we didn't want to risk getting stuck there. There were a lot of factors to consider. Having said that it was always our plan to slow right down for winter which we have done and have been enjoying taking our time on the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigations.
I just wanted to throw my arms around you both, get you a cup of tea, some Lidl pastries, and send Shaun to do the locks for you 😂 So proud of you both for including the stressful times too. It was sad to see the Figure of Three Locks given the recent devastation there. Sending loads of love! 💜💜💜

Thanks for coming along. Thats kind of you to say.
Excellent Vlog. Huddersfield is my home town. Hope all well with you . You must be so far ahead (4 months)
Enjoy
We wish we had had more time there. Not so far ahead. We slowed right down after we got past Castleford.
Glad to see we're not the only ones that have "one of those days" every once in a while. They are the ones the make for the good stories once you're safely installed in the pub.
Definitely not the only ones!
Some days are good, some days not so. There's always tomorrow :) keep going guys you do wonderful videos - very jealous of your travels :)
True, and thankfully days this hard are very rare.
Loved this vlog! This whole series down the Huddersfield narrow, and broad and onwards so far have been my favourite! Made me want to try it, we love a challenge! A stressful day, but handled well!
Sorry for being so far behind, following all you boat tubers is a full time job in itself!
Thank you. So glad you enjoyed these videos. I am really behind with editing too! Good luck with the catch up
@@MinimalList not as behind as me, watching!!
Can’t wait to catch up!
While the locks were a struggle the river sections were gorgeous! Thanks for the videos.
Yeah, the surroundings were gorgeous. Thanks for watching.
Here is hoping your coming months are a lot more enjoyable! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! We did end up slowing down a wee bit for the winter! M
@@MinimalList Glad to hear that. It is always hard to handle those "oh, let's just keep going" urges. Some days are just not meant for pushing on.
Mistakes?
Welcome back! No time like the present for that time on a boat! M
It's not an ideal way to cruise but it happens to most people at some stage i'm sure. We are we'll rested after really slowing down this winter.
It's a common myth. Im sure the Canal boating life is less stressful if you live in a marina if thats any help
gees feel bloody knackered just watching you both lol x
We slept well that night
Super video, thanks! My boat is 58.5 feet and having seen your problems with those short locks, it just looks too dangerous for a single hander with a slightly longer boat!
We have heard of 58 foot boats making it down. But yeah, it would be a risk, especially on your own and especially as the CRT say that 57'6' is the max length that should attempt it.
17:00 At last you get on the boat, Jo. I was getting stressed just watching this. I could hear my wife’s “get you’re a!$@ up here now!” comments in my head. Sometimes the need for brawn outweighs the desire for equality.
Even the brawn can’t turn the bloody things when there’s no grease! M
"Instead we push on" - thats perserverence 👍😊
Or foolhardiness! Often the same thing with us! ;-) M
Oh dear sounds a most unfortunate trip. Hope everything is calm now.
It’ll get calmer in a couple videos! M
Well done guys that was a hard day but you got through it. We've all made mistakes at locks thankfully not major ones. Hope you are having s bit more of a rest now you deserve it. Thanks for the vlog take care you three. Alan.
Thanks! We take a bit of a rest in a couple videos, once we get past that closure! M
OMG! What a hard day for you both! That's one canal I'll be avoiding😜
It was a hard day. Unfortunately this route is out of action for the next year due to storm damage so we are glad we made it when we did waterwaynews.blogspot.com/
It not so bad, just make sure you have lots of time and lots of crew.
You sure do make it look like work, this cruising. 😱😘
I loved this. Well done
Thanks Lorna x
You two just work really well together fantastic vlogs
Thank you
Thumbs Up you Two....
Thank you!
Know how you feel my first time boating last year 13 hours 26 locks and 9 hours day before but loved it
Exhausting!
That was just going to be one of those days
Without the bad you wouldn’t notice the good
A interesting watch....well explained.....lots of hard work achieved on this vlog.....well done........thanks for sharing
Thank you and thanks for watching.
What a day! The area does not appeal
It was a one off. Luckily most cruising days are not that tough.
Dudes, another great vid, find your story inspirational.
Thank you. So nice of you to say.
Like that diagonal solution
It was the only option... although it did make getting out passed the gate a little hard
What a hard day! I hope you've had a chance to rest up, and perhaps treat each other to a good meal out.
Rest is still a few videos off! M
@@MinimalList Well, my wishes were for "real time" - I'm hoping you've had some good rest since that was filmed :) If that bad day was yesterday, and you stayed up editing all night to post it today, my wishes won't help, heaven help you! ;)
I used to live in Savile town and played on the canal banks a lot. 1960-1962
Oh wow, how lovely.
I'm thinking that I would gladly pay a small toll for someone to operate those gates. Many times I watch you too and think yep, there goes hubby's back, or that is going to kill my sciatica.
We hear of kids making pocket money helping out on locks but we've never seen any.
Oh dear. Sometimes you just go into automatic don't you. We are looking forward to the L&L, they should be positively roomy for us after the HBC.
WHEW! You 2 are intrepid for sure 👍🏻
Sometimes we are.
Thanks Ian, It was a tough day, but days like that are really rare. Yes we are well rested after a winter of rarely moving. 😊
57ft lock .. but the gate SWINGS INWARD catching 57ft boats
good googleymoogely
I think the locks are actually longer than 57 feet but the CRT advise that only boats shorter than 57'6" can safely use them. Sorry if our wording in the vlog was confusing.
Dang Jo .What a day . You should have headed to the closest 5 star hotel had a massage and a good rest .
Not sure how many 5 stars there are up here. M
All sounds nice... though I’m not sure the conservatIonists would allow it! M
Well done, it was a long and trying day. Soon you will get some rest. :-)
Thank you. Luckily days that hard are rare.
hi u2 made a strong job on the river i hope u have time for te before bedtime cheers :)
We sure did. Thank you
That was tough and left me feeling quite breathless!! Take care you two, canal life is said to be relaxing??
It was a long day, but days like that are rare. I don't know many continuous cruisers that say live is relaxing. Thanks for watching.
I love it. I absolutely love it! You had me laughing all the way through. I know I shouldn't laugh but the pair of you had me in tears. Sorry :-) Keep 'em coming please.
Well, glad you could laugh at us as well as with us! M
sorry for the early start but the trades insist on a dry roof over their heads before they leave site and have an hours breakfast
👍
I know this from earlier at the end of October but you guys look so exhausted. Hoping that you are having a quiet winter.
We slow down few videos from now, if only because Mother Nature decided to sock us in! M
It took a force of nature to slow you two down!!
It's a lovely area and a shame we had to cruise through it so fast. I hope we brought back some good memories. Thanks for watching,
Forgive my ignorance, but at one set of locks you said it was ok to release the paddles "the fast way" , maybe that's what you said??? To the hope to barge someday person, what does that mean? Again, thanks for taking the time to educate me!
Hmm, I don’t think that is what we said. I can’t remember. Sorry
I'm guessing that the "Whoops" at 6:59 is not a direct quote!
That was a good one loved the music.
Thank you
Yee gods, you both look so tired. Those mechanisms look like a real pain. Literally and figuratively. I wonder if they aren't packed with grease frequently enough?
Grease is certainly part of the problem... they’re also just too bloody heavy! M
Quality content as per...from your experience would you say the Huddersfield broad could be navigated by a 58'..
From our experience in a 57' boat I wouldn't recommend it but we do know of boats longer than us that have done it.
Thanks .. I'm so tempted but at 58' I'd have to take it real steady ..it looks tight even on the diagonal and getting hung up or trapped under would be no joke.. I'll probably do a reccy closer to the time... Thanks again and happy chugging.
You passed within yards of the birthplace of Captain Picard himself (Sir Patrick Stewart), in Mirfield. Engage. 😂
Fun fact! Thanks
Bless you!
👍
Ty ♡
What is going on with that chain on the lock gate? What a ridiculous hazard.
No idea.
